I was wondering, how many tenses are we meant to know by the end of our first year of IB? Can someone give me a list of tenses please? Also it'd be great if you also mentioned when or where they're used? Thanks

So it's already been 2 terms and all we've done so far is vocab about various issues (e.g. francophone countries, reality tv etc...) In terms of our final exams, what are we actually expected to know?? Because our teacher thinks we're fluent so I don't know if we're learning the stuff we're meant to! The tenses we know so far are: present, passé composé imparfait subjunctive future conditional Thanks for any replies in advance, any reply would really help!!!

Hey! I'm thinking of self-studying Japanese B SL because although I took Spanish ab initio this year, I found myself really missing having Japanese. Like, really. I've never missed a class that much in my life. So I wanted to take the matter into my own hands. My school doesn't offer Japanese B as a class (not enough people), so I want to self-study it. I would have to do the SL course in one year, mostly on my own, so I was wondering if anyone knows just how difficult it is. If you can put it into JLPT terms, that would be awesome! It's so much easier to find JLPT resources online than IB.... I speak Mandarin, so the part that trips up a lot of Japanese students, …

So, my teacher mostly followed the provincial curriculum instead of the IB curriculum for the past two years so I haven't a clue what's gonna be on the Paper 2. I've seen some past exams, but I believe that she said something like that the paper has changed this year and we have to write two composition instead of one? Is this true? Also, while I'm aware that we need to memorize the formats, is there anything else we need to know?

Hi everyone, The SL French exam is in a couple of days, however my French vocabulary is very poor. Are there any tips that you could give me on how to score a decent grade on paper 2 even for someone like me. Furthermore, if I come across a word that I want to use, but can't think of the French word for it (and I don't know any French words for its synonyms either), what should I do? Thanks a lot!

Hi guys, first post here, sorry, etc etc. I'm nearing the end of my first year of the IB diploma. Mocks are in a month. My current grades are: Maths HL - 7 Physics HL - 6/7 Business HL - 7 English lang/lit SL - 6 Chemistry SL - 4 French SL - 3 Core (TOK/EE)- 2 I'm interested in applying to Oxford/Cambridge, but am held back by a level 3 at French. The requirement for application is at least all 6s (and I'm hoping for 777 at HL). I have never been good at french, have had multiple tutors, but just don't *get* it. I haven't tried enough to actually improve myself, but now that everything is so .. real, so soon, I want to work as much as possible on French. M…

Hi guys, Last month I started the IB, and one of the subjects I'm taking is SL French B. So far this is my hardest subject and I can see this turning into a nightmare; I find it harder than all of my HL subjects even. I was thinking about switching out of it to another language B, but the only other option is Spanish, which I have no experience in whatsoever. In SL French B, so far we've been reading texts and answering questions on it, which is for paper 1 I believe. Also, we've been practicing writing paragraphs in French, which I believe is for paper 2. Other than the practices for these papers, we've been looking at pictures and talking in French about them, …

Hey guys! …

So it just hit me how much of the IB French B course is centred around vocab. I know that we come across vocab as we get further into the course etc. etc.. but do you guys think it's a good idea to actually just read the French dictionary? French comprehensions are really hard for me, and i have to look up every third word. Is reading the dictionary a good idea? Thanks everyone!

So, seeing as I am studying for my French Ab test right now, I thought why not make this a place where we can like put up verbs, conjugate them and help each other out. I'm putting up some basic ones right now because I don't have much time: Etre- Je suis Tu es Il/Elle/On est Nous Sommes Vous etes Ils/Elles ont Faire: Je fais Tu fais Il/Elle fait Nous faisons Vous faites Ils/Elles font Avoir: J'ai Tu as Il/elle a Nous avons Vous Avez Ils/Elles sont Please add more to this list, whichever level of French you are doing, and please let me know if I have incorrectly conjugated/spelled any of the ones I have done. Sooo apparently I write the things you can only say verbally...and that gave me a bad mark on a mock paper 2 exam. Since our teacher was really bad, I/we have no idea what's the proper writing style. I know you can't say il y a but that's about it.... where can I find easy to understand resorces on this? Also because it's getting close to exam time, should I remember a small list (3-9) of relatively simple connectors and stuff to use frequently (tant que, c'est-a-dire, pourtant) or would it be more beneficial to remember fewer but more complicated things? (like 1-3 WOW phrases) And, as last resort, are fancy verbs more important or fancy connectors? I'm busy remembe…

I am in my second year of Spanish AB and am feeling completely overwhelmed by all the different verbs, tenses and possibilities of questions! I am wondering if anyone has some good study tips that helped them work on revising the verbs or on whether there were things they thought they could cut out/ don't need to learn. Really need help and fast as exams are coming up soon! (but in Australia so finals aren't until Nov) Also if you are from the Sydney Australia area and know of a good tutor, or even an online/skype one from any place? Thanks

This question is in regards to the Language Ab Initio written assignment for 2015. What does the following question mean? Does it require me to give a reason for the similarities and another reason for the differences? or? "Why do you think these cultural similarities/differences exist?" I'm confused because in the mark scheme it says "At least one reason why these cultural differences and similarities exist has been identified and explained" HELP PLS. Thank you.

Hey, I'm nearly halfway through IB1, and we have to pick our HLs soon and I was thinking about doing French. So far I've done fairly well, but not amazingly, so any advice on improving or general tips would be great. Particularly I was hoping for recommendations with french music, books, movies etc. Also, anyone in HL who can give reasons why/why not to do it, or any advice would be super helpful. Thanks!

Okey, so I have been thinking back and forth for bit and I really do not know what to do. I have six subjects picked out to take when starting DP and I am considering a seventh, this to be Spanish AB. This year (MYP5) I've been studying Spanish AB and I've found it quite easy. Therefore I am considering taking it next year, because I feel like it would not hurt. But how large is the difference between the AB in MYP5 and AB SL in DP?

Hey guys, Can anyone give me a huge help on this? I'm taking English B HL and my teacher is making me very confused. I know that for Paper 2 we have to write different text types, but I'm not sure exactly how to write them -format- He has shown different formats for the text types but they all seem so similar between one another. Do you know where I can find sample formats or sample texts of every type? Introduction to speech, letters, proposals, journal entries, articles, blogs, etc... It would really help me out!

I just had my oral yesterday and I am worried that I did really bad. First, I feel like I used too many simple structures and made some grammar and spelling mistakes. Also, one time, when I tried to form a bit more advanced sentence, my mind went blank so I stammered for a few seconds. I thought I was prepared, but I could have done MUCH better. My questions are: Is it common for people to make those mistakes in individual oral? Also, how good does the oral have to be to get... let's say a 5 or more? Thank you.

What were some of the approved writing formats? I wanted to do a letter of some sorts on genetically modified organisms... Is there somewhere I can get a clear template on writing formats cuz we never learned them very well in class and I heard foramt is a large part of criteria. Also, kinda unclear on what im doing T.T Do I just write a letter (if I choose to) like lettre officiel or some other thing and just write?? Do I need to have in-text citations? I don't get what to do with the articles (other and read them to get info to use in the letter)

I am taking Russian language B SL and now we are doing the written assignments, which are 20% of the mark. We have to write a text based on 3 or 4 sources, I have chosen 2 articles and a video, but the teacher says that we must choose sources of different text types and I cannot use 2 articles, however this is not stated in the IB guide and I have not heard of such an obligation. Does such a thing exist? And does the teacher have the rights to ask this from us? I just don't want to replace one of my sources because I have already written a full draft for the assignment and that would mean changing/ rewriting a lot of things.

I started Spanish last year and although I do like learning it and stuff my teacher isn't consistent and we don't talk in lessons like at all. When doing the 'mock' oral in my own time I'm great but then I can use a dictionary and my phone, so it doesn't really count. Can anyone recommend me a website or what tenses should I know for sure or anything? I'm so stressed about it.

Hi all! I have my IOP sometime in February (my teacher hasn't assigned specific dates to us yet) and my proposal is due this Tuesday. The books that I have to choose from are Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Arcadia by Tom Stoppard, and Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese (all in my tags). I'm leaning more towards Frankenstein and Cutting for Stone, and one of my ideas was to analyze the women roles in Frankenstein (like how they are portrayed as passive and their main role is for the advancement of men in the novel) and maybe doing some slam poetry. Any suggestions or better topics would be much appreciated, thanks!

Hello IB Survivors, I was hoping someone who did the Spanish Ab Initio Paper 2 in May 2014 could tell me what types of texts they were asked to write? And what themes were these texts based on? I'm practicing for my upcoming mocks and I was told that practicing the most recent papers will help the most because they tend to change formats and the rest over time. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.
