Regretting taking SL Maths

I am regretting taking SL Maths in the IB. I have always been the top of my class in terms of maths. I am half way through grade 11 and started looking for possible fields I would be interested in studying. I know its late but I have been completely blasé about school until recently. I was looking into possibilities of studying engineering or physics and every university requires HL Maths. Currently I am taking: HL B&M - HL Physics - HL Chemistry SL English Literature - SL Maths - SL German A I currently have a 92% average on the 3 tests so far in maths and am regretting not taking HL Maths. Would you (to anyone familiar with this switch) reco…

Hi guys thanks in advance for any helpful criticism and recommendations. I have been trying decide on a topic for my ia and had decided that I would do it on 'game theory'. However my math teacher decided that it is below my level and would not meet the expectations of the course. So now i am trying to figure out some new topics which might be interested to do. So far i have come across boolean algebra and its applications in building logic gates which are essential in digital circuits. My ia would investigating how boolean algebra is used and applied when building a digital stopwatch. I am afraid however that my topic will be rejected again due it being related…

Hi all, I just completed the first draft of my math ia, only to find out there is a sample online with almost the exact same topic. Scratch that, it's exactly the same topic! The exploration centred around integration, and I used different methods, but they are still worryingly similar. I am absolutely devastated. I spent hours coming up with a specific topic that was personally engaging and now I find out there is another identical in aim and topic. I'm worrying like crazy . I don't know what to do. The topic is super specific, so I'm really worried that I'll be accused of plagiarism... what do you guys recommend? Will this be an issue when it gets marked? I reall…

Hi everyone. The situation is the following: My old math teacher - god bless her soul - has left our school in October and got replaced by this guy who hasn't got a clue what we're doing. He never taught IB, and he does not understand a significant chunk of our curriculum. But, thank god, all we, IB3s, have left is statistics, so we'll probably be able to limp through that with him. However, he really cannot answer any of our questions about the exams we are going to sit in May and what is expected of us on each of the papers... So, I'm just wondering, does anyone know if we are supposed to know how to calculate any of the following things WITHOUT using a GDC: standa…

hey everyone. I came up with an idea for my Math SL exploration but I would like to hear someone´s opinion on how to do it more complex. I have a youtube channel, so I thought that I could find if there is a correlation between video length and watch time by using data from my own videos. I believe that I can get a high mark on personal engagement because the results could really help me improve my channel. BUT, given that I take Math SL, I know that I have to do something MORE, so I have a few ideas, but I don´t know if they are good. So, youtube lets you see how many people watch your videos, and at what days and at what time. It tells you where the vie…

For my SL Math IA, I decided to do something relating to Volleyball which is a sport that I play. My idea is to find the optimal timing when approaching for a spike so that contact is at the best point possible. I did this by filming my friend setting the ball multiple times, plotting and graphing the flight path of the ball, and finding the x value of the ball when it is at a height that is optimal for hitting (average heights, wingspans, jumping height, etc). I would then go back to the video and see approximately how long in seconds it takes, and find the average time for an approach, and find the optimal time for the approach. This topic has a lot of opportunity …

Hello, So I am working on my math IA and decided to model the curve of the GDP per capita of country A (a real country, just not giving the country away). I have done that and was thinking of predicting the future GDP per capita using the model but I think that might be too basic. Any suggestions to build off the model?

Hi All, I have a question about the IB SL Maths exploration. I have done my exploration on statistics and more specifically the correlation between two variables. However, I wonder if correlation is too basic in on order to be able to achieve a decent mark and therefore wonder whether I should redo it. Thanks in advance.

I'm planning to do my Maths IA on the Engima machine and the math involved with it. However, I am unsure whether this is a good topic for an exploration or if this would have enough math for a good mark. Has anyone done this as their topic, if you did you find enough maths surrounding it? Also, what could I potentially relate this to?

Helloo I had an idea for my sl math IA topic but wanted some input on whether or not its doable/appropriate before I hand in my proposal. So I was planning on exploring if there is a correlation between a country's Gini Coeffcient ( http://www.investopedia.com/terms/g/gini-index.asp ) and their overall stock market trends. Let me know what you think, I need any and all advice! Thanks in advance

Hello guys I really need help for my Math SL ia Exploration in choosing a topic. I am interested in probability but at this point anything except calculus works as I suck in it. If you guys could give me some advice that would be nice. Ps: is a topic that is like whats the probability for 6 die to land above 4 100 times? ok or does it need to be better?

So about how long do your teachers give you to work on the IA? My class started them around mid-early October. We turned in our first rough draft, emphasis on rough, last week and our teacher want them in this week as the copy she sends to IB, and she hasn't fully helped us or explained what else had to be done to fix them. Does this sound like the right timeline, or is she really cutting short our time? Any last minute tips?

I am having a hard time figuring out what statistics test to use for my Math SL IA. I am exploring whether or not caffeine has an effect on athletic agility. I have a control group, a placebo, and the real caffeine supplement. There are 5 subjects who will each perform three tests, three times. I figured I would average each trial for each test to have a better sample but I am having a lot of trouble on what statistics to run. Please help. I am in dire need.

I am in Math SL and I am having problems on deciding on a topic and i have problems with the IA in general. I have a few options in mind but am I don't really understand the point of the IA such as what am I supposed to do in the IA and what exactly am I exploring - Infinity and the different proprieties such as cantors diagonal method and how some infinities sets are bigger than other infinite sets - Projectile motion and how it would apply to various sports such as tennis and golf - Fourier series and transformations (although with this one I am worried that its to much for my level) - Chaos theory and the math associated with it Anyone suggesti…

So I'm currently writing my math IA and it involves me proving whether or not a set of sample data I found is normally distributed. For the method, what I did was: Find the mean, median, and mode (if they're all the same the data is normally distributed) Find the percentage of data that lies within a certain standard deviation from the mean (i.e 68.3% should lie between (mean - standard dev.) and (mean + standard dev.)) Use the Pearson's goodness of fit test (aka chi squared test) I'm in math SL so what the rubric says for criteria E (use of mathematics, out of 6) is that the IA shouldn't involve a lot of "prior learning". However finding the mean, m…

I'm in my final year, and I decided to make another Math IA. I know crazy. But I hated my last one and scored kinda poorly on it. So instead this time, I chose to do something where I would record my friend approaching for the spike at different distances and I would try to find out if distance affects the area of the curve for his jump. I don't know if this is a good topic, could you guys make any suggestions? Also what else could I do for this investigation? What else should I look for? Thank you!

Hey guys, For my grade SL Math IA, I was thinking of doing something related to baking, and cooling temperatures. I want to be able to experiment by baking cakes and monitoring their cooling rates in different environments (moist environment, room temperature, dry environment etc...) and I want to be able to relate it to Newton's cooling laws. I think I could model this by using graphs to compare the different cooling rates in different environments. Possibly, I could create some formulas for how each cake cooled in each environment. Overall, I am pretty unsure about whether this is appropriate for a grade SL math IA, but I can't come up with any other ideas that intere…

I have just finished up the first draft of my math SL IA. I think it is pretty good. Not a 7, obviously, but good enough for me, who only needs a 4 in mathematics or an approved science. Either way, there is one thing I am very worried about. It is that I don't really have any sources in my IA: The situation that I am writing about is not anything that I can source or footnote, all my illustrations were drawn by me and all but one of the formulas I use can be found in our textbook and formula booklet... So, is one source enough? My old math teacher had perviously said something about us needing at least five sources, but I can't find anything about that in our textbo…

Hey guys, So Im a Math SL student and my IA is going to be about the Birthday Paradox. I already have the stuff in mind about what I am going to do but I want to add more, so please add any suggestions you guys have. What I have so far: Discussing the Birthday Paradox itself and the math that is behind it. To compare the theoretical way of finding two people with the same birthday to a real example which is done by a survey. See how many people it would take to find 3 people and 4 people with the same birthday. Thank you so much.

Hello Guys, So our advisor has asked us to submit an outline for the Math IA we intend on doing and then after looking at the outline they will approve it. So after some wandering and research I have sort of decided to do an IA relating to rockets. This is sort of theoretical physics but not quite since I will be exploring the trajectory of the Falcon Rockets and using some of their data from the successful attempts. Now I am into technology, physics and maths (I plan on doing math related major later), so this topic does have that personal affiliation IB looks for. Just wanted to ask you guys would it be appropriate for an IA? also in the outline we have to mention …

Hi everyone, My research question for my IA is: What is the correlation between the number of hours of sleep and academic performance in mathematics? I know with this I will be able to get more points in personal engagement but I'm worried it's too simple for mathematical knowledge and I'm afraid my teacher might reject this topic. Are there any ways to increase the complexity of the topic and what kinds of maths/equations would I be able to do with the statistics/data I collect? Thank you in advance for your help!

I am in IB Math SL 12, and I have been given around 3 weeks to come up with an IA topic. Although that I have talked to the teachers once or twice, she had simply told me that I must beware of my topic of interest– probability and cards, as it can become quite challenging easily. I'm wondering if this topic of mine will work out: - Mathematics behind card trick(s) OR Mathematics behind card games (eg. poker...) (for the card tricks, I'm wondering if I can compare the probability of choosing the audience's card in 2 separate but similar card tricks throughout each of their procedural "steps", thus I may be able to include statistics in it) (att…

For my IA I really want to do something related to sports as this is a big interest of mine. I have been thinking about estimating or calculating the trajectory of a football by considering different drag forces, size of ball etc. Another alternative is to relate it to the knuckleball which is a baseball pitch or football kick that involves minimizing the spin of the ball causing unpredicateble motions. I was wondering if anyone of you know how I could link this to the curriculum (I have SL). Thanks in advance :))

I have read conflicting accounts on the level that your math ee should be on. Some said the level of your class or beyond. Some say only do what is in your syllabus. I was thinking of doing something with Fourier transform and music (some other application really) or Taylor Series with an application. But I am not sure whether this would be too advanced. I also heard if your topic is too advanced you risk failing it is this true?

Hi everyone, So our school has recently introduced us to the Math IA. I've read several guides and one point I noticed is that you should preferably do an IA on an area you're very interested in so as to help your Personal Engagement criterion. Thus, I'm considering doing my Math IA on the Tessellation concepts in M.C. Escher's artwork. I'm very fond of visuals and art, and I would rather deal with patterns than hardcore numbers (I do SL Art too.) However, I'm not sure where to begin! I've consulted with my teacher and he says that while it is feasible to investigate on MC Escher's work, it's a risk that I must take since it's out of the syllabus, thus I c…
