Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

I am a junior in IB, currently thinking about what I want to do for my EE. Always been interested in space, and a mars landing will hopefully be happening in our lifetime, so I thought I should write about it. I was hooping to get some advice relating to what exactly I could hone in on, I've heard countless times that you need to be specific. I was thinking how the bases could be set up, how the landing could be executed, how the launch could be executed, etc. I was hoping to get into something more theoretical, but I've read in many places that physics papers are more likely to succeed if they are experimental. If anyone has any advice, ideas, suggestions, or critics, pl…

Hi, I want to do my Extended Essay in geography, but I am not sure If my idea is good enough. The topic I most liked to study until now was the anti and pro-natalist policies, especially the One Child Policy in China. My idea was to write about how did this policy change the sex ratios and what are the consequences of this change. I know it is still too abstract, but I want to know if this idea makes sense and maybe hear some opinions. Thank you!!!

Hello, I am looking to do my Math EE in an area of higher dimensional calculus. If anyone has any math EE samples that pertain to higher dimensions in any way and you can share it, either here or by private message, that would be highly appreciated! It would really help me with starting my research and writing my EE.

Hello everybody, I was wondering if I could receive any feedback about my proposed EE research question. Here is my question in relation to History: To what extent was the Tet Offensive the main turning point in the United States decision to leave Vietnam during the Vietnam War 1955-1975. Thank you!

I'm writing my EE on my absurdity in a sci-fi novel, and I'm stuck in choosing quotes. What would count as absurdity? Like do I just choose the scientific "facts" that are made up by the author, or does any satire/parody count as absurdity? I've been stuck on this for about 2 weeks now and my teacher's getting tired of me being stuck.

I've chosen to do my Math EE on non-Euclidean geometry, but I'm struggling to be focused on my research, especially because I'm not sure if some of the topics within non-Euclidean geometry are too difficult for a high school student. At this point, I'm willing to change my whole topic and maybe just focus on an interesting IMO puzzle. Are there any suggestions for research topics?

Hi!! I am currently a junior choosing a subject for the EE. I am having problem choosing between which subject I should take, psychology or biology. I am interested in both subjects, but I’ve heard the psych EE is graded harder. The teacher who teaches IB psych is very helpful though. On the other hand, our Bio IB HL teacher is not available to teach anymore, so a substitute bio teacher who is okay in IB is taking her place. I feel a bit uneasy of doing a Bio EE, because of that. What should I do??

Hey guys! This is rather urgent and I'm actually very worried. I was wondering if it was even possible to switch our mentors for EE at this point? Our school had us upload our EE's to the IBS site at the beginning of March, and technically we were supposed to have sent the actual EE for marking to our mentor's mid February via email, but because of a bunch of things (mix of personal and just procrastination, very stupid I know) I only finished by the time we actually had to submit. Because of covid all of our communication is online, and my mentor never responded to my email about marking the EE? (I sent it the same day we submitted). They've taken a week to reply before,…

Hi, I am writing an EE in Language and Literature area 3. I would like to use violence against women and how it is portrayed in the media as my topic but I am not sure if it is a solid topic. My draft question is How is violence against women portrayed in media today? I would like to look at newspaper excerpts from the Sarah Evrard case and others, while also looking at some books, possibly The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy? I would appreciate any advice on my topic or any notes!

Hi, I'm starting with my EE in physics but I don't really know if my topic is a good topic. I don't know how to focuse it in physics. I want to do something between the strings of a Tennis racket and how can it improve the COR of the ball. Maybe i can check the relation between tension or the number of strings in the collision in the COR. I really don't know were to start. Because we are in lockdown i thought about doing the experiment in Finite Element modelling. But i don't know if the IB allow that. I got not to much info in internet neither good bibliography. My advisor said me that the topic is not important if it's not enough bibliography, i…

Hi everybody! So I have been struggling a little bit in figuring out what my EE research question should be as I feel like there is not enough information on my specific topic and was wondering if anybody could help? My topic is about the relation between Franco & Hitler, and more specifically how the meeting of Hendaye affected Spain not joining WW2. I have been doing research but I feel like there is not enough information about this specific event and was thus wondering if there is another topic related to this that might seem interesting? And if any of you could help with my research question then that would be great! Side note: I am Catalan myself…

Hi I was wondering if anyone is doing or did an ITGS extended essay? I'm currently doing ITGS for my EE, but because the course is very broad, it is very difficult to find what content is appropriate or not. Our ITGS teacher told us that ITGS can be taught by English teachers or Math teachers, so I'm somewhat afraid that they will not be able to understand IT terminology if it is too complicated, or a certain IT concept. After all, we can't expect teachers to be very fluent with concepts such as Web 2.0 for example. Anyone have any suggestions or tips? You don't have to be in ITGS or do the EE to respond, I guess.

Hi so I'm starting my EE soon, and I'm thinking about comparing duplicity in The Sympathizer and Harry Potter (focusing on the main character of The Sympathizer and Snape from Harry Potter). Has anyone read The Sympathizer? If so, would this comparison be a doable one for my extended essay? Any suggestions for me? Anything to help would be great. I know Harry Potter is overdone, so that's why I was thinking of using a more literary book and comparing the two.

Hi. To start, im gonna say thay i do not take IB music since my school doesnt offer it. I have been thinking about doing my EE in music because it would be an idea that I would enjoy a lot. I’m not a professional musician, however I have some experience of playing and knowledge of basic music theory. For those who did their EE in music, does my research question need to be exploring or analyzing a certain genre of music, or a song or two in specific? If so, what songs would be the best choices? As jazz is the most complex and complete genre of music, I thought about doing an analysis of a song, even not being a big jazz fan. I thought about Progressive Rock,…

Recently, I found out that there are some problems with my EE: 1. I missed a few references in my EE, and some references are inconsistent (a mix of footnotes + intext citation) 2. I didn't add my candidate code on the cover page (the school released our code after we submit our final draft on managebac, so I thought the school will open another submission after we get to know our code and add it on the cover page, and that is why I didn't manage to do the referencing in the first place nicely...) Yet, after I have my EE edited, I sent it to my supervisor, but he replies to me that he already submitted my EE to IBO on the system, and he said no more …

I am currently in the "finding topics" portion of my Extended Essay, and I wanted to write about how effective the Electric Vehicle Rebate in California has been in reducing the negative externality associated with driving gasoline-based cars. However, the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project, which gives out these rebates, was formed through the Assembly Bill 118 that was signed in October 2007. Would this be violating the five-year rule mentioned in the Economics EE?

So, for my EE i'm planning to have Biology as my area, I have a few things in mind for the actual question, its along the lines of - developing a cure for autism by using gene therapy. - The stimulation of fetal hemoglobin as a cure for sickle cell anemia. - Assessing behavior to a biological diagnosis and treatment for ADHD. or - How methamphetamine abuse relates to dopamine levels found in the brain of a living organism and how the level of dopamine in a methamphetamine addict could correlate to the abuser developing Parkinsons disease. Which one would get a higher score? And be somewhat easier to write about? And also, how would I write about it? Thanks!

Hello! I have decided to do my EE in English A. I want to investigate the portrayal of women in Literature, and have come up with three questions: - "How are women portrayed in Shakespeare's works and how does this reflect the time period in which it was written?" - The portrayal of women in Literature vs the portrayal in Shakespeare's works. (I have to come up with a question.) - The portrayal of women in different books aka a comparison. (Yet to come up with a question.) Which do you think is the best? Are they too broad/narrow or not research based enough to be approved? Any specific advice? I would appreciate any comment. Thank you very …

Hi, I'm pretty much just asking for some reassurance or maybe a reality check honestly I don't know. But, here's my situation: I've been planning and piecing together my biology EE and I'm pretty confident about it, but as time goes by I'm becoming more and more worried about it. So, I did some additional research on biology EEs and now I may just lose my mind. I guess what I want to know is, am I really nearly-guaranteed an unsuccessful grade for my EE because it's based on secondary research? Like, topic aside and all, will the lack of experiment-based investigation I perform directly influence the performance of my EE. Thanks to anyone who might have an…

Hi! I wanted to do an econs EE at first but I only take it at SL level so I decided to add the chemistry part to it. Is this topic too vague and unclear? The chemistry part of it will be the components of the fake goods such as in makeup, bag, etc and how it is made to look the same. I am also not sure if it fits under any world studies topic. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

Hi! I'm planning on doing my extended essay on Macbeth. I would prefer to do it on gender roles but I've heard thats over done so I was going to focus on the supernatural. Could you please give me some ideas on what to talk about, I have thought about possibly discussing whether what happened to Macbeth was 'destiny' or manipulation. I'm also really interested in Lady Macbeth but I don't know if I could write an essay just about her (maybe talk about her character development). Also, I have just done GCSEs and our essays always had to include what Shakespeare was trying to teach his audience, can I write about that in my EE as well? Thanks in advance

Advices online and examples online all seems to have a purely theoretical topic, but my tutor seems to think that relating it to a real life situation, or starting with a real life situation will get me better marks (I think that he think this because of the only A he got is one that relates to real life situation). I don't know if starting with a real life situation would water down the philosophical focus, please any advice?

I chose bootstrapping in stats as my research topic and I've already done a bunch of research. Bootstrapping requires computer software to run, and so I'd been planning to use Python and some libraries to create a confidence interval. But when I checked the IB EE guide (https://www.shaker.org/downloads/ibextendedessayguide2018.pdf), I saw "Computer programs may only be included (in particular circumstances) in computer science and physics essays." I'm not sure what to do. My topic is quite clearly math, and I'm not sure I can switch it. Are there any exceptions to this rule about computer programs?

Hi everyone, I've narrowed down my EE question to something that interests me and I think I can write about but I'm not sure what subject the question best falls under. My question is, "How can we account for the inaccuracy of eyewitness testimony in multiple cases throughout history?" My English teacher said it could be history or psychology, and told me to choose. Does anyone have any tips for how I might do this? Personally, I want my essay to be psychology related but I don't know if that's the right choice. Any advice? Or what do you guys think? Thanks.

Hello Guys, this is my first post here. It's a very nice community to have. I need help on my EE specific topic from the general topic of the side effects of gaming. My first research question, which was destined to be rejected the first moment I decided, was: To what extent are the researches about violence caused by gaming true? The teacher said that I can use "To what extent does gaming cause violence" To which I modified it to, "To what extent do violent video games cause violence" And then, again the teacher said: that I need to rephrase it to a better question. But then, she sent me links showing the "GOOD" side of gaming, about how it can save the world, and stuff,…
