Hello everyone! I intend to write some informative IB maths related articles. I'd like to help students all around the world to feel better and be better for IB maths! Today, I'd like to start with my opinion of Maths SL's current shift for questions types. Thank you for your time in advance, please share your opinions on comments below. I think this question sums up very well how the approach of Maths SL will go: http://imgur.com/a/LBrZ6 If you see this question, you can realize prior to 2015 papers, you need TRANSLATION of questions. Before 2015, it was more like apply 'Cosine Law' to get a length of an obtuse triangle, or use Normal distribution to work out p…

I know that this is very cliche but I seriously need some help finding a suitable topic for my IB Maths SL IA. I started off with a couple ideas including how deep humans could travel in the ocean and the application of mathematics in bikes, specifically in the Tour de France. I'm finding out this task is getting harder by the minute and I would like to find a topic fast. I'm interested in geometry and calculus and am comfortable with applying it to a variety of different problems and am also interested in biking and swimming but at this point, any topic that has to do with trigonometry and/or calculus is greatly appreciated. I have been searching for a topic …

Hey my first draft for my math ia is due tomorrow. Any suggestion what to do? Or a good explanation what you are supposed to do in a math ia. Our teacher did not spend any time explaining at all and I am lost. I was thinking maybe something with architecture, tennis or something somewhat related to calculus or probabilities. Please help!!!!!! thanks:)

Topic: How can you rank up in League of Legends by taking into consideration the factors that affect placement? Here is the proposal so far: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1oiaNvOULQ1B6Da1zgD6MVSNVsCn9SedF0M2199v0Ans/edit?usp=sharing This topic was suggested to me by my teacher when I had to give a list of my interests. She recommended doing it on League of Legends due to the various mathematical factors present within it. She explained that my goal was going to be moving up a full rank by understanding what comes into play to win games. My question to you is, which mathematical concepts that are covered in SL Math can I use in my IA? Also, if you think…

Hey guys, So I have received feedback on my final IA grade, however my teacher says that they need to review it with other teachers... Is there a possibility it could go up? because I believe my teacher is a harsh marker and that it should be at least 1 point higher.. Thank you

Hey Guys! I'm an IB student in Turkey, I'm now starting my Math IA. I play the video game League Of Legends and I was planning to do my IA about the game. I was thinking of making a relationship ship between playing meta champs/champs played in LCS and how they might affect win rate. Give me your suggestions!

Ok so my initial goal with my IA was to determine the optimal angle/curve to dive at (in the water) in order to gain the most distance in the dive and also the most depth. I thought about displaying my data using sine/cosine functions to represent how the dive would theoretically look but my teacher sort of rejected it. She recommended I look along the lines of projectile motion and things like that. I personally am really confused about how I can continue with my IA and would appreciate any help or tips!

Hello, I really don't know will anyone ever going to reply to my question but here we go, For months I've been searching for math IA topic and asked my teacher to guide me too but couldn't get anything out of it, then I spent my hours for every day to find ideas and I actually found some but they were not good enough -projectile motion, I thought I could get a lot of points from personal engagement because I considered I could give examples from my favorite games etc. but it is full physics I guess -prisoner's dilemma, couldn't find enough math in it -lottery, teacher said it might be easy -I choose a brand and looked how the pri…

I am currently a Junior in the IB program and am in need of a worked through version of the Pearson 2012 edition. I feel like the worked through books help me understand the content more and the thought process that it took to get the right answer. My math grade has fallen drastically over this semester as I do not have a way to understand the content other than talking with my teacher. Any replies would be great!

Hi people! I need a little bit of help. Here's the backstory: When we first started working on our IAs, we had to read and grade a few sample ones. All of the ones we worked on in class were written in first person, all the way through (we did one on Florence Nightingale and one about modelling jumping horses) We also got two to do in our free time if we want to, which I did. All four essays seemed to be on the same level, but the two we did in class were graded about 2-3 marks higher, all from the communication and the personal engagement criteria. So, I wrote mine in first person. There was also another reason why I chose an active voice: Most of the essay is …

Currently at my first year of IB school. Taking HL Physics, Geography and English, Sl Chemistry math and Self-Taught. Would it be possible to get in a one of the top universities for Material Engineering. Good grades (4.25/4.5 GPA), out-of-school enrollment and good understanding of all subjects including math exists. Is it possible to get for example in ETH finishing Swiss international school with good GPA, exam scores and out-of-school enrollment?? Thank you all

Hi guys, my math IA is due in 2 days and I'm almost done but I have just realize that one of my formulas are faulty. I'm doing cryptography for my IA and with the formula I used, I got SOME of the answers correct (2 letters out of a 4 letter word :/) but the other 2 don't abide to the rules of the formula. I'm running out of time and I don't know what to do. Do you guys know if the moderators check every single working or do they just trust it? Because my method has been used before so they might not need to recheck my calculations? What do you guys think?

I'm currently a junior in high school, and technically am in honors PreCal, and will take AP Calculus/IB Math SL next year, but we're coming up with topics for our IA already, and I'm lost at where to go. Some topics I have in mind: - Creating equations that model the spread of disease (I want to go into a career biology/medicine related) but I don't know what direction I would take with this kind of assignment... - Sine graphs and modeling pitch/chords - really wanted to do this as I'm a musician as well, but I looked at an online example of this type of topic that did poorly and I am concerned I will not be able to explain and incorporate good deal of math to …

Hi, I'm in the process of writing my math IA and wanted some feedback on my topic. I want to create exponential functions demonstrating the behavior of the S&P 500 in the past 50 years, as well as the GDP of the US. I then want to try to find some kind of correlation between the two functions. I'm in Standard Level Math and am concerned that the level of math in what I propose above is not at the level I need to receive passing marks on my IA. Can someone tell me how I can improve my plan, or if it simply won't work? Thanks!

I'm a senior, 2 weeks into my last semester of high school and I am just now trying to seriously figure out what I'm going to do about this math IA. My teacher is technically an AP teacher and his students haven't gotten great marks in the past on the ia, so I'm not expecting any more than a 15, especially considering the extent of my procrastination. So here's the topics I'm thinking about: - Something having to do with shooting a basketball at a certain angle and related rates (don't really know exactly how to incorporate related rates but yeah) - Using optimization to find out how to bake the greatest amount of bread using the least amount of dough and allowi…

I've pretty much written my entire math exploration for SL math, but my only concern is that the math content itself is not difficult enough for a good score. However, I could not find any resources on what math is acceptable. The math in my IA is focused on infinite series and convergence/divergence, but I'm not sure if that is a high enough level in math or if it is commensurate with the course. Any thoughts? Thanks

hi ibsurvival I hope all is going well, I started IB this September and things are going decently in most of my subjects. However, math is a total nightmare. I'm in math SL, and my teacher uses the Oxford textbook. We have a test after each chapter in the textbook, and I've done poorly on all of them. I've tried so much to improve and I'm out of ideas so any tips to improve would be greatly appreciated. For reference, I got a 4 on my functions test, a 3 on my quadratics test, a 3 on my sequences and series test, and a 5 on my binomial expansion test. I have my probability test on Monday, and I feel comfortable however I'd appreciate any tips. Thank you…

Hi, for my IA I was thinking of doing the hat check problem. Essentially it goes like this; group of men walk into a restaurant checking in n number of hats at the door. The restaurant mixes the the hats up and as the evening is over, each man is randomly given a hat from the pile. What is the probability that no person gets their hat back? Suprisingly, the answer is 1/e. If anyone is familiar with the problem could you please elaborate on whether this is SL level or above. I have found some explanations rather complicated and wondered whether it was ultimately worth it given the amount of energy it would require with mocks coming up. I know I would be able to g…

How does one go about writing a Math Exploration?

Hey guys! Okay so I'm in grade 10 Pre-IB right now and we have to do a mock math exploration in order to prepare us for next year. Idk how much of our mark it's worth but I want to do well on it. I looked at some examples from the past and realized that the IB graders (or whatever you wanna call them) mark really hard. How should I write my math exploration? How long should it be? What should the structure/format be? How many diagrams and graphs should be included? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am in need of serious help. Okay so I am editing my IA for a final copy, it is due very soon. My topic is on aerodynamics and my question is "Does an increase in number of blades affect thrust of a propeller?". Now I have found a way to calculate it, though it was very difficult and I feel like its wrong. I am doubting that the data I used was wrong, because I used the measurements from an old aircraft online. Do I need to use a simulation instead to show my personal engagement??

Hello everyone, I'm writing my math IA on SL at the moment, but I'm struggling with one part. I have a research question that investigates the number of songs my iPhone can hold, although there's not enough math in this. I've chosen a method describing the central tendency etc., calculated the standard deviation and basically found a result. The essay is now in total 5 pages without introduction and conclusion. I've got a rational function which I've graphed (a hyperbola), and I really want to work with the asymptote that has been created. Here's my problem: I can't come up with a relevant RQ that investigates asymptotes... Maybe this is an obvious question, but…

Hi, For my Math IA, I'm planning on exploring the number e and how it relates to change. I know I am able to understand the mathematics behind it but is that enough for the exploration? Do I have to apply the concept and provide date and all that to a real life situation in order to receive high marks? Finally, must the mathematics included in the exploration be entirely my work or must I simply demonstrate understanding through explaining the mathematics? Thank you.

Hi, I'm having trouble determining what equations I should use for the following two problems: 1) The base of a chest is a rectangle, which is twice as long as it is wide. The top, front, and sides are made of oak, and the back and base are made of pine. The chest has a volume of 12.25 dm^3. Oak costs three times as much as pine. Find the dimensions of the box for which the lumber has the lowest cost. (Neglect any effects due to thickness of the sides, top, or base) 2) 10 000 kg of apples turn bad at a rate of 200 kg per month. The September price is 25 cents/kg, and the price increases at 5 cents/kg per month. Storage costs are $350 per month. If the apple…

So my math IA is due in a couple of days and I have wasted the majority of my time staring at my computer screen and ranting about how math is evil. None of which IB would appreciate very much... My topic is Pythagorean triples. The only reason why I chose it was because my teacher told me it was a good topic, and I was topic-less a week before the due date. I tried investigating and have found a formula for how to generate triples which is great and all, but when I moved on to real life use the only thing I could come up with was how the Egyptians built the pyramids, how big a tv is, and the shortest route to get to school. Are there any IB level math problems …
