There's a biology and chemistry help thread, figured a physics one would be appreciated by a few people Hoping some people will check here and help people who have questions, I'll try my best but my knowledge of physics does not go very far honestly and it's not my best science

Update (May 2014) - Added all of topic 3: Thermal Physics I've been an IB teacher for many years, and enjoy helping out more than just my own students. With this in mind, I am working on a series of free videos on my own studynova website (they are all free there, plus you can get all the notes I make), but am also mirroring them on Youtube. These videos are about specific topics within the IB Physics SL or HL curriculum. So if there are specific topics that you'd like to see done in detail with lots of examples, just post it in this thread. I'll take a look and see if there is any overwhelming consensus on any topics, and then start doing videos on those ones. I can go…

Hello people, Are there any sites with Physics IB exercises to practice on? Not past papers.

Thought I would follow the trend and make one of these threads for poor, forgotten Physics. B) My class is doing Biomedical Physics and Optics. I actually think there are a lot of fascinating options for Physics. I was reading through my textbook, and the one where people fly into outer space and age slower is really interesting. Not that I believe that it would actually happen. I don't care which genius came up with that theory, I refuse to believe it. Prove me wrong.

Hi! I'm a physics SL student from the US and in my high school, all of our non-language based SL courses are 1 year long courses rather than 2 years. What this means is that the physics SL course I'm taking right now is in the old physics curriculum (the one with the options), however, a lot of the students in my class really want to take physics HL next year. But there's going to be a lot of problems with that since the old IB physics is being phased out next year and even if we were able to sit for the physics HL class next year using the current curriculum, what that'd mean is that my IB physics teacher would need to teach 3 different physics curricula in the same…

Hello, I am in year 1 if IB and my teacher asked me to pick a topic for my physics EE. I want to do something related to half life and I have the equipment available. I just need to know if this topic is good or if I should change to another topic since I have never seen any samples of EEs on it and would thus be working with no reference. If someone could let me know it would be great. Thanks!

hey. im currently in my IB1 year and take physics as an HL. my only problem is that MY TEACHER DOESNT TEACH???!???!?! he just asks us to read whats on the powerpoint slide that he took from a website, then he takes a look at an example and briefly explain how and why they got that answer. he just doesn't make sense and I really dont want his teaching to affect how well I do. Im currently struggling a lot and I need help before its too late. does anyone know any good websites/ tutoring videos that can help me ?? PLEASE HELP ASAP!!!

On the IB HL Physics exam, if not stated in the problem, do we assume there is or isn't air resistance. For example if a question involves a pendulum and a magnetic field, should we assume that there is air resistance?

I am doing my physics extended essay on how the change in wavelength of incident light on a solar cell affects its efficiency. However, after collecting data and drawing a graph, I figured that there is no correlation. Does this mean scoring high on the EE is not possible now?

Hello! I am doing my physics Sl IA on refractive index (how does refractive index of water change with sugar concentration). I've calculated the uncertainty of concentration and of the angle of refraction, but I'm a bit stuck when it comes to calculating the uncertainty of the refractive index. Since it is part of Snell's law, I'm not sure how uncertainties can be calculated when there are trigonometric functions like sin. Can someone help me out. Is there a general formula?

Hi. So I'm a Physics HL student in IB and I'm designing a circuit for my Physics IA. (think of it as a lab/project if you're not familiar with IB) I'm required to have an independent variable of 7 dif. values and a dependant variable. For my IA, I'm trying to build a diode bridge full rectification circuit. What I will do is I will connect different capacitors of different capacitance values, and connect the circuit to an oscilloscope to read the ripple values generated. According to formulas I've seen online, my hypothesis is that when I increase the capacitance, the ripple will decrease. By showing the relationship between capacitance and ripple, I plan to conclude…

Like both but can only choose 1. I’m not really sure how to decide. Ive already chosen chem but feel like physics is more suitable as I’m taking hl maths and also I do not like organic chem. from what I’ve heard both are equally challenging subjects. What made you decide to choose one over the other? Btw I’m not pursuing a science degree in the future thanks

Hi. So, for my physics IA topic I was thinking of doing an experiment on spinning tops. Could I measure the force of my hand when it spins the top somehow? If I could I would keep that a constant variable. but if not, could i use an external force to cause the top to spin, like a beyblade uses? For my independent variable I was thinking of changing the size of the top. and dependent would be the amount of time the top spins. and my research question would be "How does changing the size of a spining top affect the amount of time it spins" How does this idea sound? Does it make sense, and would it be a good physics experiment? Thanks in adva…

I calculated an uncertainty of 100% in my IA. I’ve tripled checked my calculations and am pretty sure they are correct. My experiment was not very great and have written about it extensively in my conclusion and identified how I should improve. Will the high uncertainty affect my grade?

My topic is "The effects of container on the freezing points of different salt solutions." and my advisor pointed out an issue with the experiment which was, I could not determine the specific time that the solution reaches its freezing point if I was to conduct the experiment. Any tips on how I could determine the specific time of freezing or if simulation would be more effective any simulation software's for recommendation. Thank you

I'm in IBDP year 2 and we're in the process of finalizing our IAs. We got our feedback for our first drafts and my teacher told me my IA can't get above a 5. I don't know why my teacher approved my topic in the first place knowing I couldn't score well, but alas, here we are. The problem is that my topic is super simple. I was investigating the acceleration of a falling mass on a ramp, which is really basic for a HL IA. Regardless, I'm not opposed to just restarting with a new reasearch question, but I have no idea what else I can do with the data I have. My investigation was changing the angle of the ramp and timing the acceleration of the mass according to the angl…

Right now i've taken Math AA HL, Physics HL, Economics HL and English A SL, Chinese AB-initio, Chemistry SL I've tried Math HL for a bit and its incredibly hectic, coming from International maths from IGCSE even the basic concepts are hard for me, so i'm considering stepping down to AA SL because i could get a 6,7 for SL rather than struggle and take down all my HL's, as physics HL also a very intensive course (also math based) is a huge course too, i've decided to take SL math in order to invest time and effort in Physics and Sl math in order to get a good IB result, But what i worry about is that if i take this step down, will universities in the US or Canada (wher…

Hello, I was wondering if I could get some help regarding my Physics EE? I am examining how changing the mass of a copper plate at the end of a pendulum effects the stopping distance of that plate when passing through a horseshoe magnet directly beneath it. Due to the changing magnetic field the copper plate is temporarily magnetized which generates a secondary magnetic field. This secondary field resists the one that induced it and slows down the copper plate. I am having trouble with my hypothesis and determining what will happen. I was wondering if increasing the mass of the copper plate would increase its stopping distance due to the greater force acting on…

Hey, I'm struggling to come up with an idea for my Physics SL IA since I am having online classes due to COVID. I've been thinking about the relationship between the rate of temperature cooling down of an object and the thermal capacity of a surface. But the environmental temperature will be an issue since I don't have air conditioners. Therefore, I was thinking also about doing something related to the The Coandă Effect and the mass of smth. What do you think? I really need some help . I need to do everything at home, what do you suggest me?

Hey there everyone, here are my notes for Chapter 2: Mechanics and Chapter 6: Circular Motion and Gravitaiton, and posted them online for free. I used these to study for the exams however, since they were cancelled, they never got much use - but still got a 7, so they might help you out, I gave them some final touches and I'm quite about how they turned out. Give them a look if you got some time, and feedback is much appreciated!!! Chapter 2 and Chapter 6 Notes

I am currently writing my physics IA and I do not know what to do. My teacher is new so she doesn't understand the IB system and I don't know if I can even use my current experiment. From what I have now, I can make graphs and compare results - but I can't do any calculations whatsoever. How badly will this affect my grade, are calculations a requirement or is it just a formality? I would get the same result, but calculating would just be another approach. Please help me if anyone can!

Hello there, I am a student that takes physics HL. I have been looking for a topic that is not very complex to be able to go in-depth into but I don’t know if it’s a good idea to take an easy topic. I am doing the relationship between time period and length of a string. It looks like an easy IA and done many times previously, (according to my teacher doesn’t matter if it is done a lot I just have to interpret it in my own way) Do you recommend me to continue with this topic or not? Also how can I increase the complexity incase it is needed? (I looked at different amplitudes but the difference is almost nothing so I decided to avoid amplitude) Thanks a lo…

I have been cracking my head on this one MCQ for too long now. For the following question, I am getting the answer W > P + R which is wrong: The diagram shows a girl attempting (but failing) to lift a heavy suitcase of weight W. The magnitude of the vertical upwards pull of the girl on the suitcase is P and the magnitude of the vertical reaction of the floor on the suitcase is R. Write an equation correctly relates W, P and R. The answer is W = P + R As the question said that she is failing to lift the suitcase, I thought the Weight acting downwards would be more than the sum of P and R. Why is that wrong? Also, just to confirm, R is the force actin…

Hi everyone. I have been researching a topic for my physics IA for a while now, and have already got all my equipment + formula ready to start. To my shock though, after doing more research I found my experiment is quite similar to an example EE on the IB website, but only after I already started! I have never had any intention to copy, but I want to be sure it doesn't seem like I did. Thankfully, I believe my work is a big improvement on it. Firstly, I derive many of the formulae the example simply states without explaining, showing my understanding of the concepts and explaining them step-by-step. The example and mine are trying to prove the same relationship (alth…

Hi, I am doing my physics ia project about lift force. I have done a lot of research on how to measure the lift force with Bernoulli principle, and after I done the experiment. I found that it may not followed that principle As a result, I searched the other ways to explain the lift force, and realized probably Bernoulli principle was not the best explanation. However, I did found some trend and relationship between variablesin my data, which obeys the Bernoulli principle but not correct according to the real life. That's why I come here and ask for help. THANKS!
