For the last few months I've been volunteering at my daughter's high school to help the 12th graders review for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Maths Standard Level Exam in May 2015. In the process I produced these review notes that I thought could be useful to other students preparing for the exam as well. Review Notes for IB Maths Standard Level I'd be grateful if you email me with any mistakes you find so I can correct them. Best of luck on the upcoming exams.

Hi everyone! Luckily, I have a few days more to finish my first Maths portfolio. My god how the time flies - it was a few days ago when we got the assignments and now I'm sitting behind a desk with a cup of coffee... Anyways, back to my question: We've been given data regarding population at a specific period of time. There is a specific point in the assignment that goes something like this: A researcher suggests that the population, P at the time t can be modelled by P(t) = K / (1+Le-Mt) where K, L, and M are parameters It is my job to estimate and interpret K, L and M. I'm not quite the independent thinker in Maths and I'm stuck with this one. If anyone has tips h…

Hi everyone, I am given the portfolio assignment and thankfully it isn't that hard. But, I have trouble explaining it. By looking at the numbers, I've noticed that the numerator increases by 1 than the previous number. What I meant is, in the 3rd row the numerator is 6 and it increases by four and becomes 10 in the next one. Then, 10 increases by five and becomes 15 in the 5th row. However, it seems to me that my explanation is sort of awkward. So I decided to ask you guys how you would explain it. I am attaching the portfolio method. Thanks in advance for your help! =) 1.pdf

I have been assigned stellar numbers portfolio for this year, which is due in two-three weeks. I have been working on it for a while, and I have figure most of it out. The only thing I'm stumped on is the star numbers formula relating to terms of n. I have got the formula which works but I have no idea what to do to get the formula. Any help given would be appreciated.

Hello everyone! I'm currently trying to write my Maths exploration, and I'm having some trouble with the structure. I understand that, as with most pieces of writing, it should have an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. In the introduction the aim and the rationale should be included. It would be very helpful if someone could give me a detailed explanation of how to structure this piece of work. Thank you in advance!

Ok so I received the portfolio gold medal heights it's due to 10 days from today. It is actually all the heights(cm) achieved by the gold medalists of high jump from 1932 to 1980. I have to define all variables and sketch them on a graph. Now here comes the hard part - 1940 and 1944 no olympic games were held. 1)Should I include those 2 on the graph or no? 2) They ask me to define all variables but I have no clue about what variables they are speaking about? 3) The function(using a trend line) of the graph seems a bit hard to choose. Should I be leaded by the value of R squared( correletion coefficient)? I mean the closer the function is to one - pick that function! I a…

Hello! My school is only in it's second year of IB and I'm supposed to write a Maths SL IA over the summer, but my teacher didn't relly explain the process very well. I know that the paper is supposed to show my mastery of a level of math that is appropriate to Maths SL, but I'm not sure what the premise of the paper is? Am I supposed to form an argument? Can I use outside research? Am I supposed to form a hypothesis and test it using maths? Can someone give me a breakdown of the expectations of a Maths SL IA from the ground up? I'm really confused. Thank you in advance!

Hey guys, I have a Math IA due on Sunday December 15, which is about 9 days from now. I want to do my topic on the golden ratio because firstly, I'm genuinely interested in it, and secondly, it's extremely risky to change topics at such a late stage. I know some of you will scold me for procrastinating on it but believe me I've legitimately been working on it. However, I'm having trouble finding an original idea based on the golden ratio. I did an introduction where I introduced it and such but I'm having trouble with how to proceed. I know it's supposed to be an exploration on a real-life thing because I looked at past IAs; even my teacher said that my topic is good but…

Hey all, I got the new SL Type II IA for 2012 and 2013 and I found that I need to graph a Sine Regression function against a set of data to test it. For my past IA's I have found some way to use excel to graph by data and regression fits... however I am having some serious trouble figuring out how to plot a sine regression against my data. I ask this because I have already done all the math on my TI-84 Plus. I am trying to figure out how to plot the same graph the TI does when you go to STAT -> CALC -> SinReg L1,L2,Y1. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this in excel or some other graphing package? Thanks, -Noxen Also, I would prefer and excel solution if any…

I take my IB math SL exam in less than two weeks, are there any tips or recommendations from previous takers? For those that have taken this exam previously, how much of the exam (paper 1 and paper 2) do you have to get correct in order to get a 4 for the course? Taking into consideration that my IA is aiming me for a 6. Not exact figures, but rough estimations on how much I would have to get correct. What are you thoughts on the exam? easy? hard? Any links or advice would be appreciated!

Hello people, So I'm finished with my Math IA but the only thing left is the reflection. I'm not exactly sure about what to write. I looked it up online and it says that I should discuss the implications of my results, state the significance, limitations, extensions etc.I stated the limitations but I'm not exactly sure about what 'implications' refers to here. And what does extensions mean? I'm lost about how to analyse and evaluate my exploration. And my topic is Modelling Population of the world, if it helps answering my question. Please help. Thank You =)

Now my question how do i get a 7 in math sl ? I mean is it hard to get a 7 in it ? Will i be able to get a 7 when doing tons of past papers, or will it be just a good 6 ? Who got a 7 and how did you study for it ? Thanks!

Throughout July, I've send more than 10 different topics to my teacher and they all got rejected.. I'm not asking for a topic, just how to come up with a topic. The last time I emailed my teacher, we were heading towards the direction of voice recognition, language modelling - exploring the math behind the speech/voice recognition algorithm used by Siri, etc. After researching information about the topic for the past week, It involves programming and is too difficult for me to understand. Can you tell me how you found your topic? And how to tell if your topic is good enough?

In this exploration, I want to see how mathematics is used to "predict" price movements by financial traders. This is very interesting to me as I want a career in Finance. Furthermore, I want to explore particular events such as the fall of the Lehman Brothers etc. and view correlations between stock valuation, output and market volatility. I also aim to find out what sort of correlations there are in particular stocks. I will use technical analysis (stats) on a particular stock index to find these price trends. The majority of the maths required in financial markets & trading is probability, statistics & stochastic calculus. The Black-Scholes equation (alth…

Hi there! I'm almost done with my math SL IA and the topic is "The presence of the golden ratio in our everyday lives". What I basically did was show how the golden ratio can be found in various structures (human hand, DNA helix, ID card, aspect ratio etc) and I'm stuck at the conclusion. Our teacher didn't really gave us instructions but he was more like "yeah, that's a good topic and idea, go ahead". Can anyone please suggest what I should put in my conlusion? Like maybe traffic vs. construction or reaction time vs. time of day. but these have already been taken. So i desperately need suggestions for some topics. please help. )':

Hi guys, I was just wondering if anyone could offer me any ideas on what other statistical tests or math can be used in my math ia on statistics. I already did linear regression, pearson correlation coefficient and chi squared test. I was also thinking of doing standard deviation but I'm not sure how that would be helpful in my analysis since I'm comparing the relationship of two variables. Any help is appreciated! Thanks, Tony

Hi everyone, I need a math IA topic pretty soon and I've been struggling to find something that I both like and can find an appropriate application of math to. I want to go into architecture so I was thinking something about that, but the issue is, most of it is just geometry which I think is too simple for SL Math. The other idea I had was too complicated and there was no research question I could come up for it. It was exploring ideas of parametric architecture like Zaha Hadid uses. Here's a link to some basic 3d parametric modeling I looked at, but again, it seem too complex and I dont know where I would go with it. Any suggestions? Thank You! 3d parametrics

Hi! I am trying to choose a topic for my first ib math ia topic and I was considering doing one involving probability because we just learned a lot about it. I was thinking about doing my paper about the probability involved in card counting for blackjack but am having trouble finding what formulas (if any) I would actually be using because the whole thing can't just be probability without replacement. Any suggestions? Or maybe should I just stick with doing a statistics type of IA paper? Thanks!

Hello everyone I am gonna be an IB student next year. I know IB HL maths is extremley challenging since I have some friends of mine who have done it and have struggled for 2 years. Considering the fact that I am in core mathematics in IGCSE, students usually do maths studies instead. But, due to our limited numbers in school, our maths co-ordinator is allowing some of us to join SL maths. I was wondering if any of you out there have done it?? and do you recommend it or studies better? I can accept a few challenges and can definitley work hard in order to achieve my goals, however i am really interested in your guys's opinions. Thank you

Hello everyone, currently I am writing a new math IA and i decided to write it under the topic of Projectile Motion. What what I want to do is take a video of a setter (in volleyball) and him setting the ball up. I'll take that video and create a graph and will derive that function. The thing is, I think that this is a little to vague, and I really don't have a clue on what to really explore within my topic. For the volleyball idea, I wanted to originally see what's the best place to put the ball in the air to get a good hit in for the spiker. If you have any further suggestions on what else I should do with this topic, I am open to any suggestions. Thank you!

So i've decided to switch my Math IA to population growth instead. I know that there is already an equation created for population growth and this confuses me because would that mean my ia would only consist of plugging in numbers into an equation and then simply manipulating it a little (because I want to find the optimal population in a country)? :/ Like, what else am I supposed to do?

Hey guys, I'm having a little bit of trouble with the Math IA since now we can choose our topics we can basically do anything. I first came up with the idea of fractals and had almost a clear idea of how to develop it, I talked to my math teacher and I was going to use sequences for Geometric Fractals or just linear algebra for Algebraic Fractals...however, I was browsing through the Math IA Topics on here and came across many threads related to fractals and many moderators told users not to chose Fractals as their Math IA topics. After looking for many other topics I finally decided to do it on Kaleidoscopes. I'm interested in it since I'm also a Physics SL student and i…

Hi, We're really far behind on our syllabus in math, which means we need to do the exploration pretty much entirely by ourselves, and I'm lost so I thought I'd ask for help here first My topic is cryptography and my plan is to use matrices. I know this isn't in the SL syllabus anymore but my teacher said it was at the right level for the IA. Regardless, is it okay to only use matrices or should I bring in something else? (If so, suggestions would be greatly appreciated - I'm planning on using simple arithmetic to explain the history of cryptography in my introduction, but that would be very brief and simple) Also, I'm a bit lost as to what to do in the exploration itself.…

Hello guys I'm having problems coming up with a topic on Math IA. I wanted to go with health/medicine related topics exclusively and I came across the topics of BodyMassIndex change over time, as well as a spread of Infectious disease model (I'm attaching both as well as a specimen paper - Example 11 - I found was awesome and super concise albeit quite simple and I would like my study to be somehow similar!). The BMI study essentially portrayed the distribution of percentiles for each country (in page 5) as well as the change in BMI from 199something-200something (in page 7). Let's say I scored 30/90 points on P1 Some 25/90 on P2 And my IA was incredibly bad (mainly because my teacher couldn't care less if we fail or not, so he just accepted anything we handed him in and didn't even give us feedback). Points ranging from 1/20 to 5/20. Would my final percentage be calculated like this: 5/20*20 + 30/90*40 + 25/90*40 That'd be 5 + 13,3 + 11,1 = 29,4 ? Thanks!

So, I was going through the list of possible IA topics our teacher as examples and I found the Bayes' Theorem really interesting and simple enough for me to understand!!! I was wondering how I could make it into a good IA topic. Maybe," How can Bayes' Theorem be used in the Medical Field?" Or, "How can Bayes' Theorem be used in today's legal systems?" Are those too narrow? Should I just make it as simple as "How has Bayes' Theorem contributed to today's society?" I know I'll need to give a few examples to show how it works, but I just don't know how narrow I should make the topic! Please help! Thanks!!

So i chose to base my exploration around the number of possible grids of a sudoku puzzle, but i can't seem to find much use of advanced mathematics. It seems most of the mathematics in sudoku is based around permutations and summations, which im afraid might not be advanced enough...also i feel as if im just copying down what other people have already published and explaining the process behind it...i guess what im trying to say is what is an exploration?
