---Author's Note--- This is the third draft of a concise guide I'm working on in regards to the new mathematical exploration IA; this started as an HL guide but has now been generalized to include the SL curriculum as well. Please do let me know if there are any improvements you can suggest, or any questions you have after reading through this. I plan to keep this updated and add to it as I work though my own IA. Thanks for taking the time to read through! ------------------------ Table of Contents Preface and Introduction to the Exploration The Process (to be added) Formatting (to be added) Acceptable Topics (SL) Acceptable Topics (HL) Grading and Evaluation Crit…

Hi all! I'm currently using the "Mathematics for International Student" (Haese & Harris Publications) as my main maths textbook and I was wondering if that would be enough for me to achieve good marks for Maths HL. There's another Maths book by IBID press but I'm not sure if its worth for me to get it Or should I just do questions from past papers? What ar ur thoughts?

I'd love it if you could share some tips and tricks for papers 1, 2 and 3. I'm at a stage where maths is kinda worrying me. I'm on my holiday break right now, but when I get back to school, my teacher's getting us to do all the papers to 'give us a chance to get higher predicted grades' for our uni applications. He's also said that if we don't manage to get at least a 4/5 overall, he'll enter us for the standard level maths paper which I really, really, really don't want and can't afford at all. As the dreaded may exams are inching closer (four months to go!), the worry's slowly consuming me. So, I thought about perhaps starting a thread where we could somehow gather…

I have been reading into the IB programme and the subjects that my school has assigned to me for the next two years, and the one that worries me mostly is Maths HL. I am a good maths student but whilst speaking to other people and reading this forum I have gotten the impression that the subject is quite difficult and challenging, but also I have some questions. 1) Discreet mathematics; series and differential equations; sets, relations and groups; statistics and probability. Shall my Maths HL class encompass all of those or only one or a few? Are they all needed to pass the IB Maths HL exam? 2) Considering the difficulty of the subject, should I make an effort during this…

Hi. We got our first IA tasks in math HL last week, which is "Modelling a functional building" and I have a couple of questions about it. Since i have never done it before and our school isn't very experienced in IB yet, i figured i'd ask for help in here.. 1) Is there a maximum word limit for the task and if yes, what is it? I have about 3000 words already and I think I have barely covered half the task. I'm explaining everything quite thoroughly but I think all I write is quite relevant and without it it would be to superficial or hard to understand. 2) How much do you need to show your calculations? Do you need to show steb-by-step how you substitute, deduce and simpli…

Hello everyone, I am doing the second portfolio and I was almost finished (or so I thought) when I noticed a pattern. When I plotted the distance between A and B in a run as a function of the time running, I found that there seemed to be a pattern... I have an equation in the form y=ax^2+bx+c, where I already have the value of c (Original distance between the two?) I am not looking for answers or anything the like, but merely wondering if anyone had done if and if so, if they could give me a hint as to which direction I should pursue... Thanks beforehand

So, I really need an 7 in Hl math as part of my conditional offer. The hard thing about HL math when I compare it to HL physics or chemistry, is that I can never really secure a 7. I mean in physics or chem, if you study enough and memorize the formulas and stuff you are pretty certain to achieve a high grade, not so for math. I was studying for the past month, doing past papers, reviewing the syllabus, and I always end up with a 6 max. Any tips or suggestions on how are you planning to get a 7 in math? Thanks

Hi, so i was wondering whether HL math is significantly harder than a levels math? As some people say that the a levels math are somewhat similar to the SL math in IB. If so why do they get considered the same as HL math? I'm planning to take engineering courses so i may have to take HL Math. However it is not my strongest point and therefore thinking of moving into a levels. Thanks!

Hey, folks! May is just a week away and for us sitting this session, exams are on the 12th and 13th (whoever is TZ2). I think we've all done past papers, especially those of last year and viewed last year's grade boundaries. If not: http://www.dpcdsb.org/NR/rdonlyres/257D5ECC-B156-4400-B0C7-D765BB3D4855/140115/201405_Grade_Boundaries.pdf Since our syllabus was examined for the first time last year we don't have much to base our predictions and speculations on. What i really want to discuss with you guys is what you think will be given this session ( and why) and how the grade boundaries would look like. Here's my take: Before last year, the grade boundaries followed …

I decided to take math HL for next year (grade 11). But everyone keeps scaring me about it. All my future iB friends have all taken English HL. They all keep telling me about how math HL is like suicide. Like how these kids who took regular math had like 98%, they came into math HL and ended up with 60%. I don't want my mark to be 60%! To give some of my background, I am NOT a genius, but I do enjoy math a lot. For those of you that know the Cayley math conest, I got 114 points, putting me in the top 15% of kids my age with math. I enjoy math class currently, becaues I am in regular classes, and it is so easy. I have always been in "regular" math, and never had to work ha…

Recently, I got 45 percent in my first math test for math HL, and I'm just wondering if I keep getting around the 50-60 percentage area, will I get at least a 3 for the subject. I am worrying a lot about failing Math HL and then not getting the IB Diploma. Also, does the grade (1-7) depend on discussion in class, because I never get involved, or is it just IA and EA's.

Please try to inform how the topic suggested can be suitable. Thanks alot!

There are 10 seats in a row in a waiting room. There are six people in the room. (a) In how many different ways can they be seated? (b) In the group of six people, there are three sisters who must sit next to each other. In how many different ways can the group be seated? [6] Part A is easy and is solved with 10P6. For part B, the markscheme says this: Total number of ways = 8 x 3! x 7 x 6 x 5 = 10 080 If someone can either explain the total number of ways when some elements are restricted/repeated that'd be great, or if someone can point me out to a good study guide…

Hi guys, I was wondering if investigating the Fourier Series, and its applications for Noise Cancelling Headphones would be a good and suitable Math HL IA? I'm not sure if it has the appropriate level of complexity, and also if 'investigating' i.e. explaining how this system works in noise cancelling headphones is going to score highly. Should I try and narrow it down, focussing on a particular brand? Also, how can I make it more 'mathematical' as exploring one theorem may not should a great use of maths? Has anyone done any work on the Fourier Theorem or series already and found that there isn't much to explore? If anyone has any comments, tips or advice on this part…

I am working on my HL IA rough draft. I was wondering how long the IA is supposed to be. I'm assuming that there is not a word count but I was wondering about the page length. Also, my IA has a lot of text with math thrown in here and there. Is this acceptable? The question goes as follows: In a certain town three newspapers are published. 20% of the population read A, 16% read B, 14% read C, 8& read A and B, 5% read A and C, 4% read B and C, and 2% read all 3. A given that the person reads at least 1 paper f.) C, given that the person reads either A or B or both. Hi all, I had a thread about a possible exploration idea, but I scrapped that idea, as I was afraid I might venture too deeply into economics, which is something I do not want to happen since this is a math exploration. I have always wanted to utilize calculus in my IA, and just find rates or something, but I am having so much trouble just looking for a real-life situation that I can use to model a function or anything. I am DESPERATE to have an IA topic by the end of next week, and I am willing to just list down all of my ideas and hopefully someone has a suggestion as to how I can expand on an idea? Hello I have been looking for topics for my Maths IA, and I plan on doing it during the Easter holidays to get it over with. I want to study medicine, and thus I wanted to choose a topic that would somehow be part of that, to show personal engagement. I looked at disease spread and found the SIR model. It involves calculus, but I am afraid that it is not indepth enough. What I was looking to do is to try to show how I derived the SIR model, then to use real data and try to create a model and compare with the real life data (although I am not sure where I could find the data for a particular disease). I also wanted to include herd immunity and how changing certain fa…

When Adam and Ben play against each other in tournaments outside the club, their point-winning probabilities remain the same (2/3 and 1/3 respectively), but the rules now require that players win by 2 points and therefore, that games may in theory be infinitely long Show that although Adam's point odds agains Ben are 2:1, his game odds are almost 6:1. Be sure to consider separately the cases of non-deuce and deuce games This question is a toughie anyone out there willing to contribute some of their imput on this question Thanks in advance
