There's a biology and chemistry help thread, figured a physics one would be appreciated by a few people Hoping some people will check here and help people who have questions, I'll try my best but my knowledge of physics does not go very far honestly and it's not my best science

Thought I would follow the trend and make one of these threads for poor, forgotten Physics. B) My class is doing Biomedical Physics and Optics. I actually think there are a lot of fascinating options for Physics. I was reading through my textbook, and the one where people fly into outer space and age slower is really interesting. Not that I believe that it would actually happen. I don't care which genius came up with that theory, I refuse to believe it. Prove me wrong.

Update (May 2014) - Added all of topic 3: Thermal Physics I've been an IB teacher for many years, and enjoy helping out more than just my own students. With this in mind, I am working on a series of free videos on my own studynova website (they are all free there, plus you can get all the notes I make), but am also mirroring them on Youtube. These videos are about specific topics within the IB Physics SL or HL curriculum. So if there are specific topics that you'd like to see done in detail with lots of examples, just post it in this thread. I'll take a look and see if there is any overwhelming consensus on any topics, and then start doing videos on those ones. I can go…

Hello IB physicists! I just made an app that includes comprehensive notes for the 2016 first assessment IB Physics syllabus. The app has detailed notes with colorful pictures for all topics plus option D (astrophysics) (engineering physics coming soon) and are made perfectly according to the new syllabus by subtopics so it makes sure that you don't miss out any content that you need to learn for the exams! The link to the app is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.gonative.android.qnjjl&hl=en. Feel free to check it out! Happy revising! :') Update: All notes are also available on https://ibphysics.org/!

Hey Guys, For AGES, our class has been having disputes about how the average uncertainty is calculated in physics. Here are 2 options that we are confused between So if we want to know the Avg uncertainty and values are 44.3 ± 0.2 , 44.7 ± 0.2, 44.9 ± 0.2 and 44.1± 0.2 1) Average uncertainty = (Max value - Min value)/Total number of values Avg uncertainty = (44.9-44.1)/4 We got this from an IB Physics uncertainties book... I can't remember how old it was but i think maybe around 2007 or more recent. But this seems outrageous! You honestly can't just do that can you?!?! 2) We think it should be the way we do it in chem and maths and everywhere else! Avg uncert…

hello, This may be a retarded question. Anyways, im taking physics hl, which was not a wise choice, i often use obscene language when describing the class. anyways, some of my subject teachers have given me ib question banks, for example, bus&man hl, math, and my eco teacher gives us past papers. But my physics teacher refuses to give us question banks or past papers, so its really difficult to get a real idea of what is going to be on the exams. Do they give you the physics question banks at your school? or past papers, or something like that? or does anyone know any links where i can get my hands on them. Thanks

With November exams coming up within just over 3 months, its really time to start studying. Need some tips? Have a read of an article that I wrote in 2010: IB Physics, especially at the Higher Level, is one of the most difficult subjects in the IB Diploma. Nonetheless, it is still very possible to attain a 7. In fact, according to the IB Statistical Report in November 2009, 31% of Standard Level Candidates and 20% of Higher Level Candidates received a 7. This means that on average, in a class of 20 HL students, 4 will get a 7. So how do you get into that top 20%? To find out, I've asked many successful past IB Physics students regarding their techniques, as well as IB Phy…

I found this a while ago, and have been using it every since. It has the answer for every problem in K.A. Tsokos's Physics for the IB Diploma (SL and HL). It not only includes answers, but also shows and explains the work done to get those answers. It is broken down by chapter and section, with each section as a downloadable PDF. http://www.katsokos....ySolutions.php Enjoy!

Hi guys! Right now I am taking Physics SL first year, and apparently I have one of the worst physics teacher I can ever get. The teacher barely teaches the class anything and I am extremely worried for the course as a whole. I am planning to get someone to tutor me but I wanted to know whether this course is difficult or not. AND if I wanted to start teaching or reviewing the course material myself, is there any good book out there to help me? Thanks!

So, as soon as I got back from the summer break, my physics teacher put up an assignment to send her our IA topics, methods and materials needed. I had no idea what I wanted to do, so I came up with the idea of testing how the force of attraction and repulsion between two magnets varies with distance. As we haven't studied magnetism yet, I thought this would be interesting to test. I would use a scale to see how the "weight" measured of the magnet changed as I approached a magnet from the top, while measuring the distance between them. However, on the first class we had after sending her the topic, she told everyone on the class our topics were "too simple", and we shou…

I'm in a bit of a predicament. My high school just got IB so the structure is odd and our choices as students are a bit limited. All students are required to take HL English and HL history of the Americas leaving one additional HL of our choosing. The choices for that were: HL math, HL biology, and HL physics. I had already taken biology freshman year, so in the interest of avoiding three years total of biology I discarded that class from my selection. I threw out math as well because I didn't think I could handle the exam. So here I am, in HL physics with no prior physics experience (save the iota of mechanics taught in physical science). In my physics class, the school…

How much math is involved (I chose math SL)? Anything helpful would be appreciated, as I'm pretty nervous!

Hi guys! I find the new Physics book by Tsokos to be pretty easy if you just read the explanations, but the last questions of each chapters are much harder than the explanations. The problem is that in our Physics class we don't really study through the book, even though the things we do is related to the IB course. Instead our teacher gives us problems from the overhead to solve and in the middle of the lesson he has a lecture. But I really want to do the questions, which means that I have to work on my own.... So the main problem is, if you don't understand how to solve a problem, where can you get the step by step instructions which will get you to the answ…

I am currently doing Physics HL and my exams are in May, finding it kind of difficult (some parts are somewhat easy while some very hard to compherehend). Yet even for the easy parts the IB manages to set difficult questions thus screwing you over. What are your thoughts on a specific textbook/study guide that works well for you? I'm not really having a panic attack but am a bit worried. I currently have the Tsokos and Oxford Physics Study Guide by Tim Kirk as a textbook and study guide. Oh and we are currently just starting the HL bit for Electricity (Electromagentic Induction), is that normal considering we are this far in the course?

I recently got the results for my physics IA draft and to my surprise, I got a 9/24. I had been marked down in several areas, for which I thought I would be able to score high marks in. My topic revolves around calculating the conversion factor from joules to calories, but I don't have any research that I could use on this. I am trying to relate this to resistors but I can't seem to find anything. Could someone please recommend some exemplar level 7 lab reports for physics as well as some guides to help me score a higher mark for my final draft? Thanks in advance!

We were told to do a lab involving rubber bands and projectile motion in some sense. My group shot the rubber band and measured the distance moved as a function of its extension. I graphed this and found that it seemed to be a linear relationship. Now, my question is if this is too simple to be DCP assessed? I don't really do any calculations, apart from the average and standard deviation, which is managed by Excel. We won't do many labs, so I want it bo be assessed. Anyone knows?

Hey guys!! So as it is July, my November exams are only a few months away. Currently, my worst subject is physics HL. I find it really difficult to grasp (and memorise) all the different concepts and I'm slightly stressed out at the moment as the only topics I'm kinda confident in are topics 2, 3 and 4. So my current plan is to go through the Oxford textbook and take summary notes of each topic. Then after taking the summary notes I plan on doing questions for that topic. I'm not sure how effective this method would be, and it would also be very time consuming. Also I heard that the May 2016 Physics paper was a horrific :') *crying* I'm just wondering if a…

Hi, I was given a Physics IA, but I was absent the day the teacher introduced it, so I don't realy know what I'm doing. Are there any standard IA's? The idea was that we make apendulum and change the lengths and measure the time it takes the pendulum to complete one swing. And then something about the period. Does anyone know what I should be investigating? Thanks!

I've heard from a science teacher at my school that the new syllabus which is used for the year 11s this year, made physics HL an extremely long course. She even said that it's so long it's literally impossible to finish teaching every topic before the exam. Does this 'new syllabus' exist? If it's true, can someone who's doing physics or know someone who do tell me a bit about the difficulty? (I know it's definitely one of the hardest subjects and am willing to work hard, but is it really that bad?)

Hello everyone, In the Physics class today, we just got the news that we had to do an experiment to find out the relation between the length of a pendulum and the time period for the oscillation. And the big bomb was that it would go to IB for grading. It was an Internal Assessment. We just got this question and an equation. Now we have to make a DCP CE experiment...what the hell is that?! I am being honest, I don't know much about practicals. In my entire life, I have never done a practical before coming to IB. Now suddenly I am being bombarded with these DCP CE and IA stuff which I have never even heard about! But I did do the experiment and I have a bunch of readings.…

Hello, After I don't get good significant data results for my IA experiments, I decided to change it The new one would be: on leakage (area) and the affects on the volume of leaked (water) The experiment would be on the relationship gained fro measuring the leakage (very small like needle diameter) and the time taken and also volume loss of water. The initial volume of water would be 1500 ml. Therefore, the area of leakage would be the number of holes in the container. The physics involve would be atmospheric pressure and also rate of drainage (does not seem so physics though). Any comments or improvements?? (harsh ones are also welcome)

TLDR: Should I use an online simulation for my physics IA or will the moderator not appreciate it as much as a hands on experiment? I want to do my physics IA on Coulomb's law, and would like to use an online simulation to 'obtain' the equation, since it is quite easy and practical that way, and I don't have the necessary lab equipment available. However, I was wondering whether using a simulation is a good idea. It seems that it might be rejected as good methodology and engagement by moderators, because it is in some way circular reasoning and perhaps not as legitimate. Will the moderator(s) view it as a bad investigation if I basically find the relationship the force,…

So hello fellows! I have searched the internet around to find any good ideas for a design lab in physics since my physics teacher told us today that we should perform the last design lab today (yeah, great planning I know) however we could also do it at home. However my fantasy sucks and since I'm not that good in physics either I have no idea what I should do, we have already done a "ball- design lab" and a "spring- design lab" but now we are allowed to do anything we want. Therefore I ask you if you can provide any help, like a lab with microwave or something and how this may be applied on physics? It would be great with like as many different ideas as possible

I got a "v" shaped graph. And now I' stuck as I cannot make any sound argument. Has anybody else carried out this experiment before? So I'm supposed to write a design lab report for my Physics practical experiments. I have no idea what it is. My experiment is based on a parachute experiment. My aim is how does the mass placed on the parachute affect the time taken for the parachute to land? But my teacher said that I don't have to do the practical, and gain raw data from the experiment. I just have to formulate a design. How am I supposed to answer my aim question, if I don't acquire the raw data by doing the experiment? And what exactly is a Design lab report. I'm really confused.

I had an inclined plane from which i realeased a ball from different heights and a ball b, at rest, on a plane surface after the incline. once they collide ball b moves and a continues moving in the same direction with a slower speed. HL Physics Paper 1 & 2 /TZ0/ Was I the only one that found Paper 2 to be really hard? I found that both section A and options from section B were much different to past papers between 09-13. The types of questions were generally different as well as the way they were asked. If anyone else also felt this way please share. If possible discuss some of the questions you found hard, and some you found easy.

Hi, I'm in my second year of IB (just started) and I'm worried that my class isn't on track for physics. I'm an HL student, and we've done 6/8 of the core topics but no AHL and no options yet. So I have some questions: 1) What does AHL mean? Is this just for HL students? Do we have to do all of those topics, and why are they not in my Pearson Bacc. textbook? 2)If both HL and SL students do the same core topics, does that mean that core questions that we get in the exams will be exactly the same? aka can I revise by doing SL papers instead of HL papers (I can't get my hands on HL papers)? 3) Paper 1 is multiple choice, what are papers 2 and 3? Where does AHL come up? Thank…
