Hi. My teacher has just given me some music from different cultures at the last minute (well, week). I can do some analysis with musical and structural features, but how do I analyze the context of songs? What are some significant features of music from different time periods? Also, I noticed that a couple of the past tests ask what places certain pieces in the Baroque era (or whatever musical period they come from). How do I answer this? Thanks.

Hellooo, there isn't a lot related to IB Film on here I expected there to be quite a few people discussing the Films that have been prescribed. My teacher chose The Night of the Hunter, A Separation and The Godfather. Have any of you chosen yours yet? I'm doing a Separation (Also was anyone else excited by the fact that Toy Story 2 was on the list? Cause I was..)

Hi, guys, So due to botched scheduling, I'm going to be taking IB Music Performance SL next year. The problem is, no matter where I search (including my school's course book), I can't seem to find any real details as to what the course covers. Can anyone who has taken it or is taking it tell me what you've done (or what your experience has been)? Thank you!

For my musical links investigation in music i'm comparing Syrinx by Debussy and a Korean Daegeum (instrument much like a shakuhachi) piece. My teacher thinks that the styles or 'musical genres' that they come under are too similar to get me good marks in the choice of pieces and cultures marking criteria as they are both solo flute type instruments and yet they are quite different in terms of style of writing and historical context. Will these two cultures be too similar to analyse? How can i tell how 'distinct' these two cultures are as the IB syllabus makes it quite ambiguous.

Hi everyone, I was wondering if someone could explain how you put in the extra supporting documents in for your PPP. Am I allowed to draw out staging and lighting or must I find it online. And if I do draw it, am i required to type up the explanation or am I allowed to write it? Also what sort of things would you suggest using as supporting materials. I'm struggling a lot with this project and it's due tomorrow so I'm a little nervous. Anyway, thanks for your help!

So I'm planning on taking HL Theater next year, which I'm excited for but I have a couple concerns. I know the arts are often incredibly time consuming so how time consuming is Theater? Keeping in mind that I really really need a 7 in the course. If I didn't take Theater I would take HL Psychology. Thanks!

Hey guys, i'm in a bit of a dilemma here. Should I take IB music or should I continue taking my IB History? History is simply an interest, a subject that i've taken to please my parents coupled with a bit of self-interest but music is my passion. I'm just wondering whether universities (specfu will look down upon music as an "easy" (What rubbish!) subject as opposed to history... Could somebody offer their opinions on this little problem? Thank you in advance!

Hello, I have to present a project for my IPP in one of these days. I discussed with my professor the topic of my IPP and he recommended me to work with Anne Bogart's Viewpoints and so I decided to create a workshop about it. However, I have been having trouble finding information and exercises for my classmates in order to run with the workshop. Has anyone done a workshop for their IPP? How did it go? Any recommendations? Thanks!

When you are working on your Research Investigation, which of the following is the recommended sequence to formulating your question? a) Find a play and then research the practice that play is from, and then formulate a question b) Start with the practice, research it in depth, find an aspect that there are lots of sources on, and interests you, then find a play that implements that aspect c) Start with an aspect, for example masks, and then find a play and research a practice that matches?

My Theatre SL class is doing our PPPs this month. As part of my supporting material I have costume designs for my characters. To add some authenticity I want to add fabric swatches to show what the costume would be made from. I was wondering if there is a specific way that IB wants us to attach fabric to the paper or if they would prefer us not to add actual textiles? I have asked my teacher but since this this is her first year teaching IB she is unsure about IB's specific preferences. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

For the stylistic compositions in HL music, how exactly am I supposed to do them? I working on the 18th century string quartet one right now. I took the 1st 20 measures (1st violin only) of a minuet from a Haydn quartet. It says I need to include a modulation. Do I compose the other 3 parts in the style of the piece, or with my own style? Also, would it be good or bad to listen to a recording of the piece? I don't want to hear the other parts and write them like how Haydn did? Any suggestions for the stylistic compositions in general would be much appreciated!

My teacher gave me several examples of written essays and the questions that go with them, but I don't know what the unidentified scores are. It's from the May 2008 exam year. I can't find the audio file on the IB website anywhere. Does anyone know where I can find them? My teacher also gave me the CD and the questions from May 2009, but I have no sample essays from that year. Where can I find those? The IB website only went back to 2011. Thanks.

I'm just wondering.... Is it normal to have just one year of IB Art? I heard that other IB schools have their Art for two years. In our school, we only have 1 year of IB Art while we had MYP Art in our sophomore year. I'm a junior and I'm already testing for IB for two of my classes (Math Studies II SL and Art SL, I know that having one year of Math Studies is normal because I'm in SL but I haven't heard anything of having just one year of Art). I'm done with all the work that I had to do except for my IWB but I'm still wondering why we had just one year of Art instead of two... is it because of the fact I'm in SL?

IB Visual Arts HL - Can I change my theme?

So, I'm taking Visual Arts HL and I chose Teenage Rebellion as my theme (IB One). I begin my last year of school (IB Two) on March 3rd (calender is different here). However, I think my theme is a little too vague and I ran out of ideas for my next 7 paintings (I have 8 so far and I need 15 in total). Is there any possibility that I can change my theme? Let's say changing from Teenage Rebellion to The 7 Deadly Sins (this is just an example)? Or do you have to stick with this theme until you graduate? Please help!

Hi everyone, I didn't know which topic to post this under so I created my own. I have my final exhibition tomorrow ( I didn't choose the essay option ), and I have 9 pieces instead of 12. Do I need to be done with all of my studio work until the exhibition, or can I complete the remaining 3 after it? I am stressing out. I hate rushing through my pieces. An answer will be much appreciated.

I have had experience with a violin for about 2 years, and I can play music. However, I haven't played in 2 years since there is no space for an elective at my high school. Anyways, I can read music fairly well, but for IB music do I have to know how to play very well? (Vibratos) Film, Art, and Theatre are the other options but I dont have the passion for them, and I can take Physics as an alternative.

I'm taking visual arts option A HL, and i'm a senior so it's my last year, & it's almost over. So, I had a theme at the beginning of the year but a month ago I decided that I don't want to have a specific theme as it limited me a lot & eventually I found myself struggling to design new pieces. my question is, does not having a theme make your grade lower? Cause my art teacher constantly tells us to revolve our pieces around one topic so we can make all of them relate together at the end, but i find it really hard to have a theme & try to connect them all.

Hi, I'm going to take music sl next year and i have a few questions about the solo performance part. My instrument is the piano. 1. When is the earliest that i can do my solo performance on? Does it have a set date like the exam or can i do it whenever i want. 2. What kind/genre of music should i play and if i'm playing a piece with more than one movement do i have to play them all? 3. I've completed my grade 10 in RCM and i got 70% so if I play as well as i did for the RCM how many points would i get? 4. Does anyone know or heard about someone who got a 7 in music sl? Thanks a lot for your help

Hey everyone, I'm an option B visual arts student and I have the minimum amount of pieces which is 8 (not including the final picture). My teacher is telling me that there's no way I can get a 7 or even 6 (despite the fact that most of them got 7s and 6s) with just those 8 and the more pieces I have, the more variety the examiners see. How true is this, considering the fact that my pieces already show a lot of variety and each of them uses different mediums? Thanksss

So my Theatre teacher is really of no help to the IB students at my school; and after she gave us the wrong instructions twice, I don't trust her judgment on the assessments. The trouble I'm having is I keep changing my paper to more of a literary than what is described by the instructions. I have chosen Top Girls, which is a historical drama and political satire. I have chosen my topic to be something on the lines of how I would plan the visual design of Top Girls in a way which would show the universal applications to the theme and make it an effective piece of satire. Does this seem like a reliable topic? EDIT: After reading more, I realized that I was still taking…

Hello my fellow IBers, My teacher selected Toy Story 2 for one of the possibilities for our film presentation. Being that I am a Disney nut and Toy Story is my favorite series, I would really like to do this one. However, I am a bit tentative because it is the first animation film (so I've heard) that IB has selected. Anyone have any tips for how I should approach this topic? Thanks!

IB Theatre SL- IPP Question
by Guest- 2 replies

I'm taking IB Theatre SL right now, and I'm wondering whether my idea for the IPP meets the regulations. My teacher isn't too sure but I think it works, so I'm asking for a second (and third, and fourth, ect...) opinion! I would like to write an original script. I have contacted a few playwrights in my area who would be willing to provide instruction and feedback through the writing process. However, organizing a rehearsed, complete performance of this script isn't really a practical option. Are there any alternatives to a production of an original script that would be acceptable as a form of performance?

Hey I have my IPP performance due in a week. I'm SL however I decided to create my own script and have actors perform it out. The only question for me is "How do I go on and write about that for 2000 words?" I know that it's about the Process of the how the script was created. I know I can talk about how and what motivated me to create these ideas however I cannot see myself going on for 2000 words on it. Please help me!!!!

In DESPERATE need for project ideas! I know it can be anything so as long as it befits my theme, but I'm having a creative block and can't come up with something.... My theme is Dreams, and the teacher wants us to produce an installation piece. And that, is my problem. I'm perfectly fine with painting and coming up with new ideas to paint, but when it comes to installation I always reach a dead end. On top of that, final submission of all work is due 28/2 , and I have two more projects I need to complete. I joined VA later in the year that's why I'm late. Any help would be appreciated :/

I am a former IB student, and now an administrator at an art school in Florence, Italy. We have been working with the International School of Florence to put together a summer program focused on helping the students at the school here, but we also want to invite students from around the world (max 15). http://www.theflorenceartstudio.com/BLOG/ibvasummer The point of the program is to give students the opportunity to hone their technical skills (re: DRAW!) at a time when they are not stressed out with other school obligations or activities. Hi, so I am confused on my Film Independent Study topic. I just wanted to know whether this would be a good topic to research on: "How the usage of lighting, cinematography, and mise-en-scene helps portray the balance of power in mafia genre films". I picked two films, "The Godfather" and "City of God" (foreign). If the topic is good, could you please give me any tips? (for example, overall tips on writing the independent study?) Also, do I need to modify the topic question at all? Thanks in advance.

Hello, I am starting my second year of IB in march. I am suffocated with IB art HL. I choose it because it was the only artistic option we have in my school and because I love visiting museums, talkling with artists, admirating it. Also because I love graphic design. The problem is the following: Last year I started really motivated and then with all the work of different subjects I started desmotivating. Also, the fact that my handwriting is horrible and I am awful drawing. So, I know I have good ideas, I know I visited a lot of places with art (I am from Uruguay and I´ve been in NYC where there is a lot of arts) I have been studying things relationed to visual arts (fil…

I am an HL student (option A) A few months ago, I started off with the topic "Hindu Architecture in India". In future, I intend to take up architecture, and I had chosen this theme to help me create a stronger portfolio for my future... Hey, so while working on my 4th project (which is a self portrait) I experienced an artist's block of sorts. I do have a clear idea on what my final sketch should be, but i was wondering on what research i should be doing on the way. would it be helpful to research the evolution of the portrait? (though i doubt it experienced any sort of dramatic evolution), or should I research portraits in different cultures? sidenote: the self portrait won't represent my physical appearance, and it won't be realistic (more like abstract/cubism/neoplasticism- leaning more towards neoplasticism) Can you guys recommend any artists?

Okay, just started my junior year of the IB program. I am supposed to turn in the first 10 pages by tomorrow and I only have the first 5 done(autobiography). I've been so preoccupied with other homework, I completely forgot about art. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do for the Idea research, cultural research, artist of influence and critical analysis. Mostly the idea research. Am I supposed to be focusing on an idea for my piece or like an idea of art form that I will be doing my piece in(cubism, surrealism)??? If I have the idea research down, I feel like the rest will come easier. And how long does it usually take you guys to do all of this? Please help!

Hi, i started IB late, so Im choosing my art theme now. I am interested in architecture and engineering but I want to choose something that interests me. I was thinking to choose steam punk as my theme and do several different pieces- on the fashion, buildings (for architecture) , robots and engines, etc. but im kind of worried that I wont be able to develop them e.g. The colours may all be similar as steampunk colours tend to be reds, browns, brassy not very bright. I was also planning on doing some texture work and may even build a 3d robot model.
