So for my internal assessment I am doing Newton's method as it is not in the syllabus and I thought it is hard. However, it is not. It involves only some basic calculus and I am worried that it will put my IA into jeopardy. How on earth can I make the maths in my IA harder? When the newton;s method is not hard? Or is Newton's method acceptable for maths HL IA? Thank you

Hello I am currently in the beginning of the second year of IB, and thinking of changing from Math SL to Math studies. Because.., -I got a passing grade of 3 on my end of IB year 1 exam:( -I really dislike math -Mathematics isn't required at university since I am planning to major in psychology or liberal arts. But, my school is not letting me change... Any advices? Anything would help! Also, I was wondering if you guys know of anyone was in a similar situation? That would really strengthen my case.

I'm stuck in a dilemma at my school, and I need help!!! So, I chose Math as one of my HL subjects when I applied for IB. I only got an A on my IGCSEs, but decided that I would take it at HL anyways. As soon as I got to my class, my teacher instantly tried to persuade me to drop her class and take math at SL. I wasn't discouraged, and continued through her class. One by one, other students dropped the subject due to the teacher's pressure and persuasion, and we ended up having 5 students. The other 4 students had a little bit of background with prep for HL math, whereas I had none. My teacher introduces the topic, and makes us do everything else on our own - saying tha…

x: The actual number of successes that occur in a specified region. λ represents the average number of successes that occur in the region Im wondering what each variable would represent in terms of average goals in a soccer match. I'm predicting the score of a match but I'm unsure what each variable would represent. λ would be the average goals in a season, but would x simplybe the number of total goals scored?

Hi to all, I would like to know what means "Online" for the Mathematics IB Standard Level book (ISBN:978-0-19-835507-6) course book. Does this mean that I will have access to the book from a website? Is this online version same to the eBook (CD version) of textbook (ISBN: 978-0-19-839011-4)? One more question about the CD version of textbook: can I copy the contents of CD to a usb flash drive or an internal drive or cloud in order to have access from my tablet or my netbook which is not equipped with CD-ROM? Thanks!

I am a bit obsessive compulsive, and when a wild problem comes where no exact solutions are obtainable and the only way to answer is using a graph, something just feels so wrong about it. Plus, how are you supposed to indicate answers, just by copying the graph and saying "hey, these are the answers"? For example, when the question doesn't specify a method to obtain the solutions, nor does it ask for them to be exact, is that a free pass to graph your way out of the question?

Hello, I am currently a senior at my high school and in my junior year I passed the IB Pre-Calculus with a B and I thought that I would move on to AP Calculus since that is what other IB students who took IB Pre-Calculus junior year went to. However this year I was put into IB Math Studies and was confused. I actually wanted to do Calculus in high school so that I can understand it before moving on to college, also I thought that AP Calculus looked stronger on my resume than IB Math Studies since I am focusing on studying engineering in college. But, as I though about it more is IB Math Studies weighted stronger than AP Calculus? Will the topics I learn in IB Math Stu…

ok so i just finished ib1 and going to enter ib2 in a few weeks i used to take hl math in ib1 and was predicted a 5 but i decided to drop right after getting my results on the last day... the main reason i decided to drop was cause my test results varied a lot, they werent consistent and i was afraid i would endanger my diploma and getting into a good uni if i got a bad grade (the highest test result i got was a 7, the lowest was a 2- complex numbers lol) and the main reason i even took hl math was to test my skills and get some knowledge i guess so yeah which leads me to my question, would it be hard to obtain a 7 in sl math with the same amount of work i did in hl…

Can my maths EE and IA be related ?
by Guest- 1 reply

So my maths EE is on different ways of solving cubic equations ( only about cardano's method and trigonometric method). but for my IA, I might want to do something about newton's method, which is a numerical analysis that can also be used to approximate cubic polynomial. In my EE, I just briefly mentioned the newton's method, did not demonstrate anything, just introduced it in a few sentences. That is it. In that case, do you think I can do my IA on Newton's method? They are kinda related.......

How does reference work ?!
by Guest- 1 reply

I am writing my maths EE and when I checked out some previous works, they only have a few references. They are demonstrating somebody's idea and using their equations, but they only cite the original source in the reference section, instead of using quote mark. For example, if I am doing quadratic formula,do I need to cite the person who discovered the formula ? Even though I am showing how it works and proving it. Also, if I want to mention somebody's book. Let's say (A) is the author, (B) is the book. In my EE, do i have to say 1990 (A) published (B) [1] where [1] is the reference, and I have to put his book in the reference section? But what if I couldnt find …

Hi, I'm really not at all sure what this exploration is supposed to be, and therefore am having trouble finding a topic. I have a couple of ideas: - Exploring the math in the book A Wrinkle in Time (the tesseract and such) - Which base is the most useful for math (like base 10, binary etc.) - Something about permutations and evolution? Do any of these sound like they might work? I have no idea how to go about this. Any advice would be appreciated! Also I am in HL math but am writing the SL exam, so it will be graded at SL. Thanks!

Hey I used to take HL Math last year but I am dropping to SL in the beginning of Grade 12 cause I thought I would do much better in SL. My teacher predicted me a 5 for HL and I was wondering what grade that would result in SL because I have no idea which teacher I am going to get for Math next year and I don't think I have enough time to show him/her what I can do since we get our predicted in October (That gives me 2-ish months in SL before I get my predicted s).

Hi everyone! I've been doing IB for a semester now, and I'm having some difficulty with maths SL. I've done two exams so far, in which I scored a 72% and a 67%, and I feel like having just done another one today, I'm going to do very badly. My notional grade (from my teacher) is 5, which isn't too bad but it's taking up so much of my time and stress that I'm not sure it's worth it. I'm considering dropping to maths studies, since I'm not really interested in the subject at all and then I can put more time into other subjects. I don't want to do any degree at university which will require it, since I love (and do well in) humanities like history and languages. Two…

I get that both math SL and math studies are SL classes. I know for sure that I'll get better grades if I choose math studies. however, there is a 30% chance that I'll study economics in Uni. I'm not good at math and taking math SL will definitely increase a lot of stress. Is it worth it? Can I study Economic in the top 100 Unis if I take math studies?

Hi, I have a question how to write a question number in the answer booklet in section B of mathematics appropriately. First of all, this is not a question about the questions itself in the exam, but a question about the tecnical part of writting question numbers of section B in the answer booklet. Today, we have written Paper 1. My question is what to do if we want to continue a question from first to second page. I know, that we need to write each question in a new page, but if we are continuing for example from page 1 to page 2, do we need to write the question number in both places. I know that in other subject there is no need to that, but i don't know if thats vaild …

So every time I finish a maths test, I'm happy because I did all the questions easily, I knew how to do them all. I get back the test and I only get 70%, yet I knew all the questions. I flip through my test. CARELESS MISTAKES EVERYWHERE It could be calculation errors (e.g. 5+7 = 9) or dropping an "x" in the equation forgetting the negative sign However much I study, i'll always make these mistakes. I feel like it's out of my control. I can do everything, know everything, but I'll make mistakes. HOW DO I CONTROL THIS AND STOP LOSING 30% ON JUST CARELESS MISTAKES???!!! Please help!! THanks everyone

Hi, I'm currently a grade 9 student and will be going through pre- IB evaluation next year. Now, I looked at the Math 20 IB curriculum for my IB school and WOW it's complicated! Let me provide some background firstly: math has never been a struggle for me. In fact, I have never gotten less than an A+ in mathematics IN MY LIFE. Just today, we had a surprise math evaluation, and I finished a solid 20 minutes before everyone else and still managed to score 100%. I am currently planning on selecting Math HL as an IB course, too. In order for me to succeed in IB mathematics, however, I know that I must develop a much more solid foundation. Could any one of you guys plea…

Hey. I'm currently at Pre-IB in Denmark and just chose Math Studies, which I will be starting this fall, but now I have started looking at universities (Scotland) and they seem to not accept Studies (Psychology and Business Management). My problem is that if I change to Math SL I don't think I will get the average I need. I am, and always have been, a total math failure. I understand roughly 30% of what we are doing in class and I'm only in Pre-IB. Any thoughts on what to do? Preferably from people who have struggled with math too, but managed to level up.

Hi, I have a TI N-spire Cx Handhels that I use for my Maths HL course. I thought that playing Gameboy games on the device would be kind of fun, but for that you need to install a type of jailbraking program into the calculator, which allows you to pretty much do anything on the device, like running the CAS full environment, which I presume would be a violation to the calculators possibilities. Who is the person to check your handhelds before the examination? Most of my teachers think my calculator is like from the future or a kind of iphone, since they have never seen anything other that Ti 84s, so you will guess ...

Ok so I was thinking about radians and then I thought why is radians in terms of a radius?. Why not use the diameter to derive an angle measurement? I'll call it diametrans for now. so since one full turn is equal to 2pi radians, it would be Pi "diametrans" and half a turn would be π/2 diametrans and so on. I guess its not groundbreaking or anything but did I think of a viable new angle unit or has it already been made but I don't know of it? Or does it not make sense?

Just saying, I will be starting pre- IB in like 11/12 months (got accepted today), so please don't judge my incompetency I need to find out the surface area of: (a) a trapezoid with a height of 0.05m, and bases of 0.05m and 0.03m. (b) a rectangle with sides 0.05m and 0.02m. I have to add the areas together- however I keep getting an answer of 0.003 m2! What am I doing wrong?

So how to differentiate the function on picture ? I know how to differentiate normal functions but I haven't been taught trigonometric ones yet. Or well, I know the derivative of sine is cosine, but how should I treat the degree number alpha (the variable here). Should I convert to radians? The r is "known" as this function is linked to the figure on the other picture (the purpose to investigate the area of the quadrangle with respect to alpha) ... Sorry if this question is too messed up, I guess my trigonometry is a bit rusty at the moment and I just recently started calculus so yeah... I'm grateful for help
