My teacher recently suggested a maths IA topic that I don't think anyone has ever done before. It is about finding the surface area and volume of car roofs, and investigating how the speed of the car is affected by air resistance. I could calculate the surface area using integration, but are there any other concepts that I could possible investigate this? For example, would going into drag coefficient be a good idea? I think it involves some calculus. Thanks for your help!

I start the IBDP in August, and will be taking HL Maths (at least initially...). I absolutely adore maths, and am really excited about it. Unfortunately, my maths teaching up until now has been quite disjointed. Accordingly, although in general I am very good at maths, I could definitely do with consolidating some of my foundational skills. Hi!~ I'm going to start the first year of IB this year. My subjects are: Eng A LangLit HL French B SL Psychology HL Physics HL Chemistry SL Math SL I'm thinking of biomedical engineering and I have the option to study biology later after the IB if I need it (I can't switch to bio now). So, I think it's past the 24-hour period for both paper 1 and 2, and would like to hear other people's opinions on the math papers. I personally think paper 1 was considerably better, and paper two was more difficult. But I have heard very varied opinions on both papers, and kinda wanted to see the general view of their difficulty. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone is aware of recent changes to the Math HL Discreet option . The question came about when I was browsing through the past papers and noticed that questions for recurrence relations (diophantine equations, first order and second order recurrence) only appear from May 2014 onwards. So I'm taking Math HL and I love it. It's really fun and challenging etc and the core isn't much of a problem. My school offers the discrete math option and as we all know finals are coming up. I've realized that there are about 70+ theorems/corollaries/proofs etc for number theory and a lot of terms to memorize for graph theory as well as a couple of algorithms. I understand most of it but I'm having a bit of trouble memorizing everything, not to mention some of the proofs. Does anyone have any advice on what to focus on and what difficult proofs are worth memorizing for paper 3? Thanks in advance.

I am thinking of doing pure maths for my HL IA, and more specifically have to do with proving a theorem. I was inspired by the example IA of Proving Euler's Totient Theorem(http://xmltwo.ibo.org/publications/DP/Group5/d_5_matsl_tsm_1205_1/pdf/example02_e.pdf) and I want to do something similar for another theorem.

Hello, I have written my IA on complex numbers in which I included the "Phantom Graphs" and DeMoivre's theorem. We have had our first draft and my teacher told me what I thought she would, that a) the ideas don't connect and b) its not long enough. I have a couple weeks to complete it and I am panicking as I have no idea what to do with it now. I would like to add some information about the applications of hyperbolic functions of complex numbers and something about Euler's formula, but I don't know how to do it. I know I can't just write out proofs for all this as I might as well have copied that from a book. And so what do I do with the hyperbolic functions?

Hey guys, I was sick and missed some math classes. Here are two questions that I can partially solve them but not for the second part. It would be great if some of you could help me with the steps and process. For this question, I got that when x=0.4, y=1.573, but I don't know how to justify whether the approximation if greater or smaller than the actual value. For this question, I found that the Maclaurin series is ln(2) +1/2x+1/8x^2. I wonder how could we use this to solve part b.

Hello people, I know I will sound crazy/weird, but is it possible to self-study HL mathematics? My school does not teach the HL math, and so I am 'stuck' with SL. I really enjoy maths and I am quite pretty good at it. Also, I want to be a chemical engineer, so HL Chem, Phys, and Math are highly recommended. I am already doing HL Chem and Phys, which is satisfactory for most of the universities, but I really feel like I should also do HL Math. Thank you for your answers

Hi there, I just need a bit of guidance regarding my math IA topic. I was thinking of maybe calculating the rate of change of the depth of water in my bathroom sink if there is a dripping tap and also calculate how long until the sink overflows. I will also have to model my complex-shaped sink and calculate the volume of it, would be good since I will be also using geometry. Is this a good topic for my IA? How can I further expand this? Hello, I am looking to study civil engineering (and eventually environmental engineering) in Germany (no specific university). I currently take high level physics, ITGS and mathematics in IB1. However, I am not the best at the type of math I am studying and as a result I got a mid-4 on my mid term exam. On the first term I got a 6/7. Although these grades seem sufficient, I personally struggle a lot with the material and know my situation is only going to deteriorate as material becomes extensive and more difficult. I have started working on my IA, and I am not sure which tense I should use. I have heard that using past tense will weaken my argument because apparently in that way I am making my argument only valid in the past, not in the present. Is that true? Then should I use present tense throughout the entire IA?

I have chosen a topic related to queues for my math IA. Previously, I wanted to correlate time with the amount of people coming to our school cafeteria and see which distribution it would follow, but I realized that this result would be meaningless. After that, I changed it a little and wanted to use math to optimize the line arrangements in our cafeteria. Basically, I thought I had some really good mathematics in my IA but it turns out that one of my equations was wrong and I can't use that method anymore. However, I still want to show that I have understanding of complex mathematics and I don't want all the work I did to go to waste (I integrated a really gross equation with decimals by partial fractions). Would it be okay for me to present the entire process I did ("I started with x method but I realized it didn't work") so I can still show that work, or would I just seem like an idiot for not realizing the equation was wrong and still putting in so much work to integrate it? Hi friends, Following up from my previous post, I talked to my math teacher as I found an egg shape building, and what I'm planning to do is model the building by volume revolution from a curve, and then maximise the space inside. Hey, so I really need to get started on my mah IA, and I'm really interested in the area of architecture. However, I'm really unsure and have gone to my teacher a few times but i still feel really lost. Basically, I have some unique shaped buildings, my teacher suggests that I try and maximise the space within this particular round building. Does this sound too simple for HL math? Hello, I am doing my Maths exploration on complex numbers and I am about half finished and I want to explore the trigonometric and hyperbolic functions of complex numbers as well as the integration (and possibly logs) however I don't quite know what to do with it. As I can find the cos of a complex number but what then? Roots can be shown on an Argand diagram but the trigonometric functions usually just give rise to triangles with legs longer than the hypotenuse and complex angles. Could anyone advise me on how to proceed?

Hi everyone, I'm struggling with my calculus homework on the rates of change. I have a number of problems I need to do, but I don't understand at all how to solve them. For the example below, could someone please walk me through the exact steps (and why you're doing them)? A spark from a fire burns a hole in a paper napkin. Hey guys! So I had an idea about my math IA and discussed it with my teacher who seemed to like it but I still have some concerns. My idea is essentially modelling newtons cooling curve and then use calculus to turn that curve into a linear equation and use linear regression and squares to find the line of best fit however I feel that the idea is not complex enough and does not go "beyond" the HL syllabus as I have seen with some other IAs

I have been trying to find any idea at all, I want to do it on Calculus. I have tried looking online for ideas but I never really know how to go about doing it on that topic. For example, I saw something on e but I could not think of what to do, the site mentioned that its infinite series contained both sine and cosine, but I couldn't see where I could take that. Hello, I'm in the first year of the IB and am writing my maths IA. As we aren't going to learn about complex numbers until much later I was allowed to write my IA about them even though they are in the course. I would like to include applications or uses of complex numbers, for example, Euler's Formula, fractals, De Moivre's Theorem or possibly some other applications (I have yet to do more research). At the end of this year our teacher introduced IA to us and we had to start exploring the topics that we are interested in. As I am planning on pursuing biomedical engineering, I wanted to apply math into our body. Therefore, I liked the idea of math in biorhythms. The plan is I will convert the sine curves of the biorhythms for 3 strands (intellectual, emotional and physical) into co secant curve and then apply integral calculus to find the area under the graphs. Hi guys, I have come across with some confusion of how to solve a question that asks you find the shortest distance from a point to a plane. For example, find the shortest distance from the point, P (1,2,-3) to the plane 3x +y -3z = -9. I've seen two methods to solve this question and they yield me with different answers. Method 1: dot multiplies the point and the normal vector and then divide by the magnitude of the normal vector. I'm a first-year IB student taking Maths HL and our class is currently using the Oxford textbook (the one with the purple flower on the cover). Personally, I find that the explanations/examples are lacking in this book which is a real problem since I practically have to self-study the subject because the teacher is crap. Also, lots of people say the questions in the Oxford book are a lot easier than the questions on the actual Maths HL exam. I have every Maths HL textbook on PDF so getting them won't be a problem. Would finding the surface area of a hyperbolic paraboloid surface be a good enough topic for Math HL IA? I figured that I could use a pringle chip as my main reference for measurements and I could evaluate on the different ways I can approach the calculation (i.e. instead of using hypothetical measurements to find out the a and b variables of the hyperbolic equations I could graph out the x,y, and z plane individually and find out the variables from there).
