Hii everyone I need some help I'm thinking of applying to med schools in usa and canada next semester but my school only offers either ib chemistry or ib biology. I don't know why but there are two separate programs in our school and you can choose only one. One offers chemistry, physics, maths, literature, english and ess and the other offers maths, literature, english, french, biology and titc (turkey in the twentieth century) as ib classes. As I had to make a choice this year I chose the second one because I wasn't certain with med school but I had a keen interest on biology alone. Now I don't know what to do. If you know anything pleaaase help me? Thank you in advanc…

Hey all, I would like to study business/finance/accounting or something along those lines. These are the subjects I take and I am really worried after bombing my exams I am looking at a predicted grade of around 37 or 38 (hopefully the latter). I haven't taken the SAT yet so I'm unsure on what to aim for. Please provide me with some advice and whether I am capable of getting into the universities I have listed. Thanks so much. Subjects I study & what i'm currently at after Y12 finals: HL Economics - 6/7 HL Physics - 6 HL History - 5 -> Hopefully I can get a 6 PG but idk SL Math - 5 -> I know I can make this a 6 for fina…

Hello, I'm an international student currently living abroad doing the IB program. I'm in Grade 11 and I have a few concerns about university. I'm fluent in French but English is my first language. I have plans to study either international relations or psychology in university. I'm very worried that I won't even get admitted into any college or Uni... I messed up in MYP (grades 9 & 10) honestly I didn't think the first two years of high school would be that important. After grade 10 I moved schools, I started out the first semester pretty well I was trying harder but then all of a sudden my grades fell and I don't think I did too well on my end of year exams. I…

Hello everybody, I am about to start the IB Diploma course in September and have some time to confirm my subject choices. I wish to pursue software engineering and am sure about that. My current subjects are : Math, Physics and Computer Science HL Business Management, English Lang. & Lit. , Spanish ab initio The problem is whether or not I should choose chemistry. I'm not bad at chemistry(at least based on my 10th grade results) but I don't particularly like it either. If I choose it, I'll have to give up Computer Science which is the subject I really want to study. So my question is whether or not I need to take chemistry for software engineering. I …

Hello all, I want to major in aerospace engineering and I would like to know how many college credits are needed. One more thing, I looked up college credit given to IB HL exams (5-7 grade required) and I would like to know on whether I should take physics HL or chemistry HL because both give 8 credits. I did some research and saw that aerospace requires biochemistry so now I'm even more confused about which one to take. My other HL subjects are English and Math. I want to be admitted into any of the UC universities.

Ever since I dropped out of HL math into SL math, I've been kind of regretting my decision. Everyone has told me that Ontario universities won't check if you did HL or SL. I was in HL for a little over a month and was getting a 4-ish average (could have gone up to a 5 if I stayed longer). I thought to myself why would I do HL if I can get an easy 7 in SL? The decision was quick and no one I asked disagreed with my reasoning. But then later on teachers begun saying "Math HL is really meant for people who want to go into a math related career" when I told them I dropped out of HL. WHAT. So now all of a sudden it seems like I actually screwed myself over by dropping out of H…

Some people told me that it's better to do math SL. I suck at math but I don't want to loose an entry just because I took math studies. Please help me out.

My school doesn't have a strong IB program so I know my scores will be pretty low... Even though I'm at the top, I'll have like a score around 28-34 (I don't know my predicted grades, but that's what I think based on how I've done on the exams so far!)I'm a straight A student, and I had a 35 ACT, so I got into a really good college. Now my teachers are going to send my IB scores to my colleges right away when they come out (in July)Should I let my teachers send them? I don't think I will be getting a 6 or 7 in my HLs to place out of a class/get college credit, and I honestly don't want to place out, and I don't care if I get credit. My question is... does it matter if bad…

Noticed many people have blogs like "how to apply to university X" or "how to apply to university in X (country)". Did not notice a "share helpful information here" thread. Thus, I decided to create a post so those whom might have helpful information to share (guide, blog, YouTube video etc.) can do so here. Edit: For instance; have you written a detailed guide on the ibsurvival website you'd like to share here (university guides for applying to a certain country, study guides, tips, etc.)? Maybe you have a blog which has good information on something IB / school-related (i.e a resources and guide website for IB subjects and the syllabus). Or perhaps you have a YouTu…

Hi everyone! I'm currently in IB1 and I've been studying briefly for the SATs but having done more research, I've learned than all the universities I plan on applying to in the US don't require me taking the SATs and accept the IBD. I'm just wondering, since I don't have prior experience with SATs, is it worth even taking since the schools will accept my diploma? Additionally, if I do both, will that make me a stronger candidate and increase my chance of acceptance or not? Thank you for your help!

Hello everyone, I am currently in my final months of IB1. I'm taking four HLs as of now. After receiving my mid-term report card, I realised that I was getting less than flattering grades for one of my HLs (while the others were going well). Ever since, I've been contemplating about dropping that particular HL to an SL, but I'm wondering if such a thing will decrease my chances of getting into a top US college (e.g. does it show me in a bad light). I know that top colleges want you to take a hard course load, and thus, will dropping to 3 HLs somehow show that I'm not a capable student for taking up a challenge? Thank you for your advice in advance!

I chose university program topics for my internal assessments and they are all based off engineering. I haven't gotten too deep into them because I am worried that if I do all this work, the universities wouldn't care about it. I want to apply to Californian universities fyi. Do you think the unis will give me credit for picking complicated topics or am I just wasting my time.

I want to major in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering and I have taken math, chemistry and English as my HL subjects (I wish I chose physics but our teacher is crap, I can't go for extra teachers because it is extremely hard to find someone that teaches IB well where I live). I want to graduate to USC, Texas a&m or Cal tech and I would like to know if I could get into one of them without physics HL. My IB Score is looking like between 33-36 without the 3 points from TOK and EE. I am planning to take the SAT and SAT subject test as well. What do you guys think of my chances?

Hello, I was wondering if the options I choose in my HL subjects affects my admissions in universities especially USA. For example: I have taken Sets as my option for Math HL, but I was wondering if it affect my admission, because sets is comparatively easy to calculus. Would taking calculus give me an advantage over sets when it comes to applying for colleges? Thank you, Abhishek

Hello, I am a first year IB student and we are about to finalize our HL decisions. I am not sure about my courses so I wanted to hear your ideas. I want to study biomedical engineering in college -but I might also apply to other engineering branches. My courses are Turkish A, English A, ITGS, Chemistry, Physics, and Math. Three of my HL subjects are certain: Physics, Math, and Turkish A. The thing is, I wanted to take 4 HLs to strengthen my application. My counselor advised that if I also take Chemistry as HL that would look good. In our school sciences are always taught as HL, the only thing that changes are the exams. Still, I am not really sure if I can…

I am from Brazil, therefore, I do not know much about the US universities as the Americans do, but I am very interested in studying there. Since 2014, I have been researching about a few universities and how do the American system work when someone applies to college, because in Brazil it is all completely different. Here, the academic transcript is not important at all for us to enter in a Brazilian university. We have the "vestibular", which is a test from 2 to 4 phases and each course has a number of candidates per chair. In a determined university, medicine, for example, has space for 30 new students and normally 7000 people apply for medicine, so there are 233,33 peo…

I'm entering the IB program next year and because I'm planning on doing pre-med at university, I have a few questions. The guidance counsellor system at my school is horrible and takes an upwards of 1-2 months for an appointment, and appointments are only 10 minutes long. 1) Is it possible to take Maths, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics? Hello, I'm a high school junior taking IB physics HL, math HL, chemistry HL, Business HL, English SL and Korean SL. I want to study biomedical engineering in university so I chose to do double science. Logically, I would have to choose biology and physics, but my school is pretty small and they didn't offer physics and biology together. The only combinations were physics-chemistry or biology-chemistry. I thought physics would be more useful for me since I wish to study more of a mechanical engineering side of biomedical engineering, but I'm worried that I might have a disadvantage just by the fact that I didn't take biology. Hi Everyone, So I'm a Canadian student and my goal is to get into the Life Science program at Mac. I initially really wanted to do Health Sciences but it seems very competitive. Are there any Canadian IB students here who are doing the Life Science program? Has IB helped you with admission or just generally throughout Uni? I want to become a neurosurgeon and I guess this would be my starting point, not sure if the Health Science program would be more ideal for this occupation as well? Any advice and tips would be appreciated!

The ib policy of the school I want to go is like this: Students in IB programs may receive up to eight semester credits for each higher-level (HL) subject passed with a grade of five or higher. We encourage IB students to earn the full IB diploma. -Those who earn the full IB diploma with 30 or more diploma points may receive eight semester credits for each higher level (HL) subject with grades of five or higher -IB students may receive up to two semester credits for some standard level subjects with grades of five or…

If I'm not wrong, for the majority of US universities, you can't do medicine straight out of high school. Of course, your principal will know better about that, and if there are any universities that allow undergraduate courses. If you're going to apply to some school in the US that doesn't allow you to do medicine straight out of high school, I very much doubt your subjects will impact your ability to get into medicine - you'll just want the highest score possible and to impress universities, so in that case go with what you feel you can do. It really depends on whether or not you have a degree of certainty as to whether you can make it to an American university. Wi…

Hello people! I am starting the IB journey in a month and still need to decide on my subject combination. Intended Major: Economics with an International Development/Global Poverty/Affairs track. My current subject combo: Maths HL, Economics HL, Biology HL; Global Politics SL, English Lang&Lit SL and Spanish AB Initio I am confused over Biology HL Vs Physics HL. I think I would be having a lot of quant work already (bc Econ + Maths HL) and Bio HL would possibly balance that out because it primarily involves memorizations and as far as academic interests are concerned, I love the subject and have done a few independent research projects in Bio-engineering.…

Hey guys I've been looking into the Wharton school of business and exploring my options the past few days, and I've yet to decide what I want to actually pursue. And that's not because I don't know what I want, but it's because I can't decipher what exactly I'm being offered. Problem here, is I'm unsure what exactly it offers undergrads. Why is it called a BSc. in Econ then? It has a clear page for MBA but I can't find anything on the bachelor's degree. What are the concentrations listed …

Hi guys, I recently got back my SAT scores. It's a bit upsetting if I'm being honest. I got 1320/1600 which is equivalent to 1850/2400 in the old SAT. My highest I have ever gotten in my old SAT is 1860. I've taken the SAT 4 times already and that seems to be my highest point. I know it's not very good. I'm usually better in English so I find it very odd that it was my English scores that failed me and my math that saved me in my new SAT considering how bad I am in math. To put it into comparison, my old SAT math was 590/800 whereas my new one is 650/800 (in old SAT standards) I don't want to take the SAT again because i heard that taking it too many times isn't good eith…

I've got a GPA of 3.85 according to this (39/42 in my first year finals). Does that sound right? The thing is I'm not sure how this would take into account EE and TOK.
