Hi All, Just did my IOC today and I'm feeling very confused and unsure at how I went. I definitely did not do as well as I hoped. I looked up the marking scheme and estimate my self around 19-20/30. I was wondering what it would take from here to achieve a 6 or 7 in SL English and if its still possible. Many Thanks

Hello everyone! For the IOP part of my syllabus, our class has selected the books Like Water for Chocolate and Pride & Prejudice. I basically came up with the topic of how effectively satire is used in P&P, but food plays an extremely important role in the book LWFC, and I need to find a way to link the both of them together so I can compare and contrast the writing style of the authors. Any suggestions?

Did any of you guys have Carol Ann Duffy poems during class? I am having some troubles annotating Devil's wife, Salome and Havisham... But also if you maybe had an extract of The tempest by Shakespeare, it would be very helpful if you could say what to talk about in those poems/extract thanks in advance

Hi every one, I need help for my written task 1. This is my 2nd tasks, but I still, don't have a clear idea about what IB want me to do. I had read Doll's house and Street car named desire. I tried to search for examples of written task on part 3, but I couldn't find any. All I have heard from my classmate and teacher is that the example is a diary entry of a character or something like that. But I think it's not just simply composing some fiction text. I don't know what they want me to show the understanding of, and how to show it in my text? I will be much appreciate for the answer, Thank you.

Hey guys, was just wondering if you had any thoughts, ideas, or opinions on my extended essay topic. I was planning on doing a comparative analysis on two books, 'Boyhood' by J. Coetzee and 'Jasper Jones' by Craig Silvey. Although the second title is not very well known, perhaps some of you may know of, or have read it, and possibly feel that it is comparable to the former. Cheers

I was planning to do my written task on Doll's house by Henrik Ibsen from part 3 of our course, and I was hoping I would work on a diary entry by Nora. So I just wanted to clarify if it is okay to change the setting or time period of the play? such as set it in a modern time or change its cultural context. Any help appreciated

Hi! As SL students probably know, we get guiding questions with each text for analysis. I was wonderig if it was required that we respond to them? The front of the paper says that it isn't required that we respond to them, so in my mock exam I wrote a commentary, like you would in HL. But soon after my teacher said we had to respond to the questions, so I was a little confused. Thank you!

So my IOP is in a week, and I thought I had it all figured out, but after talking to my teacher today I'm freaking out. I was going to do the creative approach and write a letter from Aureliano Segundo to Petra Cotes, which he would write on his deathbed and which would be mostly apologetic, explaining his motifs to marry Fernanda and why he kept running back and forth between the two women. Seemed alright to me, however now I am wondering if it wouldn't be too much form, not enough content. I'm scared as hell, because my teacher is VERY strict when it comes to grading, and I know I need to have a top-notch analysis and a fresh approach to the subject in order to have a…

Hello! So I have a rather silly question, but I'm a bit confused on what I can write my WT2 on. Would I be allowed to write it on a book/literary work that we haven't taken, but is in the Prescribed Authors list like 'The Stranger' or 'The Importance of Being Earnest'? Because I'm quite interested in doing some of my WT's on them, but I've heard from some of the seniors that it's forbidden. Thanks!

I was looking over the November 2014 exam for english language and literature and I noticed that text d had four letter to the editors from four different people. So i'm confused about how I would discuss tone when all four tones are different, and how I would include them in my introductory sentence. Would I just say "letters to the editor by x, y, z"?

I recently got a written task idea on the viral video "Slap Her", and my teacher is a polyglot so we enjoyed watching the video together and after hearing my ideas for it he told me to go ahead and write up an outline. I was talking to my friend about this and she mentioned that you can only do your written tasks on english-based texts. Now I'm confused and I'm wondering if my teacher overlooked the verbal language aspect (there were English subtitles) and whether it's actually possible for me to do my critical response on that video. Here's the link: “Slap her": children's reactions - YouTube. To be clearer I indeed do English L&L HL

Hey IBSurvival! So we meet again, and now I have my mocks in just over a month. I have started revising Math, Chemistry, Physics, and Economics. However, I'm a little confused as to where to start studying for English SL Lang and Lit. Our mock will be a paper 1 style exam (Possibly paper 2 as well, but hopefully not.. ). I have a list of literary devices and a resource on how to structure the Essay (paragraph by paragraph), but I feel like I do not have that good of a command over language, especially when I'm under stress of timed conditions. The thesaurus is my best friend, and I won't be able to use it . I'm more of a 'math person' so my sentence structure and wor…

Hello all, I am an English A LL: SL student, I know that the IB specifies 2 books for Part 3 and 2 books for the Part 4. Overall we've studied a total of 6 books in the SL course, 2 more than the specified number. Now my question is in reference to Part 3 section, which will be used in paper 2 exam. The books I have studied that the teacher has already submitted to IB under part 3 are as following: 1984, George Orwell (PLA) Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen (PLA) Candide, Voltaire (PLT) My teacher says that you can put in more than 2 books in the part 3 to use in the exam and 2 books is only the minimum, is this true? If it is, IB specifies that 1 book is from PLT a…

Hi, I was thinking if the written task can be in the format of a play. I am planning on doing an alternative Macbeth, which takes place in modern day with the twist that it is not a kingdom but the stock market of Wall Street. I initially wanted to do a short story of Macbeth's accession to power (becoming major shareholder), but my planning was already about 800 words. Which is why I was thinking if I could do a play or a script for this. Do let me know if this is done and if it is marked well. I guess I could get the points for the format and explain it in the rationale. I want to see your thoughts on this. Thanks, Atham

Is there anyone out there who has read the novel entitled Parihaka Woman, by Witi Ihimaera. It's a story about Maori people. I'm starting to read the book but our exams are nearby, we have only started reading it recently in class. Plus, there seems to be a very limited numbr of resources about it. So I hope someone can help share ideas about the novel, such as its themes, symbols, cultural importance, and all that. Any ideas or help will be truly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, for my FOA I'm doing a speech on Language and Translation, mainly problems arising from mistranslations. I have chosen several texts that, while aren't mistranslations of an original text, outline situations where a mistranslation occurred and led to disasters (such as a $71 million lawsuit for malpractice). However, I am not sure if this is okay to be used. What is your opinion on this issue? Thanks in advance.

Hi guys; So I take English HL Lang & Lit and I have this big problem where I have papers under the recommended word count - mostly because I find that I'm really dense. Dense being that I know that the authors of the texts and works of literature make use of techniques, but I cannot adequately explain said techniques. This problem is really irritating and I have no idea what to do about it. Any clues? Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone, I really need help on my wit essay.. I decided to write it on the play Ghosts by the norweigan author Henrik Ibsen, and my thesis is: the ghosts of public opinion and duty that haunt mrs alving heavily influence her actions. Sooo, after writing my essay, my teacher told me that my paper as a whole is too vague, abstract and broad in it's scope and that I need to find a tangible symbol, motif, or exchange between characters that I can use as a base for my analysis. After hearing all this i decided to go back and fix my paper up. But I dont know if it was my teachers words that intimidated me to edit my essay or something else because I have absolutely NO idea…

Hi guys! I'm really confused about WT2. I want to use the question How and why is a social group represented in a particular way, but how do I go about it? Do I change the topic to be something like, How and why are immigrants represented in a positive way in John Agard's Listen Mr Oxford Don, or do I state the particular social group and way in the introduction? Thank you so much! (Also, the topic's not final yet, I'm not going to use 'positive', I just can't come up with anything else right now.)

Hi guys, first post here =D Im beginning my IB2 year in about 3 weeks and have managed to procrastinate most of the assignments i was presented with in my German Self-taught class. I have a question about what is expected of me for the 1200-1500 word essay that i have to write for the course. Hey guys! I have a simple but extremely important question about my wt. I'm writing an interview with an imaginary South African (Cape Coloured) musician who has been influenced by Nelson Mandela, Apartheid etc. Throughout this interview I'm showing his Afrikaans routes through the use of names, locations and phrases. A typical interview falls into the category of Language and Mass Communication, although, my wt shows a lot of context and could be Language in Cultural Context. Which part of the course should I say my wt is based on? Thanks a lot!
