Bonjour tout le monde, I am in my first year of IB, seventh week to be exact and I am struggling in French SL. I have done French for a few years and did really well but I am now struggling because of the massive jump in level. I was hoping that if anyone had any good tips for studying French, good vocab, sites to go on or even offer to be a french buddy ( send French emails to eachother once a week, if would be good if you were fluent in french or very good at it) they would comment bellow. Any help would be highly helpful as I am determined to gain a 6 in French. Je vous adresse mon très amical souvenir Zoe Faith

Hey, So, with the submission with my school's IB course registration deadline nearing, I've been faced with a dilemma. I have been taking Japanese at school for 4 years now and I am quite mediocre at it and have always been. Considering that, I am currently leaning towards the Ab Initio Spanish side more than the SL Japanese. I think starting from the beginning would be slightly easier than catching up on the 4 years' worth of work and improving more for the level of fluency that IB may require. What are you opinions, or perhaps experiences, on this matter? Keeping in mind that I wish to aim for a 7.

Hi, I'm going to be starting SL French B this September. I just wanted to know how hard is it to get a good grade, such as a 6 or even a 7? I've been taking French since Grade 4, but I completely suck at it. I can read, but cannot understand what I read. I can barely write French. In terms of speaking, I am almost zero. When others speak to me in French, I can barely understand them. So, as you can see, in terms of reading, writing, understanding, and speaking French I'm not that good. That's why I'm a bit worried. Thanks.

Basically, I got my IB results and for german B SL I received a 5. paper 1 - 5 paper 2 - 6 Oral - 6 Written Assignment - 3 My written assignment grade seems very odd to me as throughout the year I never received a grade lower than a 5. I worked a lot on this assignemtn and 3 seems to be impossible My teacher is also very surprised as I am because I received the lowest grade for my written assignment in my class. I really tried to convince my IBC to get the IAs remoderated but she told me that I am the only one with this low grade and therefore she won't send off all the IAs. I am literally crying because everyone is so helpless

Hi, So for WA in Spanish ab initio, our teacher wants us to do a comparative study on a certain topic between Indian and Hispanic cultures. Topics taken by others are like festivals(Holi vs Tomatina), food(Samosa vs Empanadas) but I am absolutely clueless. Can someone suggest something interesting with similarities as well as differences?

Hey Guys, I am going to start IB1 this coming September. I have been studying in Canada since grade 7 in a boarding school and I am from Venezuela (so Spanish is my first language). Unfortunately, my school does not offer Spanish A, but they do offer spanish HL. I am very interested in learning Mandarin since I been to China and had people taught me around 30 words and grammar before I even thought of taking Ab Initio Mandarin, I know the very basics and love learning the language. Since I want to apply for Engineering I have a really difficult IB course selection and I thought it would be easier to just do Spanish HL, get a 7, and change a harder course from HL to …

About the written assignment for language B HL, are "easier to read" (but still in the foreign language) versions of original texts allowed (eg: a children's edition of "Dream of the Red Chamber")? If not, what are the consequences of using one for the written assignment?

I have a problem with reading comprehension and writing. I'm native born Canadian, and grew up in a family with a french speaking father. I'm fluent in speaking french. I can talk with almost anyone about any topic, I just need half a second to adjust to accents. However, I have a huge problem with comprehension and writing because I never learned how to do this…. Grade 10 was my first year of french classes, and if it wasn't for my 7 in Oral, than I would have done terribly… Does anyone have any tips, techniques, or advice to get better at the reading comprehension as well as my writing skills? I'm hoping for a 7 in my final exams, at least that's what I'm aiming for. …

I need your opinion on whether I should learn Mandarin or French. I want to learn Mandarin more than I want to learn French, because it is way more useful, but French is way easier. The problem with Mandarin is the difficulty, especially the letters/script/characters, when I look at Chinese letters it just looks ridiculously hard, memorizing them is basically like looking into the night sky and trying to memorize specific patterns of stars, and freaking hundreds of them!?!?!? So what do you guys think? Take an easier language, and probably get a better grade, but waste two years that I could have spent learning a more useful language? Or take a harder language, probably g…

Hey guys, so I have 3 options for my language other than English (I'll be doing A Lit). 1) I can either self teach myself my mother tongue, Dhivehi, at first language level (the school I will go to facilitates that it seems). 2) I could do French B 3) I could do Mandarin a.b. I'm not sure what to go with, and I was hoping you guys could advise me. I feel like ruling out the self taught option because being the only one studying it in my school and by myself, it seems boring. But at the same time it'd let me obtain the bilingual diploma. Is it worth more than a regular diploma? Are self-taught courses viewed well? The main problem is it doesn't seem as useful to have a q…

I`m starting IB in a little over a year and I was wondering if it was a good idea to spend my free time learning a new language, and then take it ab inito. I would just pretend I have never studied the language before, and then BOOM! on the test I would get a 7, I would probably be ahead of the class for 6 months or something, at least. I just think it would be a good idea to lighten the heavy workload of IB a little bit. Would this even work?

I have looked at all the other subject grade boundaries and i have found that all language B subjects have higher grade boundaries then other groups and i was wondering why this is? Because i do German and it is the subject i perform worst in but if my mark was in any other subject then i would be getting a 6 but i German I'm getting a 5. for example IB May 2013 exams the german grade boundaries for SL is; 1: 0 - 13% 2: 14 - 27% 3: 28 - 42% 4: 43 - 56% 5: 57 - 70% 6: 71 - 85% 7: 86%+ whilst the grade boundaries for something like chemistry SL is 1: 0 - 13% 2: 14 - 25% 3: 26 - 37% 4: 38 - 49% 5: 50 - 61% 6: 62 - 73% 7: 74%+ Source http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthr…

http://www.duolingo.com/ I`ve used this website to learn Spanish aside from what I learn at school and it is awesome. Basically it is divided into different categories in a tree/branch thingy. You have to finish Basics 1 and 2 to advance to the next 1 or to categories, the categories include Animals, Colors, Verbs, Adverbs, Adjectives, Professions, Household etc. In each category you have to translate a sentence English->Foreign language and vice versa including the words you are supposed to learn in the category (hover over them to see the translation) and words from previous categories you also have to listen to foreign language audio and write what you hear. Check …

Word Limit Exceed in Paper 2

Hello, I hope your exams went well. Today I took French B SL exam, paper 1 and paper 2. Since 24 hours is not passed, I am not gonna discuss about the content of the exam! Anyway. I have a concerns for the exam because I exceeded the 250-400 word limit in paper 2. I counted the word in the last 10 minute of the exam and I exceeded about 80-100 words. I am worried of what is going to happen to my exam grade. Are the examinators going to take lots of points? or would they take 1-2 marks off from the paper 2? I am extremely worried about the results. I suck at French and need to maximize my grades on paper 1 and 2. Thank you

Hi, I'm studying Spanish Ab Initio, and I'm just coming to the end of the first year of the IB. My problem is that I don't really feel like I've learnt nearly enough Spanish to do well in my exams next year. I've started using Duolingo, but it seems to be a ridiculously slow process and it doesn't cover everything I need to do. The other people in my class seem to pick up the spanish much faster than I do, and I feel like I'm getting left behind. Is there anything I can do to catch up on my Spanish and make sure I'm working towards doing well in my exams next year? I'd like a 6 if possible, but at the moment that feels like a very long way off! Thanks, Joe

I have been practicing for the french ab initio paper 2 exam for Friday by doing past papers. I discovered they give you a multitude of text types and one of the criteria of the rubric is how well you follow the conventions of the text type. Does anyone have a list of text types that the IB expects you to know and can anyone add to the conventions of each text type? I don't know if there is a list in the syllabus or anything but I know they have asked for speeches, letters (formal and informal), brochures and journal entries in past papers. Good Luck to everyone on both papers.

So recently I happened to stumble upon the idea of French literary tenses. I've been researching/learning them for the past couple of days, but am still unsure as to exactly when and how to use them. Mostly, I'm just wondering what text types one would use them with. I'm thinking short stories and articles...? Also, any advice you have to using them, etc, would be much appreciated

I'm in Pre-IB at the moment, so I'm not exactly up-to-date with IB changes. I was wondering if IB took out Language A2 and left just Language B and ab. By the time I get to IB I will have about 11 years of experience of Spanish. Is that going to make HL Spanish B really easy for me, or have they ramped up the difficulty (if they did get rid of Language A2)? Thanks

Hi, So I have few questions about paper 2. How many essay questions do I get? I have heard that syllabus has changed ? Is it four topics now ? And lets say I wrote an answer in the right format but I had misunderstood what the content should be about. Can I still get points for language ( vocal, grammar ect. ) and format and pass the paper ? Or would I automatically get 0?

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not we are going to get an answer booklet separate from the question booklet for English B (as we now do for the other exams). If not: For those true or false questions, if I mark true instead of false for example, how do I correct it? There is no space. Also, what do we do if we run out of space in the question/answer booklet? Any answer would be really appreciated! I keep on running out of space, and marking the wrong answers out of excitement

Hey! So I was just wondering what the percentages for each of the language B requirements are. For example, on the Orals done in class, (Watching the movie & discussing it, class debate, etc) I got a 5 on each of those. On the practice paper 1 I got a 5 and the practice paper 2 I got a 3. (I know those two practices don't count) I don't know what I got on my actual oral (The one where you study a picture for 15min and then talk about it for 3-4 min and have a discussion on it with your teacher for another 6-7min) but I know for a fact I bombed it. I got in the room, the teacher asked if I was ready, I went to take a deep breathe to calm my nerves and halfway through m…

Hi guys, So I'm taking French ab initio and it's been quite tough for me on the grammar part, especially the tenses. I'm okay with present and passe compose, but that's like really all that I'm sure about. The rest...are just a blur, not to mention irregular verbs! On top of that there are still stuff like adjectives, pronouns and so on so I'm super overwhelmed especially due to the masculine/feminine word differences. What I would like to ask is if in the actual exams, do they ask a lot of tenses stuff and require us to learn all of the different ways of conjugations, and irregular verbs as well? Does anyone have a list of common verbs/vocab that will come out in exams …

Hey guys, So I've taken an online class for Spanish Ab Nitio. However, I feel myself to be struggling a bit. Its not that I'm behind or anything, but personally, I feel that I'm not on the right course for success during the exam time. I feel myself to be too dependent on a dictionary, and that might be detrimental to my learning process. I'm getting good grades (great actually), but I feel that I'm not really "learning" too much. Could you guys advice me on some things I should do to better learn the language? Should I download Rosetta Stone and do that? Also, is Spanish Ab Nitio hard (like, impossibly hard?). Or am I simply feeling the jitters of learning a new language…

I have it in two days, and I am so nervous for it.... Any tips on how to prepare for it, and how to organize my actual presentation? As a little refresher to anyone that hasn't taken it yet for this year, you choose one picture out of a set of two. You then get 15 minutes to prepare, and you then go straight into a room with a recorder to speak about it for 3-4 minutes, after this the teacher asks you some questions for a few minutes. We have been practicing these for the past week in school, but I just always seem to repeat my same ideas for the entire 3 minutes :/.
