For the Math Studies IA the student is to pick 2 variables they believe are related to each other in some way and test this using statistical analysis calculations. You can literally pick any two variables. I for example chose how many hours people play video games on average per week and the amount of words they could remember in a 1 minute interval. You want this to flow like a story, no one wants to grade something where you just throw numbers at them. Explain what they mean. Explain why you did this (I don't care if it's simply saying you simplified a fraction, do it). I'm not saying the graders suck at math, I'm saying that you don't know who's getting it so assum…

"the" maths question

f(x)=(-2)^x yep, that's the thing that have been bugging me for some weeks now. maybe you guys have an answer to this. Here goes: consider f(x) is an harmless function (it's not exactly a function really, keep readin) with a domain of positive natural numbers. If you graphed it it would be something like: the distance between the dots keep increasing as you see. (-2)^1=-2 (-2)^2=+4 (-2)^3=-8 now, what would happen if the function was not defined in positive natural numbers but all the real numbers? The range would be complex. (-2)^(1/2) for example. Let's say the imaginary axis is the z-axis. As the domain is still real numbers its in one dimention the graph w…

OK, I'm doing my IB Math Studies Internal Assessment now. What I'm doing is evaluating my survey results. I conducted a survey of 50 boys and 50 girls (100 total) of which subjects they preferred the most. I gave them a list of 7 subjects each with the choices "I Like/Do not Like this subject" I have the raw data, but I have a vague idea of what I want to do with it. I wanted to use the standard deviation, chi-square into this data but im not sure how... Any ideas on what I can do with these results? Any more processes? Also, whats the word count for the Math IA?

K, I am working on my Internal Assessment which is due in 4 days (I know... it's not my fault though..) and I am doing the relation between Immigration and the economy. Currently I am working on the economy aspect and I need to know the factors that affect the economy in general, with of course some stats that I can use in the IA. If anyone knows a general place where I could gather my own information that would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I've got a quick question: my math project is a test to see if there is a correlation between lung cancer and smoking. I have the number of smokers in Ontario from 1999 - 2004, ditto lung cancer victims. That only leaves me with 12 pieces of data, (i.e. numbers). Is that enough? Do I need MORE raw data? If not, how can I compensate for it in the analysis?

Why is math studies so much easyer compared to other classes IB offers? In my class there are about 40 kids and another class of 40 and 200 in my graduating grade.... in other countries do people tend to not lean towards this class orrrr is something else going on here?

Hi! I just checked an old Math Studies test and there they tell me, at the first question, to find the Standard Deviation... However, the question is only worth one point which for some reason got me to think if the effort I would have put into it really would have been worth it, and I thought, perhaps there is a quicker way to gain Standard Deviation than I know of? Because the way I do it is tedious. That's why I ask you, is there a quick way of finding a Standard Deviation?

Hi! I know this has probably been asked before, but when the mark-scheme says: "Award (A0)" and " award (A0)(A0)", what does it mean? Answer this considering that: A: Answer Number afterwards means the amount of points achieved. Considering that, does that mean I get 0 points? If that's the case, then why would they even "award" something at all? Thanks in advance, Me

Okay, I just have to ask. Do prestigious US universities loathe math studies? I mean, do I have any realistic chance of getting in if I have really good grades, extra curricular activities etc. but I also have math studies? :/ I've thought about studying international relations and "humanistic" stuff. My ultimate dream universities would probably be NYU or Columbia... Also what do you guys think the UK universities think about math studies. What do you guys think?

Ok, so here's the deal. I am a part of a new program at my school, which comprisises of about 15 boys doing the IB Mathematical Studies Course in one year instead of the standard two. Effectively this gets all maths out of the way, and leaves us time to do other subjects in year 12. My problem is that they have basically just thrown our IA deadlines at us, without really taking us through possible topics and having conversations with us about how/what to choose. I am looking along the lines of a footballing topic such as; "Investigating the relationship between the height/weight of a player and the amount of goals per season in European Football" or something like that. …

Hey! I was always told to round up all the answers to 3 significant figures. However when I was doing past papers, I saw that for instance exercises with future value demand 2 decimal places otherwise they do not award points. How come? Are there any more detaile rules? I appreciate all the answers as the exams are tommorow!

This thread is dedicated to IB students like me who love to use calculators. I came across this question without using a calculator and got stuck. btw im in pre-ib maths. 13. (a) Consider the equation 2 3sin x−11sinx+6 = 0. (i) Find the two values of sin x which satisfy this equation. (ii) Solve the equation, for 0 ≤x≤180 . So basically I did it up to.... sin x= 2/3 or sin x= 3 which answers part i. then i did part ii. and i know that immediately sin x=3 is invalid/error. so im left with sin x= 2/3 either im missing something or havent been taught it but its impossible to do that even with knowing the special angles. Hi guys, i was wondering if there are any websites, youtube users or other online resources that i can revise for math studies with? We have the textbook computer version at school which would be great, but unfortunately it doesn't work on Mac and therefore i can't use it at home on my laptop. Does anyone know where I can get a Mac copy, or any youtube users or websites that may help? I don't need something too in-depth in teaching, but more of an overview of the breadth of the course if possible. But anything anyone knows would be helpful, thanks a lot guys I have been looking online, but finding resources for IB in general is difficult. Tony Petrovik

Hello there, thank you so much for clicking this! In my investigation I'm comparing rating for movies on imdb and their budget. I found the top 50 most popular movies on imdb, and the bottom most rated, so I have 50 data points with ratings such as 9.3, 9.2, etc. and 50 data points with ratings like 1.2, 1.3 etc. I have performed my chi squared test, and found they are dependent. However, I can't create a scatter plot for them, as I only have really high ratings and really low ratings (and I can't get any middle ones!) It looks too odd, with all the data grouped on different sides of the graph. As a result, I can't calculate correlation coefficient, or pearsons, or line r…

hi everybody! I'm taking Calc 1 over summer at the university in town, and Calc 2 next year. I was just wondering if anybody knew if when you take HL (Calc 2) in 10th grade, do you have to redo anything...cuz my friend said I would probably need to redo it, and I really don't want to becuz I already have to retake the IB exam for IB physics in 11th, and it would be crazy if I have to redo all the HL and IB stuff I do in 9th and 10th cuz I am doing a bunch of IB and HL stuff in freshman yr(this yr) and next yr. THanks in advance!

Hey everyone! As a current Math Studies SL student, and a TI-Nspire owner I would truly like to maximize the calculator and learn (to the best of my ability) how to use it to its fullest. I looked up videos online, but they truly didn't flesh out as much as I desired them to. If you have any recommendations or tips, please post them below to help an aspiring IB student haha! Thanks!

Hi They ask me to calculate the mean and standard deviation using the gdc of t: Time | nr of people 0 <(equal) t < 15 | 21 15 <(equal) t < 30 | 32 ... and so on <(equal) just means greater or equal to I tried to calculate the mean by taking the midpoint, but the result is incorrect. So I guess it is maybe because it is "greater or equal to" and not just simple "0-15"... Can anyone help me out please? Thanks. (Edit: coz I misunderstood the question)

I have no idea how to solve this problem. I have the final answer, but don't know how to get there. I think I need to use implicit differentiation, but I'm not sure, and I'm quite confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Find the equation of the tangent line to the curve is x^2+y^2 = 169 at the point (5, -12). A. 5y-12x=-120 B. 5x-12y=119 C. 5x-12y=169 D. 12x+5y=0 E. 12x+5y=169 I have been told that the final answer is (B)5x-12y=119, but none of my friends seem to be able to explain it.

Hi, I'm currently at the end of my first year in IB and possibly be predicted for a grade of 27 only! All because of Math and Physics(not really important at this thread). I originally chose Maths HL but soon downgraded to Maths SL and now I'm thinking of Math Studies. I'm just not good with numbers as in any other subjects I excel in it e.g English or Geo or Business. I chose Maths SL to ensure my choices aren't limited to only a few choices(University courses). I'm only really interested in the following courses: - Business Management - Finance and Accounting - Geography/International relation - Politics/law Thank you,
