We have a thread for law and medicine, but we don't really have a thread for people who want to study engineering in university. In order to keep the majority of the posts about engineering mostly in the same place so that people can find them more easily, I've created this thread to help people out. I'm a second year student in chemical engineering and can help with pretty much any kind of general engineering questions you might have, whether it's what courses to take in the IB, general procedures for applying to universities for engineering, or what to expect in an engineering program once you're there. If you have a school-specific question, such as applying to MIT or …

Good day everyone, Now many people face problems once reaching their senior year. Their whole tiime is occupied by IB work, despite the fact that there are other exams to worry about. Time management is not the major topic here, it's the admission tests. Many have probably heard of the common ones (such as the SATs, BMATs..). Anyway, you will find a list of the most important admission tests in many countries and for different majors. Any additional help is greatly appreciated. Hello to all future Law students, I've been on the forum for a while and I've seen that there are quite a few of you who plan on studying/want to study Law at University. I'm currently a second-year Law student at LSE in the UK and I like to think I have a pretty good idea of what studying Law is about at University and a career beyond. I figured I'd start a thread where all of us can come together and talk about Law, what it actually means to study it, what it's about, what you can expect beyond a vague idea of it being challenging, and such. I'm not saying that I will have all the answers, but I will endeavour to answer as many questions as I can. I'm sure there must be…

There are a lot of people who, even in their second year of IB, are directionless in terms of university applications. This post will aim to give you an insight into applying to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, United Kingdom and the United States. Australia Canada Finland New Zealand Singapore United Kingdom United States Standardised tests English Language tests This is a community project, and if anybody has anything to add please feel free to. The section on Canada is particularly lacking since I don't know a lot about studying there and since we do have a lot of Canadian members (or a Canadian invasion rather), someone could oblige in filling it up? Finland Why on earth would I apply to Finland? The reason, in a nutshell, is that higher education is completely free of charge to everyone - no matter whether you're Finnish, Dutch or South African. How to apply to, and choose, a university The number of English language undergraduate courses is limited, so you won't have too much choice. All universities offer MSc/MA courses in English, but since this site is concentrated on students who are moving from high school to university, I'll concentrate on that. Basically the only university offering undergraduate courses in English is the Helsinki School of Economics (Aalto University from 1.1.2010). HSE is considered the be…

Hello everyone, I was planning on going to Uni in Germany, and in order to do that, IB students have to go to a "Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle" to get their Diploma accepted. My own diploma is not getting accepted because I took an online course (economics SL), and my sister's diploma is not getting accepted because she is taking self-taught German A, as they don't offer German A at our school. This is frustrating, and T just want to make everyone aware that you cannot study in Germany if you take a self-taught course or an online course

Hello I first want to introduce myself since this is my first post on this forum. I am a IB student in Italy and next year I going to be a senior and i am going to take all of my IB exams (ouch), I have HL- English A1, Italian B, History and SL- Biology, Math SL, and Spanish. Ok now that that's done I just want to share my thoughts about the competition to enter the world's best universities. Well first we need to see the admission policy of these schools and here is where the problems begin. Lets say you are a average white American in a IB school and you want to get into Harvard. This is what happens: (Just for the sake of simplicity lets say they Harvard only gets 100 …

Good day everyone, Thought that a thread like this might help around here, taking into consideration the large amounts of IB students around here looking forward to med school. In this thread, you can discuss, ask questions and/or share opinions about application procedures, personal statements and anything regarding going to med school - from the IB of course... Well then, enjoy!! (This post is copied from the same thread on TSR, just to highlight a few things). The Pre-med System (American and some Canadian Universities) Pre-med (as in four year undergraduate study) means that you have to accomplish three things: - You have to have a Bachelor (BS) degree in any fiel…

I accidentally stumbled onto this article: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/e...icle4321718.ece regarding the comparison between the IB (hehe) and the British A levels. Do you think the comparison is fair? 45 IB points = 6.4 A-level A grades 40 IB points = 5.4 A-level A grades 35 IB points = 4.5 A-level A grades 30 IB points = 3.5 A-level A grades The typical A level offer for Oxbridge/Imperial is AAA. If that is the case, then why can't the candidates who obtained a score of 29 or 30 be admitted into those prestigious institutions? Im just curious

Hi everyone! This is my first post here, any help will be appreciated Basically, I am going to start IB next year. I'm best at maths and would like to study architecture in the future. So far I have decided to do: Group 1 - English Group 2 - Spanish ab initio (or maybe Chinese..) Group 4 - Physics Group 5 - Math Group 6 - Visual Arts - Design ...but for Group 3 - My school offers Business & Management, Economics, Psychology, Geography, ITGS and History. But as somebody wanting to study architecture, I don't know what will be the most useful for me. If the types of subjects from Group 3 don't really matter, which subject is it easiest to get good marks in? I have hea…

I'm currently taking IB Diploma now, and still unsure of where to go. The stress is taking its toll on me, and I haven't even got a long-term CAS project yet, and there's only seven more months to go before graduating. So, the thought of dropping to IB Certificate came to mind, but I'm afraid that it's practically useless for university applications. All of the unis in Australia only accepts Diploma, and the same goes for Singapore and other IB supporting schools. What is the use of IB Certificate, exactly, and is there a way to get into a university with it? I'm planning to take communications as a major, and you don't need much for that, so the Diploma serves as only …

Hello everyone. So yeah, the question is already stated above. However, I am concerned that not too many universities will take me with 30 IB points, in Europe, that is. I was hoping for like 34... that didn't happen. Also, I don't know if this will have any effect, I completed my IB Diploma in May and am taking a gap year until mid 2017. Preferably I want to apply to Sweden, where there don't seem to be any specific entry requirements... Back to the question... do you think I can make it into some decent Swedish uni or not-so-decent... for an Economics/Humanities/Modern Languages, this sort of stuff, undergraduate degree? I heard they have two atte…

I know that Math Studies isn't good enough for some universities especially outside the U.S. How would a university that does not accept deal with students who took Math Studies applying to their school? I mean do they simply flat out reject them or is there a way to compensate by taking a summer course or so on? I stayed a week in University of Toronto and decided I might end up applying there. However I took Math Studies and feel like I shouldn't even bother trying ;/. It's not like I knew better... IB is relatively new to Jersey City and my school (the only IB school here and only on its 2nd year).

Hi to all, I have received my IB exam results today, and even though I achieved quite surprising scores, I was let down by others. Overall I achieved 34 points: 5 in Physics HL 5 in Maths HL 5 in Economics HL 6 in Business & Management 6 in French B 6 English A +1 TOK & EE I under performed greatly in Maths and Physics. I expected to achieve 6s in both subjects and was let down when I saw 5s next to them. In addition, my Bath uni offer required a 6 in Maths HL for Civil Engineering. Thus, here I am asking for guidance on what to do next. I really want to go to Bath and I'd rather retake my exams in November and reapply than go through clearing. It would be amazin…

Moderator notice: Please refrain from chatting and commenting in this thread. Let's try to keep the thread nice and clean so that it'll be easy for people to get an overview of what kinds of offers people have received. Thanks! The thread for all us IBSers who have gotten offers to study in 2009. Post your offer with: the conditions, the predicted grades and the SAT scores (if you're applying to the US) you used to get an offer. I ask the PGs because students for 2010 can get a feel for their unis and see what unis require of them. If you haven't yet received your offers, you can post where you've applied and edit the post as the offers start rollin' in. -deissi Predicted…

Jus to clarify, I'm a full IB student (Diploma), but I've been debating lately whether I would benefit from dropping to partial IB (Certificate) or not. I'm currently in my last year, and I take Geography, History and English HLs and Math and Biology SLs. I hate hate hate Bio, and while Math is okay it does take up a lot of my time. I would rather concentrate more on my HLs instead of working my ass off to get a good mark in a Math test or sitting through two hours of tedious Bio class. I thought about dropping Bio and Math and only sticking with my HLs (plus Portuguese SL, which is self-taught and quite enjoyable). I talked to some people who had dropped from full to par…

Hi, I have been looking at some web pages of medical schools in the UK, and I'm starting to feel desperate: they all seem to require Chemistry at HL. The problem is that I only study SL Chem, HL is not even an option at our school. But I do have HL Biology and HL Mathematics, which I would imagine to help. Are there any universities in the UK, or somewhere in Europe, in which HL Chemistry is not a requirement? Also, I've heard that the tuition fees are lower in Scotland than in the rest of the UK, is this true?

I understand that they do need to be met I'm not talking drastic cases like applying to a 40 point university with 33 points.... It's mainly if they will still consider your application if you are a point or two under BUT have a good personal statement, work experience, LNAT as I'm going for law, etc. I'm predicted 37 but I didn't really try in the yr 12 mocks, plus the school messed up a couple of them by putting uncovered topics in them! Today at school we had our very first Extended Essay seminar and a piece of information that came up towards the end of the seminar was that 'if you want to go into medical school you need to write an Extended Essay related to what you want to do, most likely being Biology.' For a while now I've wanted to do it in Chemistry Looking at how Nitrogen can be absorbed by muscle tissue and the blood under pressure and how that leads to decompression sickness. Meanwhile this idea was contested with a possibility to go on a 4 week Scientific project where I applied to carry out some research to something related to stem cells or DNA. The school told us that this project called th…

Hello guys, I am finishing IB1 with not very good grades so it is very unlikely to have ~40 predicted points by November of next year which implies that it will be very hard (practically impossible) to get in top-universities in US as they take in consideration only predicted grades. As the summer is approaching, I am planning to study hard so I can, hopefully, pass better in IB2. I am confident that in the final exams of next year I will achieve good grades, however that is not the case with the predicted grades which I will be getting in November because there is very short time to show my effort & improvement. So, my question is: Let's say I get a predicted ~36 …
