Hey everyone! Last Wednesday, we decided of our Group 4 project theme and Arts was the selected one. I'm on the physics team, with 4 other guys... Well, we came up with some ideas, like creating our own photographic flash with a capacitor to measure light exposure over the flash period. We also thought of measuring the frequency of musical instruments, such as the guitar. What do you guys think? Do you have any ideas in mind for a physics experiment in Arts? Thanks a lot

Hey guys, we would appreciate any feedback about our G4 project. My partner, Ericare slamming our heads against walls to get this done, and now, we are just stuck. He had to go for dinner, so I'm going to finish writing this for him. However, the next most trained individual (3-4x/weekly of pushups) only went from 41 to 46 after caffeine. The subjects who either trained 0-1x/weekly had minimal increase in pushups, and some even went down. By the looks of this, the data is going to be very hard to assess, because the substance has made almost an even split of increasing OR decreasing certain people's pushup rate, so we cannot come to a conclusion as to what these subst…

Our teachers gave us the worst POS topic title ever, so we were forced to deal with what we had, and not do experimental work because it was too far-fetched. As I understand the main point of the G4P is to demonstrate successful collaborative skills in a group, how can one best go about demonstrating this in a theoretical project? Anyone done this before?

For the G4 project, are there supposed to be 3 distinct labs for the individual science groups, or can there be a general lab that has overlap? For example, a conductivity could be counted as both physics and chemistry, right? Or would there have to be seperate labs to distinguish the two?

I did the Group 4 project last year. When we got the scores back, I was extremely shocked to get 2/6. I got 0 points for both "self-reflection and evaluation" and "self-motivation and perseverance" but 2 points for "working within a team". I'm guessing that I dropped the 2 points for "self-motivation and perseverance" because I abdicated from being the leader after a couple of mere hours since I did not know my advisor or share any classes with her, unlike this guy in my group. Also, there was another girl in my group who didn't do any work at all, constantly tardy, turned in forms after the deadline, etc. but ended getting 6/6. The advisor always got our names confused a…

Hey guys, For group four my group and I have decided to carry out our experiment regarding toothpaste. The chemistry and biology part is pretty much covered, but the physics section is a little more difficult (when choosing a question that is), so does anyone have any suggestions. We were thinking the effect of force at which someone brushes their teeth, does it help remove sufficient bacteria and plaque and all... something along those lines Any help would be much appreciated

So, I need to do a group 4 project on the topic of food; I am a reluctant SL Chem student, with no idea what to do, especially as my partner moved from Chem to Bio about a month ago and neglected to tell me until now, a few weeks before the experiment is due. Our previous plan was to test several organic/edible preservatives on slices of bread from the same loaf, or some other identical food product (this is basically the only idea that our teacher didn't reject); we were going to use identical amounts of honey, salt, lemon-water, and other preservatives we could find on our subjects and leave them in sealed containers, checking them until results started cropping up (ho…

I am currently a junior (DP1) student. My classmates and I had a plan for G4 projects in physics and chemistry. But several of my classmates left school during the year. We had a group of 7 at the beginning of the year, but now there are only 3 remain(could be even worth). I wonder if there is a minimum number of student restriction or etc. If not, how should we divide our work (1 physics, 1 chemistry and 1 studying both). Thanks

Hi guys, first off I would like to thank whoever takes the time to read and help me out with my questions. My group and I came up with an idea today about our group 4 project (which we will do on the 12th and 13th of June), we want to analyse our school's football field and find a reason for why it is not able to grow properly . Since 6 years ago, when i first joined the school, the P.E. Department has not been able to keep a flat surface of clean grass and we wish to assist them in finding a solution. I was wondering how you could tackle this problem from different sciences and whether the problem sounds do'able and appropriate in the first place? What i was thinking ti…

Hi guys, My question is - say there are some people in IB at your school who do absolutely no work, aren't motivated at all, and all that. If you get put in a group with people like that, would their inability and the fact that they do nothing have an impact on your mark? So would my mark get dragged down if I get stuck in a group with people who do nothing? is essentially my question. Also, if that were to happen and it forced me to do all the work, would the fact that I did heaps of work to not compromise my grade give them a good mark as well? Thanks.

My group 4 project is on 14-15 April. Teachers introduced us to the G4 project last month, I’ve been away from school for one month and my group hasn’t done much for this G4 project. I just read my school weekly newspaper and the front page reminded me of this G4 project!! It says: Students will not have normal lessons during those 2 days, but instead will plan and perform individual experiments with results being presented on the second day. I still do not really get what this G4 project is all about. What do we do? Do we have to conduct experiments? How many ones? Do we have to conduct one physics experiment, one chemistry experiment and one biology experiment?? Then w…

Hello, my group is having a little trouble relating experiments. So we these following experiments : Biology: pH, dissolved oxygen Chemistry: Water hardness, Metals Physics: How does the angle affect the reflection of light in water/ so this affexts temperature and oxygen in the water How can we relate all these experiments in our conclusion? We were thinking relating it to organism living in that lake. Would they be able to survive because there is a lot of affluent water coming into the lake.

Our group came up with this experiment and I was wondering if this topic can be done for the group .4 Research question: Can a student improve their rate of completion of a multiplication test by either listening to music, conversing with a student, or just doing it without distractions? Independent variable: condition in which the test is taken Dependent variable: rate of completion. I was also wondering if this relates to biology, chemistry, physics, or earth science.

currently, i think my team is in big trouble. I think our design's gonna be due in less than a week, but I forgot the exact deadline. So far we've got the chemistry and biology portion off the ground, but we still have yet to start on physics O_O I thought it would be easy considering our topic must be light/electromagnetic radiation in general.... What are experiment possibilities for infrared radiation? Right now I'm considering comparing visible light with IR and how they penetrate materials. The problem is that the supervisor doesn't like the "on and off" nature of this experiment (dependent variable: yes it goes through/no it doesn't) What are some good alternati…

Our teachers want us to write a report on our group 4 project, yet they didn't bother explaining how it should be written and, since we can't ask them during the vacations, our group is quite lost. What exactly should we do? Is it similar to a science lab report, in which we report the method we used, report the data we collected, etc? Our should some "fluff" be added, like the ethical and social implications of our work? Do we need to research anything that could apply to our project? I know this may sound silly, but our teachers just sent us an email in the middle of the vacations basically saying "oh, write the group four report" without giving any help or explanation.…

My group four is writing/researching about experiments on automobiles that relates to one of the sciences. We are supposed to talk about the environmental, social and ethical implications of science and technology with this experiment. Our group chose to talk about the new radar systems in automobiles where they can prevent crashing. One of my group members proposed to make a simple experiment of testing human reaction time while driving vs radar technology using a simulator (theoretically of course). I feel kind of sketchy about this situation. Any hints, tips, improvements? Thanks, need assistance ASAP.

Well, to get things started, our teacher suggested this idea to us : "Do your project on baseball. For example, in Colorado's Rookies stadium, more home runs are hit there than any other stadium in the United States. This has been proven. Can you hypothesize as to why this is the case? This would involve Biology and Physics." Guidelines for our project state that we do not have to perform an actual experiment. For all our teacher cares, we can collect a variety of data, analyze it and then present our findings and interpretations of it. He also said that this project can realistically be done within one weekend. "If a group spends the majority of Saturday and Sunday dedic…

What is the best way to determine the concentration of nitrate/ phosphate ions in solution? Our Group 4 project has to be about water, and my group decided to look at the pollutants in a creek that runs through our city. I'm trying to determine the concentrations of the nitrate and phosphate ions in a sample of the creek water. I'd like to use a spectrophotometric method, for both if possible, but they're presenting challenges. I know of the molybdenum blue test for phosphate but I'm pretty sure my school chem lab doesn't have any molybdate. I've also heard about the aquarium nitrate and phosphate test kits that you can buy in stores, but obviously I can't just go buy a k…

Hi guys, I have a bit of a problem regarding my group 4 project. I have this complusory thing I absolutley HAVE to attend and it coincides with the group 4 project. Since I can't really do the project individually (I guess) does this mean I will not receive a mark for it? Or get a super bad mark? Or won't receive the diploma!? Please help and provide me with alternative solutions/information regarding the usual IB protocol in these matters.

Group 4 - Atomic Bomb

Ok from reading a bunch of topics on the forums, I gathered that we have to actually conduct an experiment. Is this true? Because my teacher approved my topic of the atomic bomb, and I don't think it's possible to create one with technology accessible to a high schooler, nor would it be ethical to try using one >_>; Can we just do research and present what we found?

Hi guys, I'm fairly new to this forum and this is my first thread so please be gentle with me. I recently received the Group 4 Project and we can basically do it on anything. My group chose to do it on Energy drinks. I came up with ways for Chemistry and Biology and am in serious need for Physics. Energy Drinks Chemistry: Compounds within the drinks / testing the buoyancy of the drink / how it reacts to temperature changes Biology: How it affects the body / How exactly does it give you "energy"? Side effects? etc Physics: ??? Thank you so much for your help. Any advices on the other two sciences is also greatly appreciated.

So it seems like my school is the only school doing this-- But during Group Four, we were supposed to have a lab journal that holds stuff from the very first day we started and till the day of our presentation. For each planning meeting, for the experimental day itself, and for the presentation, we were supposed to write a reflection. I've managed to pull something out for the first four, but the final reflection seems to be the most important itself. How would you all write a reflection for your final group four reflection? What kind of questions should I technically be answering in my reflection? Any tips would be nice : ) Gracias!
