IB Visual Arts Workbook Guidance One of the biggest problems I have seen students encounter in their IB1 and IB2 with IB Visual Arts is their workbooks. For my Visual Arts HL course I am taking option B, therefore I focus mainly on my workbook rather than studio work. Below I wish to give advice on how to complete amazing workbooks pages that relate to your studio works. All of the information below is from my personal experience and from watching other IB students in visual arts who have received 6s and 7s for their final IB grade. Besides giving simple advice, I have reviewed the syllabus, and I will try to demonstrate how the advice and tips given relate to what is sai…

Hey there I definitely noticed that there is quite a lack of Theatre Arts students, or at least ones experienced enough to hand out tips and experiences. My exams are May 2012 so can't say that I'm am an all-knowing guru of Theatre Arts wisdom but I do have a teacher who has been teaching IB Theatre for a couple years and he's produced good results. Plus I'm just really passionate about it so it helps. So anyways more specifically this post is about the Independent Project Portfolio because I just finished mine and man was it fun, but a lot more work than I had expected and I hoped that I could offer up a few words of advice for any first/second years who haven't yet s…

For the past year I've been completely into my visual art theme and I've always wanted to know what other people have picked. So this is a space for anyone to share what their theme is and how they decided upon their theme. Mine is focused upon Japanese art and western culture influencing on Japanese art. I arrived at this topic because of my love for Japanese culture and the language. I've explored a large array of different media with all kinds of topics.

Art is a very wishy-washy subject. For most subjects, it is pretty self-explanatory on how to get a perfect 7. But I always hear that people very rarely get a 7 in art. So share your tips and let's try our best to get through such a wearisome subject. Here are my tips: for the studio work: - make it as attractive as you can. you want the first impression to be a good one. - make use of a variety of materials- be open minded/inventive. who says you must stick to paper all the time? - the title really aids the viewer in figuring out the theme. having said that, don't make your theme so obvious that it just clicks when you look at the art. it should be thought provoking - it…

So, I'm an SL Music student and I'm starting my musical investigation. I'M STUMPED!!! Anyone got any topic ideas to share? Or something to get me going? My only possible topic idea is Irish folk music, and if I needed to be more specific, I could say from the 1800's. I have NO reason for using that, it just came up one day. Help???

Mine is on saturday, and I dont know what it is. Our teacher told us that basically we get up there adn talk for 20 minutes and we need to have pictures, btu what are we supposed to talk about? She hasn't told us anything really, and when I asked her she just told me we would "talk later" adn she's been saying this for far too long for me to wait any longer.

hi everyone, i just wanted to make this topic to get some help. this is my second year of IB, and i'm having a really hard time as it is. on top of how hard all the subjects are, i have to worry about the teachers and how they teach us - my school is very small, and it doesn't care about education as much as its reputation, which frustrates me (if i said frustration i probably could have turned that into a rap ...) but anyway, i don't know if i'm going to make sense but i'll just start rambling - ib art, hl: 16 projects, including your workbook. so far that is literally all i know. the i have a different teacher than i did in year one, and i was recently told that these …

Hey there! So, I have like a thousand questions about IB Music, although I won't haunt you with all of them. And yes, some of them might sound stupid, but I want to see if I actually get the whole thing. Would really appreciate an answer, as my nearest IB Diploma School who teaches Music is like... three countries away (I'm moving off for UWC in the US, yay!). 1. The syllabus, am I correct if I say that it's about 1/3 musical theory, 1/3 composition and 1/3 performance? 2. How's the exams? I see it's okey enough to write an exam on musical theory and analysis, but what about the rest? Is it recording/oral? 3. Do I have to be a world-class singer if I want to take IB Music…

I am starting the IB program and i took Art HL, because I was always interested in it and really enjoy drawing. Before I did IGCSEs, but didn't take art. However over the summer I had private art lessons and I am totally OK with working and learning A LOT. How hard will the course be for me and what are the general requirements for students who are taking IB art?

Hello I'm about to start IB1 (Nov 2010) and am considering doing V-Art SL(A). I have no formal art background, but have done graphic design all my life and have recently picked up drawing still life/portraits using materials like charcoal and pencil (educating myself from books >__>). More importantly, I'm really interested to learn more about art, its purpose and how it achieves and, as well as to produce it. I'm just wondering how tough the course is, how strict the grading is, and how "creative" you need to be, how difficult it is to score a 7... especially coming from someone who's never done it before. I can't access the sample art files from the sticky becaus…

So I have this list of terminology for music, and I tried my hardest to define them... Thought I'd share it with you guys And Quid Pro Quo (haha my first use of that term) you guys can find any corrections and maybe add some words? HERE IT IS: DYNAMICS - Dynamic Swells : Swells in little crescendo’s and diminuendo’s - Terrace Dynamics : Different sections (like rice fields) (sudden changes in dynamics, often achieved by adding and subtracting the number of instruments) - Large Dynamic Contrast : Very Soft, or Very Loud - Fortissimo : Very Loud - Forte : Loud - Diminuendo : Gradually getting Softer - Crescendo : gradually getting louder MELODY - Counter Melody : Melody b…

Hi everyone! If you do art and your exams are in May 2016 or later, you're probably aware of the new Comparative Study. Basically, our art teacher didn't tell us much (I don't think he knows a lot about it himself) and I was just wondering how other people around the world are getting on with it (I personally haven't even started mine and the first draft is due on the 1st of September, so I am starting to get a little freaked out)

Hi, so I am confused on my Film Independent Study topic. I just wanted to know whether this would be a good topic to research on: "How the usage of lighting, cinematography, and mise-en-scene helps portray the balance of power in mafia genre films". I picked two films, "The Godfather" and "City of God" (foreign). If the topic is good, could you please give me any tips? (for example, overall tips on writing the independent study?) Also, do I need to modify the topic question at all? Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, This is my first year taking IB Music and I've come to realise that my teacher knows very little about IB Music and really isn't great at teaching this course. I think I'll have to self-teach myself most of this course!! On this note, can anyone recommend any textbooks/websites for IB Music? Anything about listening skills, musical context, music theory, IB syllabus, notes on set works, etc. Basically any useful resources for IB Music? Thank you so much in advance!!!

I was wondering how the IB music course was like. I'm not really worried about the theory or the performance, however more on the analysis. How are you guys finding music? Would it be a harder subject out of the ones your currently doing? Also should I do biology or music? As in which one is easier for you guys. Just wanting to see what other people think. Plus, with music, is it really hard to keep up with your practise time and also with homework in your other subjects? Cos I know some people practise a lot for their performances.. What's HL like?? Is it much harder? Also how hard is it to get a 7? I mean, music is a subject where everyone might think differently abou…

For my Theatre Practical Performance Proposal Section 3: "HL students should write a report of 1,000-1,500 words which should comprise of a commentary on any of the following aspects of the proposed performance: - Philosophical Rationale - Socio-historical influences - Traditional/cultural influences - Possible impacts and resonances" Now, we're doing just a practice one of these (I'm in IB1) and our stimulus is THE GUEST HOUSE. Here's a brief summary to what we're doing: It's all naturalism (based off of Stanislavski) and each student has taken on a new identity - for example, I play Clara Phillips, a rich heiress who suffers from OCD and severe paranoia. We've made it…

Today is January 8, 2012, and I've actually started to get nervous about my IB Theatre HL. My teacher has not given us any deadlines or a time frame to go by. We have only briefly discussed an idea for my research investigation. Is my class extremely behind? Is it too late to catch up? Can anyone walk me through the next year and a half and give me an idea of when I should be getting different things done? I have no idea and any help from other IB Theatre HL kids would really, really, really be appreciated. Thank you so much

For our TPPP, how many theatre traditions and external productions and school productions should we mention? It is better to just mention one or two and go in depth? Our class did a unit on naturalism, devising theatre, commedia and bunraku... and I've watched about 5 external productions. How many should I talk about, because 30 minutes isn't actually that much. And, how symbolic should our 7-10 images be?

How similar are IB Music and AP Music Theory? I am taking IB Music SL currently, and I am wondering if we will cover enough theory to take the AP Music Theory exam. I really signed up for IB Music for the theory, and then I found out it is more about history. So basically, is there enough time in the year to cover both the AP Music Theory and the IB Music syllabi? We have already finished the Baroque and Classical eras, and we still need to do Romanticism, 20th Century, medieval, Renaissance, and something about Dido and Aeneas. Do you think there's enough time? If it would be tough to do, do you think it would be possible if much of the work was done at home?

So, I'm doing Art HL option A and I've been really worried on my theme. Should there really be one unifying theme? My teacher told us that themes aren't really strictly checked because some students from other schools have no unifying theme (as in, their pieces were all out there) and they got a pretty decent grade. Would it be better to have one unifying theme or should I take the risk of not thinking of one and explore lots of stuff? I have been thinking of abuse and war, but is it alright if it's kind of vague? thanks in advance!

Hello! I am doing HL Theatre so I know that my word count is 3000 words. However, after reading the subject guide over and over again, and doing extensive googling- I cannot figure out what actually counts in the word count. I wrote and directed a 3-act play, so I wanted to include script excerpts and journal excerpts into the IPP, does that go into my word count? Also, are quotes/headings part of the word count? Hello, I was wondering how does the IB check for plagiarism in the Visual Arts course (for the visual content, like photos and images). I take Visual Arts HL Photography, and I am just worried that some of my content might show up online because I tend to publish stuff on Tumblr and such. Hi, I am taking currently taking visual arts HL but I started the IB very late and I have a lot to catch up especially for art. My theme was on world peace and I was trying to relate that to fashion. Another theme that I was thinking was traditions(Korean traditional art) expressed in a modern way. I really can not think of any kind of artwork that I could do for these themes. I'm not even sure whether or not these themes are ok to follow. Could someone give me some advice for my themes and what kind of artwork I could do? Thanks.

I am having trouble narrowing my RQ. Well, I want to do research on Cantonese Opera, but I am not able to find the books that I need in the library. So therefore I turned to classical theatre (Greek theatre. I decided that I wanted to focus on Aeschylus and the play will be Agamemnon. The RQ's I have thought of so far are: how would the characters in Agamemnon by Aeschylus speak and move on the stage? Or How would the choir emphasize their role in Agamemnon by Aeschylus? Our teacher (who just gave birth to a boy) planned for us to do the RI march, april and may! Our class is pretty ticked off at such a mistake. We have not even been informed about the RQ.
