For the Math Studies IA the student is to pick 2 variables they believe are related to each other in some way and test this using statistical analysis calculations. You can literally pick any two variables. I for example chose how many hours people play video games on average per week and the amount of words they could remember in a 1 minute interval. You want this to flow like a story, no one wants to grade something where you just throw numbers at them. Explain what they mean. Explain why you did this (I don't care if it's simply saying you simplified a fraction, do it). I'm not saying the graders suck at math, I'm saying that you don't know who's getting it so assum…

This is my school's second year of IB; first year of practically doing IB diploma. What's the minimum word count for the Math Studies SL IA? and data and charts and graphs don't count, correct? do table and graph titles count? We know the max is 2,000. stupid question, i know, but we aren't getting straight answers from the teacher. Thanks.

So my goal for my overall Math Studies grade is a 6, and we are currently working on the IA. When I was looking at the rubric however, it does not convert from the points on the rubric to what the IB grade would be (1-7) and I was wondering if anyone knew the boundaries for each score?

I've been thinking about looking at the relationship between latitude and a country's GDP but I don't know if there's enough math that I could incorporate into it. I know I can talk about the correlation between the two using a graph. Anyone have any suggestions on the math I could use? Thanks!

Hiya For those of you who are struggling to think of a maths IA topic, here are a few examples: (all content taken from Ibmathsresources.com - even more ideas and info re the exploration on there.....) Example Maths Studies IA Investigations: Correlations: 1) Is there a correlation between hours of sleep and exam grades? Studies have shown that a good night’s sleep raises academic attainment. 2) Is there a correlation between height and weight? The NHS use a chart to decide what someone should weigh depending on their height. Does this mean that height is a good indicator of weight? 3) Is there a correlation between arm span and foot height? This is also a potential oppo…

Hello, So I really need help. I keep changing my IA topic. First it was how to curve a soccer ball, but I mostly find physics of that on the computer, (couldn't find anything related to a math studies topic). Then I changed it to sport and nationality but when I typed up a survey for that, I realized many people are mixed and many people play more than one sport. So now I thinking on music. Does anyone have any ideas on what in music I could do my Math Studies IA on. My mom gave me the idea of heart beats and music but does anyone have an other ideas on music and math? Or just any other IA topics in general??? and I really like music and sports. So something around that, …

I am doing my Maths portfolio on investigating divisibility atm. I am really stuck on question 3 and 4. These are the portfolio questions 1. Factorize the expression P(n)=n^x-n for x = 2,3,4,5. Determine if the expression is always divisible by the corresponding x. If divisible use mathematical induction to prove your result by showing whether P(k+1)-P(k) is always divisible by x. Using appropriate technology, explore more cases and make a conjecture for when n^x - n is divisible by x. 2. Explain how to obtain the entries in Pascal's triangle...State the relationship between the expression P(k+1)-P(k) and Pascal's traingle. Reconsider your conjecture. Write an express…

I'm not aiming at 7. Hope you guys can help even though it's hard to tell (with the boundaries and all). I just need an indication that I'm doing alright!

Just wondering - how different are paper 1 and 2? (Besides the obvious '1 is 15 short questions and 2 is 5 long questions) Hopefully Paper 2 isn't too much more difficult than Paper 1. I'm one point short of my best university requirement and I hoped to pick that up in maths studies (6 to 7) as my uni offer has no chance of making it part of my conditional if I slip up (studies for law? lol) whereas on top of this, my highers are all subjective (therefore reluctant to predict up despite a 7 in my mock) and/or unlikely to improve anyway (a 7 in english seems entirely unlikely for me) My maths teacher told me that if I got a 7 in this mock I would be predicted up, but we go…

Okay, first of all i've read alot of forums concerning about math studies "worth" and there are so many like clashing opinions that i don't know which to believe. so, people have been saying that taking maths studies would hinder your chances at uni, but some say that it doesn't matter if you took maths SL or HL or what but what really matters is your over all garde in the ib. i saw this one person saying that there was this girl that took art and maths studies and business and got a 42 in her ib grade but is still accepted in a college with a scholarship. so really, coz i don't know where to go. some say, take SL atleast (im in studies now) i got a B in my gcses higher.…

Hey everyone! For my Math Studies Internal Assessment, I am considering collecting data on the number and type of cars owned by a family vs. the families approximate income. I would be able to conduct a survey among my school's students as well as conducting the survey on IB Survival. Okay I'm trying to do the following question: The function f is defined by f : x--> 30 sin 3x cos 3x, 0 < x < pi/3. (a) Write down an expression for f (x) in the form a sin 6x, where a is an integer. (b) Solve f (x) = 0, giving your answers in terms of p. Now I spotted you have to use an identity, and it does make sense to use the double angle formula (which the mark scheme also suggests)... however I'm confused as to how to manipulate the double angle formula in order to get the answer for part (a). As the double angle formula is going to be either sin2x = 2sinxcosx or cos2x = 1- 2sin2x I'm having difficulty working out where this stands in relation to the fac…

Hi i'm new to this whole IB thing. My school started IB just last year so my class is the second to be going through it. I've applied to study business management in the UK and the only thing standing between me and a great university right now is my SL math grade. Hi guys, my topic is 'Investigating the relationship between Government spending on Welfare and the number of crimes in the US for a period of 16 years" When calculating the chi square relation between Gvt. Spending and Number of crimes, do I account for the spending in billion by writing 154.6 billion or do I actually write 154.6 * 10^9? So today I think I came across a solution by performing it in the way my text book solves sums. they basically make like Punnet Square sort of table for the two variable happening and not hapening. So it would look like this for my project: What do you think of the table and do you think it can be used for a Chi square test to dete…

However, the question is only worth one point which for some reason got me to think if the effort I would have put into it really would have been worth it, and I thought, perhaps there is a quicker way to gain Standard Deviation than I know of? Because the way I do it is tedious. That's why I ask you, is there a quick way of finding a Standard Deviation?

So I am working on my math portfolio. It asks us to use matrix methods to find quadratic and cubic functions with the given data. From what my teacher showed us in class we need to have an inverse matrix of the variables of the equation multiplied against the y-value. for example, the x value is 2, and the y value is 23, so she told us to plug in 2 into a ax^2+bx+c formula, and to make c=1. so my matrix for that variable would be [4 2 1] = [23]. however i have 9 values, a 9x3 matrix, and inverses can only be done on square matrices, can i just break it up into 3 smaller 3x3 matrices? and am i finding what the constant is with this ?
