Today I got to know that my school has dropped math HL because lack of teachers and they say that students don’t get above 4 in math HL while most just switch to SL, leaving 1-2 students for math HL (our IB batches are quite small, like 15 students in a batch). So my school is against math HL and our coordinator was telling us that engineering/compsci unis accept math SL (giving a scholarship on merit too) anyway so what’s the point of taking math HL. Is she right? Should I take math SL or should I talk to my head about making an exception for me and letting me take HL? I’ve performed well in GCSE math and additional math (yeah yeah IB is different but I mean that my math…

I really really hate math. I am terrible at it, but I just had to take math at school. Therefore, I have to do IA. What is the easy topic for IA in math? I want a good grade in it. The full score is 20, right? Please help. Any ideas?

I am in grade 11 right now and am taking math SL. I am really struggling. In the winter mock exams we had, I got a 2/7 for P1 and a 2/7 for P2. My recent in-class test was not that much better either (3 but 1 point from a 2). I am worried that I might not pass with SL math at all. Should I move down or is it too late? Do you guys think I will get better grades if I work more / get more tutoring?

Hello, I am an 8th grade student who has recently been accepted into the Pre-IBDP program. I will go to Colonel By Secondary School in Ottawa next year. So we don't have a lot of course choices next year. For math, however, I can choose either MPM1DE (which is the accelerated pre-ib math course that leads to either HL or SL Math in grade 11) or MPM1D (which is the regular academic course in math which leads to SL Applications & Interpretation Math in grade 11). I want to be able to take HL Math in grade 11, but I hear it is an advanced course that consists of two years while SL Applications & Interpretation Math take only one year. Can you give me an explanation o…

I'm going to be a senior in high school and I need help deciding what math class to take as a senior. During my junior year, I took IB Math SL 1 and got a B-. Next year, I can either go on to IB Math SL II or take IB Math Studies SL (my school teacher math studies as a one year course). I plan on majoring in business management. I feel like I could easily get a 6/7 in Math Studies while I would get a lower grade in SL Math. The two main colleges I'm looking at are Virginia Tech and The University of Virginia. If I'm planning on majoring in business, should I take IB Math SL or IB Math Studies?

I'm from class 2021 (which means that I'll start DP next school year) and I had just recently learned that there are going to be changes in the math curriculum going into effect starting next year. So I heard that maths will be divided into 2 different subjects, Analysis & Approaches and Applications & Interpretations. With these new changes and my subject selection coming soon, there are a few questions I would like to ask: 1. What are the differences between the two 2. How do they compare to the current Math curriculum (Studies, SL, HL) in terms of difficulty/workload 3. And finally, if I'm planning to study Economics in the UK which one should I …

Hey guys this is my first post. I really need help deciding whether to drop to SL or continue with HL math. I just started the diploma course this year with math HL. Last year, I was in standard math class (lowest out of advanced, extended, standard <- unique to our school). Usually, it's rare for a student from standard math class to take math HL for DP course but I decided to take it because I thought I would need it for my major/career. Currently we just finished the third chapter test and are about to take the cumulative test next Monday. I have no difficulty with the class, assignments and other tasks in this class but struggling to get good grades. To be ho…

Hey guys, I'm in a pretty stressful situation as I can't decide whether to change my current SL Math to HL Math, and we're already getting to the point where it is too late to change. My situation: Currently taking HL Bio, Chem, Eng A Lang/Lit, Danish B and SL Math, and History. I want to study medicine in the UK after I graduate in 2020, and my dream is to go to Cambridge, but as I've read on their website only 2% of acceptances go to those who only have 2 subjects out of HL Bio, Chem, Phys, and Math. As I can only have two sciences, my only option is to switch to HL math (which is already quite a bit ahead of SL) to push myself out of those ridiculously l…

So I'm currently a freshman (9th Grade) taking Algebra II/Trig, and was wondering which math class to take next year (10th Grade). The choice is between SL or HL math. I have gotten pretty different information from various sources. Plan #1: 10th Grade: SL Math 11th Grade: HL Math 1 12th Grade: HL Math 2 Plan #1: 10th Grade: HL Math 1 11th Grade: HL Math 2 12th Grade: AP Stats My guidance counselor recommended that I do plan #1 because I have consistently gotten good scores in Math, but others have told me that plan #2 was better because I would take three years of IB math, rather than two. So I'm rather …

Hello! Just putting it out there that I’m new to this site, so please forgive me if I haven’t done this correctly or anything. I’m planning on starting my IB maths IA exploration for my HL class these holidays, and I was wondering whether anyone has any ideas for good topics? I’m interested in algebra, calculus and geometry. I do have some ideas for topics, and I’m leaning towards: Fractals - I’m not sure if this is a good topic or not, as after hours of scrolling through threads on here many people have said that it is too complicated? I had originally planned to perhaps figure out some formulas regarding some of the simpler fractal designs like…

Hi Guys, Now that Year 1 has ended, its almost time for me to get serious about colleges and that stuff. This year, I maintained a steady 5 in HL Math throughout the year, but I was thinking about dropping to SL, where it is more likely that I will get a 7 or at least a 6. I want to do Computer Sciences and Engineering in college, preferably in the U.S. Would it be better for me to switch to SL since that might bump me up to a total of 35 points (without EE and ToK), or should I stay in HL since that might look better on my transcript and my predicted grades? Thanks, Maharaja Stylo

I'll be beginning the first year of the diploma program in September and I'm worried. Generally, I'm confident that if I put in 100% effort into my work I'll do fine in every subject that I've chosen, however I'm not so sure about math. This year (Gr. 10), I put in very minimal effort and I got a 68 in my general math class, which was around 22 points under the average. While I plan to put in an astronomical amount of effort into 11th and 12th grade, I'm still afraid that my best won't be enough. I really want to prepare myself during the summer. So far, I've bought the Pre-IB Math prep book by the OSC. For the most part, I just want to make sure that I know the mat…

I want to change from Studies to SL. I chose studies at first because I usually got bad scores in maths and I plan to take an art major but now I've come to love maths and the course I want to take is still "artsy" but it is in the realm of design technology which needs at least SL. I am going to be grade 12 after the holidays, is it still possible?

Hello all! I'd just like to discuss something that I think is important to me and in also everyone else who does Maths Studies. Why do people think Studies is bad? It's not. They say it's an easy course for the 'less-able' students, but this isn't the case. I'd just like to clarify that the Maths Studies course is simply only more statistic-based, without the calculus and etc side of mathematics. It's for people that don't necessarily need complex Maths such as Physics, Mathematics, Economics maybe, etc.. For other things, it's not needed, such as art-careers. Also, it is worth noting that taking Maths Studies is a good opportunity to get a high score and in turn you can …

I'm reviewing for my Calc III course and I came across a problem that's stumped me and I can't easily find any example of on the web. Given point A (0, 2, 2) and B (2, 2, 2), find the set of all points P such that vector AP is perpendicular to vector BP. My first reaction was thinking this was easy, and I just set up an equation with one unknown P, where I let the dot product = 0 (as the vectors should be perpendicular). This gives me a quadratic equation and thus two values for P. However, I'm afraid this is wrong as my options for the surface (I also have to write the surface's equation) are plane/line/sphere/cone/parabaloid/hyperboloid. Thanks.

Is the topic of Euclidean/non-euclidean geometry and the Riemann Sphere too hard of a topic for a Maths SL IA? I was thinking of exploring that in relation to map-making, specifically, finding out how much accuracy/info is lost when map-making (i.e. turning something 3D into 2D). I also want to know if the topic is viable and capable of getting good marks. I was thinking that I could gather satellite data and compare them with various maps (some claim to be 'perfect' or 'near perfect') where I can physically measure the distances.

This is my first post on the forums, so I'm not too familiar with how its supposed to work, and if anyone will see this at all, but I was wondering what math skills I should focus on/study if I were to go into IB next year (im in grade eight). I'm thinking about preparing a bit in advance, and our school does have a summer school for preparation but my friend is in grade nine right now, and really struggling even after having taken the summer course (and she's a pretty good student too). If anyone could give me any math tips and study material, or just studying tips in general for next year, that would be great.

hey, I have been taking maths standard level for the last 6 months and on tests have gotten 4's, 5's and 6's. However on our mock exam I barely achieved a 3. At University I want to study Law, and the only requirement I have seen is HL6 in English and a 4 in a science or maths SL. I fulfill those requirements therefore I was wondering if I should drop to studies? I have emailed he universities I want to attend (Edinburgh and Glasgow) and they said it would not be a problem or affect my admission. (For reference I take SL; Biology, Maths SL, Spanish B and HL; English A Literature, History and Norwegian A Literature)Moreover, I have been doing quite badly in Biology SL…

Hi guys, As I want to study economics at a selective university (in U.S) in the future, and I cannot stand taking Math HL at the moment, would it be sufficient to take Math SL combined with AP BC calc? I find Math SL very easy and score 6's/7's frequently (this is since I am repeating one year of the IB), so how hard would it be to shift focus during IB (repeated) year 1 and really study BC calc for almost a semester to take BC exams in spring? In this way I can compete with stronger applicants without having to struggle through the other than calc material in HL Math? Thnx

I made a mistake and conformed myself with Math Studies in 10th and 11th grade (my current year) but just now I am noticing that many universities require SL, or simply don’t accept Studies. Would it be wise to change to SL next year (Senior year) if possible or should I just stay in Studies? I get 100’s on Studies, but I feel like the gap between Studies and Standard is immense. I’m planning on doing mechanical engineer (which yes I feel like I can take) or computer science, two courses / majors which require a minimum of SL. Is there any other alternative (other than VHS) that could allow me to enter top universities with Studies? Extra: I’m doing well on ev…

Why not only rely on past papers? In my opinion, the best preparation with past papers is not to look over mark scheme. Essentially, as the name suggests, mark schemes only aim to aid teachers to mark student’s work on his paper. Not only does it lack with the detailed explanation, but also students lose their opportunity to encounter real IB style questions if they rely too much on mark scheme. For section A questions it relatively gives a good explanation; for Section B questions, however, when things get lengthy, explanations tend to be very concise and often do not make sense for students. It solely aims to guide teachers to base their grading criteria; it …

I'm in SL. Today we received our now graded quiz on distribution. Almost everyone got this one question wrong, our teacher said that we were "verifying it and not showing it". This specific terminology is new to me, I browsed some other educational forums in search of an example, but found only Public school teachers saying that there's no difference. What do you guys know about this? Is this an official IB thing or just being overly specific? Link to question

Hi! I'm currently a sophomore and in the process of making my schedule next year. Now, I'm not very good at math. I usually spend 2 hours studying math at home everyday, yet I still got a B past semester. I was recommended to take the BC Calculus course in 11th grade, which would lead to IB Math HL in 12th grade. However, another pathway I can do is AB Calc (IB Math SL) in 11th grade, which would lead to AP Stat/BC Calc in 12th grade. BC Calc has 9 units, while AB Calc covers 6 units. I want to say again that I'm not very good at math. Here are my questions: - Which pathway should I take? - I have yet to decide on my career, but dietitian, computer science, and may…

As a former Math SL student, I was struggling under a not-so-great teacher and (to a larger extent) general laziness. I found myself uninterested in the subject and decided that since I was going to be pursuing the Humanities for higher ed anyway, I wouldn't be needing Math; I ended up dropping down to Studies. Now that I'm into Philosophy, however, I've gained a newfound passion for the subject. I'm not "good" at math, per se, but I'm fairly logical and have been known to work some problems out more efficiently and faster than Math HL students in my grade, and am able to perform some of the same numerical operations they require a calculator for in my head. The differenc…

I'm not sure if this is an appropriate question to ask, so let me know if it isn't! I'm rubbish at maths, but it's just something I need to ace to pursue the career I want. I'm currently revising by doing past papers and initially I was using an old grading scale to figure out what I'll get, but of course (as many classmates have told me) the grades you get in the exams really depend on how everyone else scores. Hey guys, I have a friend who is conflicted on whether or not to take the IB Diploma program because of the math offered in our school. Only math SL is available but they say he can take courses online for math HL. He says he may want to become a computer engineer so he'll need a lot of math and in another school they offer Precalc, Calculus, and AP math (I don't really know how American systems work so as far as I know they're all separate classes but Precalc and Calculus can be in AP math). So should he transfer to another school because of this? I heard from another friend that Math SL is similar to AP math but I don't know how true that is... :|
