For the last few months I've been volunteering at my daughter's high school to help the 12th graders review for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Maths Standard Level Exam in May 2015. In the process I produced these review notes that I thought could be useful to other students preparing for the exam as well. Review Notes for IB Maths Standard Level I'd be grateful if you email me with any mistakes you find so I can correct them. Best of luck on the upcoming exams.

Hello everyone! I intend to write some informative IB maths related articles. I'd like to help students all around the world to feel better and be better for IB maths! Today, I'd like to start with my opinion of Maths SL's current shift for questions types. Thank you for your time in advance, please share your opinions on comments below. I think this question sums up very well how the approach of Maths SL will go: http://imgur.com/a/LBrZ6 If you see this question, you can realize prior to 2015 papers, you need TRANSLATION of questions. Before 2015, it was more like apply 'Cosine Law' to get a length of an obtuse triangle, or use Normal distribution to work out p…

I've collected some interesting questions from the past paper, hope you will enjoy the question. These are the questions that are very 'trendy' for the recent papers. Emphasis on Vector and Calculus has been put on for SL. Please do attempt and share your opinion. I'm more than happy to answer for your questions. Good luck!

Hey, Im in desperate need of help in statistics, here's my problem: I was given certain probabilities: P(X<40)= 0.12 P(X>90)=0.15 I was asked to calculate mean and SD. Weird enough, I can only do this manually, i.e using equations and the table of values given, but not using the GDC:( This question is on Paper 2, so the time im expected to spend on it is only the time to do on the GDC. I dont know how to do it, please help. I have seen the text book and it said use normalcdf...but apparently thats when you given the mean...how do i do the opposite? Thanks alot. Oh and only answer if you know this very well otherwise ill get confused more if you say "i think.…

Hey! I want to buy the new book (the green one, I already have the old, blue version) hoping that I would understand math somehow better. To me, it seems good in terms of explanation and exam-like-practice problems. But do you guys recommend it or any previous experiences with it? Does it fit with the May Exams 2016?

I recently recieved my grade for the IA's I did in math recently. I got a 33/40 (15/20 and 18/20) from my teacher and mine was the highest in my school so it is being sent in. Is this a good grade? What are the chances that it will be graded down?

I'm trying to come up with topic for my SL Math IA. I am particularly interested in looking into concepts related to the 4th Dimension and non-Euclidian geometry but I'm having trouble coming up with ways to add calculations into my IA. In particular, I wanted to look at the use of non-Euclidian geometry in certain modern art pieces. Any help and guidance is greatly appreciated!

Hey Guys, i'm currently taking maths sl and i have also considered switching to math studies ( i am bit lazy ) but then after many people told me that it does not look good on your college application i decided to stick to math sl. Now my question how do i get a 7 in math sl ? I mean is it hard to get a 7 in it ? Will i be able to get a 7 when doing tons of past papers, or will it be just a good 6 ? Who got a 7 and how did you study for it ? Thanks!

I need some tips how to achieve the highest possible grade in SL Maths... I know everyone has their own ways but maybe there's some techniques I haven't thought off... I'm currently doing past exam papers ocr revision guide - solving more questions looking at the topics I find difficult (from the past exam papers etc) - watching tutorials/doing more exam questions from that topic re-doing the exam papers I doubt note taking will help for maths. PS: I'm not very confident with GDC, and I wonder if there are any good websites that can help you with that?

Ok so for the past hour, I've been browsing the forums trying to figure out what exactly is meant by "discuss[ing] any parameters/constraints." A simple question. I've reached three possible conclusions: 1. Parameters are numerical as in the constants related to a specific graph (e.g. the 'a,' 'b,' and 'c' of a quadratic function y = ax^2 + bx + c) 2. Parameters are the limits placed on the data (e.g. years cannot be negative). or, the likeliest one; 3. Parameters/constraints are the actual physical limitations of the investigation. So if it were on Fish Production (which is what my investigation is on) it would be along the lines of ... (actually I'm still not sure). Any…

Hey guys, My friend wants to know if there is a way to boost his grade from a 2 to at least a 5 in two months time. He doesn't really get what's taught in class and he has tried pretty much everything from Khan academy to tutoring. He's kinda good in most of his other subjects and maths is the only thing pulling his total grade down, so he's really desperate to get his math grade up. Any tips?

I can use stats and probability as well as calculus and gambler's fallacy. My topic is flexible and I'd appreciate any help. Thank you.

My school offers IB SLs as single year courses, and this is my first year of DP. I'm taking SL Maths this year, and took AP Calc AB last year, and my school doesn't offer many maths classes, so my options for next year are SL Studies, Calc BC or AP Stats. Did anyone take any of these courses (other than studies, ofc) prior to entering DP and if so which would be the easiest transition for me to make from SL Maths?

Hi! I've finished my maths exploration, but I want to ask something before I send it to my teacher. Are the appendices included in the page count? My exploration is 10 pages long on its own, but I have 6 pages of raw data which my teacher thought would be a good idea to add to the IA so I did. But he or any other IB teacher in my school wasn't able to tell me for sure whether the appendices would count into the 6-12 page limit. I imagine that they wouldn't count, but I don't want to take the risk of losing marks if they do count. Thanks! EDIT: Another question: Should I cite formulas that I have gotten from the textbook or somehow say that they are from the textb…

On 9/20/2016 at 10:41 AM, IB Math Helper said: The first order physics that you are talking about is fine by IB examiners (I know because I am one of them). Your concern about focusing on the Mathematical Understanding because it has the highest number of points is unfounded. In fact, in my experience of marking, this is one of the easiest to get marks for. You can double check calculations and explain why you choose certain formulae or made certain assumptions and as long as you know what you're doing, this satisfies the examiner. What's harder to score marks on are the Personal Engagement and Reflection criteria. I find that most students struggle with these cri…

Hi everyone, I need a math IA topic pretty soon and I've been struggling to find something that I both like and can find an appropriate application of math to. I want to go into architecture so I was thinking something about that, but the issue is, most of it is just geometry which I think is too simple for SL Math. The other idea I had was too complicated and there was no research question I could come up for it. It was exploring ideas of parametric architecture like Zaha Hadid uses. Here's a link to some basic 3d parametric modeling I looked at, but again, it seem too complex and I dont know where I would go with it. Any suggestions? Thank You! 3d parametrics

I'm a senior, 2 weeks into my last semester of high school and I am just now trying to seriously figure out what I'm going to do about this math IA. My teacher is technically an AP teacher and his students haven't gotten great marks in the past on the ia, so I'm not expecting any more than a 15, especially considering the extent of my procrastination. So here's the topics I'm thinking about: - Something having to do with shooting a basketball at a certain angle and related rates (don't really know exactly how to incorporate related rates but yeah) - Using optimization to find out how to bake the greatest amount of bread using the least amount of dough and allowi…

So our school just started talking about the math SL ia which will be due in February, and our teachers gave us close to zero pointers. I have no idea where to start. I initially wanted to do something related to the Gini coefficient and wealth inequality in certain countries, but I heard somewhere that statistics IAs are often marked harder by examiners. I want to do something related to art, (such as the vitruvian man, da Vinci's use of mathematics) but I don't know how that could connect to math and the SL syllabus. Architecture is also something I'm open to. It would be great if u guys could give me some pointers/advice because I'm really lost and don't know whe…
