I've just read a similar topic in the languages B forum, and as I couldn't find a similar topic here I figured I'd start it myself. The school I'm going to apply to offers English literature HL, English language and literature SL and HL, German language and literature SL and HL, Hungarian literature SL and HL, and Russian literature SL.

Hi, My written task focuses on "Language and gender," and our teacher said we can use any source as long as it relates to the focus (language and gender). I decided to do this on the movie (source) Fury and how it represents gender in the male gender- it shows how men in the male gender are influenced to be one way, and are not accepted if they are another way; so essentially a character in the movie is looked down upon by his teammates (other males) as he is not "manly" enough for them; this character throughout the film, through constant pressure by his teammates (to develop the manly characteristics), develops into the "man" his teammates consider to be a "man." So I…

Hey guys, For those who have Russian or any other language self-taught, could you please help me with written assignment? I am really stuck with stage 2 - reflective statement. What did you write for it? The question is following and I have no idea what IB wants for it: How was your understanding of cultural and contextual considerations of the work developed through your journal writing? Thanks a lot!

Hello, I am currently in IB 1, first post. I am having problems finding out what to talk about for my IOP. I chose "The sense of being Lost". as a topic and I am using poems by Robert Frost ("Desert Places" and "Two Look at Two") and Seamus Heaney ("The second Coming") as well as "Waiting for the Barbarians". I was thinking about talking about how others sometimes show that they are confused in their writting style. And maybe that sometime loosing everything in order to restart is the answer. I have really no idea what I am doing and would love some help. This is what I have so far and a couple of notes on the side: https://prezi.com/b70tplb6i-dd/untitled-prezi/ …

Hi, Since our mocks are coming up, I'd like to know what exactly we have to do on paper 1. I know we get 2 pairs of texts and we are supposed to write a comparative analysis in 2 hours. My question is: how many analysis do we have to write, 1 or 2? And if 1, then why are we given 2 pairs of texts? Sorry for sounding like an idiot. My teacher is in his first year of teaching IB and he's quite clueless. Edit: removed "textual" to change the word to "analysis" just to avoid confusion. (Sorry, twas my bad. )

Hello! I've been thinking of doing my first FOA, based on part 1 of the course, on language and translation, and how meaning is gained or lost through translation. However, I'm not sure what the best way to carry this out is. Any tips?

Hello all, We're tasked to do a written task 1 on part two of the course (media and mass communication) and most of my friends has opted to write an article piece about a current issue from a renowned columnist. (Friedman, Nick Cohen, etc) I'm not really keen on doing this and was wondering if I could write a blog piece.. about a new item (iphone 6, or anything electronic) and compare the views of different critics? Any suggestions are welcome Cheers! Sam

I am planning to do my FOA, which is this Wednesday.. on Gender and Language in the Big Bang Theory. I am still not really sure how I should connect Language with this thing. Although I did think of some things such as the register and style of the characters that can be related to their gender. Now I am a bit confused, does language affect gender or does gender affect language or some other relationship between them? Another thing is, how am I supposed to put it into cultural context?

Hi, all! So, I'm currently finishing up my final draft for English Literature and Language Written Task 1, it's a speech supporting Edward Snowden's whistle-blowing. My current word count (total, including rationale of ~300 words) is ~1,500 words. The question is: Is that over the word count? If so, what is the word count? There isn't a word count mentioned in the grading criteria I've been given by my teacher, so I'm not sure if I should go ahead with it as-is or whether I should reduce the word count. Any help on the matter will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

For WT 1, are making up facts about a famous personality acceptable for the sake of exploration? What about including one's own interpretation of a text, or other people interpretation of the text? ( as in its purpose, etc.)

Hi, I have to write my written task 2 based on any of these questions, can someone please give me an example of what I can do for any of the questions, thanks How could the text be read and interpreted differently by two different readers? If the text had been written in a different time or place or language or for a different audience, how and why might it differ? How and why is a social group represented in a particular way? Which social groups are marginalized, excluded or silenced within the text? How does the text conform to, or deviate from, the conventions of a particular genre, and for what purpose?

Hey, so i was just wondering. For SL, I know that only 1 written task needs to be submitted. My question is that can we give the best one? Or is the IB going to pick or something like that? And is it possible that they would ask for all 3, or even 2, for moderation purposes? Just trying to clear out some confusion. Thanks!

Hello to everyone, I have been assigned to write a Written Task 2, and the text that will be used is "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien. The question that I will be answering is: "How and why is a social group represented in a particular way?" The social group that I want to discuss is "the soldiers". My questions are: Should i concentrate on one specific chapter and discuss how the soldiers are presented? Also can anyone please give me suggestions on what things i could possibly discuss in this Written task and why are the soldiers presented in a particular way. Thanks for helping

Hi! I'm doing my first written task right now, and I'm basically looking for some advice about whether or not my idea would be appropriate. I was hoping to do 2 editorials (as editorials tend to be roughly 400 words), with both of them discussing the current protests occurring in Hong Kong, but from differing angles (For example, one from the view of a pro-democracy HK-based magazine, and a more conservative pro-Beijing, also HK- based, magazine) Would this be suitable? Thank you!

1) Do you agree with the Note Takers statement with the use of English. Will her kerbstone English keep her in the "gutter". Are there other factors that determine her position in society. 2) What do you think of the Note Taker's proposition? Is it possible to transform a cockery girl in to a Duchess by teaching her to speak differently? Does such a plan ignore her the same identity or is it a generous offer?

Hi guys, Last time I did an FOA, I did it on part 2, and the format of the FOA was very different from what I am trying to do now. It had bullet points on each slide, and I made sure I used a lot of vocabulary I learned in class. I got a good score on it. However, I was skimming through YouTube and found an unique FOA. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzRsfO6eeIw&index=10&list=UUikzrEhZS-9ucVleDrwGpnQ It is comprised of only photos, and it is not very academic. IBSurvival users, what grade (out of 7) would you give this FOA? Do you think its a good idea to do a summative FOA in this format (without using the recording, I will actually present)?

Hey everyone. So I've thought of a possible idea for my Written task 1 and I would appreciate any input or criticism. I thought about writing an autobiography, or, rather, an excerpt from an autobiography, of a rap star, detailing the evolution of rap culture. Any input at all, even if it's extremely critical, would be fantastic. Cheers!

Hey, so I have an FOA in 2 days, and I was was wondering whether we could use a paper with some written material on it for the FOA? I have a lot of stuff that i need to say exactly like it is, and it's kind of difficult to remember everything as it is. There was an earlier post, i think, that said that using cue cards will get you marked down harshly, so I'm a bit confused. If someone could clarify this within the next 2 days, I'd be greatly appreciative. Cheers.

Hello, I am a student who will be starting the IB this year. I chose english SL as my subject but I am wondering if it would be better to have it as a HL. The problem is English is not my native language (although I have picked it up from a young age and is in English A) and always have trouble writing academic English. I generally get 5s on my report card and recently got a 6. Do you think it would be better for me to keep SL rather than HL if I am aiming at least a 6 in the IB for the English Course? Thanks.

For my English HL class I need to do an FOA on part 1 which is "Language in Cultural Context," I was wondering if I could analyze multiple texts from the same culture, and see how the culture influences them or if it would be better to take texts from multiple different english speaking cultures and see how different cultures perhaps affect the same topic. Also, any and all advice would be appreciated on anything about FOAs Thank you!

Hello there! I'll start the IB Course in September and originally I wanted to do English B. The Student Adviser at my future school told me now, that I should take English L&L, because I want to study in the UK, but I'm from Germany. Because of this I'll have to do a test at the university to be admitted and they experienced that the students who took English B do not pass this exam. But they also told me that I should read some english literature to prepare for this course. It would be very nice, if you recommended me some books. Thank you!

Hi guys! I have a question about Criterion A for Paper 2. Criterion A - Knowledge and understanding - 5 marks The essay demonstrates an understanding of the works and knowledge of the contexts in which they were written. The student shows how context affects interpretations of the texts. I'm quite confused about what they mean by 'contexts in which they were written', especially on how to incorporate that into the essay. Does anyone have any tips/examples? Also, for the Paper 2 in general, does anyone have any tips on planning & crucial things to include? Thanks!

For some reason this is hard for me to wrap my head around and it's driving me crazy. Lets say you have a book and you have a movie based off of that book and there's a motif reoccurring. How could the motif be "handled differently" when comparing the book and the movie? I just need some examples. Thanks!

My class studied novels for our paper 2. I know that the layout of paper 2s has changed.... before you could pick from 2 questions under the "Novel and short story" category, OR you could also pick from 4 questions under the "General Questions on Literature" category, giving you a choice to answer 1 of 6 questions. Then, someone told me we still got to pick between 6 questions this year, except there are no longer any categories and everyone just chooses 1. NOW my friend is telling me that the teacher told her all the exams have changed, and this year you only get to pick between 3, per category, no more General Questions on Literature category.. so that means I only have…
