Hi guys, I'm writing a TOK oral atm (we're doing practice ones at our school) and my group's topic is can we define universal beauty for women, (the physical appearance of women - our kq may need some rephrasing). In my group I am primarily focusing on beauty throughout history, and in different cultures. I was just wondering how many subsidiary/secondary questions I should bring up in my section (which is roughly 7 mins). some ones i was thinking of are - has our notion of beauty always been the same - why might different cultures define beauty differently - is the media responsible for modelling our perception of beauty today Also open to …

Any one help me please. I got 6/10 in TOK presentation. But I got 3/10 in my essay. Overall I got 12/30 and got C. I would like to remark TOK. To my understanding, presentation can't be remark. Only essay can be remark. I also understand grade can be up or down after remark. The most worst case is I get 0 in essay after remark, then I get 6/30 and get D. Since my EE is A. So overall A(EE) + D in TOK is still 2 marks. Am I correct?

I am planning on doing my TOK essay around Physician-Patient Privilege and would like to understand if this is practiced anywhere else around the world. What is it? Medical confidentiality where any communication between a physician and patient is protected against use in court. (Even if a person confesses to a psychiatrist that he/she kill someone, the psychiatrist cannot tell this to local authorities without the patient's consent.) If there's something similar in your country, please state what it is and how it works in your country. Thanks!

Hey guys, Over the summer we were asked to come up with our TOK presentation which we will be giving once we go back to school. I have formulated some questions but I am still a little lost over which one I should choose. Here are the one's that I have shortlisted: 1. How is knowledge throughout history constructed? 2. What is the role of emotion in the construction of knowledge throughout history? 3. What is the role of authoritative figures in the construction of knowledge throughout history? 4. How does authority construct knowledge? I was thinking of using the first question as I feel that it is broad enough for me to explore. The othe…

I have many assignments due in a short amount of time and I don't want to spend too much energy on TOK essay. I just want an overall 7 for TOK and I will be satisified with that. So how many marks do i have to get in the essay if I want a 7 overall with the precondition that I got a 10 in the presentation? Thank you!

Hello there! I'm currently struggling with the tok essay , i chose the 5th prescribed tittle 'the best explanation is the simplest explanation' .since it is necessary for the maximum grade to have ''a sustained focus on knowledge questions connected to the prescribed title—developed with investigation of different perspectives and linked effectively to areas of knowledge and/or ways of knowing.'' this is not clear enough since i read reports about the tok essay that said many students didnt use knowledge questions properly , plus we dont have anyone that can help us with tok in the highschool ,if you know how to use them in the essay could you explain them plea…

I have a simple question, If I got an 8/10 in the TOK presentation, is it possible that I get an A in TOK. I really want to achieve three points, but I only got a B in the presentation. In the new grade boundaries, only if you get an A in TOK and an A in the EE, then you get three points

Hey all, I was hoping someone could enlighten me regarding the correct way of structuring a ToK presentation. So my real life situation is a theft where the victim blames the misfortune on black magic (superstition) My KQ is: How reliable are faith(superstition) and emotion as sources of knowledge/ways of knowing. I was wondering if this is too generic? Also I am in a group of three so I guessed it would be good to have a broad perspective. Basically it goes like this: Why is faith 'bad' (believing without evidence, dogmatism) Why is emotion 'bad' (obscures judgement, confirmation bias) Why is reason better (scie…

So my TOK Presentation is this week and I've been working on it over the weekend but when I asked my teacher if what I've got so far was ok, he told me to change the focus slightly so that it would be more ToK. I don't want to be disrespecting his authority and experience but I suppose I don't really know how to make something more ToK. My RLS: US 2016 Presidential Elections - focus on difference in voters' perspectives on who would be the 'right' decision My current KQ: Can you ever know if a knowledge claim is wrong before making conclusions? Here's my structure so far: Introduce the RLS + KQ Define when a knowledge claim is wrong Illustra…

I'm required to do a TOK presentation simulating the real life TOK Presentation. However, I'm still confused on how to make the flow of the slides and how it should be done with what kind of sources. I did clarify with my teacher and friends but I'm still having doubts. My current understanding is to find a Real Life Situation (RLS) and craft a Knowledge Question (KQ) which I did already and checked with my teacher. And what I understood on what to do next is to find other RLS to support and counterclaim and answer the KQ eventually with these claims. And I know I also gotta explain how I craft my KQ. I'm still not sure if I got this right, if so or not, can you…

Hey guys, I recently did my TOK presentation and I didn't get a good grade on it hence I would be re-doing it. I've decided to do my TOK presentation about whitewashing/authorities using their power to manipulate knowledge. There are many instances of this which I've learnt in history (eg: Sharpeville Massacre, Amritsar Massacre, manipulation of information in USSR). It made me question if the knowledge gotten from history can be deemed valid/true. Some questions I've come up with include: 1. How much evidence is needed to validate knowledge gained from history? 2. Under what circumstance is the manipulation of shared knowledge by authorities justified? 3…

Our TOK teacher told us that we need to explore at-least 2 KQs in an essay. So how do you get multiple KQs so that you do not deviate from the prescribed topic. I was thinking of having a central KQ ,and then also having a supporting KQ about personal and shared knowledge. However, how can I include personal and shared KQ for any topic? And if not, how can I have another KQ?

Hi guys! So For my TOK presentation I am doing the corruption of the South African president and how regardless of the prior corruption done the people still voted from him even though the news about the corruption went viral and was known to all. We are struggling a bit on how to narrow down our situation and KQ as the ones we had were shut down immediately. Our AOK are Ethics and Politics and WOK are Reason and Intuition. The KQ that we have is Abuse of power leads to the questioning of exercising of power/authority. Any help or advice given would be greatly appreciated! Huge thanks in advance.

I've been working on my knowledge question for my tok presentation, but I'm still uncertain on whether or not this would be suitable as a KQ. My topic is on GMOs, it's about the Cavendish Banana going extinct and how scientists are trying to find ways to maintain them. My KQ is: To what extent should ethical implications be considered in experiments that are carried throughout the natural sciences? Can someone give me feedback on this? Is there any way I can improve it? Or is it good enough to be a KQ? thanks!!!!!!!

Hello, so I was told that IB will be giving us titles for our TOK essay. Now my question is, do we write an essay ON one of the given titles that we choose, or do we make our own Knowledge Question out of the given essay titles, and write an essay on that? I am currently doing a mock essay and am very confused on how to start? I am looking at the 2017 titles, so do I write an essay on one of the 2017 titles that I want to choose, or do I make my own KQ out of the prescribed title that I choose? Thanks in advance

So... TOK... We were told that we have to start thinking about our TOK presentations. And, to be honest, I'm lost. I don't know where to start from (It's because our school doesn't support us that much, we don't receive a lot of help from teachers, so basically we are lost, I don't know what to do...) So, to start with, what is this? hahaha, it sound like a stupid question, but I really don't know what are we supposed to do in a TOK presentation. I already have a group for the presentation, now what. How many areas of knowledge do we have to choose? How long does it have to be? How many ways of knowing do we have to talk about? How do we make…

Hello there, I am currently working on my ToK presentation for my Economics real life situation. We had a class discussion about the pound collapsing in 5 years, because all companies would move to Europe due to rising interest rates in the UK (Due to brexit). From that RLS I have come up with the following knowledge question: What role does reason and interpretation play when creating future claims? My ways of knowing would be: reason Area of knowing: Ethics, Human Sciences In terms of Ethics, I have thought about how errors in reasoning make a claim invalid. I will delete this post once it's answered Is this OK for my main KQ? Is our perception of the world affected by the various types of knowledge around us? RLS: why people are scared of flying in planes eventhough stats show the probability of being in one is very low + plane crashes over the years has been decreasing WOK: intuition, emotions, imagination (touched on language) AOK: maths, (touched on human sciences and the arts) I talk about how movies (the arts), the news (hyperbolic and constant coverage on plane crashes), make us think plane crashes are very common. Hi, I am just discovering this forum and thought it may be a good place to ask a question I had. I am graduating June 2018, and my ToK teacher is just introducing the presentation to us. She mentioned during her introduction of the presentation that she really recommends that people work in groups of up to three, even though the requirement allows either that or individual presentations. She said that she would be very hesitant to approve individual presentations as she did not feel it matched the type of project that this is, however, in this wording of her feelings about individual presentations, she left a very small indication that she would very rarely allow it. I am…

I have used a couple of AOKs (and have explored a few more to show how conclusion fits to other RLSs). But I cannot seem to fit any WOKs in because my persepctives do not direct me to any. So can I just explore the different perspectives from different AOKs only. Or do I have to have WOKs also??
