Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

Hi All, So I am currently in the process of figuring out a title and RQ for my EE, which will most likely focus on eating disorders, specifically anorexia. However, my question is would the IB appreciate well written and evaluated topic For example, if I were to write a "relatively common" EE, my RQ's would look something like: RQ: To what extend do -- factors play a role in the full recovery from anorexia nervosa. RQ: To what extent are genetic factors a cause for anorexia RQ: How does anorexia nervosa affect social development of teenage girls RQ: What kind of treatment is the most effective for the recovery from anorexia nervosa/buli…

What do i do if my supervisor doesn't have time to give me proper feedback with my EE and doesn't give me enough constructive criticism even though I handed in the first draft on time and currently only have 2 weeks left to the final hand in. Is there anyone who I could get in contact with who could review my EE? Additionally, my school won't resolve this issue, as it is too late to change a supervisor and there is nothing I can do about it.

I am really passionate about math and cars, so I decided to do my IA on racing lines and mathematical approximations of them. The trouble is, I am lost as to how to start. I don’t know how to approach this (should I start with a single corner and try to come up with a line for it?), and furthermore, I can’t prove that the line is the best/better; that would be physics. Should I switch topics or could I save this topic, as it really interests me?

Hey guys, I'm really interested in law and I'm trying to go to college for law, and as my EE topic, I want to write about Unitary Executive Theory, a debated constitutional theory in the US. However, we have to pick a subject area to place our EE into, and I don't know what courses could fit a law EE. I was thinking maybe a literature subject, or maybe anthropology, or global politics. Can anyone possibly think of ways to fit a law EE into the IB curriculum?

Hi, pls help. I have drafted a research question for my EE which I am doing on English category 2 but have no idea if its good and my supervisor has no idea on anything about extended essays. I wanted to explore the theme of forgotten childhood in the books "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens and "Captains of the Sand" by Jorge Amado, and in the theme explore the human relationships in the gangs which contrast a lot. I don't know how to draft a RQ that is going to be broad enough for me to explore all of this. I'm not sure if I should post it here because of IB rules and stuff but if someone can help pls reply to this and I can send it!

Hi so i'm having trouble on narrowing down my EE topic. I know for certain that I would like to do it on Genghis khan and I have a few topics that I will list below but I don't know if they are narrow enough or are even relevant. Can anyone help with this? To what extent did the cavalry tactics of Genghis Khan change how war was fought? How did Genghis Khan's use of artillery influence how modern wars are fought? To what extent is Genghis Khan the most successful military tactician in history?

Hi everyone! So I’m a junior this year and I’ve been putting some thought into my EE, I’m really interested in psych and have been thinking of tests I could do that follow the Ethics Guidelines and would answer my questions. Are we allowed to produce our own data and research in a psych EE or must we use already established data? Thanks! :)

I have my first draft due in 2 days and my final draft for submission due in 6 days, I have only planned my essay, my essay question is: Are any essential amino acids deficient in a vegan diet? I have just read a thread which specifies NOT to do any group 4 essays without experiments, but, up to today, I have arranged my essay with my supervisor (who has never taught IB) to be literature-based, and I beleive it is too late to change that now; will that affect my grade? Also, I am vegan and was wondering if I take a blood test wether that can be used or identified as an experiment... What do you think? I would also greatly appreciate if anyone knows a place where I can fin…

So I need help because I originally had a EE topic that I recently discovered wouldn't work out so I have now been scrambling to come up with a new one. My new basic topic is: The effect of temperature on sound waves. But I need help refining this because I'm not sure where to go from here. Any help would be really appreciated, particularly if: - You have finished a physics EE and have advice - You have knowledge on sound waves and their variables - You have any other ideas for a new direction for this topic - Any related research you know of - etc. Thank you!

I'm in the pre-IB program at my high school in Canada. I have always been interested in CS, and I would like to do my EE on that topic. The thing is, my school doesn't offer Computer Science in IB, Next year (Grade 10), I am taking the Grade 12 non-IB CS course, but will it be enough? (Grade 11 and Grade 12 are the IB years for my school system) Also, I'm wondering what topic my EE should be on. I've been thinking of something like "On the Usage of Genetic Programming to Model Evolution" but I'm not sure if that'll be a good topic. Can anyone who is experienced in CS tell me about possible topics I could do?

Hello, I am currently struggling as our E.E. first draft is due in very soon and I still do not have a topic. My supervisor is a geography teacher and he wants me to do it on geography (shocking I know) but nothing really interested me when I went through examples. Therefore, I am thinking on doing World Studies and came up with a few ideas. My main idea has to do with discrimination against women and I thought Malala would be a good example to use so maybe something to do with the situation regarding women and education in Pakistan focusing on Malala? But I don't know what subject I would be able to use in that case. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know,…

Hello, I've been having a lot of trouble settling on a question. My advisor is not replying to my email so I can't get anything approved. My idea is the application of calculus in numbers of different bases (normally we go by base 10 so I can investigate the applicability of calculus in base 9, base 8, etc. ) Does this question look alright? Some other ideas: Does finding the number of prime numbers in any range using the Euclidean algorithm work? I can write about the proof of the Euclidean algorithm and then use computers to apply the euclidean algorithm on all integers. Or maybe a combination of Euclid's method and the euclidean algorithm to fin…

Hello, I am starting to do my Psychology Extended Essay. I struggled for a while to choose a theme. I'm considering doing an EE on perfectionism and procrastination right now. I still haven't decided what the question will be (it will be something like „ To what extent does (maladaptive) perfectionism affect/cause procrastination“ , „If perfectionism causes procrastination, what specific components of perfectionism are responsible for procrastination“). Originally, I was planning on writing my EE on bio or chem, but then I found out that you have to do an experiment in order to get a decent grade. Carrying out any of my original experiments at my school wouldn't be possible because we don't have the equipment, and we don't have any other research labs in my area that I could use. So I ditched the idea of a science EE which leaves me with Math (which I'm horrible at) and French (which many people recommended not doing for the EE), English (which I find boring no matter what), and History. I really enjoyed doing my History IA and I got a 7 on it, so I thought I should do my EE in History too. I have two very knowledgeable …

Hello, So I foolishly assumed that the math EE would be the same as a math ia and chose math. Now I'm having some trouble choosing a question. Does game theory and the game gomoku or maybe connect four work? (gomoku is like connect 5 but on a 15x15 board and you can place wherever instead of just dropping pieces down in columns) Or maybe researching how the AM and GM inequality can be used on polynomials? Like how the laws are applicable and can be used in polynomials. Or maybe the use of newtons sums on recursion?

I'll be using red (maybe orange), green and with LED lights and have one plant in natural sunlight. The control is a plant grown with no light. I'll be measuring the growth of the plant as my dependent variable. Should I measure something else instead of growth? e.g. vitamin C content.
