How's everyone doing on their CAS? What activiities does your school offer (especially for Service) For Service: my school has a Cambodia trip with this ngo called hope international. obviously you have to pay but i went last year and its defenitely a trip that changed my life. we stayed in a little town called pursat, between pnom penh and the famous ankor wat (cant spell) and we help build wells and schools. my whole sense perseption (tok word there) changed, and i see the world in a completely different view - however cliche that sounds. im glad that i did ib,a nd that cas exists. but i know a lot of people out there abo****ely despises cas. tell me your opinions wha…

The answer to this question comes down to one thing - who exactly is it that decides what counts for CAS?? Answer: your CAS Co-ordinator! Not the IBO, not people here, not other schools and other CAS Co-ordinators, not your friends or your teachers... the individual person in charge of CAS at your school. You'd be amazed how much this varies between schools - some schools are happy for you to write online blogs and play videogames, whereas other schools would laugh in your face if you suggested those things as CAS. Some of you may even be laughing now - but if you could get CAS for those things, wouldn't you? So, if you want to be really 100% sure that an a…

I just realized that most schools don't follow the 150 hours quota that IB set up. My school has a requirement of 360hours and a 40 hour cap on an activity, so that's quite a lot. What's yours? And why do schools have differently set amount of CAS hours required?

Personally, I despise CAS . First and foremost, it's insane to require 150 (or, I've heard, even more than that for some schools!) hours of CAS activities on top of all the more serious/important aspects of IB, such as the extended essay, exams, or internal assessments. Also, I oppose CAS to some extent on a matter of principle... I got involved in IB because I wanted a good academic challenge, and these CAS activities have nothing to do with that. The one and only kind thing I have to say about CAS is the fact that it provided some good material to write college application essays.

Do you write your CAS diary?! How should it be structured? And do you describe every activity you do?
Last reply by AdamekOwns, -
I thought I should create a thread about this since there seems to be a variety of things different schools allow students to do for CAS. Are there any things that you are NOT allowed to count as CAS in your school? Do you know something that another school has allowed or not allowed and etc? For instance, me and a group of friends needed creativity and thought of starting the yearbook for IB Alumni 08 but our CAS coordinator refused to accept it and said that 'we would do it anyway' which is not true and then he says that the IBO won't let it. However, I have heard that there is another school in Finland in which people can work on the yearbook for creativity which I th…

Hi there, ;] There's a problem that bugs me all the time: action hours. Throughout the previous year this section was the one containing the smallest amount of hours (while creativity and service had more than enough). So, I'm asking for your help here. What kind of good and recognised activities are known to earn plenty of cas hours every month? Just brainstorm them randomly. ;]

Hi! I was browsing through the forums and was inspired by @ouribjourney's post of creating a worldwide CAS project. I'm interested in doing something similar where I can make a website to hit the learner outcome of Engaging with issues of global importance to enhance gender equality. In the website, I'm aiming to incorporate news articles, statistics & photographs to show gender inequality & suggestions on overcoming it. To make it worldwide, I was hoping that people from different parts of the world can share their experiences regarding gender inequality and how they think it can be reduced where they live. I live in Tanzania (East Africa) where some …

Hi guys, I've seen a few worldwide CAS projects and they seemed super cool. I've wanted to participate in one myself for a while. Now, I don't have any specific ideas in mind, because I wanted everyone to have their own say in this since it is worldwide). I think we should all have a part in this and we should collaborate to find the right project! I did have a few vague suggestions from fellow IB-ers that I wanted to share: Show local injustices and make a strong political statement Something with Amnesty International values - women, kids, minority rights Show the country from which you come from's uniqueness Incorporate photography or videos to visually conn…

In my school, the candidates of 2010, have been told that we are to follow an entirely different CAS system for our IB. Instead of having to complete 150 hours of Creativity, Action and Service of no more than 50 hours for one activity, we have to have enough activities (at least one long term) that have to cover all the criteras of CAS. This means that as long as you do a long term and it constitutes all the sides of CAS, it can be one activity only. For example, say you are part of the Student council. You "creatively" create posters to advertise a marathon fundraiser (Creativity), you organise the marathon (Service) and you take part in the marathon (Action), and tha…

Conversation with my friend: Him: Would some kind of video game count as creative? Me:Look it up. I doubt it. Him: What seriously? That's dumb, video games can be really creative Me: Yes, the VIDEO game is creative, not you when you're playing it. Whoever made the game could have qualified for the hours, but not you. It's not that dumb Him: Lol seriously though, you can create many things in video games. Depending on the game. Some are just applications that you can use as your own sandbox. Help me settle this argument? Cause frankly I'm not sure anymore, but still leaning towards it not qualifying.

Watching Movies for CAS 1 2

The CAS supervisor at my school had blatantly said that anything can be counted as CAS as long as we can convince her. Our school also has a 30 hour limit meaning that only 30 hours of school related extracurricular activities can count for CAS this is for both years, and for all categories. What I want to do is to convince my CAS supervisor that watching movies in school does not fall under school related activities No we're not going to critique the movies, but I suppose that I could do that for journal entries I'm just looking for suggestions, and arguments that will convince my CAS supervisor to exempt this activity from those 30 hours. If it helps at all, I am also t…

I have posted a similar post, but it sank somewhere on this website, so I am posting another post. I BEAR GREAT NEWS! So I talked to my CAS supervisor about this idea I had, but with a little twist. It is very simple and you can do it easily and at the same time it would count as an international collaborative CAS project for you. So the idea is that each person or a group of IB students from different countries would make two short videos. The first you would shoot a video talking about a major problem in your country. Just grab your camera, find a nice background, and discuss the problem! You can also go out and take live pictures! For example, my country which is S…

After reading around on this forum and several other websites, I've found that I believe that my school is too harsh about the criteria for CAS. Our adviser tells us that CAS cannot benefit ourselves in any way whatsoever, so it is basically all service, and you have to fit helping people into the creativity and action. Our sports, drama, and band/colorguard each get a maximum of 20 hours over the two years (for each one). For mine, I used community theater shows for creativity, tutoring elementary students for service, and basically...nothing for action. I did a charity walk via National Honor Society, but so far that's all I have. I know they redid the CAS requirements…

Is it ok to finish the service hours with one or two things that i do continuously? Or would it be better to do diverse short-term services? I have lots of service hours already (Grade 11) and it will soon be over the expected amount but the problem is that I kinda feel worried that my service wasnt diverse enough because i only did 2 kinds In a way, it sounds better to stick to some things and do them continuously and in a way, it sounds better to venture diverse service activities what do u think is better?

Okay, so I have tons of creative and service hours but I have zero action hours. I understand the point of service and creativity and I understand how they can be combined and stuff but what does action mean exactly? If I don't do sports what can I do? i.e. If I run a poetry program (which I do as creativity and service b/c it's free and i'm helping kids get better with their creative side) what can I add as action? Would action be me performing the poems? Bringing them to writing conventions? Just showing up to the meetings and talking and writing? So if anybody could please help me out by telling me what action means according to the baove activity and what it means i…

Like the topic says:P Someone in my school a few years ago graduated with a two thousand CAS hours and got 43 in the end, props to her, she got into an Ivy League with full scholarship I believe. Hats off to her, really. I'm still in my first 4 months of IB really, but I've actually finished my CAS hours already. Well not quite, because I can't write my reflections for my ECAs and get them approved until Year 12, so I won't count it as quite complete. But yeah, I hope I'm not the only creepy curious one here:)

Our CAS coordinator (and I think also the IBO) says that you should write down every single CAS activity you do on your CAS diary. Does somebody actually do that? In our cases, we mostly have too many hours (over hundred, especially those who play instruments) and therefore just don't write some down. It would take ages to keep track of them all (it would not be a diary, but a book) and we probably are too lazy to do that... Are there any other people doing the same thing like we do? Or is it not really allowed at all to not note down your CAS activities? I mean we are at least not falsifying them...

Hey everyone! I've had this thought cross my mind recently. Since cyber-bullying is becoming such a big problem around the world, I've thought about gathering students from different IB world schools and share, or post information about cyber-bullying. This could be counted as a CAS activity for you since you're raising awareness for something and helping people around the world. Would anyone be willing to initiate this with me? If you have more ideas/advice, feel free to post them, I'm open for any suggestions. Also, I'll be using blogger (blogspot.com) for this, so you (sadly) will have to have a google account, if you have another idea on what else we could use for th…

So I've left CAS to the last minute. The due date for all evalutations and the essay etc is in 8 days. And I have 18 service hours to do. I talked to my coordinator..who didn't suggest anything realistic. I'm going to do some beach cleanups but that'll only get a few hours, won't even get me down to 10 probably. My supervisor for things like this will probably be my dad. Any other ideas? I just want easy things that I can do by myself, like beach cleanups.

Hey, So, I need to find ways to get some more creativity. I have some for guitar playing, but it's just not enough. Sooo.. Anyone have any ideas for activities that aren't 'artsy' in the traditional sense (I don't like painting, drawing etc. It's just not me)? Something that might be offered as a weekend camp sort of thing would be great. I've looked at first aid courses, but I can't seem to find any offered near me. Anyone?
