I'm currently working on my ToK presentation. For my KQ, I am exploring the nature of causation and correlation, with my question being 'How can we know whether X is an active agent in causing Y?' Essentially I'm dealing with the nature of proving causal links from correlations, and whether those conclusions may be more or less valid in the human and natural sciences. For my RLS I had initially chosen gun control legislation and whether that would affect homicide rates, and was also interested in talking about violence in videogames and how that has been linked with violence in real life. However, beyond that I'm struggling to come up with development on how to include d…

HEY GUYS! I just chose my TOK essay topic which is '"The knower's perspective is essential in the pursuit of knowledge." To what extent do you agree with this statement?'. As I outlined my essey, I've decided to write about factors such as cognition, experiance, culture and quest for knowledge itself. Do you have any other ideas what should be mentioned in such essay? Maybe some helpful exmaples? btw. I totally do agree with this statemnt, yet my chaotic mind doesn't let me support it in approperiately logical way Peace yo!

Hi. I am currently working on my TOK essay. I chose the first title, "In gaining knowledge, each area of knowledge uses a network of ways of knowing.†Discuss this statement with reference to two areas of knowledge." I am not sure about the phrase "gaining knowledge". Does it mean personal knowledge or universal knowledge? Can I talk about both?

Hey guys! I've seen YouTube videos of sample presentations, most of which are basically just screens of their presentations with their voice recorded. Is it possible to do this for the May 2016 batch? In my school everyone does it by standing in front of a projector and recording it themselves. Just curious as to whether we're allowed to just record the screen of our laptops using a software and talk over the presentation? Need a response ASAP as my presentation is due in 2 days, thanks!

I'm in grade 11 and the school year began on September the 8th. This Friday I have a ToK talk in lunch and "all Grade 11 IB DP students are expected to attend". Well I'm not going to attend. Cause usually all the talks at our school are just so stupid and a waste of time and also extremely basic and boring. In Grade 9 for example, we had this 60-year-old teacher explaining to us how to use online databases, stuff like how to use the search bar. So I'm just afraid the ToK talks are going to be similar, just pointless and boring. The lunch is 75 minutes long and that's a lot of time which I can use for stuff like doing my IB French devoirs and studying for the SAT and ACT.

We have TOK homeworks every week, which are usually about 600 word essays. Our teacher rates them on a scale 0-3 stars, however she doesn't comment or tell us what we did right/wrong. 0 = absolutely worthless nothing garbage, nearly impossible to get. 1 = something is done, but is off topic and doesn't answer questions, 2 = the questions are understood and covered, 3 = the questions are basically answered very precisely and there is no off topic rambling. Here's an image of the homework Here's the homework. Knowledge claims Susie said 12 + 7 was billion, surely she is wrong! But how can we know that? How is our claim that 12 + 7 equals 19 any more reliab…

The prompt for my ToK essay is "To what extent is science and another area of knowledge defined by their methodologies rather than their content?" The question i've drawn from that is "To what extent does methodology define knowledge?" Does this sound ok? Does it seem like a reasonable question? Thanks in advance

Need to formulate my presentation but have not been paying attention in ToK for most of the year. Would appreciate some tips on how to develop questions and would also like to get some view from people on my knowledge question. My main knowledge question is: "How does history play a role in the perception of politics?" Real life situation: similarities being drawn by media of Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler. Thanks!

Hey, okay so we had our last TOK class for before the holidays last week, and we were told that we needed to write the speech for next term. Cool. I have no idea what to do. I am pretty okay with finding a topic as I could just go to a news website and pick a thing that is interesting and make a knowledge question, right? But what I need to know most is what I am actually supposed to do. It is difficult as at my school we only have one TOK class a week, and in this time we mostly just look at paintings and things and analyse them or something, which is helpful but we haven't exactly gone over anything we need to do speech wise.... So it would be absolutely fab if so…

Research question: Is it true that sense perception lets imagination flow and affects the perception of reality in the moment of knowing? Our situation is when a little kid watches a scary movie and at night he thinks theres a monster under his bed. How can we make a good approach to this and what can make this question effective? Other examples too?

Hello all. So the tok deadline is coming up soon and i dont feel very confident about mu essay. I am happy in terms of it getting a C or B but what do examiners look for usually? I am just trying to grab that one or possibly 2 extra mark. My question is: Is explanation a prerequisite of prediction? My aoks are human sciences (economics +psychology) and religion (christianity). Do you guys have any tips to get it in that top band, i would be really thankful (i asked my teacher the same and he is too overloaded to properly focus on my solely, so im turning to you guys!) thanks

HEY all, As its time to start planing for my TOK presentation, so I thought I will do it on "Black Money". As an economic student i can easily explain the content. As far as my teacher told me i should include at-least two Ways of knowing and two areas of knowledge which i will be able to make up. But the only problem i'm facing now is framing a TOK topic for my presentation, so far i came up with "What is the root cause for black money?". I basically want to speak about the root cause of black money and government's role in it. And what people think about paying tax (psychological factor). So if someone could help me frame a proper TOK TOPIC it'll be very helpful t…

Hey y'all For my TOK essay we are supposed to come up with a Knowledge Question on our own and write an essay on it. I chose a topic on the common assumption of how video games tend to influence violent behavior in teenagers. However I am having trouble structuring this topic into a question and this is what I currently have so far: "To what extent do video games show evidence in influencing violent behavior in teenagers?" The area of knowledge I will be looking at is ethics and the ways of knowing will be perception, reason, emotion and language. Thanks

Hello: I want to know the following.. My school had an internal deadline for handing in the final draft of the TOK essay for November 2015 examination.. It was July 31... They told us to send it and then upload it.. I did my TOK esasy basically on my own, used APA system to quotate, etc.. The problem is when I was going to upload it I corrected some sentences to improve the tideness of the essay. I uploaded 15 days ago approximately. Today my IB coordinator told me that my TOK teacher rejected my essay because it is not the same... Is she on her power to do this? Or is her work only to probe that there is not plagarism? However I will upload the original essay, but if any…

So for my mini presentation in history, I used for my real life example of christopher columbus being taught as a hero in american schools when in reality he was not. My knowledge question is, how do you know that the language used in history is reliable or not. So for my claim I am looking at ways of knowing to judge and I used reason for it. However I am having trouble thinking of counterclaims. Does anyone have any ideas for counter claims?

Hi! I recently started the IB (last week), and I am currently trying to do my first TOK homework. But I do not understand. It is to write down 10 things I know to be true. And then I have to tell why I know that it is true, or what makes me believe that it's the truth. Here's what our teacher wrote: "Go over the list of 'things I know' that you made in class and note down how you know them. Consider 'know' in the real sense of the word....as in 'having knowledge of......' Not simply know in the everyday sense. You will have to consider this carefully .........there may be no 'proof' but there need be well thought out backups to your statements." I worte the following st…

So I've chosen to do my TOK presentation on the war on drugs. For my real life situation I chose this article. For the lazy: it's about how a cop tricked an autistic boy into selling him marijuana by posing as a friend. However, the said boy has been prove innocent etc. Is this still a viable real life situation? if yes, then can I relate it to how the war on drugs has failed? also how can I include the fact that portugal has decriminalised all drugs and is doing fine? Also, I read about how a real life situation should have multiple perspectives to be viewed from. This rls seems pretty one sided. Thanks in advance for the help. Appreciate it. The North Remember…

When we do our presentations, how do they mark us if we work in a group? For example if i present with another individual, when they mark me, do they look at only what I said or does the other individual's presenting affect my grade? And also, because more than one person creates the presentation, do they mark it harsher if you do it in a group rather than alone? Thanks!
