Hey, so I heard that the IBO changed the requirements for CAS, we no longer have to do a 150 hours or so, but i think we have to do something like 18 months of CAS activites is that right? So i was wondering.. In our CAs diaries.. Instead of writing every single day you have a CAS activity, is it possible to just write two cas diaries, so one at the beginning of the month, and one at the end of the month, but both of them will count for two individual days. That will count as a month. So yeah.. I was just thinking about that, wondering... Maybe the IBO won't accept it.. no idea.. What do you think?

Hi, I want to learn how to play the violin for creativity, but unfortunately I don't have the opportunity to take lessons. However, I have used YouTube to learn to play the piano, and that worked out fine. How can I document my progress without a teacher? Do I need some kind of approval from a leader, or is it enough if I write up the amount of hours myself and then show my cas-coordinator my progress through videos/sound recordings? I really want to do this for cas, so any help to convince my coordinator that this is a good idea will be highly appreciated!

Hey guys, I'm in my grade 12 year so I need to finish up my CAS soon but I can't think of what to do for creativity. One thing I did was create a blog which my supervisor allowed but to be honest, I have sort of procrastinated with that and haven't kept up though I will be more consistent now (one challenge I face is figuring out what to write in my reflections for this). Anyways, I still need another CAS activity (only have 4) and the only section which I probably need to focus on is creativity but as I mentioned I don't know what do. So I was thinking, can I learn how to draw/paint at home and do this for CAS? The problem I have with this is that I would need to do s…

How essential is it that we have solid evidence for CAS (e.g. photos, signatures, etc.)? Or do we just have to write reflections and have them approved by our CAS coordinator?

Hey guys, My school is terrible at explaining the way CAS works, and I'll be starting IB this year (in summer at the moment). I have heard that in order to "fulfill" CAS, you basically have to tick off objectives, which are given by the school and vary by institution? Can someone give me a basic explanation on how CAS works, and how not to fail it? Sorry for being a noob, Thanks!

Hello I am recently started helping out at a local lawyer firm, because i am in desperate need of service hours. As you are all aware if we do not complete CAS hours, we will be denied from our IB diploma! So, I am helping them do things like: Typing up documentsSome simple translationSorting documents out (adding them to a list on a Word document, checking all listed documents are in the correct box etc.)Helping make folders which are needed for cases (eg all documents for a case will be put in a folder)Tearing documents, for recyclingPlease be mindful that I am in no way getting paid for these activities. I have been doing this for 3 hours a week, about 4 weeks now. Do …

Heeeyyy So, I went to the mall and volunteered to collect money for a charity for one hour. This is one of my first service hours (I've already way exceeded the action and creativity hours so lol, need my service!!!) but I have no idea how to write a service reflection on something like this, as literally all I did was stood and smiled at people, then thanked them when they gave me money... What do I need to cover in a service reflection? What should I talk about/focus on? Thanks!!!

Dear all, Recently my CAS supervisor locked all of my activities from Year 12 (junior year) on Managebac and instructed me to create new ones for Year 13 (senior year)? I'm rather worried about the whether or not this is permitted by the IBO... Can someone provide clarification? I'm rather worried...

Is it absolutely necessary to have a supervisor for all Cas activities? What if you have proof of your activity that you can show your cas coordinator? For example, lets say you developed a program/app for creativity, it would be easy to show proof of this activity, so would that be enough to have it approved?

Hello there. Today we were given out reflection papers during our CAS period. I don't understand the concept of it because our coordinator didn't really go through it. Does it mean that everyday if I involve in an activity, service or action I should complete a reflection? And on my refection paper, there is a box saying "TOTAL HOURS SPENT ON THIS PROJECT UNTIL NOW." Today I engaged in traditional dancing and it was my first time trying it out so therefore what does fill inside this box? Thank you

Hi all, if you're using managebac, you've probably noticed theres an update to the website. I'm just about finished CAS and needing to go back and look at my reflections to fill out a CAS completion form, but because all my activities are completed I can't access the reflections bar the first 50 or so words? would any one know how to fix this because neither I, anyone in my class or my CAS teacher can access any of our reflections and we're meant to be signing of next week... thanks!!

so i was thinking of talking to my CAS coordinator and making some kind of online newsletter for conti. like a newsletter, but actually interesting? and accessible from online instead of just within the school. obviously it would have to be worked on daily as far as school announcements go, but it would also have *interesting* posts(like reports on school events eg. sports day, away games for sports, peace day, international day, whatever) every month. i guess it would be a blog, actually. i talked to my english teacher about it and he said it would work as CAS, and since id be leading the whole operation i get extra points or something like that? like i said i know nothi…

Hey! I just started IB, and I've been looking around at posts about programming w/ CAS (I was wondering if it's possible since you don't necessarily have somebody to supervise you?). On top of that, it is invalid if you receive a pay. What if I am running my own startup and have received angel funding, but am not making any revenue yet? Does this still count for CAS? Thanks! Regards, Rohan

Hi! My friend and I are starting a newspaper focused on Foreign Affairs and are looking for good writers. It definitely counts for CAS (creativity and service) and doesn't require too much work! Email me if you're interested; we are looking for good writers with an interest in politics, foreign affairs, government or anything of the sort! [email protected] www.youngdiplomacy.com

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible for us to make YouTube videos for CAS hours (I would obviously put this under Creativity if this was possible). The topic of these YouTube videos would likely be gaming, however, I would still have to collect footage and then edit it so that I can make the video presentable. I would assume that collecting and editing footage can be viewed as a creative activity, but what are your thoughts about this?

Hi! Me and my friends are planning to create a visual novel/game as part of Creativity, Action, and Service. We're looking for an artist who can draw manga/anime style for the game. This is going to count for Creativity. We are graduating in May 2017, so it would be beneficial if you were on the same time frame knowing that the CAS requirements have recently changed, abolishing the concept of CAS hours. If you're interested, please reply on this thread or send me a message. Thanks!

Hey guys, I was just pondering over what activity I could do for my cas, and I stumbled upon a thought (I hope this hasn't been discussed already ). Can I MAKE a video game for cas? At first I told myself there was no way, but when I thought about it, it actually occurred to me that it might just work. Creativity would be writing the script and making and designing characters, I cant think of an action example, and service could be donating some, if not all, of the proceedings to charity. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Hello IB Survival, I am a Junior in IB, and i'm currently working on a game for the iOS devices. Im using objective-c in XCODE to make the game, pure apple code from pure scratch. Its a new skill that i learned, and im working collaboratively with a friend. I can definitely reflect many hours on this project, and making it fit into CAS is no problem. HOWEVER, after working so hard on the game and realizing its potential, me and my partner decided to make the game have advertisements, for which we would receive payment depending on user impressions. I couldn't find a definite answer online, nor have i asked my CAS coordinator, but does anybody know whether i can fit this …

ok so I wanted to try a CAS activity (because I am extremely lacking in CAS and am awful at it) I wanted to make a photography portfolio of IB students from around the world doing things not-IB related, or rather, having fun/doing things to escape school life and take a break from it all. I wasn't sure if this was a great focus for the portfolio or if I should do a more academic and IB related one? Either way, this would be a great way to learn the cultural and global aspects of CAS that I can never find where I'm at. Anyway, then once I started compiling the photos, I was going to make the portfolio on a blog (probably on tumblr) instead of having a hard copy portfo…

Well its three months in to the first year of IB and I am a little stumped on what to do for Creative, Action, Service. I was already thinking about playing sports for Action and then helping kids learn football (the real football not soccer) at a local club. But I am not sure what to do about Creative. Any help advice would be awesome.

I'm sort of sorting everything out before I start pre- IB, and wish to avoid major confusions to ensure that my Grade 10 year runs smoothly. (Yes, apparently the summer after Grade 10 can be used to accumulate some CAS hours.) How would they assess the hours you receive from creating video content? Would they have to record the time you work on the project, or the duration of the actual content? Do factors such as video quality, effects, etc. make a difference? Does this event count for CAS?

Hi. I was wondering if it as strict requirement to do 50 hours of every CAS component. I live in a small city and there aren't many sport classes offered. I'm worried that I won't be able to fulfill the requirement of doing 50 hours of Action and I will miss the deadline set by my school (April 2015) for CAS reflections. However, I have joined two foundations so I will probably have much more than 50 hours of Service by April 2015. So will I fail CAS if I have for example only 30 hours of Action but, say, 70 hours of Service (it gives altogether 100)? Or maybe it isn't that important? Maybe it depends solely on school's policy? I guess I will somehow manage to do these…

Hey guys, I've been donating blood for the past few blood drives held at my school and obviously that's a service to the community. I was just wondering if I could include that into my CAS journal? And if so, how could I ask for any hours? It takes literally less than 15 minutes to donate a pint. Thanks.

Hi everyone. I am currently planning out my CAS hours. I was certain that yoga and running a half marathon (both of which I have never done) would count as action hours, but I am not sure if it would fulfill these requirements: - must benefit others (the half marathon is a charity run, so I suppose it would?) - supervisor I suppose for yoga I could have the instructor be my supervisor, but what about the half marathon if I was following a training plan? Any guidance appreciated! Also, I am drum major of my school's marching band - creativity or action hours (or both)? Sorry, I am new to this. Thanks in advance!

I was going through my CAS entries on Bacpoint and realised that I'm not actually in many of the photos that I put as evidence. For example if I volunteered for an event I only had photos of the posters because I forgot to take photos on the day and all my photos for baking are of the food themselves without me in it. Is this something I should be worried about and would I need to provide photos that actually show me doing the activity?

I was going to do the CAS project by joining a project conducted by an organization called 'Project Abroad' which is non governmental/political organization. The duration for this project will be exactly two weeks, and it's going to be carried out in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This project targets children in Phnom Penh, so we will be building playground, caring children and do gardening. However, I have to pay for insurance, food and accommodation. Does this project fulfill the requirements as a CAS project? Another question is that I am learning Kendo in Korea at the moment (Activity). Would continuing Kendo in Cambodia be a CAS Project as well? Lastly, how many hours of…

Hi everyone, I want to use programming as my CAS project with the end goal to be a fully functioning mobile app or website. The problem that I have with this is that I'm unsure of how exactly I can prove the amount of time that I will be spending on the activity as I won't have someone to supervise me when I'm doing the work. In all the submission forms it says that a supervisor is required, is there any way to get around this, like show them another form of evidence of my work? Also please let me know if there are other ways to show you've done CAS hours without a supervisor, for example if I go on a 10k run and I want to use it as my CAS hours. Any help is ap…

Translating or programming as a CAS activity

Hi again, I'm wondering if it would be possible to count translating sites/videos/etc. and writing/translating subtitles to a video as a CAS activity. And does it look more like a creativity or a service? In my opinion it seems as a quite extraordinary thing to do so I doubt anybody do/did it as CAS, but it you did it would be superb if you share your experiences. Also, I thought about involving computer programming into CAS, but I don't have any specific idea so far since I'm at the beginner level. Do you think it would count? Have anybody tried computer programming as CAS?

Starting to plan CAS projects and activities . I reached moat of the learning outcomes already, but was not sure how to do the Ethics one. It reads as follows: "Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions: Students show awareness of the consequences of choices and actions in planning and carrying out CAS experiences." Ideas for projects reaching this leaning outcome, or just help on figuring out what it is would be helpful. thanks
