Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

My EE research question is "How does varying concentrations of CaCO3 affect the catechin levels of green tea", but I'm running into problems into how exactly to measure it. The basis for my question is to test how does varying mineral content of water affect the taste of tea, and in my research I found that CaCO3 was one of the minerals in water, and catechin is the main component of green tea which affects the bitterness and astringency (effectively taste). I wanted to use spectroscopy but the maximum absorbance for catechin is around 270nm, which is far lower than the machine I have available to me, which only uses the visible light spectrum (around 400-700nm). I w…

Hi! I'm doing prompt 34 for my ToK exhibition, and, well, I can't find a third object. My first two objects are pretty strong, but for the third object, I can't find anything that "brings a new perspective into the discussion." Now I'm stuck. Any help would be appreciated.

I am not sure if I should change it although it is a little late for that but still possible. Maybe to switch to causes?

Hey guys! I've been doing my Extended Essay about the Traveling Salesman Problem, but now I realize I'm not sure about my Research Question, and by the way, not even the subject (Math or Computer Science). I wonder if you could give me some feedback on it. My actual research question is: Proving the Traveling Salesman Problem is an NP-Complete problem. I'm thinking about maybe changing it to see how a specific algorithm (the simplex one, by Dantzig) actually helped to solve large instances of the TSP. Help, please, I'm lost. Thank you in advance!

Hello! I am currently doing a Geography EE and am a bit lost on how to come up with a concrete question to base my research off of. My question revolves around - - To what extent is the HDI of Kerala and British Columbia comparable in terms of poverty development? (Full changed question still in works) - poverty in BC (what is the government doing) - poverty in Kerala (what is the government doing) - poverty headcount ratio - How does gender play a role? - Possibly some section due to COVID 19 I am a BC resident, so I am able to possibly collect first hand primary data for one of the places, but not the other. The idea I pitched to my teacher was something along the lines of "To what extent will GPU and CPU processing speeds have to be in order to create a gaming experience indistinguishable from reality?" I thought of researching VR, GPU and CPU power, clock speeds, etc. But I was told that doing this exploration would have no use. What does anyone else think? I am thinking of doing something about cryptocurrency. "To what extent is cryptocurrency a more practical alternative to cash/credit?" I haven't asked my teacher yet, but I think it would lean more towards ITGS (since i'll be talking about effects on the environment and society as well), not too sure. What doe…

Hi! My research question is "To what extent is cryptocurrency a more practical alternative to cash? For anyone who can give tips, is there a better way to word this RQ? like adding an "in terms of" or using a different adjective other than "practical", etc? Also, for anyone who has done a similar EE or has firsthand knowledge and experience on cryptocurrency, please do leave a reply if you have any tips or recommended links, or if we could even have a quick chat as one of my primary resources (having a real hard time looking for any), any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

My topic to my extended essay is "To what extent is the Mongolian Empire a peaceful society." I'm going to make the argument that the Mongolian Empire was actually a peaceful society due to the Pax Mongolia, religious tolerance, etc. despite conquering nearly all of Eurasia through pillage and rape. I would simply enjoy the knowledge if this topic is overdone, too broad, too specific, etc., or if I should change the specific topic name a little smidge. Thanks everyone

Hi, I need help fixing my extended essay question. My topics are bio and psych and my question is "How does implicit racial bias in healthcare influence how often black people are diagnosed with Lyme disease?" My mentor said its hard to write about, so I need help fixing it. I've tried to restructure the question a few times, but I'm still confused, I wanted to make it about misdiagnosis and how black people are often misdiagnosed with diseases, but my mentor told me to focus on a specific disease, but I don't know which to focus on. She also wanted me to focus on symptoms of a disease that only black people get, but I've only found symptoms that black people have a highe…

Hi all, I was researching topics for my Extended Essay and I thought of doing either something with Jane Austen (let me know if you have any ideas!) or the Iliad. I had read The Song of Achilles (Madeline Miller) recently, and I thought I could do something around the societal changes between Homer’s Iliad and the 2011 Song of Achilles. For example, The Song of Achilles is a homosexual live story, whereas Homer did not write the Iliad like such. Was wondering what you thought about this topic, is it interesting? Could it be well executed? Thank you!

Hi, I had several issues regarding my Extended Essay in Psychology. First: Which research question would be the most suitable? Option 1: To what extent is criminal behaviour based on biological factors? Option 2: To what extent can biological factors predict criminal behaviour? Option 3: Is criminal behaviour primarily based on biological factors? Second: While I have all my ideas and research with reference to the issue ready, I do not know how to put it down in a format suitable for an EE, for eg: the IA has a very specific format that is simply the marking criterion itself. How do the plan the structure, or chart out points for my Extended Essay? Third: Doe…

So I left this until the last moment and I really should have a vague plan ready by now but it is what it is. Anyways, so I've decided to do my essay about Tolkien (language A1) but I'm struggling to narrow it down to a book or a topic, let alone a research question. Any help? Here are my thoughts so far: 1. Something about Gollum - villain vs hero type of stuff - but I'm sure it's overdone by now 2. Something along the lines of "who's the real hero" and compare Frodo, Sam, maybe some other characters - but again I'm sure it's been done a lot 3. Compare Bilbo and Frodo's journeys?? Not too keen on the idea but still 4. Maybe something to do with B…

Hi! I am in the early process of figuring out my EE topic. Ideally, I want to do it in English A lang/lit, and have recently got the inspiration for an idea, but I'm not confident that it's a good one. 'The Stormlight Archives' by Brandon Sanderson is a fantasy series that I'm quite passionate about. One of its core themes is mental health, with many (most) of its main characters dealing with various mental health issues, depicted in a (by my subjective standards) faithful and creative manner, and even to a degree integrated into the magic system. However, due to the extraordinary circumstances inherent to the fantasy setting, as well as what I feel to be a…

(PLEASE don't steal this, it's not even good). And so far, I have around 2700 words. To make a long story short: My friend bought his extended essay online, with some kind of custom writing service, and his supervisor knows it and even told him that the IBO will never know that he bought this essay. He is not worried and his supervisor is not worried either, I read his essay, it's truly at a super-high academic level. I am really afraid that he will get caught and fail his diploma, and even he doesn't get caught, he is still cheating. How should I convince him to stop with it and write his own essay instead? Help me!

Hi guys, I have to hand in a EE proposal soon, but I still can't think of a topic. I also have to keep in mind that I am pursuing a career in medicine so any topics related to medicine would be a plus. So, I have a dilemma. Thing is, my school made me choose my EE topic a few months back (around August or so), and I chose History. I worked roughly on my History essay about Napoleon, but then I realised that I hated it. I mean, I love history - I just hate historiography. Anywho, I then thought of another EE question for English. Thing is, I am three days away from starting my IB2 Year and I fear it may be too late to change subjects. Plus I think my supervisor will kill me. What do you think?

so I've been thinking lots about what to do for my ee, and I was really interested in doing film, but they don't teach it at my school. I was wondering if there are any helpful textbooks for basic film studies or anything for the question i was planning to do, "How does the development of special effects, such as cgi and greenscreen, impact intergenerational appreciation for movies?" Even my question needs a little work, so if there's any other questions that can be made from a topic like this, that would be great.

Hi! So, I was planning on doing my ee with the research question asking how the author uses imagery to convey her writing and feelings, since I am doing various poems from the same writer with the same purpose, but then as I was writing, I realized I was analyzing the first poem and not focusing on its imagery. Can I have a research question asking how the author uses literary devices to convey her writing and feelings?? Or is it too broad? I don't know if just analyzing the poem is enough, so please let me know if it is ok to analyze the poem as a whole and not focuss on one specific literary device.

Hi all, I'm considering doing my Extended Essay studying the extent to which a universal basic income could improve socioeconomic conditions in my country. I want to approach the question by mixing Economics (which I don't take) and History (which I take at an HL) to understand the current socioeconomic conditions, how they can be improved and whether or not a UBI could aid in improving them. Is this too Economics-heavy or can it still be counted as a World Studies EE? Thanks

Hi, I am taking Psychology HL and I want to do my Extended Essay Topic in the field of Psychology. My current question is "How does The Penthouse: War in Life exhibit how narcissistic parents can contribute to mental health effects in their children?". So I am doing my EE on Economics, and I have decided to investigate on the market structure of the pharmaceutical industry in Shanghai. To collect primary data, I will be interviewing one of the heads who works in Astrazeneca and hopefully having some access to the company's data. My research question will be "what is the market structure of pharmaceutical industry in Shanghai?" I am not sure if the research question is sufficient and narrow enough. It sounds rather plain to me. I am also not sure if I can just determine the market structure by just investigating on one company since there are probably a lot more pharmaceutical firms in China. Thanks.

I am currently struggling with figuring out my EE topic for Biology. I want to do a hands-on (primary) experiment regarding the topic, "disease", but know that it will be difficult with the resources I currently have in school. I am really interested in investigating on diseases, and believe that writing the extended essay based on secondary research would be easier and better, but I read a few comments on how it tends to not receive high grades compared to the ones that are hands-on. Are there any recommended Biology EE topics that could perhaps relate to diseases, or anything I could perhaps test on people (classmates, family, teachers, etc.)?

Hi all. I'm planning on doing an EE in English, category 1. What are your thoughts on my RQ- at the moment my biggest concern is that it might be too descriptive rather than analytical, in terms of language.
