Hello! I am new to the ib program and this is my first time making an IA, tbh i am still in confusion with how this all works, but I'm figuring I might do a topic about music.. I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me suggestions on how my topic could relate to statistical modeling math.. Could the beat in each genre of music have anything to do with it?

Hello everyone, Since Mathematics is my weakness subject in IB, I figured I could ask before doing anything wrong. The deadline for submitting my Math IA is next week. My topic is on the correlation of age of death between females and males, in 2 different countries. However, my teacher has said that my IA does not have a lot of 'math'. Could someone please help me, and tell me what graphs/tables/calculations that I need to do. Pleeeeeeeease help me

Okay, so I got to see my scored IA's that my teacher scored (so there's still the chance that the moderators might/lower raise the score). But out of 40 available points total on both of them, I only got 24. A bit miffed at the numbers, but as it was the best I could do (Math is my weakest subject) I wasn't surprised. So my question remains, is this a bad score? Should I worry about it? What's the average score? Thanks, I'm really REALLY worried about the numbers, so I thought this might be the best place to ask! Thanks!

Hi there! I'll be quick about it, I'm modelling the phases of the moon as my Maths IA because my teacher forced me to do this topic. I had done a great IA abut the Coastline Paradox but my teacher forgot that I told him about it and he gave the topic to another student so now I have to redo my entire IA. I just don't get how I can get a 16 page IA from this topic, essentially I just have to take pictures of the moon and model how much of it is visible but apart from that? I mean he insists that I can explore in Geogebra but I just don't even know where to start from. And it makes no sense to me because the answer of my essay is easily a sine function so anything outside o…

Ok, so the deadline for the math IA is approaching really fast (internally) and I'm starting to severely doubt it. I used only integration (area under the curve, fundamental theorem of calc), is that enough? Idkk my teacher will not specify what she wants and I'm panicking achhh

Hi, I have just entered grade 11 in the IB curriculum. This is the 2nd week of school and the school has assigned a math IA which does not count towards the final IB score however it represents 20% of every math's grade on my report card. The math should not be lower than grade 10 level or too complex that I will not be able to understand it. I prefer to choose something from an automotive area. Any ideas? These are the broad areas we can choose from: Navigation – right angle and non-right angle trigonometry Building a snow terrain park – eg amount of snow required, etc. Statistics (bivariate analysis) – eg correlation between a country’s healthca…

Hello, my IA is due very soon and I couldn't figure out another topic because I dedicated all my research towards one thing and could only find time to tweak it a little. So I want to know if the math level is difficult enough or how can I make it difficult enough for the criterion. My topic right now is finding out when a total solar eclipse can occur on Mars because the orbit of one of it's moons is decreasing and that increases it's apparent size in the sky so it can eventually cover the sun. To tackle my topic i had to find the distance of Mars from the Sun at one of the latest recorded eclipse (august 2013) and i decided to graph distance of Mars from the sun in…

So I'm stuck on my Maths IA. I have written quite a bit but I'm lacking the "Personal Engagement" part. I'm really stumped on how to apply it myself apart from the general examples. Prisoner's Dilemma: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner%27s_dilemma Any suggestions? Thanks

could someone clarify what is the page limit for the IA in Maths AA SL? in the guide it says that it should be approximately 12-20 pages, my teacher said it doesn't matter and my classmates say it shouldn't be much longer than 12 pages and mine is 34 :// what is the limit finally pls?

Yeo so basically my rough copy for my math IA topic is due soon and i'm so lost, 3 of my proposals got rejected by my teacher LMAO. Like i wanted to relate tennis and math, but I soon realized that woulden't really work, unless I did probabilities and that wont even work that well. Then I TRIED to look at a correlation between injuries and sports or something like that but NOTHING IS WORKINGGG. if yall got any ideas for high scoring IA's, please comment an idea, i'm really desperate.

Hi all! Its an amazing opportunity to be on this forum amongst so many fellow IB students! For my SL maths IA, I have decided to do a statistical analysis on how HDI affects PISA exam scores with the overarching topic being if students in developed countries will do better academically on average. The course content I plan to connect it to is median, standard deviation, mean, pearsons correlation coefficient, correlation, least squares regression line, boxplots, range and percentiles/quartiles, applying it to the statistics unit that we have done. My plan is to take data from 3 different sets of years and do an analysis on each of them and then compare them with eac…

On 9/20/2016 at 10:41 AM, IB Math Helper said: The first order physics that you are talking about is fine by IB examiners (I know because I am one of them). Your concern about focusing on the Mathematical Understanding because it has the highest number of points is unfounded. In fact, in my experience of marking, this is one of the easiest to get marks for. You can double check calculations and explain why you choose certain formulae or made certain assumptions and as long as you know what you're doing, this satisfies the examiner. What's harder to score marks on are the Personal Engagement and Reflection criteria. I find that most students struggle with these cri…

Hi everyone, I need a math IA topic pretty soon and I've been struggling to find something that I both like and can find an appropriate application of math to. I want to go into architecture so I was thinking something about that, but the issue is, most of it is just geometry which I think is too simple for SL Math. The other idea I had was too complicated and there was no research question I could come up for it. It was exploring ideas of parametric architecture like Zaha Hadid uses. Here's a link to some basic 3d parametric modeling I looked at, but again, it seem too complex and I dont know where I would go with it. Any suggestions? Thank You! 3d parametrics

My last topic was too complex for me so I decided to change it to something simpler but I'm having hard time developing my ideas. I'm planning to do my math IA on something about projectile motion and baseball using calculus. My current idea is "what is the most ideal angle for a batter to hit a home run with the least force possible?". I know that I will take air resistance into account, but I may neglect drag force caused by wind as the calculations may be too complex. Also, I'm not sure if I should include the calculation for momentum of ball-bat collision or not as it may be too physics-like (besides I'm not sure how to solve for it using calculus method). I wil…

So for my Math SL IA I decided I wanted to investigate what factors affected a nominated movie's chance of winning the Academy Awards Best Picture Award. The factors I picked to investigate are total box office earnings, genre, and release date. I am only using data from nominated movies from 2011 to 2014 so as not to overload myself with data. My problem is, although I have all my data, I don't know what to do with it. My teacher suggested trying to find a regression or make a probability equation. However all of my lists of data only have an x value, so I am unsure how to fit it into a regression. (I tried using '1' in the y value for a movie that won and a '0' for on…

So, I wanted to do my IA on optimization, and so I immediately thought of a soda can, but that is too simple. How can I make this more complex? By maybe optimizing a coke bottle so it's not just optimizing a cylinder? Hello there, So I've gone and done my IA on probability - only to find that my "use of mathematics" part is lacking. Atm my teacher is only willing to give me 13/20 (which is quite low since I'm aiming for a 7). My IA is on Prosecutor's Fallacy and solving that through Bayes' Theorem, and I guess it is rather simplistic because Bayes Theorem is HL (I'm SL) and to delve a lot further into the theorem is too complicated for me. I've just heard that probability IAs are infamous for lacking in Criteria E, which carries a lot of marks. At this point I'm quite sure I don't have the time to change my topic since I've got other IAs to do, so are there any ideas on how I can …

Hello! Math has lately been my weakest subject, and sadly, we have an Exploration to write. Our first draft is supposed to be handed in tomorrow. I have already written 6-7 pages on my IA. However, my topic is "Patterns in Pascal's Triangle", and it just occurred to me that it may be a weak topic... What do you think? I am basically out of ideas, and I think it might be too late to change topic. The Pascal's Triangle was something I just chose to write about because I found it quite interesting when we learned about this, but not something I am very excited about. I would appreciate any answers, ideas, tips... whatever! I just want to finish it, and get a decent …

Hey guys, I'm planning on doing my math IA on the golden ratio but the golden ratio on facial structure is done a lot, so my teacher suggested that I do it on a mix of architecture, nature and facial structure. Is this a good idea, or does it make more sense to focus on one of these. Also I read somewhere that the Fibonacci sequence is out of the HL portion too, is it ? and if it is, does it make sense for me to do it anyways ? Also this is my first IA in IB so I'm not really sure how I'm supposed to approach it and my teacher is not being of much help. Do you guys have any ideas or can help in any way ?

I would take several anime characters and try to find the perfect ratio or most ideal ratio for body proportions in anime. Is this a good topic and what are some of the mathematical aspects I can incorporate into it?

Hey, so today my teacher has introduced the IA to the whole class. She also said that It could be about anything as long as math relates to it... Long story short, I really need help in deciding on a question but I can't really think of anything. I was really interested in doing it on a MMORPG like world or warcraft or some game of that sort but also was looking at doing it on the game on all android / iphones called "Tap Titan". So what kind of ques…

I'm rather confused if its required by the IB, on penalty of losing marks, to always leave answers in 3 significant figures. Different sources tell me otherwise: a mark scheme from the old Maths SL syllabus (pre-2014) states that a -1 mark for inaccuracy be applied to the whole paper, once, if there is any instance of inappropriate significant figures in the answer. However, the mark schemes for the current syllabus are very vague regarding this, and I cannot interpret anything whatsoever. My Maths teacher is also rather unsure about the importance of significant figures, whereas DP coordinator says you can leave your answer to 99999 significant figures if you really want…

So I'm trying to come up with a topic for my SL math IA and I'm currently working with the idea of modelling the population decrease of nesting leatherback sea turtles in Las Baulas. Hi guys, My name is Aurimas, I'm a part of a student venture tackling education inequality and we're looking for Maths SL students to participate in our program. We have developed a test system that would provide a detailed and visual assessment of your skillset and help you objectively identify gaps in your knowledge. We are looking for students to complete these tests and send us back the solutions, which we would grade for free and provide you with the personalised skillset analysis. I'm attaching here how the skillset document would look like. Let me know if you would be interested or have any questions.

Hello, I am not sure if peer-reviewing math ia's are exclusive to my school but upon giving my math ia to another student to "pre-mark" they return it very shortly thereafter saying it was too difficult. I asked three more people to look at it and they said the same thing. Asking two more people shows that my conclusion is true--people don't understand the mathematics that I am using in my math ia. This is a problem because if the teacher (who is currently absent) does not understand it either I do not have much time to fix it (since the final copy is due quite shortly after the draft is passed back). I have already given the teacher a pre-pre draft to look at but they di…

MATHS IA HELP - TIDAL WAVES?

I have currently chosen to investigate tidal waves for my maths IA. However, I am unsure as to what other explorations I can do under this. (And whether or not this is too simple...) Is modelling and predicting future tidal waves appropriate? I have secondary sources that'll give me data of tides at different points in times at a beach, so I will be able to graph them. I will also use trig and algebra to find the ideal time to visit the beach with my "ideal" tidal height of 1.5 metres I am uncertain as to what other maths/exploration I can apply to this Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
