I'm currently in the first year of IB and I'm looking at what majors interest me, and I see a lot of majors that have such similar names, I have no idea what to choose-these all sound interesintg: Biochemistry Biological chemistry Chemistry Microbiology Molecular biology What is the difference between all these, and which one(s) offer versatility for these things that I want to hopefully be able to accomplish (this is a list of things I think i may do) -Get a Masters in one of those areas -Get a Masters in pharmaceutical chemistry/pharmacology/toxicology -Get a MD -Be a forensic scientist who works with DNA -Be a forensic scientist who works with chemistry -Work in f…

Hi guys! I have 7 subjects - 4 HL's and 3 SL's. It's a really great deal for me to manage all of it, believe me. I think about getting rid of History SL as I do not really need it and it just takes more time of me. I want to study in the USA, at one of Ivy League universities, so maybe they would appreciate the fact that I study more subjects than it is required? What do you think? Does it really matter?

I applied to McGill university for Mechanical Engineering, and really don't think i'm going to get in based on my predicted grades compared to the averages they posted online. I was wondering if anyone knew my chances, and if people who have gotten in this year or in previous years could post their predicteds. Math HL: 6 Physics HL: 6 Economics HL:6 Chemistry SL: 7 English lang/lit SL: 6 French B SL: 5 My school gives 2 TOK and EE points to everyone so thats 36/42 or 38 /45 P.S. These predicted grades already got me a spot at UBC

So I'm one of those people who want to have a clear goal and route when it comes to what to do after high school, but I'm also one of those who have no clue how things work. I just started to do a little research on how to be a forensic scientist and it looks like I'll be doing something like this: Get a BSc, in biochemistry Get a MSc. in idk what. Biochemistry or forensic science if available. That leads to my first question: 1) Would it be a good idea to do biochemistry because forensic science is too career specific, and if i cant be a forensic science i might go for like a quality-management or something kinda job, which a forensic science degree will do nothing t…

Hi guys, I'm really panicking now. I'm scared I won't be accepted to any university due to by crappy math HL score. I have 6s in all my other subjects and a 5 in hl bio. I started with a 5 in hl math and dropped to a 4... and I can't get it back up since last year. I have been having frequent panic attacks and i'm just so stressed. I really did not want to post this up, but it really is my last resort. WHAT CAN I DO???? I am applying to both US and Canadian schools, but I'm afraid I'll be rejected to ALL of them due to my outstanding math HL score... I did the ACTs and scored pretty well (above 33), but I know that alone won't help if I have such a crappy math…

I am currently a pre-IB student (year 10) heading into my first year of IB in January 2015 and after reading through the forums I realised that my chances are very low of getting into top unis in America.. Especially after reading lot's of people's ECs, I realise I am pretty much screwed. Can someone please give me some ideas of what to do? Or could anyone show me what they are doing for a reference? Currently now I am doing: - Member of the MUN (no position so pretty much useless..) - I play the flute but only grade 5 - I do art classes but I haven't entered in competitions - I've won quite a few science awards in the state but that's pretty much it - Tuto…

Do US schools consider EE grade as an important aspect of admission process or do they consider it as something minimal as CAS and TOK? Honestly, I chose a wrong topic and am on the verge of getting D on the expected score. Since the EE expected score will be on my transcript, I am very worried about this. Would getting a score of D be fine with getting into schools like Carnegie Mellon, Purdue, and UCs or do they expect much higher grades from the applicants? Thanks!

Hi, I'm planning to take two SAT subject tests before the first semester in IB year 2 but I'm not sure which ones I should take. I'm thinking of Maths II and Biology E/M. I heard that Maths II is easy since the topics are covered in the IB Maths SL syllabus. What about Biology E/M? Has anyone taken the test and can share some experience? I want to know if I will be able to know most of the topics by the end of IB year 1 so what I will only have to do is only going through a little more stuff. Thanks

I'm in my first year of the IB program so I still have some time but I really would like to get the best idea of where I can go and then get into said university, so I want to be prepared!! Hey guys, this is my first year in IB. I am planning to take etiher SAT or Act with Writing but I don't know which one to choose? I want to prepare for them in IBDP1 so I wouldn't get all busy next year. I would like to get into a uni either in USA or Canada. So which one should I choose? I have always heard that ACT is more simple and more direct than the SAT, what do you say? Also one important question I have in my mind is that I am not taking bio as one of my IB classes, but if I take SAT Bio test would that count for getting into some programmes like Molecular Biology, Biochemistry etc. ? Also, when do you think I should take those tests? When should I start preparin…

I know most of you will probably ask why I'm in full IB if I'm going into arts anyways, but I wanted a challenge and it would keep doors open if I change my mind about things. So far, I have considered 3 universities and one of them I'm using as a last resort. The other two are UBC and U of T. I want to know how hard it is to get into the Arts programs at those schools because those are the ones I really want to go to. Do they look at your extra-curriculars a lot as well as volunteer work? What are the minimum averages for each school? So far, my overall average is around 93 or 94 and I have a couple of classes in the high nineties. Do you think I have a good chance of ge…

My school does not offer Mathematics HL or Physics HL. I am currently taking Economics, English A2 and Spanish A1 HL(English and Spanish HL are compulsory in my school) and Chemistry, Physics and Math SL, but my school has offered me the possibility of studying Physics HL by myself instead of taking the Economics HL IB exam. However, I still don't have the possibility of studying Math HL, and, from what I've heard, Math HL is too hard to study by myself. However, I want to study theoretical physics or possibly even mathematical physics at a good university in the USA, like MIT. Is Math HL a requirement for this? What do you think of studying Physics or Math HL by myself? …

Hi guys, I am a student at a brazilian school and just received a predicted grade of 41/42. However, I am concerned that my official grades will be slightly lower than these. I am a student in IB2 with Physics HL, Chemistry HL, English HL, Economics HL. Maths SL and English SL and I have always dreamt of becoming an engineering particularly a mechanical or electrical engineer. I know that many universities in the UK would not accept me because I do not have HL maths however what is the case in the rest of the world such as Canada, the US and rest of Europe? Could anyone who was in the same shoes or is in the same shoes as me help me out ? PS: I know I am at a disadvantage in the UK for having taken SL math so it would be appreciated it that was not reiterated for I feel enough upset about it.

I have just started IB this year and I am currently taking bio hl and chem hl to hopefully pursue the medical field. Unfortunately, it has been brought to my attention that many universities will actually strongly value those with physics experience on their transcript. As we all know, IB does not conventionally allow someone to take all 3 sciences except under certain circumstances, and I'm starting to rethink my science choices because of this... I understand that medical school does require physics, but that can be learnt in university if so needed. The only thing that concerns me is that I'll be out competed by those who have done physics when applying to university.

Hello, I'm a Arab student studying abroad taking the following: English A LL: HL Arabic A: SL Math HL Physics SL Business Management HL Chemistry SL and I just got approved for doing the Arabic B HL instead of Arabic A SL which is a little out of my grasp since my Arabic language isn't that great. So I was wondering what effect this will have? Now I have 4 HLs, should I drop Math HL? Would it effect my admission if I have English HL and Arabic B HL? Keep in mind I'm trying to apply to UC system universities with a predicted score of 38/45, and if I drop an HL subject to SL I'd be around 40/45. Should I continue with 4 HLs? I took Spanish 1 in 7th grade, Spanish 2 in 8th, Spanish 3 in 9th, and Spanish 4 in 10th. Would it look better to colleges if I continued on to DP Spanish HL or took IB/DP ab initio Chinese? I am entering 11th grade so I am subject to only take Chinese for 2 years. I'm asking about elite, highly selective colleges. Because I've fulfilled the requirement of 4 years of a language, I question whether colleges would want trilingualism or "advanced" fluency in 2 languages.

So I'm writing my final exams in May next year, and ever since my first year ended last month, I've been seriously contemplating one thing. Up till now, I've been taking HL Physics, Chem, and Math (the full engineering package), along with SL English Literature, Ab Initio French, and History. My plan has always been to apply to the US or to Canada. Initially, I was planning on taking up mechanical engineering as my major, with a minor in history. But my interest for history has grown significantly, and my marks in chemistry have been slipping (It's not that I find chem difficult, I just can't seem to test well for chem). So I was wondering, if I was to decide on a history…

Hello, I am currently researching my EE but I need a little help with the topic. Hey, I am a 16 year old (turning 17). I skipped 9th and 10th grade. I've just graduated and got 40/45 on the IB. I'm taking a gap year now and will be taking SATs (so far I have an 800 on Math 2) and applying throughout the gap year. As a result, I will be applying to US universities with my IB score in hand, as opposed to with a predicted score. I want to get in to universities such as Harvard or MIT. How do universities value actual IB scores in comparison with predicted scores? Also, how much, if at all, will the fact that I did the IB at a younger age contribute to my applications? Do you think I have a good chance getting into such universities?

Hey guys, Amin here. I know CC is usually the place for chance me threads, but I've heard that those guys are seriously unrealistic, so if it's alright I'll ask here. Hey So I'm done with my first year of IB (Grade 11) and received my result for the second semester about an hour ago. Hi guys, I'm going to be a Senior in the fall, and I need to start applying to colleges. A lot of them in the US don't know about the IB program. Rather, it is known by many of them, and they do give credit, but a lot of the individuals who are in charge of admissions and scholarships don't know what it is. So how do you go about explaining what it is to a university (or anyone, for that matter)? If I have to explain it (concisely), how do I make it sound really impressive without making myself sound arrogant? Any ideas? I'm sure we've all had to explain it to someone before... I plan on taking Maths Level 2, Biology, Chemistry SAT II. I've just bought all the review books for each of them and well I really want to get rid of one of them this November session to lighten my workload. Biology looks like the only one in which it'd be feasible for me to self study and score 700+. However, I have yet to learn >50% of the content though so is it worth self studying or am I making things harder for myself? Should I wait till I do a bit of HL Biology next year or is there little overlap between the two?

A few weeks into my freshman year at the academy I was attending the principal called me to the office. He told me that my views differed from those of the school and that he didn't want me influencing any of my peers. This was a Christian academy and I had become an atheist towards the end of eighth grade (needless to say I was failing my mandatory Bible class for my contentious essays). Anyway, private academies reserve the right to terminate their students' enrollment at any time for any reason, so even though the reason that I got expelled was laughable (and probably discriminatory), there was nothing I could do about it and that expulsion now goes on my academic reco…
