Hello, My teacher has just recently told me and my class about the Math IA. I'm wondering if these following two topics I have come up with would be viable for a possible Math IA, or if I should change course and choose a different topic: Correlation IA on the number of human cannibalism cases (from 1900s to present day) and the presence of environmental stressors (environmental stressors are defined as events or things in the surrounding environment that cause stress; for example, lack of food and clean water, physical and mental ailments, etc.) Logarithmic IA on the number of rats and the spread of plague/number of disease cases. My teacher s…

A 5-foot-tall person is walking towards a 7-foot-tall lamppost at a uniform rate of 2 feet per second. Find how fast the subtended angle of the lamppost from the person is increasing when the person is horizontally 1 foot from the lamppost. Assume the eye level of the person to be also 5 feet for simpler analysis.

I'm looking to write an IB Math HL AA IA (Exploration) related to Probabilistic Language Models (like predicting future words with n-grams) or anything related to linguistics. I'm having trouble picking a topic though that will have the correct mathematical rigor and sophistication and are able to be structured like an IA. Are there any topics within the field that could make a good IA question that I could research? Thank you so much!

I'm having a hard time deciding on a topic for my math IA which I'm supposed to start working on next month. I thought of the golden ratio but I feel like that is a very common topic and would not make my IA stand out. Ive been in the state board upto my sophomore year and this transitioning has been hard as I haven't ever explored practical topics in mathematics. Any ideas for broad topics that I could research on? P.S - I'm interested in subjects like media studies, fashion design, advertising and psychology. Thank you!!

Hi! I am looking for a topic for mi math IA, but I am worried that my topic is not enough for the subject to get a high grade. My question to develop until know is measuring the effectiveness of a bull's genetic in a cattle flock regarding changing weight in animals, using normal distribution and then by the use of expected value calculate the probability of having a certain genetic characteristic.

Hii My IA idea submission is due tomorrow and I have no idea what I really want to do, but came up with the idea of optimization using differential equations. I thought of reducing the surface area of packaging in different shapes like sphere and prisms, and calculate the minimum point (minima) through second order differentiation equation. I am also planning to then apply this to different real life examples like Toblerone triangle prism or something like that. Do you think this is too simple at the level of maths HL because it is just at the level of maths HL in the syllabus? I am ready to discard the idea if the maths involved is too easy for HL. Thanks xx

Hi, this is my first time doing an IA of any sort because I just moved from Texas to Florida for my senior year and I’m at an IB school. Apparently they have been working on the Math HL IA for a year already and I just started. It’s due in 3 days and I just need help trying to get a topic so I can do this. I was thinking about something to do with the probabilities in poker/gambling but idk if that will have enough content. Please help kinda screwed here.

I've gotten to the stage where I need to write my IA in Maths AA HL. When it came to brainstorming I had an idea that I ended up pursuing in my Extended Essay (pathfinding algorithms) so I was left with nothing for the IA. I started researching pseudorandomness and a mathematical approach to it but it seems to me I bit off more than I can chew. There are ideas of recursions, sums and normal numbers but I don't really see how I could apply it to this format. For example, there is a function which was proved as a way to generate normal numbers which can, in turn, be used to randomly generate numbers but would I have to prove it myself in the paper? H…

Hey! I took my IB exams in May 2021 and I got a 7 in Maths AA SL. Next year, in May 2022 (or if it isn't possible, in 2023), I would like to take the exam in Maths HL. Is it possible to study the lacking content in less than a year now? And could I send the same IA? I know it would be marked worse, but probably only a few points for the 'Mathematics' criterium since it would not have HL content, right?

So I have this idea for a Math IA but I've already completed mine so it's kind of useless for me. A statistical exploration on the amount of time required for IAs. For example, the ESS IA "requires" 10 hours of instruction + work time. Math IAs "require" 30 hours of instruction + work time. Obviously ask your seniors and you KNOW it doesn't work like that. I've probably spent 100+ hours on each IA. The way this can be carried out is like you ask alumni from your school and other school, or even ibsurvival, how long it approximately took them to complete a named IA, along with the grade. You don't need anyone's name and stuff, just the subject, time, and grade. Then m…

Hi. I am currently trying to write my math IA and am having some troubles with it😔. My topic is on the effects of Covid 19 on the world population and how long this pandemic will last. I was planning on using the SIR model but now I am not entirely sure as a friend from another class who is also looking at Covid 19 mentioned that SIR model might not be a good model to use as it does not take into consideration some of the changing situations. But my own teacher said that it is fine to use that model. As of now, I have more or less written out the formulas and explained how the formulas are used but I don't know what to do from there. Can someone please advice m…

Hello All, Just want your thoughts on the IA topic - "How far the popular claim that all things from architecture to paintings is based on golden ratio?" - and I want to refute the claim that Monalisa, last supper and roman architecture may not really be based on Golden Ratio. How do you think this topic is? I was thinking of picking up really good papers and see how they arrived at. And then propose my "thoughts" where they went wrong. Is this a good HL topic? Please let me know.

I'm beginning to brainstorm ideas for my upcoming math IA and I'm very interested in exploring the topic of music in the context of mathematics. I've played the guitar for nearly 5 years so I would like to focus more on that instrument. I initially wanted to discuss Fourier transform but my teacher advised me not to due to the topic's depth given that this was only an IA and not an EE. I've been thinking of simpler topics I can tackle in that domain but have so far come up fairly empty-handed. Other topics that I've done some mild exploration in have been Pythagoras ratios in guitar frets or beats and overtones. I was hoping to get a bit of advice from anyone that may hav…

Hey everyone! So our teacher consistently uses some very strict grade boundaries for AA HL - 90% = 7, 80% = 6, and so on. My question is whether such insane percentages are also required by the IB? The struggle is real here 😅

Hi! I'm currently in the process of searching for a topic for my exploration in Math AA HL. I would like to focus on calculus, and I've so far come up with two possible topics: 1) optimizing the volume/surface area of plastic bottles of different shapes (the calculations should be quite ok and I feel like I could link it nicely to some real world applications; from my searches online I have however found that it's a pretty common topic, so I'm not sure if it's better to avoid it), or 2) looking at spinning tops, most likely at their moments of inertia (I haven't done a whole lot of research on this yet, it seems relatively interesting but much harder than the fi…

So, as I further dive into post-graduate papers I simply do not contain the brain capacity (yet?) to comprehend, I'm gaining an increasingly certain belief that doing an HL exploration on chaos theory/it's applications is not my cup of tea. (again, yet(?)) Our option topic is calculus, and what I've come to understand (with questionable accuracy) is that the chaos theory falls rather into the "discrete maths territory", whatever that is. I've already suggested the topic to my teacher and he appeared to have no hesitations on asking for the rationale and the mathematical development, due yesterday. (yay snow break?) (I mean I could've asked him about these if it weren't fo…

My math HL IA was due literally months ago and i dont have anything to submit. At this point I don't expect to pass, I just need something to submit. The final chance to submit literally any document so that I graduate is in 3 hours. I have nothing. No topic outline rubric examples or anything, i don't have any examples or other students because its a 3 person class and our teacher is out. I don't know what to do and if I dont make something up in the next 3 hours I'm not graduating.

Hi, I've had to change my topic for my IA heaps of times now and it is due next week. The current topic I was thinking about doing was how GPS works. I get that it works on trilateration, but I saw somewhere that someone did a HL math IA on it. So I was wondering what kind of concepts do I use if I did my IA on this and how would I make it HL? I'm doing math aa hl btw. Thank you so much!

Hi, I’ve been thinking about my maths IA and I would like to do it on area optimisation. I would like to relate it to city/urban planning. I was wondering if there was anyway to use inscribed and circumscribed polygons in a circle to show area optimisation and then using L’hospitals rule to prove the proof. How would I relate this to city/ urban planning? And would this work as an IA topic ?

Hey guys, since we are in quarantine and I have no clue what else apart from working out I can do for CAS (and also bc I like maths a lot) I started to make vids about hl math aa topics (in all my tests in math aa hl I got a perfect score or a nearly perfect one so I think I understand them well). I would like you to see the video and give me some suggestions if you have time please . Thanks! Hi guys, I was wondering if investigating the Fourier Series, and its applications for Noise Cancelling Headphones would be a good and suitable Math HL IA? I'm not sure if it has the appropriate level of complexity, and also if 'investigating' i.e. explaining how this system works in noise cancelling headphones is going to score highly. Should I try and narrow it down, focussing on a particular brand? Also, how can I make it more 'mathematical' as exploring one theorem may not should a great use of maths? Has anyone done any work on the Fourier Theorem or series already and found that there isn't much to explore? If anyone has any comments, tips or advice on this part…

Hi everybody, I'm starting IBDP this spring and going to take Math HL. I’ve been solving the problems on review sections on the textbooks for Math HL (published by Haese mathematics) recently to prepare for class because I’ve already studied some areas (like quadratic functions and probability and whatnot) at school. I actually thought those problems are not very difficult, so now I’m kinda relieved because I hear many people say Math HL is insane. So here’s my question. Is the final exam much more difficult than them? And Shouldn’t I be relieved yet?

So after reading endless of Ib related threads I came to the conclusion to buy the Haese&Harris Math HL book. But there is this one problem. I can only find a Book from 2008 with the name Haese&Harris. Here a link: https://www.medimops.de/paul-urban-mathematics-for-the-international-students-ib-dipolma-hl-core-taschenbuch-M01876543116.html Is this the one everyone is talking about and is this book good for a 6-7 points reaching student?

Hi, I’m currently choosing my IB courses and I was wondering if T10 US colleges would see HL Math AI as a waste of an HL (our school only lets us take 3 HLs out of 6 IB courses for the diploma program). Would it make more sense to take SL Math AA and another HL. I don’t want to take HL Math AA. I also want to keep my options open for engineering.

I am taking MAA HL syllabus and I'm trying to do a calculus IA on the roller skates and my draft is due in a few days. I am modelling rates of change of roller skate accelerating down a hill, kind of like motion down an inclined plane we learn in Physics. I started off by collecting data of distance and time to generate an equation of motion of the roller skate. That gave me what I assumed is an exponential function because the roller is accelerating down the hill. To further my investigation, I tried differentiation, hoping that it would be complicated. My aim is to suggest a modification to the hill so that I would be able to travel down faster without posing any safe…

Hi, I'm doing an IA on the volume and surface area of a torus, and I've already derived the equations needed. However, these equations and their derivations are widely found across the internet, so do you think it would turn up as plagiarisation? :0 Also, I'm thinking on optimising surface area with a fixed volume, meaning having the largest surface area with the smallest volume. How do you think I can do this, and whether the equations that I have just derived can play a part in this? Thanks a ton

Hey everyone! I’m in A&A HL, and this was one of the problems on my homework. I basically had to find the value of theta (in radians) and hence the area of the figure I drew as well. I checked my answer against the one in my textbook (I’m using the blue Haese Mathematics book), but it doesn’t match. Can someone please look over my steps and point out any mistakes I made? Hi all! I am a 11th grader and a Math HL student. I have chosen to model traffic flow using cellular automaton as the topic of my Math EE. However I am not sure how deep can I go and whether my topic is advanced enough to become an EE topic (my school's Math group teachers allowed me to do this topic, but I would like more opinions), because I still have a lot of things to learn about it. What's more, I have looked through some related essays, but I did not find many proves of mathematical theories. Most of them contain mainly words and graphs of cellular automaton, so I am not sure whether my topic contains enough mathematics theories and proves to write a Math EE. …

Currently, I have a notebook where I take down lesson notes and then after class, I draw a line under and do practice questions from the textbook. Can anyone explain the difference between these two formulas? I am thinking of doing my math SL IA topic on time dilation so I need clear understanding on these. I know that one is the time dilation formula derived by using hyperbola and the other one is the famous time dilation formula, but I'm not sure how they are related to or different from each other. (I'm also not too sure how the first formula is derived since I don't have the knowledge from advanced algebra.)

Basically what it says in the title. Context: my school grades on a 1-7 scale similar to ib but more harsh. School focuses on growth( gives predicted based on growth) but I don’t know if I can grow seeing as it just gets harder and harder. I get the concepts and the homework sets I can do. But come quiz come test, the difficulty of the problems seem to be on a different level (gone to teacher multiple times). Hi I posted yesterday about my math ia, now I have another idea that im not sure of the math part of. I'm very much in panic mode which is why im jumping from topic to topic without really doing good research first. I'm scared I will spend too much time and find it to be too hard or too simple since I have very limited time. I was wondering if I could do a real life situation regarding optimization. It sounded simple at first but after a tiny bit of research I saw that it can get complex. For example, finding the best route for an airplane to achieve minimal time seemed like a good idea. I think it would include Graph Theory Algorithms as I saw but again im not …
