There's a biology and chemistry help thread, figured a physics one would be appreciated by a few people Hoping some people will check here and help people who have questions, I'll try my best but my knowledge of physics does not go very far honestly and it's not my best science

Hello people, Are there any sites with Physics IB exercises to practice on? Not past papers.

Thought I would follow the trend and make one of these threads for poor, forgotten Physics. B) My class is doing Biomedical Physics and Optics. I actually think there are a lot of fascinating options for Physics. I was reading through my textbook, and the one where people fly into outer space and age slower is really interesting. Not that I believe that it would actually happen. I don't care which genius came up with that theory, I refuse to believe it. Prove me wrong.

Update (May 2014) - Added all of topic 3: Thermal Physics I've been an IB teacher for many years, and enjoy helping out more than just my own students. With this in mind, I am working on a series of free videos on my own studynova website (they are all free there, plus you can get all the notes I make), but am also mirroring them on Youtube. These videos are about specific topics within the IB Physics SL or HL curriculum. So if there are specific topics that you'd like to see done in detail with lots of examples, just post it in this thread. I'll take a look and see if there is any overwhelming consensus on any topics, and then start doing videos on those ones. I can go…

Hello IB physicists! I just made an app that includes comprehensive notes for the 2016 first assessment IB Physics syllabus. The app has detailed notes with colorful pictures for all topics plus option D (astrophysics) (engineering physics coming soon) and are made perfectly according to the new syllabus by subtopics so it makes sure that you don't miss out any content that you need to learn for the exams! The link to the app is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.gonative.android.qnjjl&hl=en. Feel free to check it out! Happy revising! :') Update: All notes are also available on https://ibphysics.org/!

My physics exam is in 2 days and I have to still study Nuclear physics and understand force fields and electricity..........GG I am aiming for lvl 6 converted....what is that raw? a 65%? I guess this thread is my form of achieving some level of catharsis.

Hey guys, I just had a question that's been bugging me since the first day our physics teacher open the class. It's my first IB science and the first IB Physics in our school, so I don't really have much reference. Now is it normal for the teacher to make us right up about 2 full IB lab reports a week? The thing is that he does a lab every time we learn something new, which is pretty much every other day, and he says that he wants us to do a lot of labs so he has a lot to choose from when he sends them over to the IB headquarters. But it's ALOT of work! I was just wondering if it's like that in all Physics classes, HL and SL. Feel free to give details Oh, another thing…

Ok so im about to start physics SL. And i just need to know from anyone, is it really hard. Because i did chemistry and i had a hard time with that subject, like do the two subjects have anything in common? If so i need to change to bio. SO yeah i just need some opinons, and i want to be a lawyer so do i really need physcis? Thank you for replies!

Hi, I have two questions 1.- So I am wondering if there is a way by which the uncertainty is equal to the absolute error? 2.- During a lab report, in which I measured the lenght of a piece of wire, surprisingly all of my classmates and I registered 1.67 m exactly! (with a flexometer) Would it be wrong if I wrote in my report no absolute error? X_X

I am currently doing Physics HL and my exams are in May, finding it kind of difficult (some parts are somewhat easy while some very hard to compherehend). Yet even for the easy parts the IB manages to set difficult questions thus screwing you over. What are your thoughts on a specific textbook/study guide that works well for you? I'm not really having a panic attack but am a bit worried. I currently have the Tsokos and Oxford Physics Study Guide by Tim Kirk as a textbook and study guide. Oh and we are currently just starting the HL bit for Electricity (Electromagentic Induction), is that normal considering we are this far in the course?

Hi guys! Right now I am taking Physics SL first year, and apparently I have one of the worst physics teacher I can ever get. The teacher barely teaches the class anything and I am extremely worried for the course as a whole. I am planning to get someone to tutor me but I wanted to know whether this course is difficult or not. AND if I wanted to start teaching or reviewing the course material myself, is there any good book out there to help me? Thanks!

Hey there, IB survivors! Well I am currently in DP2 physics SL and I know it's probably not the right time to start but is it already too late for me? I have been continuously scoring 2s in physics and I really need to improve my physics grade to at least a 4 because it's bringing down my entire IB grade. If I take my predictive grade now, the teacher is obviously going to give me a 2, but I desperately require a 4. Hence, I am going to be taking my predicted grade after my January mocks. Whenever I try to study physics, I end up spending a lot of time on something that I don't need to know which lowers my overall grade. I do enjoy learning physics and its methods, but I …

Hi, I have taken my courses this year with HL Physics, HL Chemistry and HL Economics. While my SL is math, english and spanish. I didn't know about the diploma and made the wrong mistake of taking SL math. I want to take aerospace, mechanical or chemical engineering...However after reading through discussions and articles, math HL is a very challenging course. Does anyone know the IB requirements for universities such as Texas a&m, MCGill or Georgia tech? is is possible to get into these unis with SL Math? My only unis options are in the U.S and not in the UK as i know that they would require HL Math.

What graphing software do you use on labs? Our teacher wants us to use Graph 4.3 but I find it too finicky. I guess I can't really complain because it is free but I just wanted to know what the alternatives are.

Hi, So i'm still in grade 10 and in 3 weeks time about to choose my options. I'm planning to take either aeronautical engineering, mechanical or mechatronics. However, I'm still confused whether I should take HL math. I'm definitely taking HL physics and maybe HL chemistry, if possible. Math is not my strongest subject which is why I'm highly doubting it. Although physics need math, i'm sure i can still manage it with SL math. I'm getting 6s in both Physics and Math...and i'm planning to enter a community college in the U.S before entering a univ. Thanks!

Hello guys, has anyone self studied a physics option? if so, which one is that? I'm currently doing Communications and Astrophysics. I hate Astro and totally suck at it, so I want to self study another option. I would like an option that is more mathematical and requires less memorising. which option do you suggest me to study? or, which option do you think is the easiest? or I would be happy to study a chemistry related option as I'm also taking chem. just not sure which one is the most related to chem. don't worry about me not having enough time or anything, I'll be able to find the time for this self study. thanks guys!

I'm an IB Physics teacher who has been teaching for 10 years, and now I'm working with the IB to help them develop a new Astrophysics Option. Rather than just design it based on what I think you want, I thought I'd actually ask you for your opinion! Here's your chance to have a say about the new syllabus! I am including student opinion to help decide which topics are kept in, which are taken out, and also which topics you'd like added. There are two things I'd very much appreciate your help with: A) First, if you could redesign the astrophysics option, which topics would you find most interesting? Please just write down which of the topics from the list below you think …

So, this is possibly a random topic that I've just created because I'm bored. Actually, no, I'm procrastinating and avoiding writing a thermal physics CE and studying for a topic quiz both for tomorrow. Everyone seems to think that physics students are crazy for taking such a hard and meaningless subject. Why bother? Why not do bio, which is just memorising stuff? To be honest, this is the question I ask myself, and I never seem to find an answer. Why, oh why? But deep down, I know I love physics It's the mystery, it's the power that physics has over fundamental concepts like space and time, and that other sciences can never really reveal. It's almost like magic. S…

My friends and I have gotten signatures of all the IB students at our school who want to take Physics SL and the total number is 15. My principal won't allow a class of this size as he says the Non-IB, Academic, students need the teacher more as they have class sizes of 30+ because of the increasing amount of Gr.9 students at my school. How do we convice our principal that a Physics SL class is needed? As it is for many students in IB as they need Physics to go into Engineering. Do you have any other suggestions as to how we could get a Physics SL credit? Some students, this year, are taking physics in a normal class and then studying the IB material for the exam in t…

How much math is involved (I chose math SL)? Anything helpful would be appreciated, as I'm pretty nervous!

With November exams coming up within just over 3 months, its really time to start studying. Need some tips? Have a read of an article that I wrote in 2010: IB Physics, especially at the Higher Level, is one of the most difficult subjects in the IB Diploma. Nonetheless, it is still very possible to attain a 7. In fact, according to the IB Statistical Report in November 2009, 31% of Standard Level Candidates and 20% of Higher Level Candidates received a 7. This means that on average, in a class of 20 HL students, 4 will get a 7. So how do you get into that top 20%? To find out, I've asked many successful past IB Physics students regarding their techniques, as well as IB Phy…

Hi there, So soon I'll be starting on my first Internal Assessment in physics. I need some suggestions for an experiment / investigation I'll be completing in regards to: Rubber Bands, or Elastic Bands, whatever you like to call them. If it's possible, suggest something that would be rather easy to out take, with a few variables, you could suggest it in a form of a investigation question. – Thank You!

Can someone explain this excerpt from my textbook please? "IF nucleus A was made from its constituents (Binding energy) and it released 400MeV, but making nucleus B(product) releases 405MeV. Therefore if A changes to B, 5 MeV of energy must be released. This excess energy is given to the particle emitted" Thanks guys!!

In all honesty. I need to know that I'm at a place when this year ends that there is enough time to still be ready for the Exams I'll be taking this time next year! My teacher has taught us parallel to his lower leveled classes and gave us the same materials as them. I'm not to sure what we have even covered this year other than projectiles, frequencies (we are studying now along with standing waves), gravitational stuff that deals with outer space, springs, circular and uniform motion, there was more... but that's all I can remember. We are spending now to the end of the year (June) on frequencies and apparently there is a lot more to be covered! Any suggestions. Tips. T…

Hi, i am doing math studies with physics at higher level, but i was wondering if there is anything learnt in either math higher or math standard that i would need to learn for physics that i wont learn in studies, i am capable of math standard, but it is only the fact that i probably get a 4 or 5 at math standard and 6 or 7 at studies. I will ask my form teacher (who teaches higher and during form gives us some questions from the higher level optional networking topic from higher before school to work out). What do you think he'd need to teach me that isn't in the studies syllabus.

We were told to do a lab involving rubber bands and projectile motion in some sense. My group shot the rubber band and measured the distance moved as a function of its extension. I graphed this and found that it seemed to be a linear relationship. Now, my question is if this is too simple to be DCP assessed? I don't really do any calculations, apart from the average and standard deviation, which is managed by Excel. We won't do many labs, so I want it bo be assessed. Anyone knows?

Hey everyone, Im in SL Physics and one of the options I'll definitely be doing for tomorrow's paper is Astrophysics. But what else should I choose to study? Sight and Wave Phenomena or Quantum, because our teacher rushed through both just in case. Looking at the syllabus, I'm inclined to do Quantum because I like Atomic and Nuclear much more than SHM, but what are your thoughts?

Hi! Quite urgent: I'm wondering whether any of you could recommend a good textbook for physics? It should be such that it would have a lot of theory but also a lot of exercises with solutions. We have Giancoli at school and I find it good because it has a lot of exercises but I don't like the way it's written so I need something similar to it but it shouldn't be Giancoli. I'm actually SL but the book that we have for SL is really bad in my opinion (we have Pearson Bac. Phy. SL) and I'd rather have a HL book for I really need a good grade for physics. But in case you have a SL book that is really good, please recommend it as well. Thank you TD

hello, in my class we have covered Astrophysics, and I am not that bad in it. However, there is a big problem (I am session May2011): I have either not been to class, or haven't been listening, so I have to teach myself another whole option. My class rushed through Option G (Electromagnetic waves). But as I said, I wasn't there or wasn't listening, so basically don't know ANYTHING from that Topic. I am HL, and now I need to teach myself another option besides Astrophysics (E). Do you know any option that you feel is easy enough for a self-study?

Hello everyone I wanted to confirm this with you cause I wanna see the min score to get a lvl 6 which converts to 90+ on my Ontario grade (report card). So the minimum amount of points out of 100 to get a level 6 is 60. Therefore I need 60 points in total to get a level 6 which is 90+ on my report card. So it is already confirmed, my Ia's are 22 points. 60- 20 = 40. So i need 40 points in total from paper 1,2 and three in total. Paper 1: lets say I get a 50% raw that is 10 points because the weighting is 20% of my final mark. Paper 2: lets say I get a 50% raw that is 16 points because the weighting is 32% of my final mark. Paper 3: lets say I get a 50% raw that is 12 poi…
