Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

The word limit for the EE is 4000 words. If you go over this limit you lose marks. There is no minimum but for most subjects, you should expect to go above 3500 words. For experiment based subjects like sciences or math you can go as low as 2500 if there is sufficient formulae working (math) or data (sciences) or other things not included in the word count but suffices to show that you've done work on the essay. The word limit for the Abstract is separate and is 300 words. The following are not included in the word count: footnotes, appendices, abstract. Any direct quotations included in the body of the essay are included in the word count. If you don't want to include…

Hi all, I just replied to a specific/topic-based EE question, and I'll repost my reply here as some of the hints/tips/advice/comments could be useful to others Ok, so it's been over a year since I did my EE, but I'll try my best to give you some help/tips. - Your topic is wayyyyyyyyyyy too broad for an EE. You should try and make it a local topic, even if it's from a broad origin. I did mine on the effect of falling economic growth (as measured by GDP) in Australia (very broad) on the residential property market of the Brisbane postal code of 4000 (extremely specific). Ultimately I didn't like my topic as there were too many variables, but I managed to still get an…

Hey guys! so while i was going through the threads, i saw that none of them actually gave good pointers on how to write a very good abstract. So i've got a few notes which i'll share with everyone. They were handouts which my supervisor had given me, but i just condensed it into one. Good luck! HOW TO WRITE AN ABSTRACT An abstract is a concise, stand-alone statement that conveys the essential information contained in an article, book, research paper, or document. Written in a direct non-repetitive style, the abstract should: - Identify the problem (research question of thesis) investigated. - Describe the scope or method of investigation. - Summarize the results. - …

Its hilarious to think of a site that is considering helping future students when their time is so limited especially on an IB basis. How can new users "benefit from [the site]" when you are proposing them to post 100 comments/posts. I mean take my intention as an example. I want my second post to be an economic guide to "benefit [the site]" ,with my essay attached to it, but how would it be possible for me to open my own essay, or my other friends'. T_T [administrator] ; Dues, lc, and hms, please see to my request upon giving more acknowledgeable privileges to the new IB'ers. I understand by what you meant when you thought that people could "benefit themselves only". B…

The title is pretty much self-explanatory (lol) but if not, this is a post about writing an a1 language ee, primarily focused on english obviously, and based largely on personal experience. If you have any questions about this post (turned out longer than I expected!) or the ee itself, send me a message. Also, if you have a draft and are looking for feedback, I might be able to help. Ground rules first - you need to have a good grasp of your the language you are writing your extended essay (latin and ancient greek possibly excepted) -- and this probably means a good grade in the relevant class. Choosing good supervisor, and one you are on good terms with, is also a good i…

Hello, I was going to put my EE up on managebac to do a quick citation check to see if I missed any references but managebac only gave me a number and no way to access the detailed report. Would anyone be able to inform me if this feature has been disabled or are teachers only allowed to view it? Thank you!

I made the stupid decision of writing my EE on a subject which my school doesn't offer, and regret it... but whatever! I'd love it if somebody who takes the course or goes to a school that offers it could help me out by sending me some kind of study guide, curriculum, a sample essay of any kind or even putting me in contact with somebody would help-- I'm just looking to better understand the subject and hopefully find someone that can give me some tips or even read my essay! Thank you so much guys!!

Hi I'm trying to find a good topic for my Extended essay, and I'm very bad when it comes to choose something for myself like that... And I don't want to have a subject that doesn't interest me because I chose it at the last minute ! So, I was thinking about doing it about Molecular Cooking, do you think it's a good idea (if you know it)? I don't know much about it but I'm interested in cooking and I think it can be related to Chemistry or Biology (the two subjects in which I'm thinking to do my EE) But now I wonder what question I can ask about it, do you have any idea ? I was thinking, maybe: "Can molecular gastronomy be the food of the future ?" in Biology, or "H…

Do the title's 'What factors induce the zigzag motion of a knuckle ball?' or 'Can we predict the destination of a knuckle ball?' Sound like good EE Physics titles. The answers for the questions have not been given a firm answer by scientists/physicist yet. What I want to do is collect data from researches that have been done on that topic and use it on my ee and give reasonable conclusions. So would it be a good idea to just explore the idea for my EE???? HELP!!! plz. My EE first draft deadline is in two weeks!

on IBIS, it says that my extended essay is candidate submitted, and not submitted as it is stated on my TOK essay. I would like to clarify that I only shortened some quotes to fit the word count, but I changed this after completing the viva voce reflection (everything else is the same). I also did not submit this shortened, updated version to Managebac, only to the IBIS platform, and it still states that it is "candidate submitted". Does this mean that my essay cannot be authenticated due to this change? Am I in trouble? I would really like some feedback ASAP. thank you!

Hi everyone, I'm about to start my second year of the IB and I still haven't managed to think of a subject for my EE. Now everyone says, do something that interests you etc and the one thing that really interests me is skateboarding. It is something that I enjoy more than anything. Now this might sound really stupid, but do you think it would be able to base an EE on skateboarding? =/ I have had so much trouble thinking of a topic. I was thinking of fuel cells in cars, but this would be more interesting. It would probably be with physics, perhaps how to make the concave and angles etc to give the optimum leverage? I dont know, I'm really stuck Any advice would be h…

I need to submit an EE research question proposal in two weeks. I have decided to choose English Literature as the subject to do my EE and finally settled on the book 'Life of Pi' by Yann Martel (so a category 1 english EE). I am having trouble choosing a specific question for that book. I feel like it contains a lot of themes that could be great in analysis but I don't know which one to pick. For examples, I am having trouble picking one of these themes in the book: religion, the struggle for survival, the role of morality in the struggle of survival, anthropomorphism, the parallel between the Pi's story with the animals and the humans, the role of despair and doubt…

I am writing a Physics EE, and I have been having some trouble with the "reasoned argument" criterion. For my EE, I conducted an experiment, and I am trying to find a correlation in my data. I don't really see how an argument fits in to experimental science EEs such as this. The data that I collected is objective, so I don't see where that leaves me any room to make an argument. Does anyone get what I am saying?

Hello everyone. At the moment I am working on my first draft for my Extended Essay, I am doing English A. One worry I have is that my choice in topic is 'well worn'. My chosen novel isn't as overdone as books like 1984 or Lolita for example, but it was very popular on its release in the 1990s. I am also studying one of the novel's central themes, but admittedly I am adding some unique spins and analysis. Would choosing well worn book or topic be a major issue? Thanks for the help!

Hey! So I'm doing my EE in physics, about exoplanets, which means I mention a lot of planets that are named like "51 Pegasi b" for example, and that already is 3 words. I was wondering if it's strict like that, or would such names be considered one word? Same thing with numbers like 3 000 000. Also, I put my in-text references like (1) (is that the correct method? I can change it but so far I haven't heard anything about it), and that also counts as a word, will that be included in the final word count?

Hello, I want to do my EE in the English category and was thinking of studying fairy tales. I'd like to analyze fairy tales from various cultures, focusing on something like the archetype of the evil stepmother or representation of the seven deadly sins. I'm just not sure which sub-category this would fall under. I figured it wouldn't be a 1 because I'm using some texts originally in other languages. But I'm not sure if it falls under 2 or 3. So I was wondering if this could potentially be a good topic and if so, what category would it fall under. Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Hey everybody I'm new here and I really need some help with my EE. My EE title is: "To what extent could the characters from Henrik Ibsen's plays, Nora Helmer and Hedda Gabler be categorized as archetypes according to Carl Jung's Theory of the Collective Unconscious?" I realize that it sounds more like a psych EE but it's really more on the characters themselves (if they embody ONLY one archetype or if it's possible that they can embody two) and I would appreciate it if someone can explain in great detail (if you have the time) the mother and trickster archetypes according to Carl Jung. I've read about them over and over but I just can't seem to fully understand them. …

So here I am during the summer between my two IB years. In my school, the deadline for the first draft is shortly after the beginning of the second year. We are meant to write the essay over the summer. Thus, I have conducted research and collected results and had a research question. I took a break for a month after this and now look back upon my question, only to notice it is way too simple. My original question is as follows: How does temperature affect the dissociation of citric acid within oranges, lemons, and limes in direct reference to the position of equilibrium? I collected pH values at every temperature for every fruit and planned to use this to …

Hey, So its that horrible time when you have to choose a topic for your EE. No sweat right, at most its only like, three points? I'm interested in economics, a bit clumsy in the and terrible at English. That leaves maths or economics. I'm not doing a maths essay. I've got an interest in urban design so want to do something related to that, combine it with economics and externalities of car consumption immediately come to mind. Throw in some tragedy of the commons. I understand we must collect some data ourselves, so this leaves me focusing on an increasingly congested road near the school. My question is that is this to much of a limiting topic for my essay. Obviously th…

I have decided to write EE in biology. I have two options in mind, however, to do the one I would prefer to do I need some additional information which currently I cannot find anywhere. Basically, I would do gel electrophoresis which means that I need DNA sample. This, however, means that I would have to use human blood. The question is- does IB support using blood to gain DNA samples, if it is done with the approval of the person whose blood is used, blood is taken by a nurse and otherwise safety precautions are followed while working with the blood? If it is ok, where can I find this information's official source? Thank you in advance. -rita

I am having some trouble defining the question for my EE, I am interested on destructive interference of light. My interest came from observing this effect on the shadows of objects in sunshine early in the mornings. Currently I am designing an experiment that uses a colored light bulb (helps keep the intensity of the light equal on all points of the light bulb) and varying distances between two objects and the light bulp (particularly on the "y" axis ) to try and simulate the phenomenon of the shadows in the morning sunlight. I am trying to define a question in order to give direction to my experiment design and investigation. I have noticed that the destructive interfe…

General Issue: I am in the middle of working on my Russian Revolution EE, and I am having trouble finding primary sources to refer to in my paper. Ideally I'd love to find some Bolshevik propaganda, but any good primary source site would be great. So far the best site I have found is [url="http://www.soviethistory.org/"]http://www.soviethistory.org/[/url]. Citation issue: One of the sources that I am using is The Russian Revolution (Essential Readings in History). Previously, I had been citing all quotes from this source as (Miller, p. #). I just realized that each section is written by a different historian. Am I safe citing each reference as I am, or should I ref…

I'm a bit stuck on my research question; after having done some research I'm concerned there's just not enough out there to write it.
