Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

Hello, My name is Taha, I'm 17 years old, and currently in 12th grade. I'm looking for someone to help me with my Extended Essay. I've decided to focus my essay on quantum locking: including superconductors (YBCO), the Meissner Effect. I have access to the materials needed to experiment with this topic (materials from quantumlevitation.com). Some ideas I had in mind was to discuss the Meissner Effect in superconductors when cooled down to a critical temperature with liquid nitrogen. I was inspired to this topic when watching a talk on TED.com about quantum locking and quantum levitation (video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXHczjOg06w) This aim of th…

Is trying to isolate an antibiotic producer from a local soil sample and then testing its effectiveness on a nonpathogenic bacteria a good EE idea? Or instead of testing it drying to identitify using various tests? Is it strong enough to write an EE on? Also does this fit into the IB ethic guidelines?

Hi guys, I have a research topic that I am really interested in and I have started the whole EE process early and have been doing some research for about a month now (outside of school). We have to know our specific question in like a week and I have one, I just want to see what you guys think of it. I want to do a cost versus benefit analysis on the economic and environmental effects of nickel mining in Indonesia. Here is my question for my topic: Are the economic benefits of nickel mining in Indonesia worth the environmental costs? I have some questions about it that I'd love to hear your opinions on: 1. Hi, I am a Nov 21 student and have a question about my EE RQ. I have choosen to do a biology EE, where I look at and measure : Concentration of glucose succeeding fermentation of the steeping liquid obtained through the soaking of common horse hard feeds. I would then compare to recommend daily intakes for horses and link it to the Equine Metabolic Syndrome. I am struggling to form a sufficient RQ and cant seem to get hold of my supervisor. I was thinks of: “To investigate the concentration of glucose succeeding fermentation of the steeping liquid obtained through the soaking of common horse hard feeds.” Is this not direct enough? Hi! I am a first year IB student writing my extended essay. I had some trouble deciding what topic I wanted to write about, however I think I might have one now. It is about the role of sleep on the consolidation of memories. I'm worried that it might be too broad, I might change it to the role of dreaming on memories, but I was researching and pretty much everywhere I looked it said that there isn't any strong enough explanation for why we dream. Now I'm just confused and I'm not sure what to do. I made a few research questions to try and see if I could lead me too something, but now i'm stuck and the deadline for the RQ is soon. To what extent does prolong…

ok so I am slightly worrying right now because I have an idea for a bio ee but have no clue how to approach it. My idea is to determine the efficiency of different sanitization techniques, kind of like developing a bacteria culture and exposing it to some sanitizing agents like bleach to see the results, but i am clueless on how to phrase it and on what exactly I am supposed to be analyzing and comparing. Anyone have any ideas to help?

Hello, so I have come up with my idea for an Extended Essay, and have gotten it approved. (Yay!) So after researching and coming up with the basic bulk of what I am going to do to research it, e.g. Methods of Experiments, Chemical and Equipment forms, the general gist of what I plan to do in the coming month for the practicals, I am left stumped as to exactly how to phrase my EE Question. I have given it some thought, but overall the question itself seems far too vague. It is (Currently): Which method of measuring the alcoholic content of alcoholic drinks would be the best, under a number of categories? Although I plan to introduce these categories in the introduction, sh…

Hey everybody, I was looking at the Film EE subject guide and while I thought that analyzing a couple films to write about cultural impact was interesting, I was wondering if the same technique could be applied to other artistic mediums, specifically video games. Analyzing several games and talking about their cultural significance in internet subcultures or just the wider artistic themes they represent is something that I would be passionate about, but unfortunately the IBO does not have video games as a subject area the same way they have film or visual arts. When I talked to my school's IB coordinator about this they recommended I take a look at the World studies …

Hi! I am in IBDP Y1 and we have to write our EE. I have chosen to write my EE in Psychology. I just want to know if my topic is good or not. I want to explore the concept of tyranny, going in depth about why people perform “evil” actions -- that is, why do people hurt others or take advantage of other people. Here, I will be comparing the banality of evil thesis by Hannah Arendt, which claims that ordinary people commit atrocities without awareness, care, or choice; with the theory that perpetrators act thoughtfully, creatively, and with conviction. They are influenced by groups and are transformed because of that. Is this a good topic to go ahead wi…

i have just started with my extended essay and I am planning to process it on economics. But I found something i think should improve while we do the extended essay, I believe that we are the people who will run the upcoming world,so rather than writing our veiws on the current situation and repeating something that will actually be of no use and write about things we think should or will happen in future. Yes will will be controversial but thats what we need in our lives today. we need several topics and ideas so we come up with one of the best.just like i want to work on something related to the future of retail outlet (not petrol or diesel in particular) that even if…

I've picked Biology as my EE research topic, I want to mainly focus in the areas of tissue engineering/biomedical engineering. I know if I do these topics, my question needs to emphasize the biological aspect of said topic, however, I am having a difficult time creating a research question. BME and tissue engineering is something I have a passion for, however I still am having difficulty, are there any resources out there that can help point me in the right direction? Or is there somewhere I can read a previous EE that also discussed these topics? Thank you for the help.

Hello, I was searching in the internet for some EE examples or ideas, and I found this nice forum, I hope I get some ideas in here. First of all I decided to produce my EE on Mathematics. This might surprise you but that means that I am the second student ever making an EE in mathematics in my school, no one wants to do it. I read the extended essay in mathematics that the other student produced, and it was about statistics, theme for which I hold no particular interest. I am in Higher Level mathematics, and was thinking to produce an extended essay on Chaos Theory, but I really cant think of an idea on how to approach it. It would be nice if I get some feedback from you…

Hi! I’m currently searching for some topics for language B (in my case, English B HL) extended essay. And I thought I found my one: doing a cat.2 (probably) about the musical Hamilton, which is my favourite musical ever. For analysis, I though about songs Alexander Hamilton, My Shot and Who lives, Who Dies , Who Tells Your Story. As far as I’m concerned, the last song I mentioned is clean, but in Alexander Hamilton the words such as b*stard and w*ore are used, and in My Shot sh*t. Is there any rule that there can be no swearings in the language B extended essay? I seriously love the topic and the whole concept of censorship scares me. Please, I’d appreciate any help,…

I was reading the EE guidelines for a paper in psychology and it indicated that i should not do my essay under the psychology field if i did not take psychology as a part of the Diploma Programme. My school does not offer psychology as a part of the Diploma Programme; however, i took AP psychology last year and did exceptionally well both in the course and on the test, so i am very familiar with psychology. Hi guys! I've drafted my research question but I can't decide between which one I should go with. The topics are the same but just rephrased differently. Is it too broad? Can it be answered in 4,000 words? Should I only focus on one psychosocial intervention (I'm afraid that I will not have enough to write about if I just focus on one)? Should I do adults and elderly patients? Q1: How can brief and long-term psychosocial interventions focused one on one improve quality of life in mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing in adult and elderly patients receiving palliative care? Q2: How can cognitive behaviour therapy and humanistic therapies improve quality of …

Hi! I'm doing an Extended essay on English Language and Literature, focusing on Agatha Christie and her novel And Then There Were None. I'm especially fascinated by the subgenre in which this book falls into, the locked-room mystery/impossible crime. I want to look into how choices made within the story and choices made by Agatha as she wrote the book contributed to developing an impossible crime. (Eg. Character interactions/how they viewed one another, and literary devices Christie employed respectively. Hopefully this makes sense.) My Math IA is currently on whether population density affects the ridership of public transportation in the US. I have been researching topics for a while now and have come up with an idea that I like. My idea is to investigate the effect of the angle of attack of a frisbee on its trajectory/displacement. The topic would include investigating how lift is generated, how torque comes into play, the temperature and pressure of that air. I have seen a few extended essay exemplars and their topics seem much more complicated and advanced. Do you think my idea is suitable for an EE?

Hi, I'm struggling with choosing my IB extended essay topic between philosophy and english literature. I take the high level course for both subjects. I'm relatively more interested in both subjects, but I'm worried by the statistics found online that state that having an insufficient grade for a humanity subject extended essay is much more likely than doing an extended essay for literature. I'm looking for some advice or pros and cons of choosing each, but I am not interested in advice about choosing my topic of interest over another topic because that is the most common advice I have seen online, and isn't really helpful. Thanks!

I am confused if this is the same, comparing and contrasting character analysis and development from two different books. The fiction books I will be using are Eragon and The Novice, and I will be going through the first book of the series. I was thinking that first, I would analyze how both characters are being developed through their obstacles and how they react to them. Then I would analyze different factors that are involved with these characters like their goals and influences and compare the who main characters of their respective stories. Any idea if this is a plausible EE?
