HI y'all I would appreciate some pointers on the Theory of Knowledge presentation. I don't really understand how you can formulate a second order knowledge question from a real-life situation or even what a second order knowledge question is. I believe a knowledge question is just a question about knowledge so would a second order knowledge question be a question about a question about knowledge? Very confused. Any help would be much appreciated and accepted. Thanks, Crash «MemeReviewer» Bandicoot

Please help me write a ToK presentation question. I was planning on talking about capital punishment and how emotions drive our decisions over laws. My idea was "How do emotions influence the creation of laws" But I know that "creation of laws" is too specific. My teacher said the rule of thumb is that you shouldn't be able to tell what the topic is based on the question. I can't think of anything.

Hello guys (and girls), I am about to start my first Theory of Knowledge class very soon. I am both very excited and nervous about this because I have never done something similar to Theory of Knowledge in my academic career. Although I often score high marks such as A-'s and low 7's, I am unsure on whether or not I will be able to achieve an equally outstanding grade in Theory of Knowledge and would like to ask anyone who has completed the Theory of Knowledge course for any tips on doing well. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Crash «MemeReviewer» Bandicoot

I have decided to do my TOK Oral Presentation on Animal Agriculture, or more specifically, Animal Agriculture and Ethics. My knowledge question is: To what extent can we morally justify negative features of our society, such as animal agriculture, after testing it against our ethics and ways of knowledge, including emotions and intuition? However, my teacher is unhappy with my real life situation. She says that I can't use an article about the horrible conditions of factory farms as a real life situation, because it's general, and factual. It needs to be about something that someone has done, or a specific event. I need to find a real life si…

Dear IB Survival, I'd like to do a TOK presentation about the Torture at Abu Ghraib and I'm trying to find an overall knowledge claim to fit with it. I want to focus on who is to blame, where does the responsibility lie when no one said anything? It's based on the bystander effect and the human sciences in general. I have no clue how to structure this as a knowledge claim... please help

Hi, for my TOK presentastion, the knowledge issue is the following: "To what extent should we trust knowledge from authority? I've gathered arguments, but I had a question for one of the argument within the natural sciences. My argument states that using reason, we can reason outselves to the fact that doctors, dentists and so on are trustworthy, because they have a certificate, years of experience, you're still alive.... Will this be inductive reasoning? Thank you in advance

I have my tok presentation in 2-3 days and I am still unsure of the structure I should be using and if my KQ is even a good KQ?? My KQ is: To what extent does culture influence beauty ideals? My real life situation is the Kayan people of Myanmar who wear rings around their necks. This is what some others have recommended for structure: 1. real life situation 2. derive KQ 3. AOKS 4. perspectives 5. biases 6. WOKS 7. JOKS 8. subsidiary questions 9. reflection I am confused about what I apply my AOKS, WOKS, JOKS, and Perspectives to. Do I apply them to all three KQs or just my main one? Do I need to make any cl…

So I just realised that the tok essay has global marking, which means examiners just read it and give you a general intuitive score of what they 'feel' it deserves. This seems so subjective, how are you meant to know what's expected and what kind of mark you think the examiner'll give you if there's no rubrik?? isnt tok all about how woks like intuition are flawed??

I have my real life situation as well as my knowledge question, I'm just unsure of what I'm supposed to do next? I'm first year IB, and our TOK teacher hasn't exactly taught us much this year. At my school we traditionally don't do our presentations until the beginning of our second year, with a different (and much better) TOK teacher, however our first year teacher is making us do them now. Could someone please help me by clarifying the process and what would come next for me in the presentation? Do I just have to talk about my question and real life situation? am I supposed to talk about how the real life situation has affected me? I have no idea what to do …

My partner and I are in the early process of developing an idea and the one that we agree is interesting is Utopia and why it is something we strive for and yet can never have due to human nature. However, the more we develop the topic, the harder it seems to be which is what I would like some guidance on. I feel that the subject can be too one-sided or too much a closed question; possibly I am asking the wrong questions. To start with a Real Life Example is also difficult as many of the best examples of failed Utopian attempts are not very well known and would not be discussion friendly for our audience. I don't want to have to do a ton of research also for this sa…

My TOK presentation is tomorrow. My partner and I want to focus on the different perceptions of body art, such as tattoos, body piercings and hair being dyed. This is a controversial issue among different religions and cultures. Today, some people are rejected from getting a job once they show up in a job interview with arm tattoos. Others are simply asked to conceal them during work hours, but is this a suppression of self-expression? Our Knowledge Question would be: How does perception help shape our values of art? HOWEVER, according to our TOK teacher, this idea does not go under the AOK Art, since “art is permanent, tattoos are not….” So i…

So I am having this mock ToK presentation during my Pre-IB year. My teacher has approved it but now i am stuck in spring break not knowing how to correctly approach this. I am not sure how i can relate the ways of knowing to my kq, but then again, do i have to bring in the ways of knowing into this? if so, how do you think i should do this? thanks a lot

I am an IB student in the final year. Near the end of the previous year, we did our TOK presentation. I worked very hard for it and did (I believe) extremely well, and all classmates who witnessed it agreed. My TOK teacher strongly dislikes fast talkers, and I am one. I also did the presentation individually, so I only had 10 minutes to fit in my information, all of which was important and necessary. I ended up getting an 8/10 where many people in my class got a 10 who felt they did not deserve one. I believe that my teacher had an unfair bias against me and marked me far lower than I deserved. I heard recently that it is possible to send assignments to IB moderators on…

Hey guys, I'm in a dilemma right now. My KQ is Should art be free of ownership? and my RLS is the 500,000 pirated copies of Kanye's new album and how he lost about 10 million dollars. Basically I kind of want to talk about the different perceptions between the artist vs the consumer in a way to include emotion and reasoning. Also, after the artist distributed the music who owns it? However, I find it challenging to connect the RLS with the KQ. I'm not sure if this is strong enough or if I should just change the RLS entirely or change my KQ. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Okay, so I read an interesting article regarding human nature. It discusses the whole good vs evil debate. the main focus of it was about whether we as human beings can prevent future genocide? I think this raises an interesting question of: how we can better our understanding of human nature? And to what extent we can understand human nature when it comes to wars? These are the questions I was able to come up with when reading this article.. however I'm still unsure about what to use for my RLS. Should I talk about previous wars? or can I use this pychologists arguments/views as my RLS? Would that actually be possible?(basically this …

Hey guys, so here's the situation. My teacher uploaded the TOK files yesterday, but I just realized that I wrote the school and candidate session number wrongly. Instead of writing 002595 as school number, I missed out one zero and wrote 02595. Also, instead of writing the full candidate session number, I only wrote the last four digits of my candidate number which is 0002. I'm really panicking, will they mark my paper? Other than this issue, everything's fine. My name, school name, etc. Even my TOK Essay itself has my correct candidate number. Thanks.

Hello! My friends and I are wondering if we should include the prescribed title at the top of the essay or not? We have heard that we shouldn't include any information at all, only the essay but our teacher said to one of my friends that the title shouldn't be on the essay while another one was told it should be. I was just wondering what other people have been told? I don't believe it should affect the grading at all because we fill out a cover sheet where we state which title we picked and the word count, but if it does affect the grading I just wanted to know. Thanks in advance C:

My RLS is about an AI that taught itself an ancient Chinese game and managed to beat the Champion of that game five times. I am working with two other people for my TOK Presentation, and our topic will be discussing the impact of video games on humans. Our main knowledge question we've come up with is: "How do video games influence human behavior and human interactions?" However, we felt like this wasn't a knowledge question, but rather just a "normal" question that is too narrow in scope. Any suggestions of how to broaden this question to make it an adequate knowledge question for the ToK presentation, which is next Monday for my group? I am doing prescribed title number 1, and I was told that it was not necessary to include knowledge questions as it stated in the subject report that knowledge questions often distract candidates in answering the prescribed title. So, my question is are candidates obliged to make knowledge questions that are related to the title? Or could the title be directly addressed without raising any knowledge questions without being punished? I am aware that the criteria says "a sustained focus on knowledge questions connected to the prescribed title and are well chosen for the Excellent band, however, would candidates be punished without asking any questions? Thanks.

So, we have finished our presentation in the month of November. One week ago, our teacher informed my friend and me that our presentation even though one of the bests has to be awarded with lower points because my friend was reading the presentation from the slides. Even though I did not read the presentation, because in the same group have to be awarded with same points. I would like to know, if there really is any regulation that suggest lowering the points because of reading. I went through the guide and nothing was said that this kind of presentation should be awarded with zero points. Thank you!

So in the rubrik for the TOK presentation, I got all my ticks in (and 2 in between) the 9-10 column but I think I got an 8. Is it normal for that to happen or is it weird I didn't get a 9 with all the ticks in that section? Also, do the moderators look at these ticks or does that not get sent? So I was wondering if TOK presentation grades often get moderated up? Or do they usually only get moderated down? Thanks!

I'm doing question 2 in the prescribed titles. It states that "knowledge within a discipline develops according to the principles of natural selection." How useful is this metaphor? And the two areas of knowledge I'm gonna look at are the natural sciences and religious knowledge. I wrote a thesis statement in my intro. So I was wondering whether my counter claims should be against my thesis statement ? If that makes any sense. Like for example.. If I said that the scientific method follows the principles of natural selection.. Should my counter claim be an example of theories in science that don't follow the principles of natural selection? Or should my counter claim b…

Hi guys - I've been poking around and I haven't been able to find a forum for this but I thought it might be a good idea to have a worldwide discussion about the recently released theory of knowledge titles. Thought this might be a good idea so we can read other people's perspectives and perhaps see other aspects to look at. Let me know if this already exists and I'll take it down :/. “In gaining knowledge, each area of knowledge uses a network of ways of knowing.†Discuss this statement with reference to two areas of Knowledge. “Knowledge within a discipline develops according to the principles of natural selection.†How useful is this metaphor? “The knower’s…

I realized that I have chosen an AOK that I understand very little on for this essay. Even after researching certain perspectives in more depth, I'm not sure how an essay using the AOK of ethics is written, especially one where you have an argument to evaluate on like PT 6: "There is always a trade-off between accuracy and simplicity". How can I evaluate ethics if ethics consists of so many perspectives that so often conflict with each other? This is an incredibly elementary question to ask at this point of the course... But if there are so many perspectives, how can you ever claim that any of them is right or wrong or both right and wrong? Even if you go with the classic…

I'm doing question 6 for TOK, which is "In knowledge there is always a trade-off between accuracy and simplicity." Evaluate this statement in relation to two areas of knowledge. So I basically picked natural sciences for one of my areas, because in many of the sciences, scientific knowledge is simplified in order to make it understandable for the average person, and in many cases that means that it loses its accuracy along the way. However, for my second area of knowledge, im torn between religious knowledge or ethics? Which one would be more appropriate for this question? And how so?

Hey! In the ToK essay, do we present the knowledge questions in the form of questions or as claims? A source I read said that KQs should be integrated in claims and the question shouldn't just be explicitly mentioned in the essay, which I find a bit weird. Why shouldn't we be able to pose KQs in the form of questions? Also, how many of them are we supposed to have in the essay?
