Hi all, so I used a uv-vis spec for my lab but for some reason, my graph got deleted but i still have my data from the spectrometer. Is there a way that i can create a concentration vs absorbance graph without having the spectrometer inserted? THANK YOU

I'm realllllly struggling with my chemistry IA. My experiment was too easy and I'm not finding anything to write about. Anyway, if i get a 3 on this IA and get a 7 on all 3 papers, can I still get a 7 overall in Chemistry SL?? I think the worst I could get on this IA is a 3 but I might be able to do better.

Could someone please explain how I can use a database for my Chemistry IA? I just don't understand how I can use a database that is already focused on investigating something and then use it to investigate something else???? I might just be wrong about how I'm actually supposed to use a database. An example would help me understand (doesn't have to be chemistry). My chemistry teacher hasn't really explained how to do our IA and I'm running out of time.

Hi, I need help with writing a chemistry IA that is a simulation. How do I write up the lab report (errors, variables, etc) when it is just a simulation and I didn't actually do the experiment? Help needed urgently and if an example IA could be found (I couldn't find one) it would be greatly appreciated.

I calculated the uncertainty for raw data using max-min/2 (what my teacher told me) this is for systematic error So for random error do i JUST calculate the % uncertainty for each apparatus (apparatus uncertainty/measured value x100) and then add them together? what else am I supposed to do? HELP

Hi, I have a P1 question that I don't know how to solve. Any help would be welcome. Why do gases deviate from the ideal gas law at high pressure? A. Molecules have finite volume. B. Cohesive forces increase the volume from the ideal. C. Increasing pressure increases the temperature of the gas. D. Collisions between molecules occur more frequently as pressure increases.

Im doing an IA for Chem on a comparison of different transitional metals acting as catalysts in redox reactions but have some questions... 1. Should I do multiple redox reactions or just see the effects on 1? 2. Which redox reaction would best suit this idea, and how would I measure the rate of reaction, as in what would be an indication of the end of the reaction? Thanks guys..your feedback is much appreciated...

Hi, I am working on my chemistry IA and I just got all my materials in to run the experiment. The topic I chose was the synthesis of the sweetener dulcin from the analgesic tylenol. I've written my procedures and I believe they are correct, however, I am unsure about how to set up this experiment in regards to the lab equipment. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Does an IA need to be 100% original? I am really struggling to come up with a topic, but have a few ideas bellow. I am fairly decent at chemistry and know I can write a good lab report but coming up with an idea on what I can do is quite challenging, as I have been looking for one since November last year, but still can't find one that I think would be good to do. Here I have a couple of ideas on possible IAs. Would any of these ones be good to develop for a HL chem IA??? I was trying to solve a Hess's Law problem, but I can't seem to "get rid of" one of the compounds. The compound is water. There is no H2O in the final equation (the equation I'm trying to determine the enthalpy for) but I really can't figure out a way to cancel it out. Is water negligible in this case? Here is the question if anyone is interested: Calculate the standard enthalpy change when one mole of methane is formed from its elements in their standard states. The standard enthalpies of combustion, ΔHθ c , of carbon, hydrogen and methane are −393, −286 and −890 kJmol-1 respectively. C (s ) + 2H2 (g) → CH4 ΔH1 = ? C (s) + O2 (g) → CO2(g) ΔH2 =−393 k…

Just to get you interested, for every reply I will send a bad chemsitry pun to that person...and will try to make it original... For my chem IA am going to investigate anti-oxidants in health foods. I thought this was a good idea after hearing about all these "free radicals" in the human body and how they are linked to diseases blah blah blah, but antioxidants can remove them. I want to investigate something in this area whether it be looking at antioxidants in food at different temperatures, or comparing them, but I am unsure which path to go down. If you have any ideas how I can progress this idea further please reply (you will get a good pun) OR if…

Hey guys My topic revolved around GERD and how to treat it. For this I initally took an approach to take a proton pump inhibitor(PPI) and compare it with an antacid. A PPI works by stopping the stomach cells to produce acids while antacids increase the pH. However, after acid base titration, I realised PPIs neutralize acid too. My teacher however feels that I should compare two antacids rather than take a PPI and an antacid. I personally feel comparing two different medicines would be better. Please give me your opinions. FYI, my RQ is: Is the recommended dosage of the antacid better at neutralising HCl in the stomach than the recommended dosage of t…

Hey guys so long story short I decided to hold off my IA until the final week, and I need to complete my experiment basically in the next 3 days or so. My teacher gave me a pH metre, so I'm thinking about doing experiments that involve measuring the pH. My initial idea was testing how the temperature of a solution affected its pH, but my teacher said it was too simple as temperature simply changed the kA. Basically what I'm asking is does anyone have any easy topics for a chem sl IA that involve a pH metre, as well as simple household chemicals(not sulfuric acid or anything lol) Thanks so much

Unsure if this is the right place to ask this, but I have a result related problem for my IA. My topic is calculating KC for the hydrolysis of ethyl ethanoate, with titration as the chosen method. The concentration of ethyl ethanoate and water varied between different trial, but as the equilibrium law states only temerature should affect pH. However, when I calculated Kc for the different trials I ended up with five quite different values where the general trend as that Kc decreased as concentration of ethyl ethanoate decreased. I have no idea why this happened....is there any chemistry gurus out there who might know what can have happened?

Hi, I was just wondering if I could get some input (or mere approval from current/former IB students) about my chemistry IA research question. Is this a common lab idea? I haven't really seen it anywhere so I'm not sure but I would like to make mine unique. Is it a realistic experiment to conduct within 10 hours? "How does cooking time affect the vitamin C content in various vegetables?"

For my IA, I am trying to determine the conductance (ion flow) in different drinks such as distilled water, Gatorade, Powerade, coconut water, orange juice, Pedialyte, and a solution containing sodium chloride. I was planning on doing this by using a digital multimeter and measuring the resistance of the substance and then taking the inverse of it to get the conductance. I would determine whichever substance had the highest conductance and by doing so, would be able to find the substance with the most electrolytes. Growing up playing sports, I have always been told the importance of staying hydrated as well as replenishing electrolytes after vigorous exercise, and I was …

My IA is due in a couple of days and I realized that my hypothesis was wrong. There was no relation between the two variables I investigated. I searched everywhere online and I can't find anything. Can I keep the experiment the same and write in my conclusion that my hypothesis is wrong and then explain why? Will that ruin my grades? I'm an expected 7 and I don't want to drop because of the IA. Or do I have to research a new topic in 2 days?

Hey guys For my chem IA I was thinking on doing an acid base reaction on stomach acids. So what i was thinking was to do neutralisation reactions with HCl to represent acids in the stomach, with things like pharmaceutical medicines, maybe bananas, or other bases but im unsure if this would be correct. For personal engagement, i could even do swimming pools or something but im quite unsure about it.

So for my IA, I dissolved a 1000mg vitamin c tablet in 355mL of water, took 20mL of it and diluted it to 100mL making it about 0.0032mol/L. I then added 5mL of 0.5mol/L potassium iodide, 5mL of 1.0mol/L hydrochloric acid and some 6 drops of 1 gram of starch dissolved in 100mL of water. I then titrated that entire sample with potassium iodate to determine the concentration of vitamin c. The endpoint was suppose to be when the solution turned blue (iodine+starch) but it ended up slowly turning yellow and then becoming darker until it eventually turned red. I tried increasing the concentration of potassium iodate but it just lead to the solution becoming red faster. I t…

Hi, my idea for my chem IA is to get a bunch of different types of juices or drinks containing acid such as citric acid, and measure the enthalpy of neutralization of each juice by reacting it with a base. I'm not sure if I will be able to write a sufficient IA for chem HL on this topic, so I would appreciate feedback on if my topic would work or not, thanks so much!

Hey guys. So I've finished my EE, my IAs.. everything except my chemistry IA which is proving to be a real pain. My topic was the percentage by mass of ammonium in different fertilizers, and using back titration, I found the percentage by mass. The experimentation was easy enough, and that is all done, and my readings are more or less what I expected. However, I am having trouble with actually writing my IA. For my results analysis, all I can write is which fertilizer is the best out of the three. Is there anything else I can write in my analysis or any possible graphs I can include? Please help, this is the only thing I have left to finish, and its due in less than 3 day…

Hey guys, I was doing some early revision, and covering the next couple of topics in Chem before school starts again. However, upon looking at the acid base HL content, I was confused at what was required for us to know about pH curves, chapter 18.3. I am using the Pearson HL 2nd Edition text book and my IB chemsitry study guide 2014 edition, however they seem to give way too much information on the topic, than what is in the Chem syllabus. Could I please have some guidance in what I need to look at, or any good resources for me to use? Thanks

So I am initially doing my experiment on 'The effect of tarnishing on the electrical conductivity of different metals' with my aim being trying to prove that electrical conductivity changes when a metal is tarnished, but I am unsure of this IA as it has a lot of physics in it ( calculating the conductivity of a metal) and my teacher said she is unsure whether or not I will be able to do so. My IA is due in about 2 months but time is running out, please can someone give me any advice?

ok its like 3am and im feeling stupid. my book says group 3 has lower ionization energy than group 2 since group 3 electronic configurations are in the p block and the p have higher energy than the s orbitals but if they need high ionization energy if the p orbital is higher in energy, and therefore requires more energy to remove wtf im so confused. help

I enjoy chemistry, I think it's quite interesting, but I hate labs with a passion. I can do the write-up and I normally score decently, but I have no interest in them other than getting a mark booster. Most of the others in my grade have ideas but I honestly cannot think of a single IA to do that A) I have access to the correct equipment, B) I have the technical knowledge for, and C) is different enough from what I'm planning on doing for my bio IA (I'm kinda in the same boat there, but I have a decent idea). Because of the above factors, I have decided that a Data Analysis IA would be the best, where I evaluate various sets of data and come to a conclusion bas…

25.0g of LiCl and 55..0g of CaCl2 is mixed together with water to make a solution. The final [Cl-] is 0.632 mol dm-3. What is the final volume of the solution? The correct answer is 2.5 dm3. I solved for moles for both compounds first. C1V1 = C2V2 , which is the same as n =C2V2.. so I need concentration of each compound right? How do I figure that out from the final concentration of Cl?

Hey, guys. I'll just give out a list of my subjects in case it helps: HL: Biology, Chemistry, English SL: French, Psychology, Maths I'm currently thinking of going into the medical field, but I've been having some doubt recently. I want to do Psychiatry and if my calculations are correct, it would take 10+ years to finish my education. So I might just go into the healthcare field, not necessarily Medicine, but something similar. Although, as I said, I'm not sure yet. So I currently am a right disgrace in Chemistry. Don't get me wrong, I really, really like the subject and am incredibly interested in the sciences. But I'm afraid my teacher isn…
