Okay, so I found a bunch of notes I took when my teachers were giving us IA tips and format..etc. Some of the below I had to copy of the board, so you may find these in the books. So, Biology IAs should follow this general format: DESIGN 1)Research Question 2)Hypothesis/Predictions 3)Variables 4)Apparatus 5)Method/procedure DCP 1)Collected data 2)Data processing 3)Data presentation CE 1)Conclusion 2)Evaluation Design Research question: This should be a clear focused question that says exactly what you are investigating. It shouldn't be too long and it must include the dependent and independent variables. Eg. What is the effect of pH on the activity rate of salivary am…

I keep getting the same question, about how to do well in HL Biology, so thought I should just put it out in a topic. Remember that this is what I am predicted, not sure what the real one is. From what I have seen these are the important points. 1) TRY to like it..and find interest in it. It really helps. If you do like Biology then that’s a bonus! 2) NEVER EVER go to a lesson before you are certain you understand the things covered in the previous one. A main factor of doing bad is keeping things to just gather up on you, and before an exam you struggle to unerstand soo many things when you should be doing past papers. Do whatever it takes to understand something, trust …

Menu Exam Tips Data-Analysis Questions Revision Links Exam Tips These are some tips to tackle Biology questions with respect the action verbs. (BTW, this is taken from the Oxford Biology Study Guide pp.178). Before we start with this, you need to know that there are three types of examination questions; - Multiple Choice Questions (Paper 1): You choose the answer from four possible choices. Read them all, eliminate any unwanted answers to narrow them down. Always give answers and never leave questions empty. Leave the hard ones till the end and focus on the straightforward ones. - Structured Questions (Paper 2 + 3): Each question is broken down to sectio…

Here is a website our bio teacher gave us, after seeing the amount of idea requests, I thought it might be an idea to share it. It has a list of practicals, most of which can be used for an IB bio lab report. There are also some documents such as examples, and consent sheets. http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/practical-biology/topics

I was wondering what are some of the labs that you have completed to turn in as your Biology IA's? Can you also explain some of what the experiment is? It is getting pretty close to deadline time and so far my class has only completed one Biology IA and that was done last year with our old teacher. Our new one has not even discussed IA's in detail. Sometimes she gives suggestions on the little labs we do to turn it into our IA's, but honestly, those labs are really stupid. Some of my classmates were thinking about taking some other IA ideas and do all of our IA's on our own. Any suggestions? Well, the one lab that we completed last year was on measuring the densit…

Hey guys, I need a Biology IA due tomorrow! I've been thinking of them for over a month now and I still don't have anything, and it's getting super difficult. What did you do? Were there any topics that you liked but your teacher did not approve ( I can try to get ideas from it). Even discussing topics and things in biology is going to help here THANK YOU SO MUCH

Hello. I was just wondering how long your biology IA labs were, including title page, appendices, works cited? How many pages in total would be reasonable? More specifically, how long of a conclusion is long enough to cover everything? I think I could be able to go on and on for 10 pages of conclusion (excluding evaluation), but I think that's obviously not what IB wants? (Even though this is internally assessed...) An unrelated question: can there be some handwritten parts? Such as the labelling of hand-drawn diagrams? Thanks.

At my school, it's never been done, but the course is also condensed into one year and by no means it is an "IB School" (meaning, IB is definitely not the program our school revolves around). So, I continue to wonder, do I attribute this apparent difficulty in earning a 7 to the test itself or to the students taking it (or, of course, both...)? Any opinions from people who have taken the test? Also, our coordinator also said something about blaming Group 4 for her lack of 7s. Does anyone know what she might mean by this?

Hey guys, I was assigned my first IA for HL bio today, and it has to be on osmosis. The topic is "What is the effect of variable X on osmosis rate?" however, the teacher said that it doesn't necessarily have to be about osmosis rate. I have some ideas so far, but I'm new to HL bio (well, bio in general, since I was in HL economics before) and I need some help and guidance in regards to good titles and labs for this topic. My ideas so far are: -Osmosis rates on different vegetables (potato, cabbage, idk.) -Osmosis rate for potato slices of different sizes (one with more surface area, etc.) -Osmosis rate on 3 different slices of potatoes (or any other vegetable/etc. that …

Well yes... my first biology design lab this year and i'm half-scared half-excited. Too bad the half-scared part has a more important issue: I don't know how to approach my lab topic... So apparently it has to do with enzymes and our class is going to investigate the effect of changing one variable that will alter enzyme activity. Because enzymes work under specific conditions, if you change that specific condition we have to find out how it will change. Some key things to mention( we can choose which type of enzymes we would like to do: beef liver, potato, pineapple .etc) Yay..... So here is my question to you: has anyone done a lab that has to do with enzymes or simila…

Yo! So, let me get down to business. My Biology lab work or coursework will be using a factor - which mine will be Substrate Concentration - that affects an enzyme - which my teacher has given us Lipase to work on Apparently, I am not that clear with what is what and how does that affect that and what can I use to experiment on... That is my current problem. (I know, shame on me for not listening to my teacher during class) I tried reading the book, but it explains how it reacts and it is rather irrelevant for the information I need to get this experiment going... So, as of the moment, could anyone of you guys, explain that to me? Basically, How can my chosen factor af…

From May 2016 session, science IA is changed so that students can do online database analysis as their IA right? I want to write something similar to this one --> https://ibpublishing.ibo.org/server2/rest/app/tsm.xql?doc=d_4_biolo_tsm_1408_1_e&part=8&chapter=10 which takes the database from WHO and sees the correlation between the incidence of a disease and HDI (Human development Index). Is there anyone who wrote online database analysis IA this year and scored well (7) ? Since this is a new thing, my teacher is kind of negative about it... But I still want to write it, as I can't think of any original IA experiments. Thank you!

I'm in HL biology, I'm looking into buying either the Heinemann HL Bio book or the CJ Clegg Bio book. Yes, I do use Allott and our school supplies the big Campbell and Reece book, but C&R is huuuuuuuge and a pain to look through, and I already use Allott for studying like mad, however, I'm wondering if anyone has seen the two textbooks I mentioned above, and would give a suggestion to which one is best to use for supplementary reading (the notes we get in class are from the overhead with few diagrams so they're hard to memorize). For SL chem, we use the Heinemann book, and I love it, but everyone seems raving mad about Clegg for biology...

So I'm sleep deprived and my ESS teacher hates my class, which means that I have no idea what to do for an ESS IA. At the moment I just need to figure out a topic/question, but I don't know how to pick one. So, any tips? I'm just so lost and don't even know what topics the IA can be on or anything. I'd really appreciate at least a nudge in the right direction. Especially since I just saw that there have to be multiple experiments (maybe?)

Hello! So I have been brainstorming about what kind of experiment I could do for my biology IA for a couple of months now, and yesterday I had an eureka moment and figured out that I could do it about yeast. We brew a national Russian drink (kvass) at home and it hit me that we actually use yeast for that (I just never thought about it before). Since it's a biological process I could write an investigation about it, and the fact that yeast fermentation is something that my family deals with quite often and that it produces one of the most beloved drinks in my country, would make the investigation more personal and get me a better grade. So now I know that I want to d…

I might have an idea on how this works but I'm not completely sure. I figured I might as well go into this forum and ask all you IB Biology dorks! I'm in Pre-IB, so this is only like the basics. However... The circulatory system is like the circulation of blood throughout our bodies. "Oxygen poor" blood returns to the right side of the heart after it has completed its journey throughout the body, and is then pumped to the lungs which provide it with a new supply of oxygen. After this, the blood flows into the left side of the heart, where it is pumped out to the body through the aorta, until it eventually returns to the right side of the heart again and the cycle is re…

Hey guys... So, i have to pick a research question for my IA, and I couldn't really think of anything. My bio teacher wants the entire class to each come up with "original" research questions, and I'm struggling, because it's so hard to think of anything that I can do in a practical that hasn't been done a thousand times. I'm really interested in genetics, but I couldn't think of anything that I would be able to investigate. Do you think it would be okay to use the golden ratio to measure and compare people's faces and their parents faces, etc...? I was originally thinking of doing the typical "fruit fly" experiment, but it might be a bit difficult to find fruit fl…

So, I'm trying to make research question for biology ia, and I'm wondering if the research question's result is kind of obvious, would I get low points? For example, if the research question is "How does temperature affect a certain enzyme activity?" It's pretty obvious that the enzyme would have the optimal activity around at 40 degrees Celsius. So my question is even though the research question's result can be predicted easily, is it possible to get high scores just by having a really good investigation?

I have to do a IA on the germination of seeds. I have my independent variable which is salinity. I am looking at it effect on the time it takes for a seed to germinate. I have a few questions, What is a good range of concentrations? How much of the concentration should I add? What is the best way to get my concentration? Should I add the concentration to the soil and add the salinity of the soil on top, or change the salinity of the soil to a fixed point? E.g. add 1% to soil or make the soil have 1% salinity. All help would be great! Thanks!

Our HL Bio teacher last year retired, so this year our teacher is new. I don't exactly trust what he says about things related to IB because I am not sure if he knows what he's talking about. Many times during lessons he doesn't really know. So I was wondering if I could get some advice on whether these two labs would make good IAs or not. 1. Testing Laughing and Shouting/Crying on Blood Pressure: Basically I was going to find audio clips of people laughing and of people crying. I would have 2 groups, one for laughing, one for crying. I would test their regular blood pressure first, and then test it after they have listened to the clips, and see if there's a difference.…

Hey, IBS, Here's the Skydrive link to all the study material I used for my ES&S exams in November. Hopefully they will be of use to those doing the exam in May. http://sdrv.ms/QmqhqJ I think the most useful folder is the Syllabus page; it has the course outline, glossaries, assessment statements, etc. It also has revision summaries for the entire course, which was compiled from the PearsonBacc, Oxford, and OSC Revision Guide books for ES&S. There's also PowerPoints, word documents, etc on certain topics. Enjoy studying
