Hey everyone, So I'm currently doing a practice math IA for maths SL and I need help! I chose the topic to do exponential growth and decay and I'm investigating the growth rate of bacteria however, I'm a little stuck. So basically, I've already got the formula for exponential growth of bacteria but that's pretty simple math and idk what else to do like do I just plug in numbers bc that's kinda boring and way too simple. I was thinking about investigating the effect of glucose-salt levels on E. coli bacteria to extend the topic but I don't really know how to do that and all the websites I've found go way too in-depth about the biology and not enough about the math. So…

Hi all, I was also thinking about doing a Math SL IA on music, specifically piano, and analyzing chords, scales, and other music theory stuff with trig. I was also planning on analyzing a famous musical piece, such as Moonlight Sonata, and finding these mathematical patterns in the piece itself. However, I'm a little concerned that this is an overdone topic and that the math might be a little too simple. Any suggestions as to how I can expand this would be much appreciated.

Hi, so for my IA topic I chose to explore if there's a correlation between race/country and adoption. I've run into a problem though because I'm focusing on 5 different countries and then the number of adoptions from each of those countries over 19 years so I have 5 seperate scatter plots. If I try to find the correlation based off each scatter plot, it would be between the number of adoptions and years for just that one country, instead of all the countries and adoption rate as a whole. How can I fix that? Do I look at it a different way or am I just focusing on it the wrong way? Please help!!

Can you use the TI-83 (plus) calculators to create a frequency histogram with uneven classes? (we call it a frequency density graph) If so, how? (I'm not sure how to input the ranges, for example, the range is 0-30, 30-40, 40-60 etc. I have calculated the frequency density itself I'm just not sure how to create the graph on a calculator.)

I really need some help rn. I'm thinking of doing a math exploration in the topic of Correlation between GDP Per Capita and Gini Coefficient in Countries. Basically, Gini coefficient is a measure of income equality in a country. The higher the coefficient is, the higher the income inequality. However, the mathematics skills & analyses I will use & do will probably only be from the topics of descriptive statistics and linear modelling. And so far, the IA samples I've seen with similar topics in correlation are only from math studies, so I'm getting concerned. is this topic too simple?

Hi, I came up with a topic “What type of function will produce the most accurate model of population growth in country X?” I made scatter plot using data about country’s population in given year. Now I want to use quadratic function to see how would it fit as a model and I’m wondering whether there is other way to find (a, b, c, and d for the equation y = ax3 + bx2 + cx + d) than applying matrix algebra (X = A-1 B) since matrix algebra is not a part of SL curriculum and I’m worried that using it may lower my mark.

Well hi guys, so I'm in the final year of my IB diploma programme and I'l like REALLY struggling with this Maths Exploration. It's a long post but I beg you to read it. I'm quite demoralized by this exploration. Yeah so I initially started to think about ideas back in July, and already then I knew I wanted to do something calculus orientated. Some people suggested that I could do "mixing problems" and set up a differential equation to describe the rate of change in a contaminant, or even a lake because a real world example is what I should really go for. I should use calculus to explore real life problems. So I actually found a document of a person who had set up their …

Hello! I want to make an IA on the carbon dioxide emission in my and one neighbor country. I will make the best corresponding functions for them and then I will connect my results with the population in those states. So I will find the correlation between emission and number of people, conclude and predict the future outcome. Is this ok? Could you suggest something?

Hey so I am dealing with some major confusion right now. My teacher is trying to say that if our math ia topic isn't "advanced" enough then we will get poor marks on the math section. Is that the way it is supposed to be? I wanted to do my exploration over the golden ratio and Marquardt beauty analysis and she said that I would do poorly because the math is too easy. I guess I'm just trying to understand. Help!!

My school offers IB SLs as single year courses, and this is my first year of DP. I'm taking SL Maths this year, and took AP Calc AB last year, and my school doesn't offer many maths classes, so my options for next year are SL Studies, Calc BC or AP Stats. Did anyone take any of these courses (other than studies, ofc) prior to entering DP and if so which would be the easiest transition for me to make from SL Maths?

Hello to all, Okay...so I have chosen a math IA topic after finding out that my previous topic was a bit too complex and it was out of the syllabus. But, now for this new topic, I'm stuck with this one part. I have attached a file that has a picture as to what I'm talking about. Its basically a model for a blood vessel. Now I want to write and equation for the total energy loss which could be modeled by E = E1 + E2 = kl1/r14 + kl2/r24. However when I try solving for l1 and l2 in terms of θ, and then substituting it within the equation, I end up with a quite odd looking function, which I can't graph. I think I'm doing something wrong but I just don't get what it is. …

I have been exploring the chinese postman problem, and I'm really worried that it's too simple/there aren't enough mathematics involved. I explained the problem, gave a couple of examples, but there isn't much calculus/numerical calculations. In general, it only really consists of graph theory. My teacher recommended that I add in permutations, maybe probability, but I have little to no idea how I can accomplish that. I was considering using permutations to explore how many directed graphs can be made of the undirected graph; however, this has been classified as np-hard and is likely a dead-end. I also considered using pascal's grid to find the pathways, but CPP req…

Hi, so I decided that for my math IA, I wanted to look at the impacts of asteroids hitting the Earth using this website: https://www.purdue.edu/impactearth/ The idea I have is to collect different data like how big the crater size is and how it changes depending on the size or speed of the asteroid and more stuff like that. I then want to make graphs and find trends and see if these factors makes equations and stuff. I was also thinking that I could use the Richter scale to look at the intensities of the earthquakes and maybe show how that works. I don't know if this is very in depth and I know that I should use more math when exploring this but I'm not sure what els…

so im really pushing it with my maths ia (the deadline is in less then a week) because i had a different teacher last year that said my idea was fine but i got a new one for ib2 and he just wrecked it completely so i struggled with coming up with a new idea for 2 months basically now i'm doing tidal height predictions by finding a sine curve that fits the data for 1 or 2 days and for a further exploration at the end maybe look at the whole month and relate it to the lunar cycle? the thing is i was basically given the idea by my 2nd maths teacher and i have little personal engagement in this topic so im not quite sure how to approach the introduction i find the …

Hey guys, basically my math IA first draft is due tomorrow and I don't have a research question yet, my IA topic is on the math of figure skating and I am having trouble finding or creating a research question that shows the correlation between math and figure skating, my topic might have some physics but that's not the point, if anyone can help me find a research question for my topic I would be grateful. Thank you in advance. - Sara.

Hey guys! Does IB dislike the possible identification of a student from their IA's? I'm currently writing a Math SL IA on airplane ticket prices, and I collected data for a specific route connecting my country of residence to my birthplace (in another country). I'd like to provide a rationale in the IA for why I decided to choose those specific countries, but I remember that IB had some kind of policy that restricts students from placing anything that might identify them into their assessments. Although IA's are internally marked, I do remember that they're externally moderated, so maybe they'd want to eliminate bias on that front. Bottom line: Is it alrig…

Hello guys! I just joined IB survival because all of these IA's that we have to do are going to blow up my reaming brain cells. I am okay finding topics for all my other classes but I am really struggling with math. I was thinking of doing something with sine waves and music. Maybe translating a 2-4 songs into sine waves and exploring their similarities and differences but I am missing out the exploring part, where I am suppose to be answering a question. I don't know how to make even my starter idea somewhat interesting. I really need you guy's help :(

Hi, So I started my math IA on long jump but I'm pretty lost on what to do. I took a burst of my jump and put the photos together using photoshop. I originally wanted to find the equation of which I jumped, my angle of takeoff, and the speed of my takeoff and then compare it to some 'optimal' values that would make me jump a certain distance, basically talking about how I can improve my jump based on my takeoff angle and speed. Is it possible to set an 'optimal' distance and then change my angle of take off and speed to achieve this distance? I already found the equation of my parabola and my angle of takeoff. However, that only uses quadratics and simple trig, whic…

I was thinking of doing an Ia on the Phillips Curve, in economics I was first going to use linear modelling to prove that a there is a correlation between Unemployment and inflation then use standard deviation to compare 2 countries and show that one is more developed than the other. Is this a good idea or a bit rubbish? if this is bad i'm going to do the horribly overdone Month Hall problem.

Hello, I've just begun writing my standard level mathematics internal assessment. My topic is about waves and tides, where what I will be doing is gathering tides data from different locations in Hong Kong and then try to find the best sine/cosine function that will fit this gathered data. With this I will be able to predict tide hours and height but I am not sure this is a good enough topic to pursue in terms of the mathematics, does anyone have any idea how to make this a more difficult IA or add depth to the subject? help would be very much appreciated...

Hey guys! I wanted consultation on my maths IA. I was inspired by a youtube video: Maybe the person explained it better than I will be able to so please watch the video and tell me if the maths they are using are unto SL standards. My tutor told me that the IA was trying to hard to bring maths on board and I would suffer on criterion E. What do you feel? Do you think I should go for a new idea or implement the current idea? Any help and assistance is appreciated!

I have been really unsure about deciding on a topic for my IA even though all of my friends seem to be really confident about what they want to do and I am worried. At first I was certain that I wanted to do a survey for my IA and I came to the topic how the amount of homework influences test scores, but I started second guessing myself and now I am unsure again. I saw a wikipedia page about parametric design that interested me, but they began to talk a little bit about physics, which is way above me. And I even looked at things like the golden ratio and the 4th dimension but all of these seemed like topics that would not score me very high. I was hoping someone would be …

However, I'm not sure on what mathematical concepts and processes I'm supposed to use to model it. I've read a lot of literature on it, but I still don't quite grasp the concept of how to model it.
