Hello, I was tutoring a mate of mine and I came across this problem: Area The included angle of the two sides of constant equal length s of an isosceles triangle is theta. a) Show that the area of the triangle is given by A = 1/2s^2 sin(theta). b) If theta is increasing at the rate of 1/2 radian per minute, find the rates of change of the area when theta = pi/6 and theta = pi/3. c) Explain why the rate of change of the area of the triangle is not constant even though dtheta/ dt is constant. I can find a but I can't figure out how to do b and c. Any suggestions as to solve it?

Hey everyone, I am currently in first year IB taking HL Math. However, I am struggling a bit with complex numbers in polar form, so I was wondering if you guys could provide some helpful tips/tricks with these types of questions? I always blank out when I attempt to solve these questions. For example, what steps should I take when solving this question: If z is a complex number and |z+16| = 4|z+1|, find the value of |z| Thanks!

Hi, quick question. How have you guys set up your Microsoft Equation Editor in your word processor? - and are there any specific requirements? All academic maths articles seem to have equations with similar font and size. Even wikipedia. My equation editor is atm. very ugly - unfortunately. Any help will be appreciated Thx, and good luck with the IB!

So, for the Math IA portfolio's, you need to form a general statement - and the problem I have is as thus: If you're just looking at the assignment and can immediately see a pattern forming, and it seems to be correct - how do you explain that? i.e. do you say "from observations, we can see that ...." or should you just completely avoid that and try and find a proper way to prove it? Thanks in advance

Ok so I want to make a topic containing challenging math questions (kind of math riddles) that stimulate thinking. So the rule is: Once someone put a question no other person can ask another question unless the first question is answered with explanation. And please don't post IB questions. Please don't get the answers from the internet. Try to do it yourself. If you can't, leave the answer room for other students. I hope I was clear. So I will begin: or if you can't see the figure, here is a link: http://i.imgur.com/VlbOC.png In the figure above, B is the midpoint of AC and the center of the green circle. All other labeled points are also the centers of circle…

Hi, Sorry to add another SL/HL topic to the forums, but I'm quite confused! I'm not incredibly good at math, I'm relatively average - yet I plan on studying computer science at University, and I have been a programmer in languages that require a mathematical/pragmatic mindset since I was 10 years old, I'm now 15, yay. My worry, is that I plan to apply to a university, that kinda really prefers Math HL (MIT), and Math is literally the only subject in which I don't have an A in, at the moment. Though I now have a tutor (started last week) and am redoing my entire textbook, so hopefully that will change with practice. Assuming I take Math SL, and get a high grade, versus…

For part of my portfolio I worked out some of the possible values using wolframalpha (http://www.wolframalpha.com). Regarding software like this which literally does all of the calculation for you, does anybody know whether it would be against the rules in any way if I use it for my SL maths portfolio, and would marks be docked of for using it rather than doing the calculations manually - providing that I say I use it of course...??

My teacher haven't taught the class how to use the ratio test. I want to apply the ratio test for my math portfolio and unfortunately it's due on Monday, therefore I cannot ask my teacher how to use the ratio test. I would like to know if L = 0. So far I got up to here: I have no clue what I should do from here. Thank you in advance.

I'm currently unable to access Word and that converts all fractions like this (1/2) into the stacked format, right? Will I get technology points knocked off if I leave them in the wide version? Sorry if this isn't the right place!

Feel free to post your useful calculator functions that are not so obvious to the average user. I know that only recently have I started using my calculator properly and it helps a lot! For those of you who don't know - you can update your calculator to the newest firmware and it contains many new features! Possibly one of my favourite additions is that you don't have to remember the order to input the binompdf(), normalpdf() etc. as it gives you a wizard now!

Hi I am about to choose my subjects for IB Diploma. I am quite good at maths, but am not sure if I'm good enough for HL maths. Is it possible for me to change from SL maths to HL maths in the middle of the course? (that is if I get good scores and do well in SL) Thanks,

Math is probably my worst subject. I vowed to improve this year, but I just had my first test today and I know I did horribly. It wasn't because I really didn't understand the concepts, but I made a stupid mistake on one question which was worth three marks, except a similar part of that question appeared in about 4-5 other questions also worth three marks each, so it messed up my calculations from the start and now I know I got a bajillion marks off. But in general, it takes me a lot longer to digest the material, and find solutions to problems than my other friends. A lot of my friends are math geniuses, so I feel especially stupid when it comes to math. Are there any t…

What was the process of placing you in one of the math levels. At my school the teacher averaged test scores over a semester and if you had a 98% or above, you were placed in Math HL. Just curious how they do it at other schools. My school has pre-IB to prepare you for the real IB, if that changes anything.

I have had some people tell me it's basically an AS-Level in maths, while Maths HL is A2. I have had some people tell me it's halfway between AS-Level in maths, while Maths HL is A2 + AS Further Maths. I have had some people tell me it's approximately more or less an A2 in Maths, while Maths HL is A2 + Further Maths. So which of these approximations are closest to correct, guys? Or are none of them close enough? I need to know, because LSE is being ambiguous with its IB requirements, and basically require an A2 in Maths for this one degree, and I don't know if Maths SL will suffice. Also, a side question: Is Maths Studies basically GCSE level then?

Hello guys. I am currently in the ib dp programme (year 1) and so far I have chosen Chem, Bio and Math as my HLs and Eng Lit, Chinese B and Geo as my SLs. However, I am thinking of switching HL math to SL because it kinda seems too difficult for me. I do enjoy math but I don't absolutely LOVE it but I'm afraid that SL may seem less of a challenge for me. Last year, I took the advanced math option (where you complete gr 10 and 11 math in one year) and I got 90% (Gr. 10) and 87% (Gr.11). In university, I would like to study: sciences (possible med), psychology, humanities. So what do you guys think? Please give me some of your advice and opinions. Oh btw, I'll be taking HL…

I'm going to choose Math studies and our school is offering us the Pearson books, but I'm not sure if I should buy the one for Math studies or for the Standard Level. I know it may sound kind of logical lol but I remember that our teacher for the past semester suggested us to get the one for the Standard level even if we go to Math studies because it supposedly has about the same topics but with more information, or something like that. Does anyone has experience with these books? I need advice on which one would be the best to get (by the way, I'm very bad at math). Please excuse any mistake in my english, I'm not a native speaker. Thanks!

Out of curiosity, for those who have finished both their type I and type II assignments (or are currently doing their type II), which one did you find to be more difficult? I realize there are many different combinations of type I/type II out there, so I'm hoping we'll see some sort of general consensus in the poll. This is mainly geared towards HL students, but SL students feel free to comment as well Personally, I found type II much easier than type I. They were about equally time-consuming, but I found the type I to be much more thinking-intensive. Of course, that's just me - what about the rest of you?

Hey guys, I have to give an exam called 'CET' in India before I can apply for undergraduate anywhere in the country, so the Mumbai University(like the head of all of them) issues subjects we must have(SLs and HLs) to qualify for a course, mine's BvSc (bachelor in Vet.Science) so I'm worried here coz they only have been mentioning SL and HL and I'm currently maths SSL, so: 1) How tough Is the the switch from SSL to SL? 2) If you know any Indian who's giving CET too can you ask him, I really need to know. Thanks a ton!

Has anyone tried the Cambridge and/or Pearson IB Math SL books? How are they? Do they give really good explanations? Math is probably my weakest subject, so I want to make sure I have a good textbook for next year. I know my school provides the Cambridge one, but since I'm pretty clueless at math should I buy the Pearson one too, just in case? I liked the Pearson chem HL book, and even though the Pearson bio HL has a lot of stuff you don't need to know, I find the explanations in those good too.

Hey guys I'm starting IB real soon and I was comtemplating on whether to buy the TI-nspire or the TI-84+ SE. What's the difference in these two calc besides memory ROM? Can you get those handy 'apps' avl for the TI-84+ on the TI-nspire? I will be using the ti84+ keypad on the nspire, but do you think it'll be hard to cope up with anyone using the ti-84/83? Is the TI-nspire permitted in Phy HL & Chem SL? I know it's permitted in Math. I'm pretty new here lol. My main concern was that the TI84+ SE doesn't support Calculus or AP Phy. This comparison chart says TI-Nspire does. I would like to know which calc you recommend. I have no plans of doing AP Calc/Phy, but I want…

Okay so I'll be switching schools 1 year into IB, and the 2nd school requires that I complete the 2-year IB course over again - but I'll have to do 4 HLs. I've thought about it, and I think thats pretty good, as it'll let me get higher grades in the end by having 1 extra year of IB. So my question is: If a student completes the first year of Math SL, how much of an advantage would that student have if they joined the 2-year HL course? Would it mean HL would be easier? Or would it mean I'd do less work because of the course overlap? Thanks!

Hi, So I am working right now with my mathematics portfolio, and I have some problems with the dessign specifications. Some other comments in this website state that the portfolio (and mostly all of the other IB projects) must be in 1.5 line spacing. If I didn't do it that way, will I get points less? x_x (I also wrote most of them with letter Calibri...) And the other question is: Should the math portfolio have a structure like the science reports? (meaning introduction, variables, objectives, etc) Thanks! :b

Portfolio Assignments: How lazy have the teachers got?
by Guest Fusschinski- 11 replies

Portfolio assignments are, in comparison to the exam, the easiest way to get great marks for your maths grade. At my school the assignments have not changed since like 1999, as we still use the example ones handed out by the IB for teachers. This could suggest that the teachers have become slightly lazy with them. I do HL maths and we did for our type I task the 'dreaded' "Koch Snowflake" (18/20 ) and for type II we had the mind numbing "Making a Logistics model" (19/20 ). Note though that my teacher in no way is an easy marker, and although the great IB in all their incomprehensible glory will probably find marks to take off somewhere, like they do (some guy in …

Do you wish you could use calculators like TI-89 or TI-nspire CAS in your Math SL or HL class? Or do you think TI-83/84 was just enough? Did you have your TI-89 or TI-nspire CAS just at home to use it to help with your assignments? Was your teacher OK with you having them in class? Or did you not need those calculators and were satisfied with what TI-83 or TI-84 offered you?
