Menu Exam Tips Data-Analysis Questions Revision Links Exam Tips These are some tips to tackle Biology questions with respect the action verbs. (BTW, this is taken from the Oxford Biology Study Guide pp.178). Before we start with this, you need to know that there are three types of examination questions; - Multiple Choice Questions (Paper 1): You choose the answer from four possible choices. Read them all, eliminate any unwanted answers to narrow them down. Always give answers and never leave questions empty. Leave the hard ones till the end and focus on the straightforward ones. - Structured Questions (Paper 2 + 3): Each question is broken down to sectio…

Since no one seemed to be offering help in biology, I am. If anyone needs help with any topic in Biology, that is Higher and Standard Level. Including the following options: Cells and Energy (for SL, which is aHL topic) Microbes and Biotechnology Further Human Physiology I'm here to help. I enjoy Biology *bio-freak yes* This doesnt take much of my time and I'm doing it willingly. Before you ask a question about a certain topic, make sure it's not listed below. *TOPIC 2 (2.1.9-10)---*Stem cells and therapeutic use* (Second part of the post-scroll down) *TOPIC 2 (2.4.8) -- *Endocytosis and Exocytosis* *TOPIC 2 (2.5) -- *Cell Division (Interphase and Mitosis)* *TOPIC 2 …

I keep getting the same question, about how to do well in HL Biology, so thought I should just put it out in a topic. Remember that this is what I am predicted, not sure what the real one is. From what I have seen these are the important points. 1) TRY to like it..and find interest in it. It really helps. If you do like Biology then that’s a bonus! 2) NEVER EVER go to a lesson before you are certain you understand the things covered in the previous one. A main factor of doing bad is keeping things to just gather up on you, and before an exam you struggle to unerstand soo many things when you should be doing past papers. Do whatever it takes to understand something, trust …

Okay, so I found a bunch of notes I took when my teachers were giving us IA tips and format..etc. Some of the below I had to copy of the board, so you may find these in the books. So, Biology IAs should follow this general format: DESIGN 1)Research Question 2)Hypothesis/Predictions 3)Variables 4)Apparatus 5)Method/procedure DCP 1)Collected data 2)Data processing 3)Data presentation CE 1)Conclusion 2)Evaluation Design Research question: This should be a clear focused question that says exactly what you are investigating. It shouldn't be too long and it must include the dependent and independent variables. Eg. What is the effect of pH on the activity rate of salivary am…

Hey guys, As you may be able to tell from my signature, one of the IB courses that I will be taking during high school happens to be Biology HL. This is completely due to the fact that I want to enter the medical field when I join the workforce. So I finally decided to buy a beginner- level biology workbook from the local bookstore today and I cannot figure out what/ how I'm supposed to study the material. I have a similar workbook for chemistry and I have never encountered any troubles taking notes off that, however it seems as if the biology subject is nothing more than memorization of definitions and diagrams. Chemistry, on the other hand, is all about memorizatio…

Hey Guys, so I'm self-studying Option B and I looked at the info on Bioninja - I'm very intimidated by the Extra content (EC) and I see that what is mentioned in this section is not always present in the guide. So should I pay attention to this section or not? I'm a bit paranoid about missing out on stuff I should know since I'm already kinda struggling with HL Bio. Thanks for your input! xx

Hi all! I'm in the process of choosing an EE topic, but I'm not sure if basing it off a political premise will have a potential negative effect on how it is graded. I know IB examiners are made to be quite impartial, but I wouldn't want to catch one on a bad day where they let their personal beliefs inhibit that quality. Does anyone have any anecdotes about this sort of thing that could tell me whether this is an OK idea? The two prompts I'm currently thinking of would be in Philosophy and ESS: The Confused Ethics of Modern Capitalism; the Promised Fantasy of Prosperity Astronomical Cost; a Plunge Into the Environmental (and/or Biological) Impacts of…

Hi! I need some help from all y'all who are Australians, others are also welcome to answer! So basically, I'll be in yr 11 completing the SACE next year but I am looking to do 1 IB subject; ESS *AS AN EXTRA YR 12 SUBJECT FOR BACKUP*. I don't know if this is a wise choice as a 7 in ESS is scaled to become a 19/20 for SACE not a 20/20. Keep in mind this an extra yr 12 subject on top of yr 12 biology which I will also complete in yr 11. Is this worth it or should I complete yr 12 psychology in yr 11 since I did yr 11 psychology in yr 10. Should I just pick something easy from the SACE yr 11 subjects instead and focus on the ones I need? Th…

As all of you who are taking Environmental Systems and Societies know, the exam is coming up soon. My teacher still has two units to get through. What should I do? The only "review time" we are getting is on random nights, and I cannot go to the study sessions because of other things I have planned (stupid CAS...). I can study by myself, but there are some things I do not fully understand. Also, there are some things we haven't talked about! Thanks to all who respond, Roxy

My teacher scored me a 17/24 on my IA for biology SL. Is that good? Like a 6 or 7? I know in psychology, anything above like a 15 is a 7, but I feel like it's lower for bio. I also realize IB can score it differently than he did, but I am still just curious.

Ok, So my biology internal assessment is a little... made up. I have no idea if it will work, neither does my teacher, so I'm like praying to god it will. What I'm trying to do is look at the effect of ethanol on photosynthesis, doing the test where you get spinach leaf disks and wait till they float to see what rate they produce oxygen at. I'm planning to change the concentration of ethanol in the solution, hoping it makes an effect of some sort. I have 2 questions 1) the density of ethanol is less than water. Do I have to mention this? its about 78% the density of water, is there anyway I can do a calculation to account for the affect that the lower …

Hey guys!, I am in IB1, taking my exams next year. Our teacher mentioned today that with all of the IA changes*, we might be able to do IA's in which we don't actually have to do the experiment, but that we could use online data and just analyse that, as long as we have a very specific question. Does anyone know anything more about this? *I believe in previous years, sciences were required to submit two design, two data collection and two conclusion parts. We now only have to submit one experiment with all three parts. (I think.) Thanks!!

Hello! So I have my exams in May 2016. We were just recently informed that the new syllabus is going to have question in paper 3 ( that have nothing to do with the option chosen) based on the lab experiments we did. I am scared of this, and I would like to know if there is a past paper on this (recently new) so I have an understanding of how they look like.

Hey guys So I've been studying 8.2 and 8.3 (extremely complex and hard, might I add) and there is so much info. I just can't understand what to give importance to (IM using the Oxford book) DO I have to remember ALL diagrams, reactions structures? I understand how Calvin and Krebs work but do I have to remember each and every reaction in this cycle and remember the reduction, oxidation and everything else? Thanks!

It has its greatest density at 4 degrees Im 99% sure that its C, yet some of my notes indicate it could also be A... 10. If 15% of a sample of DNA is thymine, what percentage of the DNA is guanine? For my Biology IAs, I often get marked down in the evaluation section. I wrote down a number of improvements such as increasing the number of trials, decreasing the percentage error, etc. Even though they are considered as valid by my teacher, the marks aren't as good as I expected. What sort of improvements should I write down for my evaluation? I really want to improve my IAs. Thanks!

Hello everyone, so for my bio IA I decided to measure the forced expiratory volume of a person that has asthma and a person that doesn't (same weight, same height, same gender) and made both of them jog between trials (I did 5 trials). Now, I used the loggerpro vernier stuff that collects data by using an spirometer. I am VERY confused on how to find the forced expiratory volume...Say (this is NOT my real data just an example so you guys can sort of explain to me how to find this): Let's say a person did 3 different trials (3 for the person with asthma and 3 for the person that doesn't have astma). In these 3 trials, the vernier pro records flow rate, volume, and time. L…

I am a pre-IB student, and I am currently in the process of writing a biology lab report. However, I am finding the hypothesis really hard to write. I never did a biology report in my previous studies (i just started pre-IB, 5 months after the other students since I spend a semester abroad). I just put this topic under Biology SL/HL since I figured you were the ones who knew the most about it. The topic is enzyme activity (specifically amylase), and so far, I have written following for my hypothesis: "The experiment will show whether or not the enzyme amylase is present in the enzyme solution. If amylase is present, the iodine will react with the starch." I am fully awar…

So you all probably know the method of extracting chlorophyll from leaves using ethanol, but I don't understand why this works. What effect does the alcohol have on the cell membrane? I've done a lot of research on this, but there doesn't seem to be a concrete answer. What I've gotten so far: - The alcohol molecule sits inside the phospholipid bilayer and disrupts the ordering of the phospholipids - Lipids (although I don't know which lipids they're referring to) dissolve in the alcohol, creating holes in the membrane. Also, if the lipids (i'm assuming the hydrocarbon tails) dissolve, then the alcohol wouldn't still be sitting in the bilayer, would it? - S…

Hello guys, The topic for my IA is: Investigate an abiotic factor that effects either rate of seed germination or rate of plant growth. I thought of several topics, but a new one I thought of is how the wavelength of light affects the rate of plant growth. How would I alter the rate of plant growth? Would I just use a filter? Thank you.

I am absolutely horrid at writing up Lab Reports - I'm not sure whether it's because I'm stupid and just can't work out the logical steps, or not spending enough time on them. Our teacher set us a Design IA where about testing the alcoholic content in wine. "M observed that when the fruit, yeast and sugar mixture was kept in a warm place, many bubbles were produced, and the number of these bubbles increased with time. M understood that during this time the wine was becoming alcoholic, so he decided to add more sugar to increase the alcoholic strength of the drink further. However, he was rather disappointed to discover that assign more sugar did not produce more bubbles…

So the teacher let me pick an option since I have a high average. However, I realized later that nobody really takes that option and there isn't much available online. I found some information and made notes from it, but any additional help would be really useful. Is there anyone except me taking this option at all?

I totally screwed myself over last year and missed the 7 that I had in the bag for math, which is really disappointing... but there nothing I can do about that anymore. My goal is to get 43/45. In order to do this, I need to get a 7 in bio. Unfortunately, I've found that SL bio has always been a difficult subject for me. Hi! So I just learned how to extract DNA from strawberries in bio (HL) and thought it might be interesting to find a way to use it in another experiment (or possible IA). Does anyone have any suggestions for IA topics or just for any ways to apply DNA extraction for use in something else? (just for fun ) If possible I'd like to stay away from something like "which food gives the most DNA" (booooring). I also found a DIY gel electrophoresis thing but I'd have to buy a lot of potentially expensive supplies... (although I imagine that's probably kinda inevitable for most of these kinds of experiments?) Thank you!

Hey guys I have the first draft of my Bio IA due sometime in the first week of February. My research topic is: " What is the effect of temperature on the activity rate of amylase". Right now I'm having trouble finding a way to get my materials together. My top priority is enzymes as we can borrow scales, beakers and etc. I've been searching online but with no success. On Amazon they have a good deal, but it won't ship to Canada. I saw this other website but the approximate time it takes to ship from their warehouse in Montana to Calgary takes 2-3 weeks, which is past my deadline. As a last resort if I cannot get enzymes, I'm wondering if I could use saliva as it has amyla…
