hi, i am currently doing IB and i really need some advice. I want to go to medical school to become a pediatrician or a dentist. however, ive not taken math SL, biology or chemistry or physics for my IB subjects. MY IB SUBJECTS ARE: ENGLISH-HL MATH STUDIES ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE SL FRENCH AB INITIO DESIGN TECHNOLOGY HL ECONOMICS-HL I am terrible at maths and i didnt take physics even in IGCSESs. I have however done Biology and Chemistry for IGCSEs,and i am going to do my SATs this coming october. so i was wondering, would i be eligible to go to a medical school with math studies AND SATs? and if not is there any other way i could get into medical school by maybe doing a…

Hey all! My dance instructor who's like training me for my final showcase for my Kathak degree is a Harvard and Princeton alumnus and she offered to write one of my recommendations to these two schools. I should specify that I am in the last stage of my Kathak degree in Indian Classical Music and it is an accredited course recognised by Indian universities to get into further study programmes for Dance. I'm studying for theory exams (and have given 5 in the past) and everything. So I was wondering, do you think a teacher/supervisor from a non-school academic pursuit can write one of my recommendations? Do you think it makes a difference since she's an alumnus of those two…

I'm currently deciding on my course options for IB, and I really want to take math studies. Math has always been my weak point - I pretty much have perfect grades in everything else. I took IGCSE extended math this year (I didn't take core because I did NOT want a C as my highest grade) and I've found it pretty challenging. I'm really interested in the humanities, and for like half my life, I've known that I want to be a psychologist / neuropsychologist. I know I need stats for that, and looking at the math studies curriculum, it's pretty stats intensive (more so, even, than math SL). Would american universities care whether I took math studies? If it helps, I'm intereste…

Okay so I Ned SAT prep course help. I got a 1700(roughly) on th SAT, and I want to improve. The thing is, my family cannot afford these prep courses. I've spoken to my counselor about this matter but she just told me to apply for the need based scholarships on any SAT prep courses website. I cannot find any. I have emailed her numerous times and she keeps givin me the same answer. I turn to you IB kids, do you know any courses that are cheap or offer scholarships for free lunch students? And can your High School pay for you? For your coverage? Has any one experienced this before? I find it unfair. Thank you.

I was recently accepted by the University of Waterloo for the mechanical engineering courses (co-op) starting in Fall. I have to reach a decision by June 3rd and would appreciate any input from Europeans (or non-Canadians) that have made, or will make, the move across the Atlantic, as well as Canadians for more general questions. Some points: How was it adjusting to the new environment? Is the public transport any good or do I need a car? Are the costs higher than initially expected? Do international students have restrictions on jobs (to help with tuition and other costs)? What were some initial problems you encountered? And what is Waterloo, the city and the universit…

I'm currently a junior in the IB program at my school. As of right now, I have a 3.5 unweighted GPA and a 4.1 weighted. I have always taken honors/AP/IB courses, and I enjoy them. I haven't taken my SAT/ACT yet, by my PSAT score was 190. Not terribly impressive, I know, but I've been studying and hope to increase my score to the 2100-2300 range. My extra-curriculars are: ASB Junior Class President, ASB Board Rep for the school district, Vice President of NHS, Lead Attorney on Mock for the past three years, and CSF member. I also started and volunteer at an after-school mentoring program at a local elementary school. Outside of school, I a member of my church choir and I v…

Hey all! As the thread title says: Are the PSATs considered harder to score in than the SATs? A lot of my seniors in school said that peeps do much better in the actual SATs compared to the PSATs. That got me wondering. Also, what is considered a good PSAT score? And is a score of like 229 a good enough indicator for high achievement on like the real SAT? Thanks for your input! IDOLS

So for the longest while I thought that because I was in IB I wouldn't have to write the SAT to apply to American universities, but as it turns out I do... :-( I know people in the US who study like crazy for the SAT and I am worried that if I put too much emphasis on the SAT my IB marks will take a dive downwards. For those of you have written the SAT and completed the IB program - was it difficult to study for SATs or does IB somewhat prepare you for it? Also, how can I achieve my best possible score? xxxx

So I'm in the process of choosing my IB courses and for some reason, I feel like I will not be a competitive applicant at top universities if I only take 3 HLs... However, the school I will be attending next year doesn't offer Philosophy or Geography (which would've been my 4th HLs) I am considering taking Psychology online at Higher Level, but the scientific side scares me a little. Otherwise I would take Philosophy but at SL. (online too)

Hey guys! When I entered the IB, I had absolutely no idea about what I wanted to study in university. I ended up choosing Chemistry HL because I thought it would be a good idea if I ever decided to go into sciences. However, I recently switched to Chem SL because I found the course too difficult. As well, instead of taking another science, I decided to take Theatre HL because it is one of my passions. Not the best course combination, I know. After volunteering during a spring break camp for younger kids, I realized that I really enjoy taking care of kids and that I could consider a career involving this. So I thought about maybe going into nursing or becoming a child psyc…

Hi! I'm in the IB diploma in India. I'm doing the full diploma (Math SL, English SL, Spanish Ab Initio, Chemistry HL, Biology HL, Physics HL). Hi. I'm an international student and I'm looking for an English-spoken country for university. Therefore I want to apply to Canadian universities. My grades have been mostly 6's and 7's so far, and as my interim total, I got 39 (including ToK and excluding self-taught). However, tuition fees are so high and I simply can't afford them. My question is that, what are the ways to overcome this problem? How should a student like me, who really wants to study and will be hard-working but isn't simply rich enough to pay the high tuition fees, be able to attend a Canadian university? Thanks.

Hi guys! I am thinking of applying to the USA and due to some circumstances I will be applying after I receive my diploma, so I will actually have my final grades to show. However, it seems that USA unis really value the grades which you have been getting during your study (i.e. the GPA). The problem is that my school grades will probably be lower than my final grades, which makes me think which one is actually more important, and can they overlook my a little above average school grades if I have top final grades. So, what do you think?

Hi. I'm an international student and I want to apply to Canadian universities. My question is that, are there any universities which are famous of giving easy scholarships? I.e. universities where the chance of getting a scholarship which covers tuition fees or a big part of it is higher? The reason why I'm asking is that, being an international students means you can't take any loans and the fees are almost doubled. These two make it impossible for me to study in Canada without any scholarships (but I really want to). Thanks.

Hi, I'm a rising senior and a prospective applicant. A lot of the more prestigious schools seem to value research papers and lab reports written during internships, etc and I was wondering if anyone knew/had opinions on an EE being valid material to send in? As most IBers would know, a lot of supervisors and teachers consider the EE as a piece of pretty legit research writing (...for high schoolers), it's 4000 words of concentrated analysis. Would it be considered appropriate? If it helps, I'm writing mine in English Literature. I'm not going to apply as a lit major though, most likely something related to sustainability and environmentalism (something like EnvEng or envi…

Hey, I was wondering if it's a bad idea to apply twice to the same universities in the US? I'm pretty set on doing mechanical engineering at uni but the question that's been plaguing me is where? Initially, I wanted to go to a German one which teaches in English (Carl Benz or RWTH Aachen). The problem I have with these is that the former one is quite small and not so well known around the world and the second one has its bachelor in two languages and transitions towards German over time. That somewhat put me off (even though I'm German..) as well as the fact that I'm "bored" of Europe. It's difficult to explain.. How much does UTSG (University of Toronto, Saint George) consider the IB? How many points should I aim for, and what average; for those students that are applying and have been admitted already. I'll refrain from sharing scores, but I'm doing very well in the sciences and good in math. Will this help with the SAT II's ???? Can you give any advice in terms of content overlap between the SAT II and IB?? Obviously you need to study for the SAT II's but does IB help at all with these exams??? Any tips as to what I should do to better prepare for the applications, the financial aid, FAFSA....etc would really be helpful!!! Thanks Everyone
