I'm a pre-IB freshman, and I am taking Algebra II H, and we are figuring out our math classes for sophomore year. I don't know if this is in every IB school, but in order to take Math SL or HL in Junior and Senior years, you must take Geometry H/Trig IB or Math Analysis/Trig IB in sophomore year. If you take Geometry H IB in sophomore year, you must go into Math Studies in Junior and Senior year, no question. This really worries me, because in order for me to take Geometry H/Trig IB it is suggested that I have a high B (over 85%). Sadly, this 1st Semester I got a C average. (1st Quarter: 79.8% 2nd Quarter: 83.4% Semester Exam: C). My teacher and counselor suggest that I t…

I need clarification if this topic is good to go, or whether i need to make any modifications or change the topic entirely. And could you assist me by telling the approach i should take for this topic?

Hi I'm Pre-DP student, and I would be interested in what books are the best ones to learn IB math syllabus individually. I have Oxford one already and it's good but for math I want to use two books, just because there might be different questions and things might be explained a bit different way. Reason I'm trying to study IB stuff is because it interests me and no, I can't wait for real IB because my school doesn't offer HL math. I'll be taking SL but HL stuff seems way more interesting so I'm trying to do some individual study I've been looking at IBID and Cambridge ones, does anyone have experience about them, and are there any other ones I should consider? Th…

Hi I consider myself to be mediocore in math. I figured the biggest problem of mine to be time consumed. On Pre-year I'm on now this is not that important as we have always had a lot time to do our exams, and for example on my latest math test I had 41/42 points (and one was lost by not naming x and y axises) However I used 1 hour more than anyone else. As on IB time limits are fairly tight how could I speed up my calculation process?

hi, I'd really appreciate someone's input / help on finding a math IA idea I honestly have no interest in math or the sciences, so finding experimental data and modelling in those fields wouldn't be a good idea in my perspective. I was looking at working with the pyramid schemes, looking at the how many would profit in a population looking at the different requirements (how many new members are required to be recruited in order for a current member to profit), and I met a complete dead end there. My data didn't correspond at all. So now I'm looking for a new topic and I'm absolutely stumped . I have a pretty strong interest in business and economics, but I would…

Hi. I had a topic about Math HL not being offered in my school - now I've been thinking about having a distance teacher from another IB school, of course this would cost a lot and im not sure if I can afford it. But theoretically speaking, how demanding would studying this way be? I need HL math for my future studies, at least for that I think I'm going to study now (engineering) Another thing is I'm already having 7 subjects as I will be studying all chemistry, physics and biology. It might be too challenging on long run, but I am quite confused with my choices now. Thanks for reading

Hello Guys, Could you please fill out this form and survey, for my math IA. It is due in 1 week and I really need as many results as possible. Its a very interesting survey. I'm doing a statistical analysis on the effect of vegetarianism and emotions. Investigation question: What correlation exists between a person’s diet (Vegetarian/Non Vegetarian) and his intelligence and emotions? Here is the link to the survey. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Jtou5F1EACXrwvbKtwNKC2Q-OCN3darAgkkzI9z5DUA/viewform Thanks. Sanna.

Hi. At first sorry for spamming Mathematics forum with my problems but I'm starting to desperate Situation is that for my dream, engineering studies on university HL Mathematics is usually required. Mathematics also interests me more than any other subject. My school however has decided to not offer HL Mathematics because some students have found it too challenging and had to drop to SL. My counselor turned me down when I asked if I could do it by examination, and said they cannot register me as HL student if it's not offered to anyone. So are there any other ways to do this important subject ? Thanks for reading

I've been thinking of doing my Math SL IA on the infinite monkey theorem (perms and comms; it's not the most complicated topic on the block, I know), but was disappointed to discover after some initial research that it's already been analyzed to a considerable extent. (quick wikipedia search) Am I allowed to do an IA on a topic that's already been so extensively researched? Thanks.

The Internal Assessment time is at it's finest, and everybody has lots of homework to do, however maybe there will be someone that could help here. I am thinking about doing my Mathematics IA on how the friction and air drag affects the velocity or acceleration of a car moving on ice and/or concrete. Does anyone have ideas about where to start? Could anyone recommend against doing this topic since maybe it's too much physics? Let me hear what you guys think. /Best Regards, fellow IB student

I'm entering my third month of the IB as an 11th Grader at an International School, I currently take English Language and Literature HL, Economics HL, Spanish B HL, and Portuguese B HL as well as Biology SL, TOK, and Math SL. I currently have all grades above 90% with an exception of 74% in Math. My school has a retake policy where students are allowed to retake tests with harder questions and in the case of math we are allowed to do rigorous Test Corrections which can give you up to half the points you missed back. Even with these policies I have been unable to strive in Math finding everything we learn very difficult and hard to keep up with. In the past my grades have …

Hello everyone! So I'm planning to do Medicine in Australia after the IB course, and as most of you know (or now you know), that in Australia, particularly NSW, don't necessarily have an pre-requisite subjects, they just want a very high IB score (translated to an ATAR equivalent) and a UMAT test score (Undergraduate Medicine logical test). I am currently in a dilemma on whether to take Maths SL or Maths Studies SL, I am looking for a 7 in either because ultimately, a high IB score is what I'm looking for. I got a grade 'A' in IGCSE Maths, but the thing is no one has achieved a 7 in Maths SL in my school, the highest was a 6, so it got me worried. It made me consider…

I wanna share about mathematics in my school. I really hate to say this but.. I'm the first batch that is doing IB in my school. The worst thing is that... The school didn't tell us that we all are in Math Studies SL! Oh for your information, they asked us to choose; Math SL or Math Studies SL. Lucky for my friend who is gonna take Math HL, he's going to do it online. But the stupid thing is the only person who wants to take Math Studies SL is my bestfriend and the others (including me) wanna take Math SL. My IB coordinator is useless. I was really mad at him, he didn't help at all. Plus, our math studies SL teacher can't even teach! Before IB starts, our favorit…

From 1-10 a) 1 b) 2 c) 3 ... 3. Did you like the food from whatever..? a) Yes b) No Thank you very much. Kind regards.…

Hey guys, I just got into an economics program at a university in Spain, and I have basically taken a gap year for travelling and another year studying marketing and business of fashion. Now it's time to get the bigger picture of what it is that makes the world go round and how to manage a company. Now, I haven't really studied any math since the IB so I was planning on buying one of the Math books to start preparing before classes start in September this year. Which math book would you recommend for someone majoring in economics..would that be Math SL? I took studies in the IB (started with SL but then switched to Studies), so not too sure about what SL entails...Sh…

I got 45% and my final mark dropped from 73% to 59%. Should I retake the exam? Am I still obligated to take the second IB course? Should I just retake math but just regular Math 30-1, not IB? Ultimately, I realized that IB was too much for me to handle too late. Now I'm just wondering what to do now. I'd probably be more upset if I actually knew what I wanted to do after High School. I don't even know what career path I want to take after post-secondary. I was never in full IB and I dropped the IB course in English and Social. I'm not half bad in Bio IB, but I didn't do too well in Physics 20 IB. Like, I got little over 65%, which is enough to pass, but I'm wonderin…

Hello guys, Since it's the summer, I need to finally re-start my EE since I discovered that my previous topic was way to simple. So, I have to start right from the beginning :/. Anyways, I just wanted to request for anyone to recommend me a topic/concept/problem in mathematics that I can explore for my Math EE. Something that is not too simple but also not too complex. I have to get this done by September 24, 2014. My favourite math topics are calculus, algebra, and trigonometry. However, I'm not a fan of probability and statistics. Update: I was thinking of Laplace transforms, Euler's method, or Taylor series as a topic for the EE. Any ideas as to doing this? …

This year, I'll be in IB Math SL. Although I would prefer to take HL since I plan on majoring in Physics, my school doesn't offer it (nor do they offer IB Physics, so I'm taking AP Physics along with my IB courses). I plan on applying to several selective universities, none of which grant credit for SL exams; this will make it challenging to enter with enough math credit to follow the desired course sequence relevant to my major. However, they do seem to offer credit for AP Calculus AB. Although my school does offer Calculus AB (but not BC), I don't want to give up on the IB Diploma in order to take it. I don't have room in my schedule to take both, either. This brings me…

I'm not discussing any material, nor am I saying which math exam I took (although it wouldn't be that hard to figure out i suppose). However, i've encountered a problem today: I found an error in the exam question. I'm not planning to disclose any information about the question, error, exam, etc., but I would like to know if anybody has ever been in my situation before and what was done. I'm 100% sure of it, I even laid out a proof for it (hopefully i managed to answer with the correct answer according to them). I just received a conditional offer from college which requires me to get at least a 6 on Math HL ;(. But I feel very discouraged every time when studying because I have never scored high on the exam at school. I have this Math HL book by Haese & Haris but I really have no idea on how to approach all the topics. Does anyone have any suggestion? For example, go through the book first for one chapter and then do past paper on that specific topic, or go through all the content in the book and do past papers once I finish the book. Any idea that works for you guys??
