I am doing a chem ia on how the brewing temperature will affect the caffeine content within tea. I have done my experiment and all but I am having a hard time calculating my errors. So basically I used solvent extraction method to extract caffeine from tea with chloroform and then evaporated it. At last I was left with crude caffeine so i used its mass and the molar mass of standard caffeine to find the amount in mols. To find the errors do I just need to use the uncertainty of molar mass(0.001g) and the mass of crude caffeine (0.002g)? To prepare the tea solutions I have used water and tea bags. To get rid of the tannins (compounds that could be extracted with caffeine a…

Hello everyone, I'm wondering how I would calculate the uncertainty of my findings for a lab report. I found the activation energy of the alka seltzer reaction in water (C₆H₈O₇+3NaHCO₃ → 3H₂O+3CO2+Na3C6H5O7) The way I found it was to measure pressure change over time in a closed erlenmeyer flask, convert that to concentration (using ideal gas law), and take its inverse over time to graphically find the rate constant. Then, I took the natural log of the rate constant against the inverse of time (aka the Arrhenius equation) to give me Ea times r. I divided the slope of the graph by R to give me Ea. However, now I'm confused about where to begin with apparatus unce…

When 100 cm3 of 1.0 mol dm–3 HCl is mixed with 100 cm3 of 1.0 mol dm–3 NaOH, the temperature of the resulting solution increases by 5.0 °C. What will be the temperature change, in °C, when 50 cm3 of these two solutions are mixed? Can someone explain how to do this question ?

I have just received a second extension on my chemistry IA. I have all my calculations down and uncertainties, the issue with my IA is that my experiment was terrible and I dug myself into a terrible hole which it looks like I can't get out of. My experiment was an acid base titration with 5 different types of vinegar (white, white wine, champagne, apple cider, rice wine), and my processed data is their pH values (the range is between pH 2.35 - pH 2.47 - not much variety and it concerns me). The vinegar did not have labels which specified the acid content in them, and I cannot simply calculate the acetic acid content of each vinegar because apple cider vinegar for example…

For my Chem IA, would it be a good idea to calculate calories in different cooking oils to find which is the "healthiest" option? I am doing HL, so need some HL part of the course. I thought this idea had personal engagement and would be pretty interesting to calculate.

Hey everyone, I am a Chemistry SL student and I have to come up with an idea or topic for my Chemistry IA. I'm really interested in forensics but haven't found much ideas of it in reagrds to an ib chem ia. I have an idea in mind which is " The effect of temperature of latent fingerprints". I was wondering if this is too much of a broad research queestion and how to implement chemistry fully into it. And also if anyone has any ideas or references that could possible help me? Desperately seeking your help, thank you!!

I am doing my IA on the effect of different washing methods on the number of bacteria colonies on the surface of a fruit. my method is composed of me visually counting the number of bacteria colonies. Therefore there is no direct uncertainty on my results other than human error. I don't know what to do is it bad that i don't have uncertainty calculations? will i lose a lot of marks? someone please help.

Would anyone mind guiding me in doing my experiment for the Chem IA. I am trying to find the effectiveness of different brands of liquid antacids. I have cabbage powder which I plan to mix with water for my indicator. I am using distilled white vinegar as my acid. I have three different brands of antacid Pepto Bismol, Mylanta, and Graviscon. I have all the equipment I need (I think). I have a buret, magnetic stirrer, 2 small beakers, and pH paper. I’m just not sure how to do the experiment. What do I start with? What type of titration will I do? What measurements should I keep track of? My end goal is to find which liquid antacid is the best at neutralizing a…

Hi, I started doing my chemistry IA on the effect of temperature on buffering capacity. I added a pH 7 buffer to distilled water and titrated it with NaOH. I then measured the amount of NaOH taken to increase the pH of the water by a unit of 1. I tried this for temperatures between 5 and 80 degrees but there was no significant difference between the data obtained. This there any notable fault in my methodology? I have to finish gathering data for my IA within one week. Since I was going to discuss the effect of temperature on the equilibria of the buffer solution, I am in the process of finding another IA experiment in the same subject area. If you h…

Hey guys, I am a grade 11 IB HL Chem student and my teacher never gives us homework solutions to check our answers and he/she refuses to take up questions too when we ask him/her. My friends and I are quite stressed since we can never be sure whether our answers are correct or not. I was wondering is this an IB norm or is it just us?

Since this is an antilog equation, my teacher said that propagating concentration uncertainties from pH is beyond the scope of IB Chemistry syllabus so I would have to do another way. He said that I should " calculate half the range of the pH values for each variation." What does this mean???? For context, let's say my pH is 2.13 +/- 0.05 and my H+ concentration is 7.41E-3. How would I get the uncertainty of it? thank you so much 🙂

I was planning to do my HL chemistry database IA on the relationship between corrosion rate and pH level such as the difference between corrosion rate of steel when reacted with ocean water and rain water, but my teacher told me it is too simple and the answer is obvious. Are there any other factors I can or should add to my paper to make it complex enough? Or should I change my topic completely?

Hello. I've been trying to find a topic and research question for my extended essay but I have been unable to do. I have found an experimental technique in the calorimeter which measures energy content/calories and I want to measure energy contents in different foods but I do not know what I should investigate specifically and expand on this. I don't want it to be as simple as "as x increases, y increases". Testing out different foods and seeing which one(s) have the higher calories is way too simple and I'm basically stuck..Please help!

Hi, Does anyone know any databases to calculate the enthalpy of various organic compounds from? I was thinking one that has measured changes in temperature, so I can calculate enthalpy, but other ones work too. My experimental values didn't work, so I'm switching over to a database IA and it's a bit last minute. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you

Hey guys, I am really confused on what type of IA to work on during quarantine. Obviously, we have to use data base and computational model since we have no access to labs. So as for my idea, I would like to make different adjustments for different types of molecules (in length, total number of bonds...) and compare their bond angles by drawing them with software. Is this a feasible idea? Will I get decent marks? Does enthalpy and length have a definitive correlation with bond angle in relation to VSPER Theory??? How can I best structure my IA based on this?

Hey, I am confused that the IA topic I am doing is basically copying. Since I am doing database (thanks to covid-19), I realised that I needed various independent and dependent variables. I could not find a topic and had constant rejections so my sir had given another classmate's alternative topic. I have a feeling that its mostly copying since when my classmate had given me the topic, he/she also gave me a research paper for this as a resource. When I had looked through the research paper, the research question was similar to that of the research paper, with same independent and dependent variables. I had written background information using that research paper and …

I want to do an IA preferably in topics 5 or 6 (energetics/thermochemistry and chemical kinetics) but other topics work fine too, and I want one that I can do on a simulation online. But I'm having trouble finding a good topic, and I don't want to do something super easy like "how does temperature or surface area affect rate of reaction" where the answer is super obvious, but I don't want to do something too hard as I want to be able to do it on a simulation online. Does anyone have any easy/backup topics I could use, this would be greatly appreciated.

I was recently doing some practice problems for my IB chemistry SL test and ran across this problem. "A 2.450 g sample of a mixture of NaCl and CaCl2 was dissolved in distilled water. The chloride solution was treated with excess AgNO3 (aq) solution. The precipitated AgCl (s) was collected, washed, and dried. The mass of the dried AgCl was 6.127 g. Calculate percent by mass of the NaCl and CaCl2 in the original mixture." (2 marks) AgCl has a molar mass of 143.45 g/mol, so I calculated that the amount of Cl in the sample was 6.127*(35.45/143.35) = 1.515 g Cl This means that together, there has to be (2.450 - 1.515) = .935 g of Na and Ca combined. At this poi…

Hi, For my Chem HL IA, I want to investigate how the different ligands in transition metal complexes affect the color of its compounds. I plan to use software like ChemSketch and Molview to draw the structures of transition metal complexes, but I can't find any tools in the software that I can use to calculate the energy released from the splitting of d-orbitals. Is there any website or application that I can use to calculate this?

How could the metal charge or ligand charge of a transition metal be connected to its absorbance of light / the wavelength of light it absorbs. I am trying to figure out the connection between this for my IA and im looking for some help to get started. I need to set up an experiment but before that I want to try to understand the question. I understand each topic separately I just don't see the link.

I've got a standard electrolysis IA, my dependent variable is obviously the deposit of the ion on the other electrode, but my independent variable is surface area. I've had some troubles with coming up with a way to test this, but I've concluded the the best way would be to cover up some parts of the electrode with waterproof tape. What uncertainties may be present? How could a certain amount of waterproof tape placed onto the electrode to test surface disrupt the electrolysis?
