I was thinking of doing my Maths IA in statistics, specifically something related to psychology, e.g. What is the relationship between mental illness and crime? Anyone have any other ideas or examples for a statistical IA that incorporates a psychological element?

Hi! I'm currently thinking of a good topic for my Math Exploration, and I decided to take "The Handshake Problem" as my topic. However, I do not know exactly how to outline/start my IA. Like, i was thinking of applying the "N choose R" in it because we actually discussed that in class. But, I don't know how to make my IA even more sophisticated from then on. I was also thinking of applying this in a more practical sense, like "how many handshakes in a certain country," but isn't that too simple because i will simply just use the formula? Or, how should I explore the exponential growth (curved graph) of the increasing values of the handshake problem? But, I don't exac…

I was kind of wanting to just do "Patterns in Pascal's Triangle" and select 3 or 4 patterns that I'd explain and prove in the IA. Would this be okay, or does it have to relate to real life? Because I noticed a lot of the examples found a way to real-world subjects, like nature or rainfall for instance. I was planning on showing personal involvement by talking about my interest in finding patterns and the like, and some independent thinking when it comes to the patterns in Pascal's Triangle. Would this topic be okay?

Hi, My maths IA plan is due in a week and I am having trouble figuring out how I could further my investigation. My idea is to apply calculus and the principle of Optimization to minimize surface area to volume ration of a house. Does any one have any good ideia to how I could go beyond finding the optimum surface area to volume? Maybe an additional area of mathematics would be good. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me. Thank You

So a while ago I started my IA on the subject of MC Escher's Tessellations. However I have realized for too late I have run into a horrible snag. I feel as if the mathematics that I am using in my IA are not nearly as complex as they should be for Math SL. Essentially, I decided to use a variety of transformations to illustrate how Tessellations can be created. I then created my own using a series of transformations. (Specially I created a Tessellations with triangles). While my teacher advised and approved of me to do this, I feel I have made an accident and it will cost me gravely in my Mark scheme. Is there a feasible way I can improve this or should I scrap it and do …

Hi, Now my teacher asked us to find a topic for our math exploration (IA) and he told us that it has to be something that we like. Now I like airplanes (jets, airbusses...etc) and I found more physics than math on the subject when I searched on Google. So my question is if there's any math behind airplanes, what level is it and what type (algebra, calculus..etc). And if there's not any math or Little math what topics can I choose instead? Thanks.

Im a hl maths student and i wanted to do my maths IA on a topic related to calculus as that was the option that my school choosed. And i came across optimisation of packagings. However ive seen that many people simply use the differentiation method to find the optimum surface area of the cans or products they are investigating. Hence to make it more complex i would want to use a unconventional theory or equation such as the brachistrone theory to find the optimum surface area of a can. Is it possible are there any other theories that i can use? and should i find the optimisation of a can or are there other things that i can find the optimisation of? or is this too simple,…

Hi, Over the Christmas break, my maths teacher told us to come up with a "plan of attack" for our maths explorations. Our entire class isn't quite sure what that means so we're all at different stages of it. I was hoping to get some help with a few ideas that I have. 1. The Brachistochrone problem - I'm really interested in this problem but the problem I have with it is that I'm not sure if it is way out of the scope of the maths SL syllabus. All the IA's I've seen on this topic have been from HL so I know it isn't overdone but this has led me to wonder whether this lack of SL IAs on this topic is for a reason. From what I've seen this is primarily a question of…

I am starting my math IA I have decided to choose the Monty Hall Problem as my topic. I was thinking about explaining the Monty Hall Problem using conditional probability and then expand the Problem by trying it on more than three doors like for example four or five doors in order to try and find a trend or a sequence or a general equation. Is this topic up to the level of the Math SL course and do you have any suggestions about things I should add to the IA. Thank you, your help is really appreciated.

Hey there. I am currently in the process of choosing topics and writing a proposal for Math IA. I have chosen a topic on car parking. What I have in mind at the moment is how to park a car perfectly in the parking layout. Well, the use of math that I can see is angles, areas, probability. However, I am afraid that this would be simple as I am taking HL. So, I would really love to hear out your opinion on this topic and maybe some other math relation to this topic. Thank you.

Hey everyone, my IA is on basketball, specifically seeing if there is a correlation between the wingspan of a player and their career 3 point %. Ideas I have right now for the math in relation to this topic however are really thin. I pretty much only have the correlation between them using the r value. I've been stressing out about this a lot as this is definitely not enough math to get a decent to good mark on the Math SL IA. Does anyone have any suggestions for further math I could do with this topic? Thanks!

But i need some help on ideas what i can do research in the ideas for Badminton. I hope that anyone can help me by giving a little idea or anything that can help me with my Math IA. I need help cause i'm not that great in Math. And i did found some relations between math and badminton.

Hey, I started IBDP Year 1 in September and I've chosen Maths SL Analysis & Approaches. I'm now experiencing some difficulties (as majority of my classmates) because we had a very bad Maths teacher last year. I was always quite good at Maths and that's why I decided to choose AA. However, now I'm considering changing from it to Maths SL AI. I want to study medicine in the UK in the future (I'm dreaming of studying at the University of Oxford or University College London). My question is, is it much better to have Maths SL AA than AI. I checked the universities' websites and they don't say that any of the Maths levels is required for medicine. However, all my…

Good evening folks, I have a terrible problem: my Maths IA is due tonight and still haven't figured out the topic for it. My issue is that I find something, mess around with it for a while and drop it as "it is definetely not enough for a whole exploration". I desperately need your advice: what the topic should be in order to be considered "enough" for an IA? Please drop a few ideas, I need them very much! Thank you!

Hi, My HL maths IA is basically on spinning tops. It concerns how the change in its radius with respect to height of the z axis changes. In that, I show how one spinning top has a higher moment of inertia than the other? Is this a good math IA? Does it have the right amount of maths? I am aiming for a grade 6/7 and need help. Also How would I go about keeping the volume constant for the two spinning tops? Would I find the volumes of each spinning top separately and then find a scale factor? How would that work? Sorry for so many questions. But I need help. Also any other proposals around the topic of moment of inertia would be helpful. I do not…

Ive been researching cancer cell growth modeling... I researched it and thought it would be interesting and easy as it deals with calculus, differentiation and more specifically differential equations. i can't find anything specific enough to be useful. i found some papers with vague descriptions, but nothing with data or method. I thought I would be able to find some kind of simulated or real data, take the information and data "collected" from that case, like the size of the cancer cells, the velocity at which they duplicate and spread, how many cells are created in a day, etc... into a differential equation after processing. I though that i could input it into a softwa…

Hi, I am trying to come up with a good topic for my maths IA. So far, I have talked to my teacher about doing something with the Newton's law of cooling. I don't want to apply this to tea/water/etc. as I think that would be too simple, because it is what the law is based around. My teacher suggested doing some sort of experiment myself that I can then apply the theory to and come up with my own formula for that specific experiment, but I am having trouble coming up with an idea for the experiment. The only thing I can think of is changing body temperature in a swimming pool, but I am not sure if that will work for an IA. Any feedback or ideas would be very helpful.

Throughout July, I've send more than 10 different topics to my teacher and they all got rejected.. I'm not asking for a topic, just how to come up with a topic. The last time I emailed my teacher, we were heading towards the direction of voice recognition, language modelling - exploring the math behind the speech/voice recognition algorithm used by Siri, etc. After researching information about the topic for the past week, It involves programming and is too difficult for me to understand. Can you tell me how you found your topic? And how to tell if your topic is good enough?

Hi, I need an urgent help for my math IA. I have the attached graph, for my set of data. I need to find a suitable function for it and I really cannot find correct one. I tried to split the graph to different parts but the teacher said it won't be good. Therefore, if someone knows how to find a function for this graph I would be very thankful. Thank you in advanced :)))

I have been using equations: dS/dt (rate of change in susceptible people dR/dt (rate of change of recovery people) dI/dt (rate of change of infected people) After calculations are made, I get the following values: dS/dt = -937 dR/dt = 6491 dI/dt = -5540 The samples with SIR model that I've seen before all have a positive dI/dt value, I wanted to ask if the value for this can be negative?

What does finding the area under a curve actually mean in different cases? Like I know what you do, but what is its implication in different real-world scenarios. For example, it can be used to find velocity and stuff but is there other useful applications. I've been trying to think of topics for my Math IA but it is hard because I don't know much about the course content as we have only learned probability so far.

I've started my Math SL IA (finally) after not being able to find a topic for months, whatever I found I either didn't understand, was too simple, or my teacher said there was too little math in it. Currently, I'm working on an IA on the Tower of Hanoi, which happens to also be in an IB sample IA. I'm using the same aim and methods in the sample, but I am planning to cite the sample in my references and use my own words and personal engagement. I told my teacher about the similarity to the sample and she approved my topic, but I'm worried I'm plagiarising and will be penalised for it. Is this plagiarism or can I just continue with what I'm doing?

Hi guys, I’m currently working on my Math SL IA and I need help on what maths to use. I am investigating the variables affecting reaction time, such as sleep, gender and involvement in sports. My teacher approved my topic, yet he said simple statistics would not be enough for an SL IA. He said I could calculate probabilities from the distribution graphs, but I’m not sure what he meant. If anyone could explain how I could use probabilities and give me more ideas on what maths I could apply in my investigation, I would really appreciate it.

Hi everyone! This is a survey for my Math Internal Assignment (for the IB diploma). I am analyzing how humans perceive beauty, specifically if people consider a face more attractive if it is closer to the Golden Ratio. It took me a long time to edit all of these photos so I would be really grateful if you participated in it, thank you! Link: r/https://www.surveylegend.com/s/122r

So I decided on doing my math ia on modelling the thaw depth of the active layer of permafrost. I firstly graphed the general thaw depth which turned out to be a linear function, each year the thaw depth increased. Then I talked about how we have to have different variables like temperature, rainfall etc. My two variables have a polynomial graph. I am supposed to create like an ultimate function and find connections between the variables and thaw depth, but i'm really struggling on doing it. Does anybody have any advice?

My math IA is due soon and I was going to focus on weight vs. heigh of jump (grande jete) of ballet dancers. iw as going to take my data from famous dancers and analyse the videos in LoggerPro but I realised that I don't know the scale of the video and each dancer is a different distances from the camera. What should I do? Another idea I had was to look at the height vs. flexibility of a dancer and I could collect the data myself by getting dancers I know to do "sit-and-reach" tests. I would then find the minimum, maximum, median, lower and upper quartile, and IQR. Then I would create a scatter plot and a cumulative frequency curve. Is this complex enough for a Math SL Ia…

Hi, For my Math IA, I'm planning on exploring the number e and calculating e using infinite series. I know I am able to understand the mathematics behind it but is that enough for the exploration? Do I have to apply the concept and provide date and all that to a real life situation in order to receive high marks? Finally, must the mathematics included in the exploration be entirely my work or must I simply demonstrate understanding through explaining the mathematics? Thank you.

Would anyone have any ideas for a photography related IA?
