So I'm currently working on my IA project and I'm debating between using statistics and probability (AI and AA), calculus (AA), or a mix of both. If you're wondering, last year I had AI math and this year the class did a majority vote for AA (yes I know it's super weird but with covid, AI and AA classes were mixed together and they're pretty similar according to my teacher so). Anyway, my topic is how a cure for Alzheimer's disease would affect mortality rates in the U.S. and what that would that look like on a graph (or whatever math visual). I'm using HIV/AIDs as a reference since dementia can occur with that if it infects the brain. It also has the closest thing to a t…

Is correlation enough for Maths SL IA? "Correlation between MBTI and genetic inheritance"

I'm doing my IA on the correlation between MBTI and genetic inheritance, which simply saying about inheriting personality traits, but I'm not sure if it's enough for SL though. My teacher said that if I use sth from math studies IB will like it, cuz it's from different level, so i joined their lessons to learn sth we didn't from statistics, but i've just read somewhere on this forum that correlation is not enough for SL. Is it so? If yes, what could I possibly add or change not to score badly? I've just started my experiment, which you can take part in btw (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc5kBERe3yBDE5TUlfjVenmXL3pO_JyQlSJcCLXQZ25HP5-sQ/viewform?c=0&w=1), so…

It's due in three days and I haven't started. Horrible, I know, but I have full confidence that once I figure out the direction I'll be able to do it. My topic is calculating the length of a road, basically using arc length, polynomial regression etc. But I reallyhave no idea how to go about the math portion. Please help.

My topic for the internal assessment is “exploring gini coefficient and seeing correlations to development indicators in Asian countries” The issue with this is that I don’t quite understand the gini coefficient and I’m having doubts on whether I should continue with this topic or changing completely. Is gini coefficient overdone as a topic? I am genuinely interested in this topic if I could actually understand it. I would appreciate it if anyone could link some resources that explain how to use gini coefficient or suggest ideas for easier IA topics.

I'm an SL AA student and our final IA is due in a couple weeks. Right now my IA is 8 pages and my teacher said that it was pretty short, and that we should be aiming for 10-20 pages according to the new rubric. I'm confused because I thought even now the range was 6-12 pages and I can't find anything online that says 10-20; what have other teachers been saying?

I have my first rough draft of my math IA due in one month, and I am having trouble understanding if my topic is too simple, difficult, or vague for a Math IA, I would appreciate some advice. NOTE; I DO NOT TAKE PHYSICS, NOR WILL I BE TAKING IT. I realise many people say I should take on a topic that involves physics if I don't take it or completely understand the concepts I am using from Physics, but I have no choice. My math teacher told me I can't change my topic, so I'm stuck with it! My idea was to maximize the success of a volleyball serve using the concepts of projectile motion. I wanted to find the math behind the sport I've played since I was a child, a…

Hello! I was interested in doing an IA around zero waste fashion designing like Yuima Nakazato's work, and looked into non-euclidean geometry and developable surfaces but all of them seemed to be beyond my course. Is there any topics I can explore related to fashion design that encompasses perhaps tangent lines to curves or standard euclidean geometry? Also I was watching a lecture and it was talking about flexibility? Perhaps I could also use that but I wasn't very sure of the concept. I hope someone can help!

hello there, I'm an ib student from tokyo and I'm currently learning maths sl from the haese mathematics text book "third edition". My school has 8 ib students and we're one of the first to do the ib program in Japan. We all have the text books but the problem we have is that we don't have the solutions book. I asked the teacher if the school could buy them but apparently the states and Canada don't ship them over to Japan. So, the current situation we are in is studying without the solutions! It's very inconvenient without the solutions and frustrating when we don't get the answer right and don't have the solutions! If someone out there has the solutio…

So our school just started talking about the math SL ia which will be due in February, and our teachers gave us close to zero pointers. I have no idea where to start. I initially wanted to do something related to the Gini coefficient and wealth inequality in certain countries, but I heard somewhere that statistics IAs are often marked harder by examiners. I want to do something related to art, (such as the vitruvian man, da Vinci's use of mathematics) but I don't know how that could connect to math and the SL syllabus. Architecture is also something I'm open to. It would be great if u guys could give me some pointers/advice because I'm really lost and don't know whe…

Hello, I have researched into three models I want to use for my IA which are the logistic model and the Gompertz model (differential equations) and my own equation which is piece wise (I solved through algebra and simultaneous equations and etc). My problem is that I have a dataset with the volume of the tumour over a period of time by a university already and I am worried that trying to fit this data with the 2 different models (solving each differential equation first to get the algebraic form) and calculating the total variance (residual values) for each model(the y value of the model - the actual y value for a specific set of x values^2) to determine whic…

I'm M22 so I have around 6 months left. I was basically forced to choose AI SL, but I know it doesn't have much future. I don't know if they'll allow me to change, but if I can should I? Pros: It will basically make my IB diploma useful. I'm very good at Maths. I'm scoring almost 10/10 in all the practice tests I do (although I understand AA SL may be much harder than that). I hear there's not as much difference between AI SL and AA SL as between AI SL and AI HL. The criteria for the IA are the same so I won't have to change that. Cons: I have little time left. I'll have to do it on my own. I will keep going to AI SL clas…

Hi guys I am currently in grade 10 pre-ib and I was thinking about what subjects I want to take for next year when I am officially in the Ib program. I am pretty horrible at math so I was thinking about what I can do over the summer to be prepared when I enter sl math in grade 11. Is there a book I can order? A math course I can take? Same thing for French but I am fine at French I just want to make sure that I am prepared when I go in next year.

Hello everyone, I am investigating to what extent perceived facial attraction is quantifiable using the golden ratio-more specifically how attractive a face is considered depending on how closely it conforms to 'Marquardt's Phi mask'. The survey is very fast, easy to answer and above all entertaining (I have spent many hours laughing whilst editing these photos!). Here is the link: https://www.surveylegend.com/s/3q7k Thank you!

Thank you!!

hey guys, I basically chose golden ratio in art (i know very basic) but I'm seriously not the best in Math and I just chose this because why not, i didn't expect this to be so overused. My IA is due very soon and I'm basically making my own art using the golden ratio for personal engagement as well. this is basically my investigation: I will pick samples of paintings, 3 paintings which do not fulfill the golden ratio and 3 paintings which use golden ratios, as well as two paintings I have made with the use of golden ratio. The data collected will be taken through a survey. I will distribute a survey (a) Female (15-20) (b) Male (15-20) about the rank of qua…

I know this is going to sound dumb, but what is the general format for writing the IA? My teacher is not very helpful and looking through the internet so far has not shown me something close to what I need. Should I split my investigation into different categories/sections and if so should I label them as such? What things should I include? How do I organize all of what I want/need to say? How long should each of the parts be? Please, I am so lost and don't know what to do and have been procrastinating on this so much because I don't know what to do. I already have my idea and data, I just need to know how to translate that into an essay.

So im starting my math IA but Im not quite sure if the subject is apropriate. I really liked the subject od 3D geometry and so I thought that calculating surface area and volume of something would be neat. So I came up with the idea of doing a videogame character since thaths something that intrests me, so far I have the options of toon Link (I would smplidy his design using blender) or the original Cloud from FF7 but Im not sure if the subject is complex enough or if the idea is not sutable for the paper. Any tips would be greatly apriciated

Hello! Recently, I have come up with calculating the volume and surface area of wine glasses for my Math IA (I am in Maths SL). I am just wondering whether if this idea is suitable for Maths SL and whether if it shows personal engagement. Since this idea would involved relatively more heavy calculus as I am at SL level, would it show personal engagement because I am attempting to learn something more challenging and outside the scope of the syllabus? In my opinion, it is not exactly unique or crazy creative compared to the sample IA's I see, for example graphing cosmetic contact lens patterns. Do you have any tips on how I could expand on the topic? I had in mind trying t…

Hi, I'm on the last week of my IA and just changed topics from something very difficult to something I'm fearing is too easy. Bayes' theorem. I'll be applying it to healthcare by focusing on test errors and probability. But I'm scared I won't be able to go into depth enough. Should I maybe just have a topic of "applying to the real world", because it can also be applied to spam filters and other things. Or does maybe someone know a way to expand the healthcare topic? basically, my teacher is asking us to come up with 3 possible SL math IA topics. so far, i have 1: determining the number of wishes a player would have to spend on average, to achieve a 5-star character or weapon, taking into account the mechanics of the game (e.g. increasing rates based on failure) the game i'm using is Genshin Impact, i'm not sure if this is doable though i was also thinking of doing something related to prime numbers, or sudoku, but i'm not entirely sure. i heard that game theory is difficult to do, and not many people score well, so i'm debating whether or not to use the probability one. if anyone can list some suggesti…

Hi, I am looking for a topic to do my internal assessment in Mathematics Analysis and Approaches. I thought about doing something related to finances. Also, I am not quite sure what approach would be interesting to study this topic. I can talk about growth and financial interest, but I don't know if this is enough. Can anyone please help me?

Hello, I want to do my maths IA on astronomy, but I don't really know where to start. My initial idea was to predict the distance between earth and three other stars as well as how much time would I loose on earth if I visited each star and came back, although my teacher said that's too advanced and something I'd do in university not now. So he suggested that I'd do something related to old nautical instruments of navigation (eg: astrolabe); he thought I could understand how these work and how unreliable they were, but I'm not very interested in that. I really want to do something related to space, stars, galaxies, even "time travel" perhaps. Do you have any id…

My aim for my math exploration is to find a US capital city whose climate matches Kyoto, Japan. I am only looking at the temperature aspect of the climate. I manage to narrowed down my data and now I am trying to find the equation to fit my data. I know that I am using sinusoidal modeling to find it, but I want to use the sine regression to get those models. However, I don't know if IB will give me less marks because of that. I have to find 6 models since I am doing the maximum and the minimum avarage temperaturesfor each city. I find this would make my paper extra long, and the equations would not be as accurate to compare and get an accuarate conclusion for…

My Applications and Interpretations IA is going to be an utter disaster. My biggest concern is whether I'll be able to take the exam if I don't turn in anything at all, because right now I feel like all hope is lost. I'm far too late to salvage it. How badly will it affect me both grades wise and exam wise, and if I absolutely must, what tips do you have for getting something put together quickly?
