Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

I'm planning to explore anaerobic digestion and the production of methane from different compositions of organic food waste. I could create a small biodigester and use different feedstocks for each experiement. I was also thinking if I could get a methane gas analyzer, I could track the volume/ concentration of methane over time and do something regarding the kinetics of anaerobic digestion. The composition of the waste could be determined by CHNSO contents or % ratio of carbohydrate, protein, lipid. Is the essay viable?

it's already mid-august, and i haven't gotten much done (if anything) for my history ee. i am focusing on the vietnam war; my question is "to what extent was the ho chi minh trail a significant factor to the victory of north vietnam" i've been looking up articles and such for debates and different perspectives, but maybe i haven't been searching hard enough because there is practically nothing that satisfies my question, which has started to make me more and more anxious about completing the ee. i can't get a hold of my supervisor to help me narrow down my question and guide my question a little more.

Hello, So recently I've been working on my EE and I've noticed that my research question might be a bit too constraining, yet I have no idea what amount of depth will suffice. Plus, my draft is due September 6th so I would like to get everything sorted by then. My current RQ (translated) is: "How does the representation of hope change from x to y through the use of rhetoric in Angela Merkel's speeches about the corona pandemic?" I'm thinking about removing the part about rhetoric so that my research question just focuses on how the representation of hope has changed in angela merkels' speeches from x to y date. Any and all help is appreciated!

Hey guys, hope everyone reading this is well. I need some help deciding on my official research question for the EE. I am quite behind on the EE because we have some deadlines coming soon and I have yet to research my topic and question because I cannot formulate a strong research question. My EE topic is on the Hippie movement (history) and my initial research question was "To what extent was the Hippie Movement successful in advocating against violence and war during the 1960s and 1970s?" but relooking at it and after doing some more research I am concerned it is a weak research question. My teacher also suggested that I make some clear differences between the hippie mo…

Hey guys, I've decided to write my English EE on various Eminem songs. My rq is not fully done but it should be along the lines of: "How does Eminem use stylistic devices to effectively portray the diminishing effects of violence in his songs?" My supervisor told me to have 6 songs and connect them to 3 types of violence (domestic violence, emotional, etc.) My dilemma right now is that finding high-quality secondary sources on Eminem's lyricism is nearly impossible and that my EE in general is way too simple. I feel that broadening my topic to rap in general (rather than just Eminem himself) will make it easier to find secondary sources. However, I'm stuck on what I …

Hi everyone, I am struggling with my research question so I would like to ask for your opinion and help. I have originally chosen two books Dr No and On Her Majesty's Secret Service both original Bond novels by Ian Fleming, from which I wanted to choose just one for my EE. First, I was determined to do OHMSS, then I switched to Dr No, but now I have no idea what to choose because I'm struggling with my research question. In case of Dr No, I would like to explore the depiction of women (namely the leading Bond girl) and try to prove that she is actually not that 'overly sexualized stereotype', or an object 'of go-be-looked-at-ness' as usually understood and said about…

Hey guys, I've decided to get started on my EE draft and I chose a new topic because I felt that the previous topic was a bit too narrow. I decided to refine my topic and I was wondering if you guys could give input on whether or not I should narrow it down a bit more. Hello, I am a DP1 student taking biology HL. I chose to do my EE on biology, however, I am still unsure of my topic... We were already submitted our proposals, but the topic I initially chose is far too challenging for me, as I chose "antibiotic resistance in bacteria", I thought I would be able to conduct this experiment, but the more I researched, I was not able to get anywhere. So I am now considering a non-experimental route, but I heard that it is really hard to get a good grade or even pass through this method. I have a topic in mind, and it would concern the developmental stages of a specific species. I know this would be impossible to do in a lab, so it woul…

I know, you're all going crazy. But before you just rule it out completely, please honestly think about it and tell me if it could work. As a swimmer, I have often heard about the use of lactate testing to increase performance. Lately, however, there has been a bit of a debate with its productivity. So, I decided that I wanted to write an essay debating its effectiveness. My plan is to first briefly summarize the history of lactate testing in athletics, including swimming. I will then discuss aerobic and anaerobic respiration, and apply the concepts to the sport of swimming. I will then generate my answer to the question regarding its usefulness, but then test out y own t…

Hi there, On the IB Extended Essay Guide, it says the following about the WS EE: "Successful interdisciplinary essays require an integrative argument or explanation—that is, the different subjects should be coherently brought together to address the question through, for example: a complex causal explanation a leading metaphor a model an analogy." Now, I'm a bit confused. I kind of get the meaning of the first bullet, but what on earth do the last three bullet points mean? Are they saying that I should use…

Hi, I have come up with an RS "How does the acquisition of Whole Foods by Amazon impact its global market share in the e-commerce industry?", where it's mostly focused on researching on Amazon, especially its global market share. However, the internet and other sources have too much about Amazon and I am a bit confused and thrown back on which areas about Amazon should I research on. I plan on creating a checklist of basic areas I should research on so that I don't go off-track. Can I get some ideas about what should I be looking out for when researching? (like find statistics about its global market share, competitors and etc.) Many thanks in advance!

Hi IBSurvival Forum! As I am approaching my analysis portion of my research-based extended essay, I would be delighted to get some feeback on analysis I have planned and subsequent conclusion. Before I go into the main point of this post, my stubborn foolishness led me to stick to a Bio EE, and I would just like to say it is immensely difficult to write a biology extended essay that meets the IB requirement to a high standard. My supervisor happened to be the EE coordinator as well as my biology teacher and the essays she had supervised previously were all research-based essays. Out of the 13 she supervised, 5 got As and 4 got Bs. Hence, in her experiences, if…

Hi all! Due to COVID, we are unable to conduct any experiments or collect any primary data at school. If we want to complete a biology EE, we must do a databased or secondary research based paper. From what I've seen online, everybody seems to strongly advise against writing literature based science EEs as they typically score lower. Does anyone have any first-hand experience in writing a literature based bio EE and/or any advice? I couldn't find any exemplars of this type that scored too well. Bio is something that I'm super interested in but since it is early on, I can still switch to another subject area. Thanks

Hello, forums. I've just joined here hoping for assistance in picking a more refined EE question. I am in year II of the diploma programme, and am pressed for time regarding my EE. My original Extended Essay was on aerodynamics, but due to several problems it didn't work out. As a result, I've had to make a decision to change my EE topic, and physics is what I'm sticking with. Currently, my chosen topic is optics - lenses, and while I'd prefer to do it on aperture, diffraction, or distortion, I'm open to doing other things in optics as well. By this point things have gotten to a head and I have to decide really quickly both a question and my experiment. I'm open to anyone…

So my topic was the comparisons in characterization between J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and Severus Snape over the course of the series. I wanted to compare and contrast the character development of both Harry Potter and Severus Snape, and how they both relate to the common theme of being the series' hero through different motifs. My research question is, "To what extent do J.K. Rowling's characterizations of Harry Potter and Severus Snape compare and contrast over the course of the series?"

Hi =) I'm about to start on my biology EE and I've been researching a suitable question/topic to do it on. My supervisor has suggested I do it based on plants, and I'm following it seeing a safer path. Can anyone tell me if it sounds too common or if it is better to change it slightly?

First id like to thank you for spending time reading this and try to help me out. i really appreciate it. =] My EE is on maths, about game theory. But here is the thing, ive read some old thread on IB forums and people have said since there are so many topics you can talk about in Maths you cant really expect the marker to know everything about you topic. So im facing a dilemma right now. Should my EE be like a 4000 words introduction of Game Theory for like beginners or people who know nothing (or not much) about game theory? or should i do like a specific game theoretical analysis on a game? (i can use some suggestions which game i should do as well) and by the way, Ive…

So I was thinking of doing my extended essay in ESS and maybe do an experiment which somehow has to do with agriculture. What I have in mind is maybe getting an agricultural plant and making it grow while using different amounts of pesticides and maybe use three different pesticide and go from there. But I'm not quite sure, especially since this would be my teacher's first time helping a student out with an IA. However I really want to do an EE in ESS and more specific, do an experiment since I want to do something that is "hands on". I would appreciate if someone could advice me with this or maybe give me an idea of an experiment that I could do. Thank you!

I recently responded to a post which made me think about my EE. My EE is a very complicated topic that I find quite interesting. The experiment, on the other hand is quite simple. I will only be collecting one data which is Time. I will calculate other simple things like molar mass, moles, etc. But I don't really have any harcore chemistry in here. What should I do and will this negatively affect my mark?

Alright, so for my chemistry EE I'm hoping to do something relating to lithium/alkaline batteries. So far the research question is structured along the lines of; "To what extent does Temperature affect the shelf life of lithium/alkaline batteries?" We have enough room that I can run both experiments simultaneously, in case one of them goes wrong, but I'd prefer to focus on the lithium batteries. The issue however, is that I'm not sure this could pass as chemistry, since I have yet to do the electrochem unit, which is one of the first we do next year. Would this topic be acceptable to as a chemistry topic or does it encroach on physics territory/it's too basic?
