How's everyone doing on their CAS? What activiities does your school offer (especially for Service) For Service: my school has a Cambodia trip with this ngo called hope international. obviously you have to pay but i went last year and its defenitely a trip that changed my life. we stayed in a little town called pursat, between pnom penh and the famous ankor wat (cant spell) and we help build wells and schools. my whole sense perseption (tok word there) changed, and i see the world in a completely different view - however cliche that sounds. im glad that i did ib,a nd that cas exists. but i know a lot of people out there abo****ely despises cas. tell me your opinions wha…

The answer to this question comes down to one thing - who exactly is it that decides what counts for CAS?? Answer: your CAS Co-ordinator! Not the IBO, not people here, not other schools and other CAS Co-ordinators, not your friends or your teachers... the individual person in charge of CAS at your school. You'd be amazed how much this varies between schools - some schools are happy for you to write online blogs and play videogames, whereas other schools would laugh in your face if you suggested those things as CAS. Some of you may even be laughing now - but if you could get CAS for those things, wouldn't you? So, if you want to be really 100% sure that an a…

I'm a first year IB student. I realized that we have do this CAS thing for a total of 150 hours, so I signed up for some activities both in school and out of school. Our CAS coordinator told us to submit all the reflections on the CAS activities on a website called ManageBac and asked us to write a reflection on every 10 hours of activities completed. However, I'm not sure what I should include in my reflections. For example, if I practice guitar at home for 10 hours per week, does that mean I have to do a reflection on what I practiced during those 10 hours per week to qualify for my Creativity hours? Also, is there a certain format we can follow to write our reflections…

So, I've recently learned that I have to do 150 hours of CAS! Would really appreciate some ideas as to what I should do. What are you doing/did??? What I currently do: Creativity- I have played violin for 7 years (am terrible). Can I count lessons or anything towards my CAS hours even though it's not a new activity? I learn Japanese outside of school with a uni student tutoring me. Does it count? Action- I have played netball for 5 months of the year outside school for a number of years... again, can I count it even though I've done it before? Ideas please! Service- Ideas please! I have been thinking about studying Law post-IB... is there any way I can count relevant work…

Hi all, I'm starting IB this year, and was told in the spring of last year that I would have to do a CAS Project. The thing is, we were told we're not allowed to work with another organization. Are we expected to actually create our own charity from scratch? That's not a huge problem, I'm just kind of confused. Thanks!

Hi there, ;] There's a problem that bugs me all the time: action hours. Throughout the previous year this section was the one containing the smallest amount of hours (while creativity and service had more than enough). So, I'm asking for your help here. What kind of good and recognised activities are known to earn plenty of cas hours every month? Just brainstorm them randomly. ;]

Hello, I'd like to know, just out of curiosity - what happens if you fail to get enough CAS? I heard some time ago that if it happens, you get an extra year to complete CAS, and then you get the diploma. Are there any other consequences (besides getting the diploma later)?

I just realized that most schools don't follow the 150 hours quota that IB set up. My school has a requirement of 360hours and a 40 hour cap on an activity, so that's quite a lot. What's yours? And why do schools have differently set amount of CAS hours required?

Starting to plan CAS projects and activities . I reached moat of the learning outcomes already, but was not sure how to do the Ethics one. It reads as follows: "Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions: Students show awareness of the consequences of choices and actions in planning and carrying out CAS experiences." Ideas for projects reaching this leaning outcome, or just help on figuring out what it is would be helpful. thanks

Currently, I'm getting my creativity hours by practicing jazz music on the piano. My CAS coordinator told us that playing instruments was fine for creativity, as long as it was something new (I only played RCM classical piano until then). I've read that students need to get their hours signed by a supervisor for the activities, but I'm only practicing at home. I'm pretty sure my mom can't be a supervisor. Will these hours spent practicing count even without a signature? My school has a yellow CAS sheet, where we only need to put in our CAS activity name and number of hours spent on it. I don't see anything that needs a supervisor signature. Basically, my question is, do…

This topic concerns the statement made by charlotteee ( http://www.ibsurvival.com/topic/5-ib-students-starter-pack-ib-faq-syllabus-links/ ) 1)First of all, are the requirements stated above still up-to-date? (or: Do they still affect me if I start the IB in September 2014/ exams: May 2016?) 2) And what exactly is meant with the " Long-Term project/activity that last for at least the duration of the two IB years"? 3) Are there any other general information about CAS in general? Thanks

So my friends and I are arguing over this, and I need the advice of the internet: Can I count going to concerts for action hours? In my opinion yes because it is a LOT of physical activity, but I'm not sure if it counts. Otherwise, can I count it for creativity in some way? Also, I'm teaching myself some American Sign Language. Could that possibly be creativity?

Like the topic says:P Someone in my school a few years ago graduated with a two thousand CAS hours and got 43 in the end, props to her, she got into an Ivy League with full scholarship I believe. Hats off to her, really. I'm still in my first 4 months of IB really, but I've actually finished my CAS hours already. Well not quite, because I can't write my reflections for my ECAs and get them approved until Year 12, so I won't count it as quite complete. But yeah, I hope I'm not the only creepy curious one here:)

I thought I should create a thread about this since there seems to be a variety of things different schools allow students to do for CAS. Are there any things that you are NOT allowed to count as CAS in your school? Do you know something that another school has allowed or not allowed and etc? For instance, me and a group of friends needed creativity and thought of starting the yearbook for IB Alumni 08 but our CAS coordinator refused to accept it and said that 'we would do it anyway' which is not true and then he says that the IBO won't let it. However, I have heard that there is another school in Finland in which people can work on the yearbook for creativity which I th…

Conversation with my friend: Him: Would some kind of video game count as creative? Me:Look it up. I doubt it. Him: What seriously? That's dumb, video games can be really creative Me: Yes, the VIDEO game is creative, not you when you're playing it. Whoever made the game could have qualified for the hours, but not you. It's not that dumb Him: Lol seriously though, you can create many things in video games. Depending on the game. Some are just applications that you can use as your own sandbox. Help me settle this argument? Cause frankly I'm not sure anymore, but still leaning towards it not qualifying.

Personally, I despise CAS . First and foremost, it's insane to require 150 (or, I've heard, even more than that for some schools!) hours of CAS activities on top of all the more serious/important aspects of IB, such as the extended essay, exams, or internal assessments. Also, I oppose CAS to some extent on a matter of principle... I got involved in IB because I wanted a good academic challenge, and these CAS activities have nothing to do with that. The one and only kind thing I have to say about CAS is the fact that it provided some good material to write college application essays.

So I started IB in February this year, so its been about... Half a year since I've started. I've been doing most of my CAS regularly, but I've missed a few reflections. We've been advised to do at least one every month, but there are times when I've done 2 in one month and none in the month after, but then started again the following month. Also, there have been problems with my long-term project which involves visiting an elderly person every week. She's been real sick these past few months so I haven't been able to do anything. i'm getting paranoid about all this as I heard that so many people fail IB because of CAS! Does anyone know what it actually takes to fail…

I had a few ideas of things I'd like to do as well as things I'm going to be doing this year and I was wondering if any of them might count for CAS: - I'm in my school's book club, and we discuss a book each month. Could this count for creativity? - Could hikes with Environmental Club count for active? - I know that activities advocating a religion don't count (such as teaching religious education at my church), but could making the lessons plans for this count for creativity, or is any religious-related activity not allowed? - Learning an instrument - would this be allowed for creativity, if it was outside of school? - If I took a language course at a college over the s…

Hello everyone! I have been offered a part-time position at a library, with about 8-10 hours a week. I would absolutely love to work there and it is a good way to earn some money on the side. Also, I think it would be good experience for me as I have not had a paid job before. The problem is that I am very involved with other extra-curricular activities and as I am in my first year of the IB Diploma Program , I want to be able to focus on my studies and get high marks. Since I can't do it all, either the job goes or some extra-curricular activities. Therefore, I am thinking of declining the job offer unless it can count for CAS hours or if it is beneficial for m…

I just wanted to make sure that playing an instrument (or singing) counts as creativity. I'm in IB2 and basically all my creativity hours are from playing the guitar, piano or singing and now my CAS coordinator (who at the beginning of IB1 said that playing an instrument was indeed creativity) started complaining about how playing an instrument should count as action and not creativity, as only performing with the instrument is creativity. However, I won't be able to perform anywhere this year (due to my stage fright and lack of opportunities to do so), and I haven't performed with e.g. guitar which I haven't been playing for a while. In our school last years grads did an recycling project with a school in Germany. If anyone would like to do something like this with your class you can post here. it would be a great CAS project and if we are close we could visit each others schools and help out with the project kinda like the Comenius projects (http://ec.europa.eu/...comenius_en.htm) of the UN. thanks for your consideration, .. .

In our school there is only DP. Every year about 35-40 students start Year 1 and 25-28 start Year 2. Unfortunately, we have to do CAS paperwork - print our description of activity with photos, collect signatures, bring them to CAS coordinator. It is really time and money consuming. Also, our only evidence can be photos(since we have to print the forms). I was surfing IBSurvival when I found this program called ManageBac. I quickly glanced at it and it looked GREAT. I want to convince my CAS coordinator to use it, but before I try to do that I have to find strong arguments and make a research on it. I do not want to convince my school to use, when it turns out to be a pie…
