My biology IA proposal is due soon and I don´t really have a concrete idea. Since I´m lactose intolerant I want to do something related to lactose and lactase but I can´t think of what I should do with it. Changing the temperature and the concentration seems a bit too straight forward so I was thinking I´d change the pH but I´m not too sure... Does anyone have any ideas???

Hey! A quick little post to kindly ask if any of y'all could fill out this form for my data collection for my Biology IA. All you have to do is complete a small online colour vision test and then add your result. Thank you ahead of time for the help! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfxh562qoHj7CO0XPgMwOVFrkjR1ZvDGwMublGAkQ3opAGFYw/viewform?usp=sf_link

I am doing a report about the effect of water temperature on primary productivity in aquatic ecosystems. I had written my research question as "How does water temperature affect the primary productivity in aquatic ecosystems?", but I got feedback saying that it is too vague... How do I make my research question a more detailed one?

Hello, I am a student in grade 12, and I struggle a lot with biology. It's time for IA's and my research question is: “How does temperature affect the enzyme activity of lipase when digesting milk, measured by equipment changed with the use of phenolphthalein?” The teacher said it's the easiest I can do and that many have done this before. I can't really find any former experiments on this topic, could you please tell me the IV, DV, CV and equipment I should use for the IA?? Thank you so much!

Hi! I am currently working on my IA for HL bio, and I'm really, really struggling. I'm predicted a 5, and I do generally well (80-90% on every test), however, I have always struggled with doing lab reports. Suppose I fail my IA, will that mean that I will fail the class?

Hi guys, I need some second opinions on my Biology HL IA, I'm doing an experiment on the effect of different carbon dioxide concentrations on the hormone ethylene's ability to ripen unripe pears. It's basically a spin-off of the simple "put-an-unripe-fruit-next-to-a-ripe-banana" experiment in which the ethylene hormone that is released by the ripe bananas helped accelerate the ripening of the fruit next to it, with the added twist of examining the effects of different carbon dioxide concentrations on this phenomenon. The ripeness of the pears would be measured using glucose extraction. 1) The lab at school has a CO2 sensor that I can use, but I'm a little loss in te…

For my biology IA I am going to compare one's BMI value to the new Relative Fat Mass Index value to determine how inaccurate BMI is for each person (I will average the percent error at the end as well). However, I'm struggling to determine what my independent variable is. Would it be an individuals height, weight, and waist measurement (which sounds wrong because its technically more than one thing being changed) or the test used (BMI vs. RFM)? I think the dependent variable would be the calculated percent error.

Hi, so I'm just getting acquainted to the BIO IA, I thought about investigating How does a change in oxygen concentration affect the fermentation rate in yeast. The thing is, there are most likely experiments done on that topic before. Am I allowed to redo experiments in that case?

Dear IB Survival community, I am almost done writing the first draft of my Biology IA. I have investigated the effect of different temperatures on the glucose content in Bananas. I have collected pictures of how the Bananas have ripened and included them under the qualitative data section in my report. Now I´m wondering where do I comment on this qualitative data? Do I talk about this in my conclusion even though it is not part of my research question or hypothesis? Thanks for your help guys :))

How were the IB Biology HL Papers 1 and 2 for everyone? Paper one was just about as hard as I thought it would be, but I feel like they dumbed down paper 2 this year? Most of the stuff on it was stuff I barley studied purley because it was easier material. I have had plenty of tests and practice exams that were more difficult. My entire class felt the same way, I'm worried grade boundaries will be super high now though. What do you guys think?

Hello fellow IB students, I am currently writing my Biology Internal Assessment Lab-design and I am struggling to determine the controlled variables in my experiment. I am writing about the effect of different temperatures on the ripening process of Bananas. (the ripening process in Bananas is controlled by different enzymes). Now my question is what would be the controlled variables in this experiment? Thank you for your help!

Hey, so it's that time of the year where IB Year 1's are getting ready to do their Group 4 projects as well as preparing their IAs. I'm totally stumped on what I want to do, but I do know what topic (Ecology) I really like working with animals but due to ethical reasons, I'm limited to what I can do with them so the teacher suggested to mainly work with plants. I would like to do something interesting with them but I need some help generating a solid idea. Help would be much appreciated, so if you do have just an idea or specific topic let me know

Hi all, As you are starting to review for IB ESS exams you might find this YouTube page I created helpful. It goes through the whole course topic by topic. If you want to check it out the link to the first video is below. I want to update it with some new videos between now and the exam so if there are topics that you want to review, post here and let me know! I also designed a review course with some additional content, if you to check that out the link is on the YouTube page. Happy studying!

I hope I get a response that may aid my situation, but please take time for this 5 minute - read and read the whole thing, and please bear with me as I give you some background knowledge over my case, as I need all the help that I could get at this stage. So over the past 2 years (2018 & 2019) of IB I've dealt with 3 different teachers, obviously with different expertise, who taught me IB Biology higher lever (HL). Unfortunately the first teacher in my first year (2018) of the dp programme was of very low expertise. The teacher demanded we abide by the notes he compiled, which were incomplete and lacked important information. However, bing we were new to the…

Hi! I need some help from all y'all who are Australians, others are also welcome to answer! So basically, I'll be in yr 11 completing the SACE next year but I am looking to do 1 IB subject; ESS *AS AN EXTRA YR 12 SUBJECT FOR BACKUP*. I don't know if this is a wise choice as a 7 in ESS is scaled to become a 19/20 for SACE not a 20/20. Keep in mind this an extra yr 12 subject on top of yr 12 biology which I will also complete in yr 11. Is this worth it or should I complete yr 12 psychology in yr 11 since I did yr 11 psychology in yr 10. Should I just pick something easy from the SACE yr 11 subjects instead and focus on the ones I need? Th…

I am currently trying to come up with a topic for my ESS IA and I don't know what topic I should do it on. I am thinking about doing something related to soil but I know that I need to carry out experiments to collect data. So a topic that requires an experiment that that is too complicated or takes a long time needs to be avoided. Would you guys mind giving me some ideas? It can be anything and maybe I can develop it to be my IA. Thanks you!

Hi guys! Is there a word count for the Bio IA/II (individual investigation is what my teacher calls it)? I tried looking it up on the official website but it just says that its 6-12 pages long?? So does that mean that font size and line spacing don't matter to this paper? That's because I think my paper is getting a bit long... I'm also aware that the history IA has a word count and now I'm confused if that applies to the Bio IA. So which papers/IAs have a word count and which ones have a page count? Does bibliography count for the page count/word count in the Bio IA? Any advice is very much appreciated! Thanks!!

Hi there, I'm currently thinking about what type of experiment I want to do for my bio IA and I'm really stuck! I looked through a lot of past IA's and they look really complicated and so in-depth! I want to make sure that I have a fairly original and easy hands-on experiment, but the problem is that I can't find a good way to expand and analyze the topic. That's why I'm trying to think of a good question thoroughly so that I won't regret my choices before its too late! As of now, I'm interested in enzyme activity, yeast fermentation, and maybe something to do with micro-organisms in pond water? I have no idea on what to explore on these topics but I'm…

Hi guys, This is pertaining to the ecology unit as well: so I'm doing my IA on how an abiotic factor of temperature effects corals. Except I just realized that all my data involved a genus of corals, rather than a species of corals. So I've been investigating the effect of a genus on temperature, but my background pertains to species ( such as ecological niches and species, abiotic factors being limiting factors, natural selection for species). What should I do? Should I apply all this background to investigate a genus and list off the fact that I could not get data on a single species and therefore it is a limitation in the end?? I really hope I haven't …

So I have been doing my IA experiment where I've made Petri dishes with agar and collected bacteria from my mouth using a sterile swab but bacteria isn't growing on my Petri dishes. I have kept them in a dark area with approx. 34 degrees Celsius environment, upside down but only a low progress after a week. Can someone explain to me, what I can do in order to make it work. My experiment is basically trying to see the effectiveness of different soaps to get rid of the bacteria but I can't do it if there is no bacteria growing on my Petri dishes!!!! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.

At my school, the option of further Human Physiology (D) is traditionally taught in HL Bio. However, I would much prefer to study option C, Ecology and Conservation (it better pertains to what I think I want to pursue in the future). My teacher said that would leave me to teach myself as nobody else wants to study that option as well. Is choosing a different topic a bad decision in this case? I don't want to endanger my exam grade, but I also know that option c is much more interesting to me and would probably be more enjoyable. Thanks in advance

Hello everyone, I am trying to come up with an interesting internal assessment idea for Biology HL that can be performed in the average high school classroom here in the United States. My initial question is as follows: “What is the effect of temperature (5, 10, 15 degrees Celcius) on the rate of respiration of E. coli bacteria as measured by a Respirometer?” I really like this question, but as my instructor pointed out, the obvious flaw with it is that I do not have access to a respirometer capable of doing what I need it to do in a conventional high school classroom. As stated, I really like my topic and do not want to let it go. Does anyone have a…

I'm planning on doing an experiment on the effect of antacids on protein digestion - using the enzyme and acid to recreate stomach conditions. I will then test for how much protein has been digested. I have a feeling the antacid is basically just altering the pH - which I could do it simply by changing the acid's concentration. I'd like to use the antacid but is the antacid an unnecessary step? Another experiment I could do is testing the effect of antibiotics on seed germination.
