Physics or Biology? 1 2
by gba- 27 replies

So I'm doing course selections and I'm not sure whether I should take SL Bio or Physics. I'm already taking HL Chem and I can only choose one other science. I've asked a lot of people but everyone just says "it depends on what you're going to do". The thing is, I have no clue. I'm considering med school, which would require bio, but it's equally likely I'll go into physical sciences. Here's my reasoning (pros for each): Bio -easier, I could focus on my other HL subjects, and my marks would look better applying to university -more people are taking bio, so there are more people I can discuss/work with; not many of my friends are taking physics Physics -harder, but I think…

Hello all! I'm around the time at my school where I should start writing my extended essay very soon. I was thinking of doing it about something with electricity, but when my physics teacher found out how much electronic stuff I do on my own time, he really believes that I should do something related to electronics. I'm not looking for specific topic suggestions in electronics. What I'm really asking is for a general idea of some of the types of things you could investigate with electronics, because I don't see any good types of things to do with electronics really. What do you guys think? Actually one thing that just popped into my head just as I was writing this was loo…

I do not want to major in anthything related to science in the future. However, I am obliged to take one science. I want to know, Which one is easier, Physics SL or Chemistry SL? In order to recieve a 7 for SL Chemistry, You need 80+(aprox) For Physics, a 7 is 68+(Aprox) Logically, Physics seems easier. What are your opinions? Thank you!

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew the word limit (if there is one) for chemistry SL IAs. Mine both reached the 4000 word mark, and I'm wondering if I should be worried (both longer than my EE! lol). A classmate of mine even hit 6000 words on one of his.

I am currently an upcoming senior. I take physics and chemistry both at higher level. I am planning to finish all my IAs in the summer. I wonder how many lab reports do we have to do for any group 4 subjects . i.e. How many D, DCP and CE do we have to do respectively to fulfill IB requirments?

Hi guys, i would like to ask about error bars...which never fail to make my brain go error. Well, i'm doing my physics IA on bouncing and i got these data points: i intend to make a mass vs. change in momentum graph, i have calculated both absolute and relative uncertainty using error propagation rules. You may want to ignore the velocity in the image, it was just there to calculate things, but not included in the graph i'd like to make. But now.......how should i do the error bars? If i plot the data points, they will be linear. If i just took the absolute errors, the error bars are barely visible. if i took the relative errors, one error bar would be so huge while …

Help, because I'm a full IB student, I can max take 2 sciences in IB. I really do want my options open considering I'm fairly good at science and have no idea what I want to do in the future.Basically I'll be taking one with Chem HL and probably Math HL and other courses in IB,( don't know if this info helps) and another one either in grade 10 or grade 11 summer school for the 20s. And by grade 12, I have a free block open up for the 30 level course. Anywayz I've learnded a portion of physics 20 in chem, don't know if it counts and a portion of bio in grade 10, so far the only difference I find is that the physics labs' marks r slight lower, but my overall marks r both ar…

So apparently this is a new subject, I think? salivattack just sent me a syllabus for this subject - Sports, Exercise and Health Science - and it's apparently for first exams in May 09. That means I guess the first batch that will study it will be the ones just starting IB this year. I had a quick look at the syllabus...it looks pretty interesting. It's like a mixture of anatomy physiology with a bit of psychology thrown in. It's good for someone who wants to go into professional sports I guess. I know a friend of mine who's a professional squash player would love the chance to take this subject.

I want to take HL Biology and Chemistry, but as I'm not very good at math, I have to take math studies. I've heard that taking both of these at HL would be really difficult because I'm not great at math. I'd like to go to medical school, so I will need a science based undergrad. I am also planning on taking a Pre-cal course after graduation in order to be accepted into university. Has anyone done both sciences at HL with math studies? Wouldit be better to just do SL Chem and HL Bio, or even just one science course( I don't really like that option)? I am also concidering med school in England, so if that makes any difference... Thanks

I am soon to graduate, but I have deferred my Uni places, so for poops and laughs, I might do a Rugby line next year in Highschool(we do that thing here in Sweden). Of course I would have to do some classes, so I was thinking of picking up another language and doing self-taught Exercise and Health Sciences SL. But I cannot find any textbooks designed for the IB! Help.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could share their thoughts on doing two HL sciences in IB. I plan on taking Bio HL and Chem HL and I know I can work hard enough to get the grades but I don't really know what to expect by doing both. Some people have told me its really hard and its got me somewhat worrying if I can do it or not. I'd really appreciate if you could share your insight into what to expect or any experiences. I'm currently choosing courses for IB because I'm in the last year of MYP and still a little bit confused as to what I want to do. Thanks

Hi everyone Probably irrelevant, but I'm a bit confused. I'm doing HL Biology and HL Chemistry, and today when I was reviewing Topic 2 and Topic 12 (SL and HL of Atomic Theory, respectively), in my text book I came across "Higher Level" and "Extension". I'm in my last year of IB, and last year my chem teacher taught the HL Atomic Theory stuff to us cause it's pretty easy, but we only learnt "12.1.3-12.1.5" and I was searching for 12.1.1 and 12.1.2 and they're under "Extension". What is this? There's "Extension" for all the topics! Even the HL topics that we've covered and finished in class...there's "Extension" stuff that I haven't learnt! Is this not "AHL"? Why is i…

Lab Report Can anyone please please give me any idea on how processing a lab on "EFFICIENCY" ?

You are to take a simple machine like a pulley or incline or some sort of moving toy and determine the efficiency of the machine as you vary some factor. This is a formal IB and will be marked according to the IB criteria. You must work alone on this lab to collect your data. Please do not forget the importance of collecting multiple sets of data, plotting some type of linear graph, and including error sources in your conclusion. can anyone please tell me how should i do my lab since I have no idea on how should i process my lab and what to do.... feel so ashamed thank you so much!

Hi guys, I was just wondering when to know when the data you have collected experimentally is normally distributed. Is there a method that exists, to show whether it is in Gaussian Distribution? EDIT: I have 4 groups , each with 5 trials -- if that helps at all In my IA i want to use the t-test, however the condition is that the data has to be normally distributed, soo I don't know where to go Thanks!

I've visited the 'how to make a perfect lab report' thread and the structure that was given for a lab report included having a research question in the very beginning. My question is could you give me an example of a Chemistry or Science research question. I don't know about how the question itself is structured to be honest and a general idea would be good, so that I can adapt it to my own lab report. Thanks for entertaining my stupidity. AK.

As we all know, there are 3 types of error in the sciences: 1. Systematic error 2. Random error 3. Human error Where the third one is not an appropriate type of error to be discussed in the Conclusion&Evaluation part in lab reports. My question is what are the examples of human errors? I only know a few but I am not sure on that anymore because I forget For example, last week I did a Chemistry experiment. I understood the procedure wrongly and I repeated the experiment after my teacher explained to me what I was actually asked to do. This wasted my time and I ended up not finishing the experiment. So we will continue the experiment tomorrow (4 out of the 5 of us made…

Hello! So I am currently taking Chemistry and Physics SL, and we are almost finishing the core topics ; But I am having troubles with some information. My school has only one option of IB Programme, so my teachers told me that we would be studying "the options" for paper 3 this month. My chemistry teacher told me that in paper 3, you are given a 36 page exam which has all of the questions of all the options; but you could choose two of them which would correspond to those you studied in school (I know one of them is human biochemistry). But my physics teacher told me that paper 3 is a personalized exam, in which if you chose (of course I didn't chose them, my school did…

Hey, Does anyone know whats an antenna complex? I mean - is it just an abstract term describing the particular arrangement of the pigments inside a photosystem or is it that photosystems are special kinds of antenna complexes or maybe it is the name for each pigment connected by a pigment-binding protein. I cant get that although, and I've been searching for some time now

I'm a bit lost when it comes to approaching my science subjects. Both of my teachers in Chemistry and Biology are ones that expect you to learn independently. This is especially hard in Chemistry since I'm almost completely new to it. Up to this point I've only barely been passing and I need to do something about it. Just need alot of recommendations in terms of a systematic process that'll help me learn the material properly that I can use for the next three terms of Ib. How to take/structure notes, how to practice etc. Be specific and Thanks!

I'm in bio HL and I'm wondering about labs. I am getting the impression that not all of them get sent in to IB - does this mean that if I do really poorly on a few of them, it won't negatively affect my mark (unless my teacher, for some reason, sends it in)? If not all labs get used for my IB mark then how many does my teacher need to send in? Is it different for SL? I'm not very clear about this and I'm kind of worried that the bad labs I did at the beginning of last year are going to drag my mark down. Also I'm a little puzzled because I hadn't heard of the group 4 project until this year. Is it a major component of IB? Does it affect your internal assessment ma…

I'm looking for supplementary material for HL Biology and HL Chemistry. But, where I live, hardly any libraries stock IB textbooks, and if you want to purchase them, they need to be specially ordered :/ So, I'd love to hear your opinions on these books. Any sort of reviews/comments/whether it's worth getting them or not (as they're quite expensive)... I'd prefer a textbook with more than the minimum content on the syllabus rather than concise material, because I came in late to both courses, and missed about 4 topics... :/ Currently I have the Oxford textbooks (both the course companion and study guides) for both subjects. Hi, I am wondering which is the best SL science to pick as I am quite good at science, but aren't interested in taking it to uni. My favourite part of the subject is ethics, but I don't know which IB subject concentrates on this the most. In terms of my modules so far, I got C on core biology (getting a re-sit as my teacher made me do foundation and I got full marks), and A in core chemistry and core physics. I would not say I'm particularily strong or weak in any of the three. I can't do DT as it's not offered at my college, or Environmental Systems as the college uses that to fill the group 4 requirement for people who failed to get a B in science GCSE.

I'm having a difficult time deciding between Biology HL and Chemistry HL. I have the opportunity to take both, both at HL or one at HL and the other at SL. I'm fairly well at Chemistry; it seems simple. However, Biology would probably be better suited for what I plan to study at uni (Psychology with possible intent for grad school). From what I heard, Chemistry is mostly mathematics while Biology is memorization. Is there anyone who could give a full comparison of the two subjects, preferably someone who took both or are in the process in taking both? Thanks.
