Hi, Does anyone know any topics or two cultures I should do with some suggested pieces for me to check out for insipiration? I'm desperately trying to configure two cultures.. I started with the Chinese traditional music and western classical which didn't work out for me mainly because I have no idea how to read chinese music and I have no idea how to listen to music to catch out all the technical details (I simply suck at listening lol) I then asked to swap my cultures to Gamelan and Debussy but my teacher commented saying that there isn't much to talk about apart from Pitch... I really need some suggestions and if possible some help from anyone please? My first draf…

Dear all, For my Musical Links Investigation, my teacher and I have come to a conclusion that it would be interesting to analyse the differences between an Irish Mazurka by Packie Manus and a Chopin Mazurka. I have sources that Polish folk music arrived in Ireland before Chopin had started to compose the dance, but I am worried that the two pieces are too similar to compare. What are your thoughts?

Hi, I'm taking IB Music SL this year, and have some questions about the solo performance. How long does the recording have to be? (I saw 15 minutes on somewhere but could it be shorter than that?) If I'm playing the piano, how many pieces am I allowed to perform? (could it be a compilation of multiple small pieces?) Can I play more than one instrument? I did choir for a couple years and also play the banjo. Does the genre of the pieces we play have to be consistent? Can I play like a jazz piece and a Mozart? I don't play any pieces longer than 5 minutes... am I in trouble? I'm testing in May 2016.Our teacher is new so he didn't have an answer to any of these. Thanks i…

I love films and I study about it in free time for fun. I heard there will be a lot of writing and analysing stuff in IB Film, and no matter SL or HL we have to make an individual project (a short film). Is Film SL more difficult than Drama SL? Is it suitable to study this course online? Does it has a final exam?

Hello guys! Previously, I picked the theme "myself" or "self reflection", but now I want to change my art theme to "people". I really have no idea if this is acceptable or not but I want to do it because I actually really enjoy drawing people and it is something I want to get better at.

Hi everyone, This is my first year taking IB Music and I've come to realise that my teacher knows very little about IB Music and really isn't great at teaching this course. I think I'll have to self-teach myself most of this course!! On this note, can anyone recommend any textbooks/websites for IB Music? Anything about listening skills, musical context, music theory, IB syllabus, notes on set works, etc. Basically any useful resources for IB Music? Thank you so much in advance!!!

Hey guys. I was wondering if the studio work that counted for our final IA in May 2016 only encompasses fine art and clay models, or can I make a kinetic typography video as well? Would digital wallpaper designs also count as one studio work? And for our process portfolio is it necessary to have been inspired by an artist? We currently don't have a VA teacher and we're only done with two studio works so far, so I could really use the help. Thanks!

Hello! I am currently taking Film HL and have begun working on my Film IS. I already have a topic in mind, as well as which films I could use as my main four, however there is a television series that I feel fits with my topic perfectly and could be analyze in much depth. Each episode is standalone, so I was wondering whether I could only analyze one episode as it is the only one that is related. Since Film Presentations in the past have included television series such as Breaking Bad, I don't see why it would be a major issue as I will also discuss films as well, however my teacher has been reluctant. Does anyone know for sure whether this is allowed or not? Thanks!

Don't do French Farce for your research presentation. I did verbal humour for french farce and it was extremely hard for me to find primary research, let alone secondary... Wikipedia doesn't even have a dedicated article for french farce and I strongly recommend you to choose other types of theatre such as Noh or Beijing Opera. Although finally I got a predicted of 6 for the research presentation I wasted a significant amount of time trying to research on it. Don't do French Farce.

So I wish to take two subjects in the Arts (Theatre and Film) but apparently I can't take two arts subjects? Also, do I need to do examinations for either of these subjects? Apparently I don't for Theatre but I'm not sure for film. Also, I will be doing the Film course online. I am asking because I am planning on moving to a new school next year for my second year of IB, and the school told me that my subjects will be quite difficult to catch up (Physics HL, chem SL, bio HL, english HL and spanish SL, maths SL) BUT possible if I am willing to put in a lot more work! However... -English we are doing different books so I will just need to suck it up and study theirs. -M…

Hello, I'm currently in IB diploma year 2. I take English A SL, Arabic BHL , chemistry HL, psychology SL, economics HL, and math SL. I do really good on all my subjects especially psychology, except economics HL I do bad at it! And I think the reason to that is that I don't just think that the teacher is bad , I HATE the subject itself and what we take. I was think to switching to visual arts HL from economics because I'm so sick of it and the teacher. If I switch it's going to be self study because my school doesn't offer it yet and I'm in year 2 IB so it will be limited time. But art is what I really love and am passionate about it. I'm also really talented in painting…

Hello everyone, I am really struggling to find someone with decent notes on the analysis of the prescribed works for the music exam. My teacher did not give us a lot of material and on internet I found only 1 analysis about them. Do you have something that your teachers gave you which might be very useful?

Hey guys, I'm in the middle of my first year (yr 11) and I'm doing Visual Arts HL. It's not that I've had a hard time choosing a topic, but whenever I suggest something to my teacher, they always say something discouraging which makes me reconsider. I've thought of plenty of ideas, which include: - Human nature. (combining elements of humanity with elements of nature) - Corruption. (looking at different mental and social issues mainly in the form of expressionism) - What a girl wants. (looking inside a girl's mind, comparing fantasy to reality) - Looking at how music influences art. I was going to get a bunch of songs and let them influence my ar…

Hello everyone, My name is Julian and I am currentry doing my IB. I have now finished my first year and I am currently on my summer break. I want to take this time to start working on my extended essay but I am really struggling with my subject. I have chosen to do it in art, I dont have a question yet but I thought I could talk about how different artist have deformed the human figure through out the years and what effects that has had or why people like that kind of art. I am not sure this is a good topic so I want to hear your opinions and maybe ideas on how I could make this better. Thanks in advance for your help.

I play violin and piano at LMus and AMus (diploma levels) and want to do Music HL. How does playing 2 instruments work in the solo performance assessment? Will I have to perform both instruments in 20 mins or will I get 40 mins instead? Also, would it be better for me to perform both instruments pretty well, compared to me really perfecting one of the instruments (i.e. the violin) and making the recital amazing? Thank you for your help!

HELLO So I have some questions about the Independent Study (Documentary script) for HL film. I am interested in dystopian films, but unsure how to structure my thesis. I would like to focus on film theory rather than history, but am unsure if I need to be super specific (e.g. the use of lighting to highlight the societal fears of artificial intelligence in dystopian films) or something more general (e.g. the use of cinematic techniques to create meaning in dystopian films) Thanks!

I don't really know much about the theatre works and performing, but my teacher told me it's fine. Also, is IB theatre difficult to get a 6 or 7?

Hey all! I am currently done with my film for my IB production portfolio. I am worried about the blood levels in my film. The guide says that blood cannot dwell, but depends on to what extent they mean by 'dwell'. Will they actually disqualify my IB diploma if there were scenes with a lot of blood? Please help ASAP so I could at least re-shoot.

Hey! I hope this is where this post goes... lol I'm in Music SL so I'm not toooo worried about this exam, but I was wondering from past music people how you guys studied/practiced for the music exam? Not many people past last year at my school... I was just curious how the rest of the world did. I also know that the structure of the music exam has changed sort of slightly to our advantages. Are the sections weighted differently? Should I focus more on Section B rather than Section A because Section B has more marks? What tips should I keep in mind? How goes the timing? If there are any resources for the prescribed works that would be cool to to share, please! Also, if the…

I created workbook pages for various other art projects that I never followed through with due to limited supplies, models, and time. My question is can I submit workbook pages for art projects that I am not submitting or do I have to submit the workbook pages that directly correspond to the works I would be submitting?

I'm really confused because my teacher keeps saying that we need 12-18 studio works for HL, but i asked another HL student at a different school and she said we only need around 8 or 9. On this website: http://www.thinkib.n...8247/art-making it says that there are not a required number of works but rather that there are a required number of examples of EVIDENCE of work, which is where the 12-18 number comes in. I'm really confused because my teacher keeps saying its 12-18 pieces but I feel like I can't trust it because this is the first year that my school is doing the IB and all the teachers are super inexperienced... and the other HL student I asked is going to UWC …

Dear Fellow Readers, Currently i'm still in my first year of IB and was wondering to have some thoughts and opinions for my Visual Arts theme. Currently i'm stuck on the problem of weather to have a lot of mixed media pieces (paintings, Portraits, 3D, sculpture etc.) Here is the question that i am asking, i'm wondering weather i can have all my pieces of art be sculptures or should it be better to have a diversity of media. FYI currently I am planning to go and study Architecture for University thus the reason of having the majority of my pieces to be 3D. I just want your thoughts and opinions of what you think of ideas and if it is better for diversity. I would also l…

I'm doing my EE in Art and my teacher has said that my research question is not clear enough. I'm really interested in how people view art and how they express their emotions through art. I'm looking into the language of art and artistic expression and I was thinking something along the lines of "To what extent have the restrictions of artistic expression changed the language of art?" I don't know if this is clear enough though.

Hey all. Im currently in my first year in DP, and will be testing in Music SL in a couple months. For my IA I am doing solo performance on the Violin (Canzonetta, Summer from Four Seasons) and Piano (moonlight sonata first movement). I will be recording my songs live in a week, and I am getting a little nervous on how strict the IB Music examiners are when it comes to the solo performance. Music is really subjective, and I'm worried that the examiner I get will be really strict. The criteria I am worried about is C and D (communication, and understanding of style), because I don't really know how it's possible to grade someone on how they understand the style of music... …

I've recently found out that there is a new curriculum for IB Visual Arts, with first examinations taking place in 2016, so this only effects people starting the course this year. The new syllabus can be found here and blog posts explaining the new curriculum can be found here and here. Even though I only started the course in August I was really familiar with old syllabus: the A/B options and the IWB/studio work as the assessed components. So I'm a little caught off guard with this change! What are your thoughts? Do you think this change is for the better or the worse? Any advice on how I should change my approach to the course in order to receive a good score?

Hi guys! I'm taking up IB Visual Art as part of my SL and we were asked to submit an artwork exploring the theme of poverty. Mine was on people's ignorance on the rampant case of poverty in my motherland. What I'm finding really hard is to show through my artwork this very side of the society. Do you have any idea or an art inspiration that could help me? My mind's thirsty for some creative juices T.T/ Thank you!

I've already done my grade 5 theory exams but they are absolutely no help for me for IB Listening when analysing scores (I have never done this before)... I could really use some help on how I'm supposed to apply the things learnt into context and how am I supposed to answer those tedious questions I really don't get it... Basically my IB score is really a 3 balanced by a Level 7 for performing LOL Please do give me some tips etc really don't know how to deal with ib music T^T Thanks!

Hello, everyone! I think that for the most part, the IB program is great and it's beneficial to have to take six subjects; one from each group. However, something that bothers me is that taking a subject from the arts is not required. It seems like the ultimate gesture, even by the IB, that the arts are worth less than other subjects. Maybe to an extent you can't study for them in the same way as other subjects, but I think they should be valued the same as other subjects. How can the IB call themselves fully rounded if an art isn't required? What do you guys think of this? Do you think it's right that an art isn't required? How do you think people would take it if an…

Hey All, I am in Music SL, testing in about two months. I am trying to work on my MLI and considering that it is due to 2 weeks, I am definitely cramming.
